Catherine O’Driscoll writes, “According to Dr. Dodds, the vaccines we give to our dogs in the belief that we are protecting them, could in fact be damaging them by causing their own bodies to self-destruct.” This statement sums up very well one of the messages of O’Driscoll’s book Shock to the System: The facts about animal vaccination, pet food and how to keep your pets healthy. It is a well-known fact now that vaccines can have a nasty effect on our beloved pets, including autoimmune diseases (diseases where the immune system attacks the body; like leukaemia. And according to Dr. Dodds, autoimmune disease could be brought on by any of the following: a virus, vaccine, sex hormones, or stress. Vaccines can also cause allergic reactions, even paralysis. Shocked at all of her findings, which were triggered by the loss of two of her own dogs shortly after vaccinations, O’Driscoll and her ex-husband set out to find out why veterinarians would continue to promote annual shots that were potentially harmful–even deadly–to the animals.

Shortly thereafter, they founded the Canine Health Concern, an organization that would be responsible for checking out the causes of good and bad health of dogs. Their feeling was that if the research were done by dog lovers instead of doctors (who O’Driscoll says are educated in a system that relies on commerce for funding), the results would be much more accurate.

Shock to the System is a detailed account of their findings, focusing on vaccines, what the vaccines are immunizing dogs against, and even a chapter on food. This book is very compelling and informative. To purchase the book, click the image of the book above or click here.

Until next time,

When I Talk2theAnimals I am doing just that, having a conversation with a different species. Usually a conversation is simply a conversation, but there are times when it is helpful to know more about the animal to help me understand their point of view. The environment in which they are found, their biological habits, their coloring and even their mythological and symbolic meanings all help me to comprehend in a fuller way their conversation.

Below is a partial listing of symbolic qualities of birds, which is found in Ted Andrews’ book ‘Animal Speak’. If you are interested in learning more about the animals, I highly recommend this book.

Blackbird – Omens and mysticism

Bluebird – Happiness and fulfillment

Cardinal – Renewed Vitality

Crow – Intelligence, watchfulness

Finch – New experiences

Loon – Realizing dreams

Oriole – Positive energy

Pigeon – Love and security of home

Robin – New growth

Turkey – Shared blessings

Woodpecker – Following your own drumbeat

The next time you encounter a bird, consider what it’s symbology/mythology has to add to the conversation.

Muskrats are found in North America and have also been recently introduced in Asia, South America, and Europe.
They are found in marshy lands close to salt water or fresh water wetlands, ponds, rivers, or lakes.

Many parts of the United States are getting colder, now that we’re in fall and fast approaching winter. Minnesota has already gotten several inches of snow, most of which have melted by now. Boston and New Jersey have even gotten snow! So, because of this cold weather, we are now thinking about preparing our pets for the long winter.

Remember to watch your pets closely when you take them outside. If they are out too long in cold temperatures, they could develop hypothermia. Symptoms can include shivering, stiffness, acting sluggish or clumsy, plummeting heart rate and breathing rate, dilated pupils, and even collapsing. You can help prevent this and problems such as frostbite by purchasing coats and booties for your pets that need it. It is also a good thing to not let your pets stay out as long, but let them out more frequently. Frostbite can really sneak up on you. Remember to watch the tail, ears, and paws!

It is important that when you do let your pets out, dry them off when they come back into the house, and let them rest and get warm. This article gives a list of handy equipment to have for winter, including the following:

Sweaters, rain gear, fleece wraps, snowsuits, and coats.

Heating pads and thermal dog beds (for outside use).

Pet door so your dog can come inside if it gets too cold.

Water bowls with heating elements.

If your pet is spending the winter months outdoors, it is vital that they have a small shelter to go to, like a dog house. According to this article, the shelter should face away from the wind, be covered so it is weather-proof, and be lined on the inside with old blankets, towels, or soft bedding material. Straw can also be used. Again, if you are keeping your pet outdoors, you might want to feed them more, since they will be burning more calories by trying to stay warm. Watering should also be increased, so your pets stay hydrated.

As you get ready for winter, remember these tips, and stay warm!
