I had a successful career in technology for 20 years and something was missing. I had run 5 marathons since turning 40, including the Boston Marathon and experienced great personal satisfaction. I wanted to help women to expand their view of their capabilities and take action on their fitness and health.

In 2004 I founded Step Up For Life, a beginner's half marathon training program for women primarily those who had never run before. Since then, I've led hundreds of women across the finish line of local half marathons and helped many more to lose weight. For many it was an experience of a lifetime.

My greatest accomplishment to-date has been the difference that I've made for people and through them, their families and communities. Being in good health is a choice I make every day. At the age of 46 I am in the best shape of my life. I constantly work on taking care of myself. When I feel good, my energy is magnetic. I draw people to me and inspire them to be all they can be .I am on a journey to connect my passion for health with my gift for empowering others. I inspire people by example. I'm known as a role model in my community and someone who inspires others to be healthy and fit. I want to expand my reach to millions and show them that if I can do it, so can they.

Born in Germany Tolga began to feel his musical interests by the age of 17. Influenced by different artists like Dennis Brown & Garnet Silk he soon developped his own style. By the time he hooked up with other artists who are successfully involved in the Dancehall business like germany´s wellknown artist Gentleman or one of the topclass singers and producer´s named Richie Stephens. Gentleman launched a heavily rotated Track (Heat of the night) in 1999 where Tolga was involved.

Their common video was shot in Jamaica along with Richie Stephens; Title went on heavy rotation in the local jamaican TV-music stations. Tolga´s career was strongly influenced by Gentleman´s first album single “Heat of the night” and their teamwork helped open up business connections. While he was joining several Shows with Soundsystems like Pow Pow (Cologne), Soundquake (Detmold) and many others, he withdraw the attention of different Label´s and Record Company´s.

While he starterd to work on his debut album (1998) , he toured a lot on small and bigger shows with different soundsystems. He decided to launch his debut album (Now that I am here) in October 2000 with Warner Music Germany. For this debut, he recorded and worked with artists like Lady Saw, Lexxus, General Degree, Gentleman and many more. the songs were produced by big names like Richard Browne and other producers out of Europe (Roger & Shorty, Pionear). At the same time, dancehall had a big success in germany, so his debut was also a success and confirmation of his style. Several other 7” releases were released, like “Leave it onto him” on the “Superior” riddim produced by Pow Pow in Febuary, also “Don´t let go” on the “Truth” riddim produced by Kingstone in April.

Until today, Tolga wrote a lot of new songs and is realizing them with the help of friends like Jah Meek, Richie Stephens and many others.

Shaggy and Euro 2008

UEFA EURO 2008™ will be a feast of football on the pitch and a party off it – and Jamaican-American recording artist Shaggy is helping to provide the soundtrack.

'Feel the groove'
The reggae star, famed for such hits as Oh Carolina and Mr Boombastic, attended an event in Berne today marking 100 days until the finals as well as the launch of euro2008.com. Shaggy teamed up with tournament mascots Trix and Flix to record their anthem, Like A Superstar, to help fans get in the party mood for UEFA EURO 2008™ – and he is delighted to be part of the celebration in Austria and Switzerland in June. "I wanted the song to be passionate and vibrant so that people could feel the groove, " Shaggy said. "There is more to come as we have a song called Feel the Rush, a very energetic song, which is to be launched in April or so."

'A big party'
UEFA Commercial Director Philippe Margraff said: "We want UEFA EURO 2008™ to be a big party where fans can enjoy and celebrate the spectacle. Music is a key ingredient to that and we wanted to consider that different types of music applied to different people. We want to have something that people like and something that complements the event as part of that big party, that big celebration."

Mascots Trix and Flix have teamed up with reggae star Shaggy for a new video, Like A Superstar, to help fans get into the party mood for UEFA EURO 2008™.

Mascot action
The video sees Trix and Flix playing football and dancing in the mountains of Austria and Switzerland and in football stadiums, giving their growing legion of fans a chance to see the striking twosome in action. The video has been targeted at children and young people, but the organisers of UEFA EURO 2008™ hope Trix and Flix's signature tune will be a hit with adults too.

Rebuilding the vibe in Israel

ROOTS-REGGAE group Israel Vibration are scheduled to perform in Tel Aviv, Israel, on April 22, at the Barbie Club. It is part of Israeli promoter Guil Bronstein's move to bring Jamaican music back to the Middle East country on a larger scale.

"Reggae culture is everywhere. Go into the reggae.co.il site (the Walla reggae portal in Israel) and you'll see that every week there are shows at kibbutzim and clubs," Bronstein is quoted as saying by the Jerusalem Post newspaper.

