Now, that’s a face that tells it all.

check out her text message.

Met Maria from Mexico City. Congratulations Maria!

This woman just ran 26 + miles and looks like this. Wow. She’s from Texas. What does she know that we don’t know?

All in all I’m liking the camera. Still have a long way to go to get comfortable with it. Who wants to play?

Day one with a new camera. Working with this incredible smaller package. I am looking for a smaller, lighter camera to take with me to Peru, in addition to the d3s and d700. I know that there will be some days when I will not want to lug around a heavy dslr. I’ve tried the Nikon p7100 and I was disappointed. The images were grainy and not at all the quality I wanted. That camera was returned. I’m trying the Fujifilm – XPRO-1 now and a more detailed review will be posted once I’ve learned more about it and have practiced, practiced and practiced… did I say practice? I believe that my camera must become an extension of my vision, of my body in order to create the images I do. I must know how to work the camera, evaluate the light, capture my subject all in a split second. Working with this camera will require a learning curve and I’m up for the challenge. Perhaps tomorrow I’ll try the Boston Marathon…

Here are a few images from the first attempt. And, then on to editing the lovely Newton Country Day senior from yesterday, post to follow.

I followed this couple for a while. They had such a cute gait. They just rocked from side to side as they walked.

I need to get this sharper and more in focus, but I loved the image just the same. Colors are untouched.

I’m excited that I will be her sponsor for her senior project at Wayland High School. I have a good idea what she will be working on and I look forward to working with her.

There’s an upside to this for me as well! She and I explored the light in my available/natural light studio. I’ve been looking for an area to empty and paint the walls white. I didn’t have too look far, it’s the room right off of my studio. I installed a new wood floor and the walls were painted. I think it’s going to be so much fun to work in. It’s perfect for head shots and yesterday I added a black backdrop with another client and it worked perfectly. (Images to follow).

In the meantime, here are a few new shots of KK.

I have recharged, I have renovated, I’ve lost weight and I am energized! The studio has been de-cluttered and feels awesome. It’s going to be fun to work in the space and am booking “Friends and Fun” sessions now. (Stay tuned for a fun contest to be announced very soon to win a session with you and your five best friends!).

I may have been absent from here, but I’ve been so busy! I have a new blog-site and that took months to do. I’m proud to say that I created it myself with Prophoto4. I love those guys. They are so helpful and amazing. At one point, all of the photos on the blog were ‘missing’, but it all worked out. I happily left bludomain and switched hosts to bluehost. Now, I should not have any ‘space’ issues. Client proofing is still being worked out, but truthfully? I’ve always preferred clients coming back to the studio to view their images. I love to watch their reactions when they view their images…

Since the flurry of the lovely Newton Country Day girls in late December, here’s a look at what I’ve been doing. I also used a Nikon p7100 for most of these images. I’m not thrilled with it, very grainy. I’ve got a Nikon d800 on order and I hope it arrives before the big trip to Peru in July.

Jonah turned 25 at 4:31 pm

Lisa and Riley snuggled.

I took one last look at the kitchen and decided the ‘pink’ cabinets had to go and embarked on a renovation…. blog post to come…

Had lots of comfy fires.

Jonah gave me five minutes to take a few images of him. Lucky me!

Alicia (above) and Ainsley (below) had photo sessions.

A few trips to Bridge Over Troubled Waters, the boys above were leaving the shelter to go to their new apartment!

Bodie and Emily came for a visit. Bodie is now double the size of Riley. Watch out Riley!

My new oven! and no more ugly cabinets!

Love playing with the filament in the new lights over the island!

Visited my brother’s home in NH and love this view of the ‘Notch’ .

A little hike with snow shoes through the Flume.

Cocktails at the Mt. Washington Hotel.

Couldn’t resist playing with the light above.

A wine tasting at the Skywalk at the Prudential with Lisa and Marc.

Look at all the cars below. They are all either black, white or taupe. Only two red cars. This is Newbury St., Marlboro St. and Commonwealth Ave.

In between courses… got camera? got to play.

In the past, I did not enjoy having my clients visit the blog for updates and to see when their photos would be posted and then send them to my website for viewing their proofs. The different appearance of both tools was bothersome to me. I had spend a lot of time with first the website and then the blog to try to pull them together, but it didn’t work for me any longer.

My blog is created with a wonderful company, ProPhoto, and recently they have come up with some very cool templates. My website and mail had been with Bludomain, a company that has treated me well for years, but I have outgrown them. The main issue I had with hosting with them was that was that if I continued hosting with them I would run out of space on their server. I was constantly on the edge of crashing my website and I would have to limit posting on my blog and clamp down further on client proofing. This winter I decided it was a no brainer, it was time to move on and I had to first switch hosting companies.

