A special last minute show was added to the calendar at Santa Barbara's premiere live music restaurant and bar venue, SOhO. Jon Anderson played an acoustic set of new and old material, at the intimate spot last Sunday night. As the quintessential lead singer of the classic rock band Yes, Anderson sang on every album in the band's catalog, save one. Yes' chameleon lineup has boasted some of the biggest names in rock music throughout its long history, and in many ways epitomized the genre of true Classical Rock music. Over four decades members have included guitarists, Peter Banks, Steve Howe, Trevor Rabin, and Billy Sherwood, keyboard players Tony Kaye, Rick Wakeman, Patrick Moraz, Geoff Downes, and Igor Khoroshev, and drummers Bill Bruford and Alan White. The two unifying forces in the band over the decades have been bassist Chris Squire and the unique high-pitched vocal talents of Anderson.

Before Thom Yorke of Radiohead pierced the airwaves with his angelic voice, it was the front man of Yes that was most associated with the rock voice of an angel. Although many critics have falsely labeled him a traditional falsetto singer, Anderson himself has described his singing range as an alto tenor, with the ability to hit only certain high notes. Regardless of the category, his voice is instantly recognizable when he begins to sing.

As he took to the stage in the California town that he has called home for nearly a decade, his voice sounded a little hoarse and strained. But with each subsequent song, his voice and range grew stronger. It is sometimes hard to imagine how this tiny Englishman from Liverpool, whose bandmates used to affectionately refer to as Napoleon, can release such a huge voice from his frail, little frame. Anderson was warmly greeted in the tightly packed venue. An audience of mostly older adoring fans sang and clapped along to every recognizable song. As Anderson frequently stopped to celebrate the moment, fans would shout out their support and appreciation with ongoing love fest banter.

Jon Anderson :: 11.15 :: Santa Barbara, CA

Jon Anderson music has always been about the triumph and healing of the human spirit. In the early days of Yes his lyrics were fanciful, naively optimistic yearnings for freedom, fairness, and love. His solo material, however, has taken on a more personal, realistic view of the healing power of music and love.

His appearance in Santa Barbara, and debut of some intimate new material, took on an even greater sense of urgency and renewal since a near death experience he had last year. The vulnerable and venerable Yes frontman was actually preparing for his first tour with the band since 2004 just before falling ill. The band went on to tour without him, enlisting replacement singer Benoit David from Yes tribute act Close to the Edge.

In his solo show, dubbed "Have Guitar Will Travel," Anderson played 23 songs, covering nearly the entire Yes oeuvre, as well as new solo material and songs that he had collaborated on with Greek composer/keyboardist Vangelis of Chariots of Fire fame.

The concert began and ended with Yes numbers that had the crowd singing and clapping like a group of teenagers around the fire at summer camp. The first two songs he sang, "Yours Is No Disgrace" from 1971's The Yes Album and "Long Distance Runaround" from 1972's Fragile, were Yes classics. Hearing the frail singer croon, sans the massive musical framework of thunderous sounds that would envelope him in a typical Yes concert, was disconcerting at first. But quickly it became apparent that Anderson's voice was up to the challenge and allowed the audience to decipher every word, many of which would normally be drowned out in a cacophony of rock music.

Anderson then went further back in time to 1970's Time And A Word, playing "Sweet Dreams" and a totally rearranged, reggae-influenced version of the title track. The latter started with Anderson jokingly bantering with the audience, while struggling to find the right octave, but then quickly hitting the right stride. He sang the song with a Sting-like vibe and lyrical quotes from The Beatles' "She Loves You" and "All You Need is Love" and Hal David and Bruce Bacharach's "What The World Needs Now Is Love." The word is "love," indeed, all thrown in for good measure. The crowd was ecstatic and began singing and dancing in the aisles.

