JANET WOLBARST PHOTOGRAPHY IS RELOCATING

I have sold my home and am going to be relocating. I do not know ‘where’ as of now.

If you are interested in having your senior portrait done this summer with me you absolutely need to call me as soon as possible and I will put you on a list. I need your name, cell number, email address to put you on the list. Once I have a number of students I will then set aside specific dates for shooting and contact you with the date/time for your session.

The dates will be the during the:

Last week of May, first week in June, last week in June and at least the first week in July.

I will not be shooting senior portraits in Wayland after July, but if you feel like traveling up to Maine during August, that would be a possibility.

I have been honored and thrilled to have had the opportunity to interact with so many wonderful clients in Wayland, Sudbury, Natick, Newton Country Day and so many others. You are all special and have left quite an impact on my heart. I can remember where I took every photo… and our conversations. Thank you.  ~ Janet

Re-processed Madaket images from 2006 and found quite a few images worth taking a second look. Thoughts?

It’s that time of year when I try to clear out my hard drives. I was working on the class of 2011 and came across Megan’s images from her senior session. The light was lovely, so was she… and I decided to re-work some of her images. During senior season, time is tight and it’s a chase between scheduling and the weather. It’s New England and we never know. But, I do remember this day very well. She wore white. If you’ve had a session with me, you will clearly know that white is not my favorite color to shoot, especially if you have dark hair or complexion. It’s not as much of a challenge if you have blonde hair, but then it depends on the light. Lately, I’ve been enjoying working with the snow, since we’ve had so much of it this winter. And, on occasion, I’ll work with you if you wear white. You’ll have to check with me first and it must not be your only choice.

Going through Megan’s images I saw something very special. She’s adorable to begin with but there’s a playfulness with her that starts as the session begins and continues through the end. She relaxes and becomes totally at ease in front of the camera. It’s what I hope to achieve during every session. It’s magical when it happens.

Shooting senior portraits is special. This isn’t just another day in the life of a rising senior. It’s a huge day, one that will capture who you are at this incredible time in your life. You have much to look forward to, places to explore and decisions to make that will ultimately determine your path. I am honored that my clients choose me to document this time of their life. The resulting prints  purchased are heirloom quality.

I’ve edited Megan’s images with Lightroom and Photoshop. I’ve explored crops that enhance the images. Thank you Megan for allowing me to post these images post graduation. I hope you are well!

Caterina arrived the day after yet another winter snow storm where 24″ of snow tried to get in our way. Thankfully, it was warm out with the sun shining. She is adorable and was such an easy girl to work with!Now I’m thinking that snow will never get in my way for a successful photo session. Got away this morning to one of my favorite places to watch the surf pound the shoreline, Gloucester, MA, on Atlantic Avenue. It’s quite a challenge to capture these crashing waves, but I always enjoy it…

Today is such an emotional day. I am so shaken by the horrific event that took your life. I meet so many beautiful young adults and they all mean so much to me. I remember them, all of them. You were special. Your session was emotional and I wish you were here to laugh with me about it.

This gallery includes images from Cusco in the market and Pisac during the festival Virgen del Carmen. It is also held in Paurcartambo (near Cusco). Pisac is in the Urubamba Valley. ‘Mamacha Carmen’ as she is commonly known, defeats the demons who climb up on rooftops and balconies during her procession around the streets of Pisac and Paurcartambo.  Non stop masked dancing carried on for three days running. It’s a crazy time and a huge drinking binge, but it was also a lot of fun. Pisac was a much milder version of Paurcartambo, Gallery four.

This is my third try, working on a Peru book of fine art images. I’ll getting close to needing an editor for this project. One company that I’m considering, FloricolorUSA.com has a page limit (I have more images than they allow) and if I did use them,  the size I would use is 12×12. There are only two sizes available for Art Books and they are 12 x 12 and 12 x 16. While I like the landscape orientation of the 12 x 16, it’s too large to handle. I don’t love 12 x 12  for horizontal images. I’m also considering www.couturebook.com. Their books are simply incredible, the leathers, cases, paper selections are all gorgeous. As I edit through the images I believe the book will take its own form. I’m excited to see what happens. I will post a few samples in the next post.

Current  High School Juniors! I’m planning on offering high end books for your sessions and I will be taking limited number of students for these sessions. If you are interested, (take a look at the companies above) and book your session early. Get your creative juices flowing for your special senior portrait session.

We continue the session with window light images and then a move into the studio, exploring a reflective background and a starfish softbox.

Katrina: stunning. Perfect images for a gorgeous layflat full color hardcover book… It’s going to be amazing. Here is the first set with many more to follow.

These images were shot indoors using natural light from a window and one reflector. The first backdrop is also reflective. The light from the window was overcast during mid afternoon creating a soft wash of light. The black backdrop is made of black velvet.