I decided on Bluehost. First contact with them was awesome, they actually have live phone support. No more sending an email and waiting, sometimes for days to get a reply or an answer from Bludomain. I signed up and started building this new blog. It looked different at first while I tried out different templates and colors. I eventually decided that I wanted to keep some of the design elements I’ve been using and slowly update and revitalize them. However, I had so many images to transfer from one host the the other. The concept was to build this site temporarily while I remained online with bludomain. The options looked good and Matt at ProPhoto began the arduous process of moving the blog content. Days passed and it failed. He had to start over. Eventually, all of the content was copied to the new location.

I decided that once I almost had it designed the way I wanted it, I would notify bludomain that I needed a release from their hosting, renew my domains and start the official move to bluehost. Then, a seven day period occurs, while the internet ‘transfers’, ‘points’, ‘directs’, ‘moves’… all these words that seemed frightening to me.

I decided a few weeks ago that it was time to do it, approved the transfer process and I waited. While that was occurring, I changed my mind about the ‘look’ of the blog, of course and got to work on what you see now. I waited. And waited. Day seven occurred, my old blog went dead, a message appeared about the ‘brand spankin’ new blog and I went on the admin section of the blog and my hundreds if not thousands of photos were gone. They didn’t make it to the new site. I can’t begin to tell you what that period was like while these two companies who have no phone support needed information from one another and I had to be the middle person. The issue could have been fixed in ten minutes but it took almost two weeks. That’s why I always say, ‘pick up the phone and call if you really want action’.

Panic? Yes. After a two week period of worry and hard work, Matt came to the rescue and the images were found. He’s a big man to admit that he had made a mistake the first time, but, all is good now and here we are.

THE NEW BLOGSITE | WHAT IS IT?

Here, you will be able to view everything you want. You can read the blog, search for old posts, type in any word (or your name) in the search area and a grid of posts will show up. You can hover over the thumbnails to read the first sentence of the post and to view the photos. One thing that is not worked out yet is if I able to crop the photos in the thumbnails so you can see faces and not cut off heads. I might just have to deal with that for now.

You can link a post to facebook, you can share a post to facebook, you can make comments, pin to pinterest, email a post to a friend… this is fun!

On the tabs above, you can find all the information you need about senior portrait, family, corporate sessions. You can read about Riley and about why you would want to hire me, (About- Behind the lens), view galleries of seniors, corporate head shots, informal portraits, street work, kids and families. Also available are galleries of my Fine Art Work. Those galleries will continue to grow as I add images. This is a work in progress as I have years of images to go through. The images there will be available for prints in two sizes and framing is available now at Janet Wolbarst Photography.

That’s it for now. Next up: what else is new here | kitchen renovation | studio organization | new dressing room and bathroom | 23 lbs lost … | loving this winter…

Stay tuned and have a great day!

Here are additional images from my trip to NYC. This time, I only took one new lens, a bit out of my comfort level. The Nikon D3s and the 28-300, the lens that Jay Maisel uses and loves. He often takes images of people without them knowing. When they do notice him, he typically will nod, smile and acknowledge him and then they move on.

I, on the other hand, prefer to forge a relationship with the person I am photographing and will shoot with my 50 mm 1.4. Shooting with the 28-300 was interesting. I found myself experimenting more and even trying landscapes

Third floor at Jay Maisel’s. The champagne bottles.

I love Haters? Look at that man’s sweat shirt…

Jonah found something fascinating between the floor boards of the bridge. Using his iphone.

Ah.. the love locks. I’d like to add a lock there someday…. maybe this year!

A sampling of the regular cast of characters on the Brooklyn Bridge on a typical Friday. I would say that it was 25/75 - residents/tourists.

Don’t know this guy, but thank you for this shot.

The D3s at work…. taken at iso 5000 1/25th @ 5.6

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!

Poised, beautiful, sweet and charming. Huge brown eyes and lots of soft confidence, Makenzie left quite an impression on me. She talked highly of her classmates, school and was such a pleasure to be with. It was late in the season and a little cool, taken after Thanksgiving, but the weather cooperated.

Just a reminder to those reading this, that I start senior sessions in June. This year, there will be no sessions in July and I will continue shooting in August. If you want an August session, please call in June to book it. I will not be scheduling during July, from July 2-24th as I will be in Peru, shooting portraits and exploring the country with National Geographic Photographer Nevada Wier.

I will post this info on my facebook page: Janet Wolbarst Photography. Please ‘like’ it to keep up to date. Information will be posted here as well. Send me an email if you would like to be on my mailing list: janet@janetwolbarst.com.

Back to Makenzie… enjoy her photos, she’s delightful!

thank you!