Jon Anderson :: 11.15 :: Santa Barbara, CA

On a more personal note, Anderson chatted about his illness in his introduction to new song "Under Heaven's Door." In the first of many anecdotes, he explained how he had almost died from respiratory failure last year, and thanked the local paramedics for bringing him back from the brink of death not once but twice. This was one of a few songs for which Anderson used a strum stick, a rich-sounding three-stringed instrument based on an Appalachian dulcimer, as accompaniment.

This prolific songwriter followed up with "I'll Find My Way Home," a track co-written with Vangelis, which Anderson explained was (successfully) composed in response to the record company's demand for a hit single.

Three more Yes songs followed, including a show highlight for many in attendance, when Anderson sang, "All we are saying/ Is give peace a chance," while the audience sang the "diddit didda's" from "I've Seen All Good People." The others were an abbreviated "Nous Sommes Du Soleil" from 1974's epic Tales from Topographic Oceans and "Starship Trooper," which gave Anderson some trouble with the bridge at the beginning of the song, but he eventually nailed it down to roaring approval. It seemed the harder this masterful musician struggled to get things just right, the more excited the mood in the crowd became.

After the uplifting new song "Unbroken Spirit Of Mine," Anderson tackled
Yes' 1983 comeback hit "Owner of a Lonely Heart," which replaced precise electronic sounds with a driving acoustic guitar rhythm. This was followed by a piano medley that touched on different eras from Anderson's long career. He quickly returned to guitar for "And You And I" from 1972's Close to the Edge.

Three more new songs followed, including the spiritually inspired "Music is God" and the autobiographical "Tony and Me" based on Anderson's adventures in his pre-Yes band with his brother Tony in 1963. The latter included musical quotes from The Beatles' "She Loves You," The Everly Brothers' "Wake Up Little Susie," and The Beach Boys' "Help Me Rhonda." In the middle Anderson told yet another tale of how a young rotund 16-year-old with a bottle of whiskey joined them onstage for a rousing version of "Hit The Road Jack" in a Sheffield pub. The unlikely singer turned out to be a young <href="http://www.jambase.com/Artists/Artist.aspx?artistID=13249">Joe Cocker.

Later he recounted a story of the band's ride home on a deserted road through the Moors. They came across a box on the road, which they pilfered and were disappointed to find contained five hundred pairs of extra-large underpants. The main set ended with the Vangelis-co-write "State of Independence."

Anderson returned for an encore that began with a bluesy version of "Roundabout" and ended with an inspiring version of "Soon" from Yes' 1974 prog masterpiece Relayer. The adoring crowd gave him a five-minute standing ovation at the end of his set. Jon Anderson left the stage with a big smile and a promise that he would be back soon.

Expect performances by The Dirty Dozen Brass Band horns of Kevin Harris and Efrem Townes, Charlie Starr from up and coming southern rock super group Blackberry Smoke, John Liebman of The Electromatics, David Fisch of Fish Mouth Fools fame, and Nelson Nolen.

Thanksgiving, 1976: The Band, together with Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, and others, gathered together in Winterland Ballroom to celebrate The Band's final concert. Martin Scorsese filmed the event, and that footage became The Last Waltz, one of the greatest musical documentaries of all time.

Progressively playing the music of The Band and Bob Dylan, The Last Waltz Ensemble executes both traditional and original arrangements in an improvisational jam band format. Their playlist includes renowned favorites such as "Like a Rolling Stone," "Don't Do It," and "The Shape I'm In," as well as tracks from other areas of the featured artists' careers. True to the spirit of The Band, this ensemble presents some of the most polished and timeless music in rock history, reinforcing their sound through vintage equipment, special guest performances, and ever-changing set lists.

Some past guests of The Last Waltz Ensemble have included Sean Costello, Brock Butler, Col.

Not many bands can claim to have altered the trajectory of rock 'n' roll with only their third single, but The Kinks managed to inject something primal into the mix with 1964's "You Really Got Me," and fourth single, "All Day and All of the Night" only cemented their place in rock's primary '60s blueprint pantheon. That they followed these raw marvels with SO much amazing music is particularly impressive. While many of their contemporaries were stumbling towards gentrification in the late '70s, The Kinks were still challenging themselves and their listeners, and ultimately rediscovering what a swell singles band they were in the early '80s. While their latter years have seen only fractious dissent between its members, The Kinks remain one of the most beloved bands by serious music geeks and musicians.