Make an appointment now for your session… it’s the perfect time of year to do it, it’s warm and cozy in the studio.

She’s almost 4. January 18th. She got a birthday card today from her insurance company. Hysterical! She’s so cute, we practiced with a new backdrop.

What a great time I had with Matt. It was a hot summer day, (seems so long ago), but he was a real charmer and a lot of fun to work with. I kept seeing a little bit of Brad Pitt in him and once I did, it was easy to keep him smiling and happy. One thing that was very special about Matt was how he handled himself post- session. I don’t think I’ve met a more polite senior. It was a treat working with him.

Decided to take a ride to the North Shore today. I’m surrounded by trees where I live and am anxious to explore the coast of Massachusetts. I’ve spent plenty of time on the Cape (south shore) and the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. The ‘other’ Cape offers a gorgeous coastline. These images were taken in Rocky Neck.

The sweetest kids ever! They came in the same day and slightly overlapped. It was one of those strange weather days and we pulled it off. They were so different when apart and then when photographed together they were a unit. A totally enjoyable day for me!

Ashley’s session was full of gorgeous autumn afternoon light which perfect suited her personality. She was a delight to shoot and her personality comes through in these images. There were so many for her family to pick that they decided to do a senior portrait session book. I hope they will enjoy her images for many years to come, representing this special time in Ashley’s life. This is a sampling from the book.

I made her laugh, moan, and giggle. I probably gave her a headache too! Had her sit in the middle of the road but she had a great time all around.

This is a quick view of some of the madness during a shoot. Wrapping up a delightful and totally enjoyable senior portrait session season today.

Sometimes a kid comes a long and just brings sunshine with her. I’m not talking about the sun above but more the sunshine within. She was very excited to be here shooting with me, had a blast with Riley and she was just about as mature and sweet as could be.  At one point, while fixing her hair or probably doing the ‘flip’ thing, (girls, you know what I mean), she just burst in to laughter. She does have a certain glow about her, though, doesn’t she?

This image is what I needed today, after finally getting electricity back and hearing all of the horribly tragic stories coming out of NYC.

She brings joy to my day.

I talk about Bridge Over Troubled Waters often and there’s a story behind my relationship with this place.

After my mom passed away I had a serendipity moment in Quincy, where I grew up, when a young woman who I babysat drove by with her children and we reconnected. One thing led to another during this chance meeting…. she was going to be in Wayland the next day to attend an Autumn event at Russell’s. She would be representing Bridge Over Troubled Waters, where she was responsible for Publicity and Fundraising.

Fast forward… I attended the event, we had dinner together afterwards and Karin began to describe the kids who needed Bridge and were ‘faceless’. People often walk away from or cross the street to avoid looking in to the faces of homeless or needy kids in Boston and she wanted people to ‘see’ them as she does…. It took me about two seconds to offer to help people ‘see’ these kids by doing their portraits.

I had been searching for an organization to volunteer  with and Bridge was a perfect fit for me. I enlisted professionals to help me out, not knowing exactly what we were going to do: Patti Schulze, a fine art photographer and friend from Dallas, TX flew up to shoot the first time, Robin Enright, from Wayland and now Boulder, CO, was enlisted to write as well as Nancy Bergstein from Sudbury, to help tell the stories of these kids. Cheryl Savit of Sudbury has written pieces for Bridge and now Wendy Price of Wayland is very involved and is an integral part of the team and working at Bridge.

For me? My visits at Bridge are what makes me whole. I am humbled by these kids. I hear their stories, they are 17, 18, 19 years old… and they wear their stories on their faces and try hard to smile and fit in to find their way in this world. They have been thrown huge curves in life yet they have found their way to a shower, clean clothes, a hearty meal and a warm hand and heart at Bridge. They will find counseling and medical care and a place to feel at home for a few hours. They can attend GED classes and find their passions, have dreams like other kids their age and feel as if they too can have a future.

It’s the least I can do, to show you their faces.  And, all from one ‘chance’ meeting on Alrick Road. Serendipity. Thank you Mom.

The following 2013 seniors have been sent to the high school. I am waiting one more session. This ONLY applies to WHS.

Trying to catch up with printing and Dena gave me the perfect push to print Cori’s images today. It was perfect as they are gorgeous, bright and sunny. I had met Cori about fifteen years ago and not again until the day of her shoot. She’s sweet and told me she was looking forward to this day since her sister Allie had met with me for her session a few years ago. And, on the same day, she got a new puppy! I’m sure this was a memorable day for her!

It was for me!  And it made this cold and dreary October day a bit warmer.

Rory arrived for his portrait session on a fairly cloudy day. He wore one sweater, no changes and was patient with the trials and tribulations of numerous natural light situations. Towards the end of the session we explored the light at the edge of the shed and it was fabulous!  The light fell perfectly on his face and it became a perfect session.

