Companies generally prefer to bring in ranks of lawyers and bankers to scrutinize a deal before proceeding, a process that can eat up days or weeks. Mr. Zuckerberg ditched all that. By the time Facebook’s board was brought in, the deal was all but done. The board, according to one person familiar with the matter, “Was told, not consulted.”

Co se mi na Facebooku líbí, je, že se Zuckerbergovi podařilo udržet si rozhodující slovo. To samo o sobě o něčem svědčí. Mark má určitě svou vizi, co chce s Facebookem udělat. Věřím, že to nebude tak špatný. I po uvedení akcií bude mít rozhodující slovo, takže se nebude muset tak moc zodpovídat akcionářům. Určitě ne, pokud akcie dostatečně porostou.

The ensuing tale, the saga of the modern Apple, is simply the story of the man who emerged from that 11-year business school and implemented the lessons he had learned along the way. As was true when he started at Pixar and NeXT, Jobs had many of the details wrong when he first returned to the Apple helm. He imagined that the company’s business would always be selling computers. He thought that what was then called the „information highway“ would be primarily of interest to businesses. He dismissed the idea that computer networks would carry lots of video.

But some of the tougher years at NeXT and Pixar had taught him how to stretch a company’s finances, which helped him ride out his first couple of years back, when Apple was still reliant on a weak jumble of offerings. With newfound discipline, he quickly streamlined the company’s product lines. And just as he had at Pixar, he aligned the company behind those projects. In a way that had never been done before at a technology company–but that looked a lot like an animation studio bent on delivering one great movie a year–Jobs created the organizational strength to deliver one hit after another, each an extension of Apple’s position as the consumer’s digital hub, each as strong as its predecessor. If there’s anything that parallels Apple’s decade-long string of hits–iMac, PowerBook, iPod, iTunes, iPhone, iPad, to list just the blockbusters–it’s Pixar’s string of winners, including Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, WALL-E, and Up. These insanely great products could have come only from insanely great companies, and that’s what Jobs had learned to build.

Myslím, že hezky vystihuje problém, který mají často umělecky založení grafici při návrhu designu webů a aplikací. Samozřejmě se obě oblasti místy prolínají, ale rozhodně ne tolik, jak by se mohlo zdát.

Hezky to rezonuje s myšlenkou, kterou jsem zaslechl v jedné epizodě Critical Path, bylo to nějak takhle: Hodně lidí se dívá na Apple jako na výjimku. Jejich úspěch, ale hlavně fungování firmy, její přístup k byznysu od strategie, až po marketing, je jejich unikátní kombinace. Opak je pravdou. Apple je nový normál. Ukazuje, jak budou muset nastavit své podnikání všichni, pokud budou chtít přežít.

Dobré shrnutí teoretického přístupu a zajímavé nahlédnutí do procesu budování interakčního modelu pro rozsáhlou aplikaci ve velké firmě (HP).

Popisovaná aplikace — jakýsi cestovní portál, který má „transform the future of travel”, ehm — byla komplikovaná v tom, že potřebovali pokrýt více uživatelů s naprosto jinými cíli a tedy jinými interakčními modely. Vlastně je to jako navrhovat několik aplikací a ještě střechu nad nimi.

Pokud máte malý projekt, může vám dobře k zachycení interakcí posloužit třeba i jednoduchá technika, protože ten vysoko-úrovňový pohled se dá shrnout třeba do toho, že „zákazník potřebuje vystavit fakturu”. Každopádně i tak potřebujete tuhle oblast promyslet.

Autor je malinko jetej v „corporate speaku”, takže to si musíte přefiltrovat, ale za přečtení rozhodně stojí.

Deciding what to do

I try to lead every decision with user experience. What is the user-facing situation we want to change? Or if the motivation isn’t because of a user benefit, but a pure business reason — what is the impact on the user, and how can we align incentives so this at minimum makes sense to the user? This is critical.

The other thing is … often in software the thing we think we want to do isn’t actually the right thing. We have to imagine what we want, or stakeholders imagine what they want, and then it all sounds good — until you actually build it and try it. So it is critical to be skeptical of your own ideas and lead with design. Mock ups, stub prototypes, etc, that give you some first-hand experience of what it’s like to use the new thing.