This week the Playlist offers up a baker's dozen of fab interpretations of what siblings Ray and Dave Davies and their collaborators have wrought. We tried to steer into lesser known waters, and suspect many will be skeptical of Leif Garrett's take on "Lola" until they actually hear it. As always, our mission at JamBase is to lay cool music at your feet and leave the rest to you. For this Friday, why not stand up and shake a tail feather to some of these jumpers and enjoy the joys of some great songs played well?

American Tour

ALICE IN CHAINS ANNOUNCE NORTH AMERICAN TOUR, NEW SINGLE "YOUR DECISION" HITS RADIO DECEMBER 7

Alice in Chains

Alice In Chains have announced dates for a North American tour set to kick off at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver on February 2, 2010. Tickets go on sale December 4 and 5. The band is touring in support of its critically acclaimed new album Black Gives Way To Blue (Virgin/EMI), which entered Billboard's Top 200 Albums Chart at No. 5, with first-week sales exceeding 126,000 copies.

The band's electrifying set list will spotlight classic hits and new favorites, including new single "Your Decision," which hits radio December 7. The band recently shot a video for the song with director Stephen Schuster, who they previously worked with for the video "A Looking In View."

Los Angeles-based AIC fans can catch the band performing at the KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas show at the Gibson Amphitheatre on December 12. Tickets will go on sale Saturday, November 21 and proceeds will benefit two local charities, Para Los Ninos and the Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center. On November 24, the band will also perform three songs acoustically for a special Yahoo! Maximum Performance, which can be seen on Yahoo! Music.

In other news, Alice In Chains recently released a Black Gives Way To Blue iPhone app, which features full songs from the album, music videos, news, photos, social networking and much more. The app separates itself from the pack with an impressive level of interactivity; its custom-built functionality allows fans to interact with each of the album's 11 tracks via a touch, drag and hold feature that reveals hidden visual gems. A demo of the app (which was designed and developed by Mobile Roadie, Streetwise Concepts & Culture and EMI Music) can be viewed here.

The band (guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell, guitarist/vocalist William DuVall, drummer Sean Kinney, and bassist Mike Inez) is currently touring Europe and recently performed on the U.K. television show Later ... With Jools Holland. The international dates followed a sold-out U.S. buzz tour and performances on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien and back-to-back nights on Jimmy Kimmel Live. All three shows saw AIC perform chart-topping lead single "Check My Brain," which hit No. 1 on the Modern, Active and Rock formats, and was hailed by Spin magazine as "one of the catchiest songs of Alice In Chains' history."

Coincidentally, this show falls on the eleventh anniversary of when Seth sat in with Phish. The band, now expanded to a four piece, will take the stage after Phish's show, with doors opening at 10 p.m. Seth will also perform a solo acoustic, pre-show set at the same venue. On Tour With Ray LaMontagne, New Dates With A.A. Bondy Announced

Lissie

Lissie's EP Why You Runnin' arrived in stores via Fat Possum Records last week. With her powerful, achingly evocative voice and mix of haunting and spirited, always soulful songs, the EP has been climbing the iTunes charts (a recent #1 rank for singer/songwriter albums) as early praise has begun to roll in. In advance of her headlining show at the Mercury Lounge in New York City this past Monday, Time Out New York offered: "...Lissie takes on Americana with a cool, breezy vibe and a strong voice... get to the Merc tonight to see what all the fuss is about." Reviewing the show, Blender.com remarked, "her throat's power seemed to almost knock the walls down... Lissie was dynamic with her entire body, putting tremendous energy out, and it showed. An excellent introduction to New York."

