“I love my Kindle! It’s turned me into such a reader. Have you read this series – I blew through it in like a week!”

I hadn’t read the series she was talking about. But I’d heard of it. And I knew it was self published. So I asked, “Do you read mostly on your Kindle?”

“Yep. It’s so easy, and there are so many great books out there.”

“That series is self published, isn’t it? Do you care who the publisher is? ” I asked the question tentatively. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to know her answer. It felt at that moment like it was a huge deal. Like everything hinged on this woman’s answer.

She shrugged and checked the foils in my hair. “I don’t care who publishes it as long as the story is good. And this was fantastic! You should totally read it!”

“I’ll check it out, for sure.” I paused. Took a deep breath. Said the words I’d never said before to a stranger. “I write young adult books too.”

Her eyes widened and she grinned. “Really? That’s so cool! Do you have anything out? I want to read it!”

“Not yet, but I have something close to being ready.” I felt almost buoyant. Freed in a way. Here was a stranger who was excited about one of my books. And she didn’t care how she got it, she just wanted it in her hands.

“Hurry up and get it out! This is so exciting!” And she proceeded to tell the rest of the salon that I was an author. While I sat there, looking ridiculous, with foil in my hair.

I wanted the floor to swallow me whole. And then  I realized, being an author is my dream. It’s what I’ve been working toward for so long now. What I’ve gotten SO close with – agents, publishers, readers. It wasn’t a lack of skill – I’d heard over and over in nice emails from wonderful agents that I had something special.  Even had a couple of offers. It wasn’t that people didn’t like my concept or characters. It was some nebulous thing that I didn’t really have control over – subjectivity… market… luck….timing.

And I realized at that moment I was waiting for someone else to tell me yes. Waiting for someone else to validate me – either by offering rep, or a contract, or something that would show the world that I’d made it.

But the thing is, sitting there in that salon with a dozen women cooing over me and wanting to read my book, I realized it wasn’t really about those things. It’s about readers. It’s about putting out a well written, well edited book that you think readers will connect with. It’s about sharing a book you love with people you think will love it too.

And I think I have one of those.

So I am excited to announce that ULTRAVIOLET CATASTROPHE will be published this October!

There’s still a lot of work to do – editing, covers, formatting, promotion. But in just a few months, you guys will be able to read it for yourself. Hang out in the world I created, meet my characters. I am so excited for the opportunity to share this book with all of you – I  hope you love it as much as I do! I want to thank all of you who’ve been so supportive, gracious and kind to read and comment on my book, who’ve encouraged me and helped me through all the craziness that this business can bring. I wouldn’t be here without you!

And then my stylist told me her story. She was at a job in sales making 100k a year. And she hated every minute. She wanted to do something she loved, and that meant being creative. So she quit her job, went back to school, and became a stylist. She took a huge paycut but she loves going to work every day. (and yes, I could turn this into a story about following your dreams, but that’s a topic for another day!)

Then she said – “You don’t want to be a fifty year old woman who always regrets not doing this. Have fun, go for it!”

And I realized she was right. There are so many things I don’t do because I’m afraid of what other people might think. And I didn’t want that regret, so in a tiny act of rebellion, I did it.

And I love it. And the people I work with so far have thought it cute and fun and daring.

And then I realized, I’d told myself a story about how I “should” be behaving as Jamie the Day Job Worker. I also had a story about how I think other people are going to react, which may or may not be based in reality. I even had a story about how my stylist saw me as a client.

We all tell ourselves stories – and it’s amazing how much those stories affect what we do or don’t do. How we respond to a situation or person. What we think is acceptable behavior.

I’m not going to self publish because people will look down on me.

I have to have an agent/traditional publishing deal/sell as many copies as Author X to be successful.

People will think I’m a freak or think I’m irresponsible if I have purple hair.

That person’s comment was directed at me, I know it!

I can’t do that, what if I fail and everyone finds out? They’ll judge me.

All stories I’ve told myself. All of them untrue. All of them holding me back from doing something *I* want to do or saying something *I* want to say.

It’s funny, I write stories all day, but when it comes down to it, the biggest fictions I find are in my own mind.

Let me tell you, this cover is SO perfect for this book – there’s the beach, a motorcycle, and best of all Evan and Ginny. What more could you ask for! So….without further ado….I give you the cover for EYRE HOUSE!!!

I was lucky enough to read this book as a Beta, and OMG let me tell you, it’s so fantastic – steamy, hot, romantic, and just plain fun. I mean who wouldn’t want to read a book with a description like this:

Fashion design major Cat Mitchell has a closet full of gorgeous clothes – and not a single thing fits. After two years of runway modeling for easy cash, an accident shattered her lower leg bone and her self-esteem in just one swift fall. Ten months of no exercise, prescription steroids, comfort eating and yoga pants meant returning to campus as a size twelve instead of her former size two.

But when Cat goes home with Nate for Thanksgiving, she discovers something shocking from his recent past that proves that he hasn’t always been so encouraging of women of all shapes and sizes. Cat has no idea what to think, but she does know one thing – this might destroy their relationship before it’s even had a chance to get off the ground.

Before Cat can figure out whether the real Nate is the sensitive, adoring guy she fell in love with, or an undercover asshole, she’ll have to finally feel comfortable in her own skin – even if it means leaving him forever.