The Google I was passionate about was a technology company that empowered its employees to innovate. The Google I left was an advertising company with a single corporate-mandated focus.

Technically I suppose Google has always been an advertising company, but for the better part of the last three years, it didn’t feel like one. Google was an ad company only in the sense that a good TV show is an ad company: having great content attracts advertisers.

A zase jsme u toho, na co v posledních týdnech narážím často. Firma zapomene, kdo jsou její skuteční klienti.

Kdo jsou klienti Googlu? Prakticky všechny příjmy mají z reklamy, znamená to, že klienti jsou zadavatelé reklam? Pokud přistoupíte na tohle, pak začnete hledat víc informací, které se hodí zadavatelům reklam. Nastavíte vnitřní chod, metriky, odměňování tak, aby podporovalo cíle zadavatelů reklam.

A zjistíte, že nejlepší způsob, jak toho o lidech hodně zjistit, už vymyslel Facebook a začnete zkoušet dostat do svých produktů kýžené „sociálno”.

As it turned out, sharing was not broken. Sharing was working fine and dandy, Google just wasn’t part of it. People were sharing all around us and seemed quite happy. A user exodus from Facebook never materialized. I couldn’t even get my own teenage daughter to look at Google+ twice, “social isn’t a product,” she told me after I gave her a demo, “social is people and the people are on Facebook.” Google was the rich kid who, after having discovered he wasn’t invited to the party, built his own party in retaliation. The fact that no one came to Google’s party became the elephant in the room.

The old Google made a fortune on ads because they had good content. It was like TV used to be: make the best show and you get the most ad revenue from commercials. The new Google seems more focused on the commercials themselves.

Some suggest that Apple is an anomaly and does not reflect the economy. To truly understand the state of the economy, they say, means to subtract Apple from it. But I feel this is exactly wrong. Apple is, through the iPhone and iOS ecosystems, defining this era. Just like Microsoft defined an era of increased productivity through the creation of the “knowledge worker”, or like GM re-defined transportation and the notion of the brand in the 50′s, or like IBM re-defined business process efficiency with automation in the 60′s and 70′s, these companies were not anomalies of their era. They were the eras. They were the locomotives of growth that taught other companies how to operate and the contemporary managers how to manage.

Companies that study Apple today will benefit by understanding how it re-wrote the rules. The anomaly is the norm. The exception is the rule. The times they are indeed a-changin’.

But to consider the legacy of Bell Labs is to see that we should not mistake small technological steps for huge technological leaps. It also shows us that to always “move fast and break things,” as Facebook is apparently doing, or to constantly pursue “a gospel of speed” (as Google has described its philosophy) is not the only way to get where we are going. Perhaps it is not even the best way. Revolutions happen fast but dawn slowly. To a large extent, we’re still benefiting from risks that were taken, and research that was financed, more than a half century ago.

Good writing is not a natural gift. You have to learn to write well. Here are 10 hints:

1. Read the Roman-Raphaelson book on writing. Read it three times.
2. Write the way you talk. Naturally.
3. Use short words, short sentences and short paragraphs.
4. Never use jargon words like reconceptualize, demassification, attitudinally, judgmentally. They are hallmarks of a pretentious ass.
5. Never write more than two pages on any subject.
6. Check your quotations.
7. Never send a letter or a memo on the day you write it. Read it aloud the next morning — and then edit it.
8. If it is something important, get a colleague to improve it.
9. Before you send your letter or your memo, make sure it is crystal clear what you want the recipient to do.
10. If you want ACTION, don’t write. Go and tell the guy what you want.

That doesn’t mean Microsoft (and Amazon, and everyone else) should copy Apple’s iPad strategy as closely as possible. But it certainly shows that Apple not only does not “need” to follow Microsoft’s or Amazon’s strategies, but that they shouldn’t. The iPad was not designed to be all things for all people. How much better would the iPad need to be selling to convince these pundits that Apple nailed it, that they struck gold with the iPad’s concept and execution? There may well be gold in other spots on the tablet frontier, but Apple is going to keep digging in the same spot.