Radio is also already responding to Why You Runnin', with Lissie recently taping performances for WXPN's World Cafe Live (Philadelphia, PA) - which will air January 19, 2010 - as well as WFUV (New York, NY; air date TBA). She is also confirmed for an in-studio performance at influential station KCMP's The Current (Minneapolis, MN), in addition to an upcoming KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic performance on November 24.

Recently, AOL Music's Spinner blog featured Lissie's stirring new single, "Everywhere I Go," as their Free MP3 of the Day. Spinner will also be streaming Why You Runnin' in its entirety throughout the week here. Last month, My Old Kentucky Blog premiered the EP's first single "Little Lovin'", a track which moved TheFader.com to write, "...her spirit is all purple mountains majesty, pure and regal, a true Americana singer, conduit of the land...the richness of her voice never wavers."

Additionally, Lissie - who is currently opening for Ray LaMontagne on select dates - has now announced two new tour dates in support of label mate A.A. Bondy later this month in Omaha, NE and Columbia, MO. She is also set to headline her own KCRW-presented show at the Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles, CA on November 24.

Lissie recorded the majority of the Why You Runnin' EP with friend Bill Reynolds (Band Of Horses) in her Ojai, CA farmhouse and at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC. Originally from the river-bordering town of Rock Island, IL, the wistful "Oh Mississippi" was recorded with Ed Harcourt last fall while she was far from home in London.

Hovering on the verge of their 20th anniversary, The Mother Hips have just released their seventh studio effort, Pacific Dust (out October 26 on Camera Records), and, to the surprise of no one who's spent a little time with their work, it's another end-to-end pop-rock jewel. The pleasurable consistency and solidity of the Hips suggests what might have occurred if the classic lineups of Badfinger or Big Star hadn't lost the script, a music of nigh indestructible musicianship, songwriting, and unforced, organic production. Pacific Dust goes down so smoothly that it's easy to miss what a quality thing they've created. Theirs is not a way prone to flash or spotlights, but instead a craftsmanship that's rare and enduring.

A compelling, easy to like bunch from the start, The Mother Hips, as a unit, have fully gelled in recent years, where the music on Pacific Dust and 2007's predecessor Kiss The Crystal Flake reflects the layers of weird understanding they share as people. "Sure, but definitely in a very weird way," laughs singer-guitarist-composer Greg Loiacono knowingly. Together with Tim Bluhm (vocals, guitar, songwriting), John Hofer (drums), and Paul Hoaglin (bass, vocals), Loiacono has built up one of rock's sturdiest catalogs and one of the most sterling live reputations in the industry. The Mother Hips are a band synonymous with quality, something brought sharply into focus by their new release.

"We went into the studio over a year ago, and there were ideas and a few songs. We put one mic up and just played. In fact, a lot of the songs that ended up on Pacific Dust were tried out and jammed on that first night," says Loiacono. "What we did in these sessions is go over a piece three or four times and then press record so we had one take as a reference to take home so everyone could remember their parts and what they were doing. We typically don't do that, however. Tim or I will often come in and say, 'Here's a song. Here's how it goes,' and then the other guys help fill it in. If there's a bass part the hands you want to leave that in belong to Paul Hoaglin. But the song 'Pacific Dust' is a really good example of the whole band composing a piece."

"'Pacific Dust' was actually created when we were out in Vail, Colorado two summers ago playing this weird, crappy little place. We were supposed to play this 200-year-old lodge but it burnt down a few weeks before. So, we ended up in the complete opposite - this underground sports bar with Schnapps girls. We got there for sound check early and were able to jam out. Tim had the little guitar figure for 'Pacific Dust,' then Hofer put in that totally unexpected drumbeat, and then we all started messing around," explains Loiacono. "We forgot about it until we were in the studio this time and then Tim started doing that riff and we all tried to remember what we were doing in Vail. Originally it was an instrumental, but because Camera Records was gung-ho for it to have words Tim took a stab at it. It has such a cool feel, sort of spooky."

