One fine Saturday evening Saikumar was found restless. Suddenly he went out of the house, put his slippers (hardly has he done that without our prompt) and brought mine inside signaling me to take him outside. (he is non-verbal). So we came out of the house. He pulled me to the parking area of the house, where I use to park my two-wheeler. As we came near to the bike, he signaled me to start the bike. So I took him on the bike thinking that he just wanted to have a small ride.

We went on the road and I was about to take a right turn near the signal. Saikumar started screaming and started jumping just trying to get out of the bike. Since he was sitting in the front he literally turned the handle bar of the bike to the other direction. I thought that probably he wanted to go in the other direction. Hence I turned the bike to the side he wanted to go and he calmed down..

It was literally dark at that time. We were just keeping on going. Suddenly again at some point of time he again started screaming and started to jump out of the bike. I lost control and we were about to fell down. Some how I balanced and slowed down the bike. He again signaled me to turn right. I realized that there was a right branch-off road though it was dark. OOPs …

Now I could understand what he was trying to convey me. That branch-off road leads to the swimming pool of Anna university campus. I have been taking him to the pool on every Saturday with his sister as she was attending coaching classes on swimming. Though he does not swim in the pool, he enjoys each and every minute he is there in the pool jumping and trying to swim inside the pool.

Since it was too late for the day, I didn’t want to take him inside. Hence I parked the vehicle near the entrance. As soon as I parked the bike, he stepped out and started running towards the pool (Atleast 1 km from the main entrance with a couple of left and right turns in between). Saikumar finally ran towards the pool even in the dark (he is normally afraid of darkness) without waiting for me or daring to note if I was following him and finally reached there, dipped himself in the pool for a few minutes.

I was astonished to note his sharp memory about the path to swimming pool he has grasped into his mind and the sudden courage he gained to go out in the dark alone. That incident was yet another milestone in his achievements (Visual - spatial intelligence?) .