What can I say about Annie without embarrassing her? She, to me, is sweet with an incredible sense of confidence and calmness. She was poised and relaxed during the entire session. She connected with me and remained herself and her images show this. I don’t think there was a tense bone in her body on this day. It was a pleasure to work with her. Thank you Annie!

If you ask Annie, she’ll say that Riley just wasn’t ‘having it’ this day. She was pooped and wasn’t herself….:(

It’s wise to not discard images from a first edit. I took a look back at my images from New Orleans after learning about Vivian Maier, a Chicago nanny, who had taken thousands of images only to be discovered after she passed away. I am fascinated with her work and decided to go back and look at work I had done in New Orleans. This is a first set. Most of them have not been posted before, although if you search for New Orleans on the left panel of the website, you will find three previous posts. After my recent travel to Peru with Nevada Weir, I’ve been reminded to go back and look at images with a fresh eye.

One of my favorites from yesterday. Gorgeous girl, cute dog, (of course) and lovely fall afternoon light…

I had a little bee problem and after Riley laid down on a nest and looked like she was having a seizure while being stung by one of the little buggers, it was time to remove them. Bill came today and when he showed up I almost forgot about the bees altogether. Look at his face! Is he the perfect bee keeper/remover? He was so sweet! He gave me a bottle of honey and one for Lisa. He kills them and keeps them. I guess that’s okay. What a face…

John was fun to work with, kind of quiet, but I bet not in real life. Very charming and an amazing smile. He and Riley hit if off, I crack up every time I see her little face looking at me in between his arm and leg as he is squatting down. Sorry John, she stole the show in that image. Great kid, sunny day, wow, just a month ago and the weather was so different.

Thank you so much for choosing me to do your portraits. I am plugging away at answering emails, printing orders and shooting sessions every day, as well as meeting with parents. The pile for printing is getting high, thank you all very much!, and I’m printing in order. I will send emails when the prints are ready for pickup, please come asap to pick up and leave your check in the wooden bucket on the farmer’s porch. Presently, there are two orders on the porch and they come inside at night, but they’ve been there too long. Please do not wait to pick up.

Website: I will be adding more seniors and sessions to the website when I can and I’ll try to get everyone on there. I may start having to do group entries as there have been over 70 sessions so far. Please be patient and understanding.  I want to put everyone on the site eventually, so you’ll have to keep checking.

Just trying to prioritize!

The weather has been great, the kids are wonderful, you are all superstars and I appreciate your trust in me and my work.

Bookmark or subscribe to the site so you can stay in touch and know when I have ‘specials’ or ideas to share. I will be asking for models from time to time. The indoor studio will be open all year as well when you need an amazing new portrait. Call for an appointment.

This image in black and white just pops.

It will amazing on a wall in a prominent place in their home.

Amelia is such a beautiful young lady and was stunning during the entire session. Her hair is straight and fine and this could have been a challenge. But, as you can see it wasn’t.

It’s magical when my clients relax and become friends with the lens. My camera is large and can be intimidating but this Nikon d3s is my friend and the images we create always blow me away.  Amelia seemed to feel at ease almost immediately and her session was a breeze.

The images have been retouched and cropped to enhance her beauty. The images below would be beautiful anywhere but I imagine them (and any of my past and present clients) large, framed and on a wall in her home.

What a sweet face…

Laura and I had fun with the light, well at least I did! It was a beautiful warm and sunny summer day late last month. Her tan glowed and her smile radiated. But, her hair is amazing, long and gorgeous. So is she. Fun session Laura!

When a remarkable girl shows up for her shoot and tells me a bit about herself, (in this case a musician, who enjoys piano, guitar, flute and singing), I get excited thinking about what else can we do during a session. I explain to the kids that a portrait to me is a collaboration between me and my subject. We start out as strangers and then we slowly start to connect and trust each other. She will trust me and I will trust that she and I are connecting. I was so lucky today with Julia and sent her this note while I was editing her session.  I see an album cover for her music…

Isabel, what a great session. She brought lots of energy and chatter and was so much fun to work with. It was another sunny day during a great stretch of weather and she added to the sunshine.

Riley took to her and was present during most of the session. She paid attention to her clothing and had a wonderful presence. Her beautiful hair bounced and bright her blue eyes sparkled with her personality. Thanks Isabel!

Emily arrived here like a rush of fresh summer air. Her adorable personality, spunky step and excitability on this day were perfect. When clients arrive with a great frame of mind, work closely with me to unravel preconceived ideas of what they think they are supposed to do or look like and allow nature plus a few directions from me take it’s natural course, the session just fits like a glove. From start to finish, from initial conversations, the shoot and the final ordering session, Emily rocked. Previously, her Riley pic was posted, please scroll down to see it.

Maddy is quite and impressive and sweet girl. She’s adventurous, interesting and brilliant. It was a beautiful sunny day and Maddy brightened the day with her big smile and lively eyes. Loved this session!