The looser jam approach produced compelling results, like the smoky, dark edged swirl of the title tune.

"I loved it! It was delightful, and we hadn't done that in many, many years, but not on purpose. We just hadn't gotten around to it. It's neat to come up with an instrumental song and then develop lyrics and a melody to put on top of it. It's a great way to do it, except when you have to put it together onstage," says Bluhm. "The guitar parts don't go with singing parts very well because they weren't executed at the same time. It's kind of like learning to juggle for the first time. Your hands are doing one thing and your inner voice is doing another. It took a few days to figure out, but it's sort of funny to not be able to play your own songs."

The California Thing

"That vein has been mined pretty heavily - by us and me in particular - and it's still there, [with imagery] like being lost in a fog bank and the word 'Pacific,' of course," says Bluhm, who seems at peace with the idea that the Hips will always be viewed as the quintessential California rock band. "The only thing that could get us out of it is if we had more widespread recognition, if the thing that got us beyond where we are was a song that didn't really have any of that [California] flavor to it, like 'Third Floor Story.' If a song like that overshadowed everything else we did on a national level, then we might lose the tag. But if it was a song like 'One Way Out' it would reinforce it. Really, I don't care."

The Mother Hips

Trying to group The Mother Hips' music under any one umbrella, even one as broad as 'California Soul Rock,' is foolish. They've explored the possibilities of psych-rock that'd cheer Blue Cheer, country of Haggard quality, and pure pop the Gibb Brothers would approve of. And that's not all by a good stretch. The Hips never seem fully satisfied with where they're at, one eye always locked on the horizon, impatient for what's next.

"Maybe that's just knowing that everything can always be better, being humble to the fact that someone's going to write a better song than you'll ever write or be a better band than you'll ever be," says Bluhm in almost complete contrast to the uber-egos inside many rock acts that believe they're golden gods. "I might believe it in moments, but I wouldn't tell it to a writer during an interview!"

One pleasant surprise on Pacific Dust is the inclusion of beloved live staple "Third Floor Story," a tune of ferocious strength that often finds the boys feeling their oats in concert. One hopes they feel at least somewhat golden when they pull this one out.

"That was our boys Joe [Raaen, Hips manager] and Jon [Salter, Camera Records] saying we had to record it. They were like, 'Come on, do it. Just see how it feels!' We were reluctant about doing it, but we're always reluctant when anybody tells to do anything. That's not new, hence, us not taking the good advice of Rick Rubin and Chris Robinson when we first got on American Records. If we'd been a little more open-minded and willing who knows if we might have held onto some friendships a little longer," observes Loiacono. "Tim and I decided to switch things up and take some suggestions this time. And Paul and John were open to it, so we did it. And we really enjoyed it and were happy with [the take], even had Jackie [Greene] come in and play some keys on it [Greene guests on keys throughout Pacific Dust]. And then we give it to the label and they say, 'It's too slow!' I was like, 'Pardon me?' Our immediate response was, 'This is why we don't take suggestions! This is the most grooving, heavy thing ever!'"

"They told us we play it faster live, and we didn't believe them, but we listened to some live recordings and it was true," continues Loiacono. "We were definitely bothered. Tim and I found ourselves saying, 'Well, why don't you come in and record it the way you want?' and other stupid things like that. It's real, and when you're in it you take this stuff seriously. So, we re-recorded it and the 'Third Floor' on the record is a little different. Instead of having the two guitar solos it has one and we played it faster. We were pissed and it was good fuel and it came out well. In the end, we ended up with two slamming versions [the slower take is available with the seven-song bonus download EP for Pacific Dust]. Reluctantly, we were able to take someone's advice and I'm glad we did."

Getting Dusty

The new album was co-produced by the band and Dave Simon-Baker (ALO, Eric Martin), who is Bluhm's partner at Mission Bells Studio in S.F.

