I got on the train to New York City and thought Phish is going to play "Back on the Train" tonight. They did. I had yet another amazing Phish experience on Thursday. I began my day by street performing some Phish songs in Bryant Park and then I went off to the Phish.Net meetup. People were excited and had high hopes of another great "29th" set. I walked into the venue and the vibe was great in there. You could feel all of the excitement. I realized when I sat down that by seats weren't that great, so I sneaked into a private glassed in section. I sat down and when I realized that the opener was "The Sloth" I said man this will be an epic show. When I heard the first notes of "YEM" I was very surprised. I was certain they were saving it for New Years Eve as usual. Is this as reward I wondered? Usually a second song "YEM" may mean a song like "TTE" is close by, but no I was wrong.

We ended up getting a great set one. "Moma Dance" > "Funky Bitch" was a smooth decision. There was non-stop dancing in set one. The hits kept going and going until the set closed with "Antelope". "Halley's" I felt was strong but still could've used more meat. The first set was very impressive, but if the show started with "Back on the Train" it would have been a boring setlist. Set two started with "Crosseyed" and I felt a "Mikes > Simple > Weekapaug" coming. "Crosseyed" > "Simple" might have been where the best jams of the night were. "Simple" featured a slow ambient section at the end which cooled the crowd down after NON-STOP dancing.

"Simple" slowed down and Trey started playing the "Lifeboy" riff. I think the crowd liked it. Many people sat down and recharged before a heavy "Mikes Groove" hit them. It featured "Mikes > CDT > Hydrogen -> Weekapaug". This in my opinion was the strongest part of the night. The set closed with "Show of Life" and finally a "Character Zero". They gave us a tight, but predictable "Loving Cup" encore. I was very impressed and so far I think this is the best night of the run. What's next tonight?

Before I go to the train station and get on the train from New Haven to NYC I wanted to share my thoughts on Phish's first show of a night run. I unfortunately didn't make it to this show, but I listened to it and checked out the setlist. The show had a good flow to it. The big bustout of the night was "Glide", a song that fans had hoped to hear all year that hadn't been played since December 4, 2009. The show featured the first ever "Free" opener with the lyrics "I feel the feeling I forgot". "Cities" was a shout out to New York City and "I'm glad glad glad that you arrived" was a perfect welcome for fans. The first set had the theme less songs, more jams. I loved the patient "Gin" and a pretty smooth "Stash". Phish played their originals well and played a Talking Heads cover and a Lynyrd Skynyrd cover as well.

These would not be the night's only covers. "Rock and Roll" showed up mid-set two. Set two featured many favorite jam vehicles like "Tweezer" and "Harry Hood". "Tweezer" featured yet another "Streets of Cairo" tease. "Tweezer" featured some nice ambient jamming and "Hood" was a bit more patient than the usual 3.0 "Hood". Tonight, I hope for a "Reba", "Mike's Groove", and "Ghost". I'm off to YEMSG, tomorrow's review will be posted shortly after the show.
