Set partly in Vietnam and partly in California, it features a mother’s matchmaking efforts to find her son a suitable bride. Her prayers seem to be answered when she stumbles across Esme Tran, a mixed-race woman living in the slums of Ho Chi Minh City.

There are only a few obstacles to her plan.

Esme is a single mother and horrifically ashamed of her lower class status. And Khai Diep has no desire for a wife, much less a child. After all, he is on the autism spectrum and incapable of emotion, which would make him a lousy partner and father.

Hoang’s world is one of close relationships and underlying sweetness. (I’m not referring to the sensuality here; there are onscreen sex scenes and some cursing throughout the novel.) Rather, most of the obstacles to the romance come from internal conflict, so we get to enjoy two nice people finding their way to one another without being distracted by villains or true antagonists. And their ethnicity adds a unique flavor to a matchmaker romance, which happens to be one of my favorite tropes.

What? Were they European now?

But her indignation vanished at the sight of him. He stood with hands fisted at his sides, mute, lust-ridden, looking every bit as miserable as she felt. And she still had at least another four minutes on the clock.