"I was very conscious of keeping it balanced so it wasn't just me steering things but Greg, John and Paul, too. I wanted to make sure I wasn't producing it because it didn't seem appropriate. The way the Hips have always made records is not that way," says Bluhm. "That being said it was done in my studio with a lot of my equipment, so it was like the band came over and made dinner in my kitchen. The things Dave and I have learned about that room and that equipment was useful in getting the record to sound the way it does. And having the studio as a resource makes it possible to record almost constantly."

Hoaglin & Bluhm by Quist

"We keep getting better at playing our instruments, and having a good engineer in the studio means we can capture good tones happening in a reasonable amount of time so we can actually capture those valuable live moments," continues Bluhm. "In the studio, it's always a race between getting the best possible tone you can while the clock of patience is running down on the band. The longer it takes the bigger the chance the band will be past the peak for their potential that day. A lot of the time the band is ready hours before the engineer is, and then you get a lackluster performance, even if it's correct. If you have the right formula between tone and band readiness then it's genius. And we do now, and I'm not sure we ever did in the past."

"Pacific Dust" and other sections of the new album suggest the band has found a way to tap into the earlier, free-form jamming, drug-fueled Hips and pour that vibe into more structured containers.

"I think 'Cheer Up Champ' [Pacific Dust's closer] is maybe our longest studio recording yet; I think it even beats 'Turtle Bones' [a bent fan favorite off their 1993 debut, Back To The Grotto] as the longest song on a Mother Hips album. Live, we're not afraid of playing a song for 22-minutes, but we only do it if it's going somewhere. It's actually something we want to do more in the studio, take that 'Pacific Dust' model and expand on it," says Loiacono. "Conversely though, Tim and I have some more rootsy songs coming up, and we were thinking, 'Hey, wouldn't it be cool to do another Later Days style album?' But there's also the thought, 'Wouldn't it be cool to do a whole Pac Dust type session where we just take songs from inside the jams, Queens of the Stone Age style?' Guess what? Let's do both."

Pacific Dust captures a fair amount of the band member's personalities, and this band overflows with personality, both individually and collectively. The result is an album that doesn't scrimp on individual nuance and charm, so the collective feel is stronger than ever, creating a sound that's both dense and fluid - very full rock 'n' roll made by the entire group.

"I do feel that's true, absolutely, especially given that some of these songs were written from improvising, which makes it even more obvious this is a band playing not just a song, but bringing their personalities together," observes Bluhm. "Paul, as a bass player, is just so involved with the melodic components of each song, just building these counter-melodies and complexities. So much is going on down there in his world you could never take it all in with a single listen."

When one thinks of rock & roll one name unlikely to pop up is modernist composer Charles Ives, yet one of the standouts on Pacific Dust - and really the whole Greg Loiacono songbook - is Side B marvel "Young Charles Ives."

Mother Hips by Andrew Quist

"When I think about music I don't necessarily think about rock & roll all the time," Loiacono quickly retorts. "A good friend of mine, Scott Thunes, who played with Zappa in the '80s, tends to turn me onto amazing stuff. Early on in our friendship I told him I don't know much about [music] theory. I've never studied music in the classical sense. That was his cue to cram all sorts of information into my head. He's got a mind! He gave me Bartók's String Quartets, Firebird Suite and Rite of Spring, and he'd not only give me music but he'd bring the scores to me. Then we'll go for coffee after we drop off the kids and pull out the score for Schoenberg's "Transfigured Night" and sit and listen together. He says, 'Look at this!' and I pretend to understand [laughs]. So, one night as I was leaving to play The Fillmore, Scott says, 'You have to listen to Charles Ives and The Unanswered Question.' So, I put it on, and that fall feeling was descending and I was driving in my car listening to it and was just blown away. It was just the pacing, not this big, dramatic classical piece. Then it moves into these sections where Ives seems to be pasting one orchestra on top of another. By the time I got to The Fillmore to play my little guitar amp my mind was just blown."