Did a little cleaning and organizing and then took off to see Lysistrata Jones, an interesting, fun and energetic play that just opened on Broadway. Alex Wyse, one of Jonah’s BU CFA ’09 classmates has a main role he’s great. It was a lot of fun.

The next morning we were back at 190 Bowery: www.jaymaisel.com/ I was there to pick up my print: http://studio.jaymaisel.com/collections/miscellaneous#tomatos-and-bottles-in-window. I was so excited to see that I have the first print of this limited edition. ( 1/25 ) I saw this print originally during the workshop in May ’11.

I just realized that this image was taken on August 16th, 2009. 0816. Good numbers if you know me…

We walked around the second and third floor, (just as amazing as the first time I saw it), and then I got a huge hug from Jay, I guess I made a memorable impression on him, he called to me, ‘hey gorgeous’ and either he did remember me or he’s a great actor. He invited Jonah and me to come in to a review session and Jonah and I jumped on the opportunity and participated. What a special day!

After that we ate at Lombardi’s pizza and took off on our journey, to walk the Brooklyn Bridge. Here are a few images from that long walk.

‘Nailed’

All of these images were taken with the D3s and 28-300 5.6 lens. This is not the way I shoot or any way I’m used to. I enjoyed it and started to feel comfortable with it. But, I have a long way to go in order to get ready for Peru. But, isn’t it weird that I’m still shooting people.

Then at night, we saw the most amazing theatrical production of ‘War Horse’ at Lincoln Center. Every second of this show was incredible. I stood up and cheered and cried at the end. It was just lovely and remarkably memorable. I think I’m forever changed after seeing it.

She brought her dog, Theo! If you know me, you would never know that I’m not a real dog lover, I’m actually afraid of {large} dogs. I just love Riley, because, if you know her, you know that she’s not really a dog. She doesn’t seem like a dog to me.

So, Kenzie and her mom, (who is the most wonderful, happy, cheerful mom… ) show up with this huge guy, Theo! He’s a teddy bear! I loved him! What a charming face and the love between Kenzie and her puppy is evident. What a wonderful boy!

Kenzie’s beauty just glows from her eyes, smile and from the energy she emits. We had a lot of fun during this session, the light was great and it was so hot out! We hung in there and had a fabulous time.

Thanks for the warmth today, Kenzie!

A special young woman. She came in to our lives two summers ago. She was one of my dad’s first full time 24 hour caregivers. I spent a lot of time with them that weekend. I brought Riley with me and we went to Castle Island.

I’m not sure who was having the most fun that day, my dad? me? Riley? Ruth? I think Ruth was getting a kick out of me and Riley. She couldn’t quite understand this hurricane of a person who came over that day, (me ) and Riley was such an adorable puppy! But, for the first time in a long time since my mom had passed away, my dad started to get excited about people in general and was learning so much about himself as an 87 year old guy. His strengths and weaknesses and one very major quality, his ability to listen. One thing he told me over and over was how he was helping these girls who came to help him. He would listen to their stories, about their lives and engage them in conversations on every level. He always believed that he was helping them with their lives, more than they were helping him. This of course, changed over time and I believe when he felt that he became the bigger burden he didn’t want to live any longer.

Ruth was special because she always was a cheerleader but very authentic. He believed her. If she said he could get the strength to do one of his every day tasks, by golly, he did it.

Ruth came and went over the last year and a half. When he was in the hospital during the Hurricane during the summer, it was Ruth who stayed by his side 24/7. She hardly complained although we could tell that it was very stressful and too many hours but she did it and with hardly any sleep came back a day or two later when we were in a bind.

She was also there the last day. She had heard from her employer that dad wasn’t taking his meds. She didn’t realize that he was ending his life, that he decided the evening before that he did not want to inject insulin any longer, that he was ‘done’. She wasn’t told.

She came bouncing down the street toward his house with coffee in hand, towards us, like it was just another day. She saw us, my brother and I, with sick, sad expressions on our faces and knew something was up. She thought that she was going to cheer him up!

But, it was Ruth who was with us to almost the end. He was grateful, I’m sure.

——-

On a lighter note, Ruth! What a beautiful young woman! She should be a model, shouldn’t she? I bet you could hire her!

I promised her that I’d spend some time with her and photograph her. My dad used to remark on how white the whites of her eyes are and her teeth! For sure, these are not brightened in any way! She wanted to be serious but I love the images where she just sparkles. Beautiful girl. I hope these images help her with a few modeling gigs.

Enjoy!