Bronstein was responsible for Israel Vibration's two previous appearances in Israel in the early 1990s. They will again be backed by the Roots Radics Band, which has collaborated with the group for over 20 years.

Back then, Vibration was a trio. Albert 'Apple' Craig, the other original member, left in the late 1990s.

Great line-up

Currently, the group members are Lascelle 'Wiss' Bulgin and Cecil 'Skelly' Spence, who formed Israel Vibration with Craig while they were polio patients at the Mona Rehabilitation Centre in Mona, St Andrew.

"They are the roots of reggae, and people here love to see reggae legends," Bronstein told the Jerusalem Post.

Ziggy Marley, the Mad Professor, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Prezident Brown and Cutty Ranks are just some of the reggae acts who have performed in Israel in recent years.

There are several Israeli reggae acts, including Silver Don, as well as sound systems and a vibrant club scene that embraces all forms of Jamaican music.

Jamming in the desert

The Reggae In The Desert live show, which was first held in 2002, returns on June 14 with Judy Mowatt, the Wailing Souls, the Mighty Diamonds and Barrington Levy as headliners.

Michael Black and the Jah Guide Band, and DJ Ramma, complete the line-up. The show will be held at the Clark County Amphitheater in Las Vegas.

The Wailers, Third World and Don Carlos performed at last year's show.

Bob Marley's mother dies in Miami at 81

Cedella Booker, the mother of Jamaican music legend Bob Marley, has died, a family spokesman said Wednesday. She was 81. Booker died in her sleep Tuesday night at her home in Miami, apparently from natural causes, spokesman Jerome Hamilton said.

Booker, a Jamaica native, was 18 when she married Norval Marley, a British man 32 years her senior. Their son brought Jamaican reggae music to international prominence, becoming its international image. Bob Marley died in Miami of a brain tumor in 1981 at age 36.

"Mrs. Booker was the matriarch of a movement so powerful that the mystical qualities of the Marley musical legacy remain strong and potent," Jamaica Information Minister Olivia Grange said.

After Norval Marley died in 1955, Booker married an American man and settled in Delaware. She wrote two biographies of her famous son and recorded two albums, "Awake Zion!" and "Smilin' Island of Song."

"She was a star in her own right," Jamaica Prime Minister Bruce Golding said in a statement. "Her life was one of hardship, struggle and eventual fulfillment, and through it all, she exuded hope, strength and confidence."

Everyone in St. Ann's parish knew Booker as "Mama B," said Harry Shivnani, a family friend and general manager of Bob Marley's mausoleum.

"She loved cooking," Shivnani said. "Mama would make you the best pudding ever."

Robert Lalah, a columnist for the Jamaica Gleaner, interviewed Booker in February while she celebrated her son's birthday.

"She was a typical Jamaican grandmother," he said. "She was very warm, very friendly."

Booker is survived by two children and several grandchildren, including Ziggy Marley, who won four Grammys with the Melody Makers, a band that included brother Stephen and sisters Sharon and Cedella.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.

Buju Banton Leaves Penthouse Records

Kingston-based Penthouse Records has announced its amicable separation from artiste Mark Myrie, more popularly known as Buju Banton.

In a statement, CEO of Penthouse, Donovan Germain, noted that: "I have been guiding and managing the career of Buju Banton for the last 18 years and the time has come for this chapter to close."

Germain noted that having dedicated the last 18 years to building Buju Banton's career, taking him from obscurity to the pinnacle of international stardom, it was with a sense of pride that he was relinquishing the management of the artiste, to move on to other activities.

He added, "First and foremost, I am a producer and after spending so many years on the road touring, I now feel the need to get back in the studio and get really involved in the production side of the music," Germain stated.

He emphasised that this was a "mutual decision" which was long in the making. The Penthouse CEO pointed out that Buju Banton would be handling his own affairs under his Gargamel Music outfit.

"Buju is now refurbishing his studio and his entire operations, so he will be able to handle his bookings and all management-related activities."

Germain stated that he wished Buju continued success and declared that the artiste could feel free to call on his expertise whenever necessary.

Penthouse Records has a roster of young artistes including Anthony Cruz, Nikeishia Barnes, Romaine Virgo and Torch.

Jamaica Plans To Put A Ban On Mavado Songs

A refusal to play Mavado's songs is said to be the reason behind the shooting incident for which the artiste has been charged THE STAR understands.

The self proclaimed "Gully God" is facing two counts of shooting with intent and illegal possession of firearm arising from the incident which occurred on July 27 last year.

Police reports are that on the day in question, Mavado and his entourage were allegedly at a bar near the intersection of Whitehall Avenue and Mannings Hill Road, St. Andrew where his songs were being played.