"So, I started listening to Ives a lot, and when I told Scott how touched I was he gave me Ives' autobiography. I was reading that and was just fascinated. His retelling of things his father did and said, and his father being the outstanding musician he was did things like tuning his piano to quarter tones because 12 tones just weren't enough for him. He could hear that deeply," continues Loiacono. "There's an image in the book where he's looking out the window and sees his dad standing in the pouring rain looking up at church bells. Then he'd race back into the house and try to tune the piano to find those same beautiful tones. In the book it doesn't really show it in this light, but to me this moment seemed like a realization for young Charlie that his dad is doing his thing simply because he has to. There's this and a lot of scenes where he seems to be telling young Charlie, 'Learn. Do what you gotta do to pass the classes but don't buy it. You can do whatever you want to do.'"

"So, I had the music to ['Young Charles Ives'] but it was going to be called 'Esoteric Dream' or something. Then, I decided to do a topical song - I don't do a lot of those - and this subject matter was moving me. It was also a chance to say, 'Wow, here's this composer who did what he wanted to do,' and his father's presence is so strongly felt. And in the book he speaks of that so earnestly, and I really enjoyed that," says Loiacono. "In learning about and appreciating his music I wanted to make a tribute to that style of music. So, at the end there's that outro that hangs on the C chord and I thought I could take an American classical folk song and graft it on. I'd already figured out I needed strings on that bump, and I ended up deciding to do it with [Ives'] music instead. And we had the strings just record their part and not play to the music, so it has a more sort of surreal feel, like it was just dropped in."

On The Road Again

As fine as what they've wrought on Pacific Dust, it's on stages where the rest of these new stories will be told. Few bands have a more lively, active engagement with their catalog than the Hips, and if the glorious fire 'n' slash witnessed on the Dust tracks at their recent Las Tortugas sets is any indication (see review here), it's going to be a lot of fun for audiences and band alike, starting this Friday and Saturday in Chicago when the Hips team up with another under-sung American treasure, Backyard Tire Fire.

"Of course, for any band playing the new songs onstage is just exciting, to see how they grow and change. It's very enjoyable," says Bluhm. "Some of the studio arrangements don't work and you have to see if you can make them breath in a different way. That's always the challenge... with a lot of things."

Bruce Hornsby walked onstage carrying a stack of requests, waived to the audience, and began to play. He started with a jazz-fusion piece that transcended into a comfortable, soft classical style taking the audience from a storm of sound to a comfortable field of swaying grass. Innocence, passion, and play were all accomplished by this master in his opening piece, "Song H."

Hornsby does not just play the piano; he is an extension of it. Through his fingertips, his tapping feet, pedal pounding, bouncing legs, and general body movement, he plays with his heart and soul till it resonates into words sung very eloquently. Hornsby projects the love of his craft by bringing the audience into his world, as if each member in the crowd was sitting on the piano bench with him. The audience responds with the same enthusiasm, which only builds as his performance progresses.

Hornsby's voice was crisp, the piano one with him, and his playing youthful. His setlist came alive from audience requests, with "Song H" followed by "20/20 Vision," "Harbor Lights," "The Good Life," "Heir Gordon," "Invisible," "Mandolin Rain," and "The Valley Road." Showing off his diverse musical talents, he picked up the dulcimer and played "Prairie Dog Town" and "Shadow Hand." He then continued his request set with "Lost in the Snow," "The End of the Innocence," "Death and the Flower," and finally "The Way It Is."

Bruce Hornsby :: 11.14 :: Illinois

Hornsby then stopped and called the lights up for a brief Q&A with the audience featuring questions such as, "What comes first the music or lyrics?" and "How old are your sons?" which he seemed to question but answered politely, and "What was your most memorable experience touring with The Grateful Dead?" He answered all the questions frankly and thoroughly enough to stop any barrage of further questions sparked by the inquiries. Talking about his Grateful Dead experience, Hornsby explained the next song, "Talk of the Town," was one of Jerry Garcia's favorites. "Talk" morphed into "Charlie, Woody and You" and back to finish "Talk of the Town" and eventually his last audience request was "Gonna Be Some Changes Made." He thanked the audience and then reemerged for a special request encore of "Fortunate Son," "Dreamland," and "Spider Fingers."