I started collecting the images of my seniors interacting with Riley over the past two years. I would dump them in a folder after a session and then forget about them. Tonight, I opened the folder and couldn’t stop laughing. This girl gets some serious attention! The kids do love her. As a matter of fact, one day a few weeks ago when I went to photograph the musical groups for the yearbook at Wayland High School, I was doing my ’1-2 3′ thing and the kids yelled out ‘RILEY!’ (instead of ‘cheese’.) I looked at them and laughed and said, ‘did you just say Riley in unison?’ They did and it was so cute. Anyway, here’s a glimpse of how this little pup makes everyone happy…

and now I just want to go play with a stick…. see ya.

It started out sunny when the girls arrived. As they opened the doors, Riley jumped into the car and grabbed something dark brown. “what is it?” I asked (loudly). It was a brownie! Damn! Riley kept running away from us as we tried to get it from her. Back and forth across the yard for what seemed like a half and hour. Senior session or Riley? Well, Riley comes first… but you knew that!

We tricked her with the promise of a cookie and the brownie went down the disposal. Sorry kids! Melissa got ready and we went outside and it began to pour. I felt horrible that Riley had wasted all that time with the brownie and Melissa and Merry looked so cute…

so we went up to the studio. We turned on the fan and Melissa’s hair was going haywire, but it looked great.

Merry jumped in…

and then I got this…

Where was Riley? Eating Merry’s flip flops. Maybe I didn’t feed her enough today?

By the time we got outside, the sun was out and we continued the session. This was by far one of the most fun sessions I’ve had with two delightful Lincoln/Sudbury sisters. They were fun, energetic and very flexible! Thank you girls!

I remember so well the first time I met him. He was walking up the driveway as a sophmore and his intent was to sell me an ad for the high school website. I was interested in purchasing an ad and when he finished with his sales pitch, I was hooked and thrilled to say yes to this fresh faced young man. And now, he’s a senior. It seems like yesterday when I first met him. I wish him well!

Neither of us slept for the 48 hours after my dad made peace with his decision to stop taking the insulin that had kept him alive for 73 years. He was one of the longest surviving diabetics in the world. Mark and I had fought hard to keep him happy and well taken care of for the past year and a half with 24 hour care in his home. He never wanted to go to a nursing home or to a hospital at the end of his life and we kept that promise to him.

I wrote his obituary and for some reason, I find it comforting to read. It will give a little glimpse of who he was.

WOLBARST, Irwin H. Of Quincy. Peacefully entered into rest September 20, 2011 at the age of 89 due to complications of diabetes. Devoted and loving father of Mark Wolbarst and his wife Lynn of Sharon, Stephen Wolbarst and his wife Sherry of FL and Janet Wolbarst of Wayland. Cherished grandfather of David, Amy, Joshua, Adam Wolbarst, Jonah and Lisa Bamel. Irwin was a courageous man who, at age 16 was diagnosed with Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes. He graduated early from Roxbury Memorial HS at age 16 and studied to become a Radio Engineer. He worked at Channel 5 in Boston.
I’m writing to let you know that my dad’s health is declining rapidly. I am staying with him until the end. I’m not the one in control, but it may be a day or two. We knew this was eventually going to happen, but I did not think it would be right now. It’s his choice, he’s an 89 year old Type 1 diabetic (since he was 16), and he’s made his decision to stop taking insulin. He’s sleeping mostly, not eating, drinking water still, on morphine and resting somewhat comfortably.

I will not be processing orders, although please feel free to send emails with your orders, I will get to them as soon as possible. I will try to call you back as soon as possible, but as I have only been home for a few minutes to check mail, email and to write this post, there are a lot of you who have questions and want to schedule sessions and review sessions.

I’m asking for your patience, I’ll be up and running asap, will answer your questions and be back shooting. Feel free to call me if you haven’t heard from me. (just not today or tomorrow… )

If you are reading this and you have a friend who has said they have a session scheduled, please let them know what is happening, in case they haven’t read this post.

Thank you ~

While you are here browsing around, there are still many session times available. October is quite open for all of you last minute kids at Wayland and we can work right up to the last minute as long as you are good with making decisions within a short time frame. It’s best to call me (rather than email) for the session times you desire, as the calendar is not quite up to date (as of this writing).

Lincoln/Sudbury students: your deadline is later than Wayland’s, so it’s time to call and get your session scheduled. Enjoy the gorgeous fall light in the afternoon and take advantage of it! It’s definitely not too late.

Little Ones: Parents, If the morning works for you, now is a great time to get your shots of your precious little ones for your holiday cards. I’m available to come to your home or you can come here. Whatever works best for you! Casual and authentic portraiture… the time is now! Grab those precious fall moments and schedule your sessions now for the fun fall light.

Call now. Limited availability… 508-358-6173

I mention to the kids that ‘texture’ is important. Scarves, or folds, pleats, smocking and layers in their clothing will make for a much more interesting composition, plus it give you something to play with. Apparently, it works! Great job Caitlyn!
