The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step...you're taking a bunch of big steps by doing this! Get the little book from Kevin that I let him borrow, The Truth about You by Marcus Buckingham.

This was a great counter-argument to Driscoll's youtube blurb. I enjoyed it. I would like to add one little comment on hierarchy after grappling with this myself.

There is a distinct hierarchy in the home but it rarely need come into play. Mutual love, respect, and submission are the words of the day and on rare, rare occasions there may be an issue upon which there can be no agreement. Then and only then does the "tiebreaker" come in.

It is so funny to me that we make such a big deal out of authority/headship because we are looking at it through power-struggle lenses. Headship need not contain a power struggle or any malice, ill-will, or lack of sacrificial love. I think if we could all get our eyes off of the fleshly manner of doing things and just take a moment to look at the way God does things, we'd have a real revelation on this issue.

I think the Shack is trying to portray this different viewpoint to us and it is sad that we have become so religious that we just can't read it for what it is. It's an analogy. Period. Like the parables. Do I really believe Jesus is herding sheep up in Heaven? No. The Good Shepherd is an analogy. Just like this book.

I haven't read the book yet but several of my family and friends have been raving about it, and it's sitting on my desk at home, so I should probably give it a go. Thanks for the awesome review, James!

Yeah, I was in for a shock when I went home for a visit and there were so many people (my pastor included) dead set against this book! It sort of reminds me when everyone was screaming about the terrible end times theology in the Left Behind series. Neither the LB series nor The Shack ever claim to want to have a new take on theology. In fact, the problems that everyone keeps talking to me about, I never even considered. I did think (all by myself, without help or anything) that maybe the author should have been clearer on salvation, but I also understood that, again, this wasn't really the purpose of the story. It's just a story for crying out loud! In my opinion, it relates a story of forgiveness, healing and redemption to a world that desperately needs to hear it without those so easily judged "Christian" connotations.

And all the video with Mark Driscoll did was tick me off... apparently someone is judging a book by what he's read about it on the internet...