"As you get older it is all about the process now and not the mass consumerism that was much simpler," Hornsby stated during the Q&A. That said, it is understandable how his music incorporates jazz, classical, soul, folk, bluegrass, gospel and funk all into his sound, i.e. "The Process."

ekoostik hookah

Today the venerable Ohio jam band institution, ekoostik hookah, offers two announcements about the departure of band founder, bassist, and vocalist Cliff Starbuck. With no plans to end their nearly twenty-year career of playing music, ekoostik hookah will continue playing music, hosting Hookahvilles and touring.

Here is Cliff Starbuck's statement:

After a lot of careful thinking, I have decided to leave the band. Having played with Hookah for almost 19 years, it was an extremely difficult decision, made even more difficult by my love for my band mates and our music. Naturally I'll be coming back to sit in periodically, but after New Year's Eve you'll be enjoying a new bass player. It has been an amazing privilege to spend so many years playing with this band, and I'll always be grateful for the experiences I've had along the way. I've gotten to travel all over the world to play music that I love with all my favorite people.

I've been extremely lucky, and there's no other way I would rather have spent these years. I'm proud to be the musician that I am today, one that I could never have become without the influence of everyone in this band. I know my decision to leave might be surprising and hard to understand, but I'm asking for your support and trust on this. 19 years is a long time for anyone to do the same thing, let alone someone with my short attention span. I feel strongly that this is the right time in my life to explore new options and try new things. It's very sad to be leaving the people with whom I've shared so much, but I'm also excited about the prospect of going new places and seeing what the future might bring. A significant change in my life is essential for me to evolve, not just as a musician but as a person.

It's natural to be resistant to change, especially when it comes to altering a formula that's been so successful for so long. Sometimes veering off from the inevitable path will make the trip more interesting, and ultimately more fulfilling. The band is in the process of finding a bassist who will live up to and probably eclipse my legacy. I'll pass on everything I've learned, but it'll be nice to hear new ideas and a fresh perspective on the bass lines.

Words are inadequate when it comes to trying to express my gratitude for all of your support, and for the good music and good times we've all had together. I'll miss you all and look forward to when our paths cross in the future.

- Cliff

And ekoostik hookah responds with this public statement:

While we are sad to see Cliff go, we respect his decision and wish him the best in whatever he ends up doing. It has been a great honor to be able to spend all of these years together making music and building the wonderful scene that surrounds and supports ekoostik hookah. From a dingy bar in Columbus to Amsterdam, from tiny crowds in Alabama to massive Hookahvilles, it's been an amazing ride. One that would have never been possible without Cliff.

Cliff will be playing with us through the end of the year, his last show being at The Newport in Columbus, Ohio on New Year's Eve. We will then be taking a six week break to work in our new bass player. While Cliff will be missed, we are confident that we will be as strong as ever when we return. It will be exciting to see what this change brings to our music. In the meantime, we plan on making the most of these last few shows with Cliff, and we'll be looking forward to having him come back to sit-in with us on occasion.

See you soon,
The January 22 show will be a special benefit for WHY (World Hunger Year), a non-profit organization that was founded in 1975 to fight poverty in the United States and around the world. Several special guests will be announced for the January 22 show in the coming weeks. Throughout the year, moe. plans to participate in and host events to bring awareness to World Hunger issues, as well as continue working with Headcount, Freedom for Burma, and many other charities.

In addition to the New York City shows, moe. will play throughout their twenty-year home base of the Northeast, with stops in Boston, Ithaca, Rochester and Pennsylvania. They will then head to the West Coast, the Midwest and Southeast. On March 26, 27 and 28, moe. will once again host Snoe.down. The popular winter sports and music festival will take place in Killington and Rutland, VT.