It was also said that a certain individual then ordered that no songs done by Mavado should be played.

Further reports are that an ensuing altercation saw Mavado and his entourage leaving the bar before returning and proceeding to fire shots, injuring two persons.

Brooks was formally arrested and charged after turning himself in to the Kingston and St. Andrew Major Investigation Task Force on Wednesday and subsequently taken into custody at the Kingston Police Station.

Head of the Major Investigations Task Force, Assistant Commissioner Les Green could not be reached for a comment yesterday, however when initially contacted on Wednesday evening he noted that investigations were continuing into the incident.

Mavado is known for songs such as I'm on the rock and Gully Side.

A Powerful Sub-Culture Called Dancehall

Close observation of hard-core dancehall music will reveal that there is a tendency to embrace, endorse and promote some of the most disgusting and decadent lifestyles. Most try to adopt an hypocritical stance of portraying themselves as being defenders of the oppressed, however they encourage and assist in promoting the characteristics and mannerisms that has over the years, and continues to keep our brothers and sisters in psychological bondage. With the exception of a few, most dancehall artistes have contributed to the music being seen and interpreted as a quarrelsome style music, which is steeped in confrontations that often times becomes physical. Inspiration for the writing of a song is usually inspired by ether a domestic ‘kass kass, the idiosyncrasies or idiotic actions of individuals.

These persons on most occasions are driven by the everyday pressures of life, or sheer ignorance. However this does not necessarily mean that the song writer is also daft, but most times understands the mentality of the dancehall culture, to the extent that he or she recognizes the impact musically, of relaying such a story in dancehall parlance or style. The main stage for dancehall confrontations was at “Sting,” billed as the greatest one day dancehall event in the world. “Sting” until recently was the scene for some of the most disgusting clashes and confrontations, between dancehall artistes on one hand, and unruly dancehall supporters who bottled artistes who in their opinion ‘disrespect’ artistes who they support. The promoters of “Sting” were forced to address the issue four years ago, they made it clear that they would not encourage or endorse any form of confrontational clashes between artistes. These clashes over the years has led to both artistes and patrons getting hurt some seriously. Recently there have been a number of incidents that have made media houses take an in-depth look at the coverage, exposure and hype that has been attributed to some hard-core dancehall artistes.

Recent trends show that there are now entire communities who are caught up in supporting a particular artistes or production house over another, thus dividing the youths and their communities. It is now at the stage where an individual’s like or dislike of a particular artiste could set one up for physical abuse. A perfect example is the case of Marveley where Top Marveley is alleged to be strongly aligned to Beenie Man and Vibz Kartel Mafia House Productions, While Bounty Killer and Movado’s “Alliance” is supported by Bottom Marveley which has sparked a number of clashes between youths in the community. To date one man has been shot dead as a result of the ridiculous on-going feud. The Police has confirmed that they are investigating incidents and complaints from residents in regards to frequent exchanges of gunfire in the community. Pressed for more information the Police disclosed that to date no evidence has been found to implicate any dancehall artistes or production house, alleged to be affiliated with the on-going feud in Marveley. In another incident on the UWI Campus a female Radio DJ had missiles thrown at her while she was playing at a show at the “Student’s Union in early January. Reasons given for the missile throwing was that the DJ was playing too many of Beenie man’s music.

The latest incident was on Sunday February 25th in Helshire where two popular DJ;s Razz and Biggy were roughed up by three men who claimed they are so-called supporters of dancehall artiste Vybz Kartell. The men accused Razz and Biggy of playing too many Mavado selections. When contacted Vybz Kartel said he was disappointed in the actions of his supporters and fans, and there would be no tolerance for such behavior. Its indeed obvious that the dancehall fraternity is rapidly approaching a new and depressing low. There can only be one solution to this problem ,disc jockeys must play good music, not the hype that has literally forced good reggae music to be stuck on radio stations library shelves. Radio Jocks and DJ’s must also realize that they play a crucial role in educating their listeners and patrons, through the music they play. To do this they must free themselves from the shackles of obligation, no well thinking radio personality or DJ should allow themselves to be used, bribed or controlled for a fistful of dollars. Bearing in mind the chaos, lack of vision and the confrontational stance dancehall has taken, our competent ‘disc jockeys’ must take on the roles of our social scientists, who apparently are too scared to ether address the issue, or show their faces at needed forums.

As a result radio stations must ensure that their broadcasters are capable, and competent of addressing, and diffusing the escalating tensions brought about by misdirected artistes, record producers and flat-footed hustlers who pose as disc jockeys and DJ’s. Its now in the hands of our disc jockeys and the dancehall artistes themselves, to deliver world class music that will not only entertain, but uplift our youths and our nation in the process.
