June 2017 will mark the 50th anniversary of 1967’s Six Day War, a watershed moment in the history of modern Israel. In recognition of the anniversary, Janson Media today announced the re-release of the made-for-television movie, The Impossible Spy. The HBO/BBC drama tells the true story of an Israeli civilian who was recruited into Israel’s Secret Intelligence Agency to become a spy in Damascus, where he spent years infiltrating the Syrian political establishment. Israel’s national hero, Eli Cohen, successfully entered the upper echelons of the Syrian government as a double-agent. The secrets he obtained became crucial in Israel’s victory in the 1967 Six-Day War. A portrait of spies and spying that is as chilling as it is compelling, and as riveting as any James Bond adventure. The legendary Elie Cohen was persuaded to become a secret agent and ended up leading a double life — as a mild-mannered husband and father in Israel, and as a wealthy businessman who infiltrated the highest levels of the Syrian government. Incredibly, Cohen was so successful that he was nominated to be the Defense Minister of Syria. The story begins in 1959. Cohen was a family man leading a quiet, normal life working as an accountant in Tel Aviv when at the age of 35 he was recruited by Israel’s Mossad secret service and assigned a mission that would forever change his life, and the history of Israel.

Today Cohen is regarded in Israel as a legend and national hero. John Shea (Missing, Baby M, Ladykiller, The New Adventures of Superman) delivers a riveting performance as the daring double-agent whose mission took him from Argentina, where he established a new identity as a wealthy Syrian businessman, to Damascus. Risking his life at every turn, Cohen’s guile and fluency in Arabic enabled him to climb to the upper echelons of the Syrian government and gain access to the most vital secrets of their military machine. Incredibly successful, he was nominated to be the Defense Minister of Syria. Eli Wallach (Baby Doll, The Magnificent Seven, Tough Guys) co-stars as the head of the Mossad in this explosive account of intrigue and espionage in the volatile Middle East.

The Impossible Spy was a co-production of HBO in the USA and the BBC in the United Kingdom, and was first broadcast in 1987. The movie was recognized with five ACE Award nominations. The film was produced by Graham Massey and David Goldstein, and directed by Jim Goddard, with a screenplay written by Marty Ross. Harvey Chertok was the film’s executive producer.

Today’s announcement also marks the new discovery and internet release by Syrian rebels of never-before-seen film footage of the execution of Eli Cohen. Cohen’s body has been sought by the government of Israel for over five decades. The story made headlines in Israel, where Cohen is revered as a national hero, and often referred to as “our man in Damascus.” The footage had been filmed by official Syrian government television in 1965. The government of Syrian today continues to keep Cohen’s burial site a state secret.

“The Impossible Spy is a first-rate film that is genuinely based on truth,” wrote film reviewer Leonard Maltin. “It’s a story that no one could make up. John Shea stars as Eli Cohen, Israel’s real-life James Bond who had amazing success spying in Syria in the 1960s which helped Israel win the June 1967 Six-Day War. And, Eli Wallach co-stars as the Head of Israel’s intelligence agency. This is a suspense-filled drama that figures so importantly in the history of Israel.”

“A marvelous film told in the grand tradition of a John Le Carre novel. Shea is simply terrific in the role of Eli Cohen. This is a top-notch thriller made all the more so by its factual basis,” said the Chicago Sun-Times The New York Times called it “a portrait of spies and spying that is as chilling as it is compelling.” The Wall Street Journal said “not every true story makes a movie as riveting as this one.”

The Impossible Spy is available on DVD, and can now be streamed and downloaded from Amazon Video platforms in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Germany. Janson Media is in discussions with the BBC, several American pay-cable networks and television channels in Israel about a 50th anniversary broadcast of the film in June of 2017.

Janson Media today announced the release of Live at 9:30 to U.S. public television stations nationwide. The new twelve-hour series is a modern variety show highlighting the diverse talent that passes through the venue Rolling Stone and Billboard magazines have repeatedly honored as “the best live music club” in the USA.

Each one-hour episode will be a whirlwind of music discovery, featuring performances by hot, new acts and legendary favorites. Much more than a performance show, the program will also feature documentary segments that will delve into compelling stories about the artists, comedians reflecting on music, and short films commissioned from award-winning documentarians and journalists. Regular contributors include NPR’s Bob Boilen (host of All Songs Considered), comedian Hannibal Buress, Bravo’s Jill Kargman, Henry Rollins and special surprise guests. The production team includes art direction by Wayne White, creator of Pee Wee’s Playhouse, and the series being edited at Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video.

U.S. public television has a proud history of airing incredible live music programs, from In Performance at the White House to Austin City Limits. It’s a genre no one does better, and now there is a new player in that space, bringing to viewers a show the likes of which has never been seen before on public television. Designed to bring the coveted 18–35 demographic to public television, Live at 9:30 is put together with help from some of the biggest names in music, including NPR Music, the world famous 9:30 Club, and an unmatched bench of musical, comedic and filmmaking talent. Cinematically filmed and directed with the most high-tech equipment on the market—with some shows being covered by up to 20 cameras, including a “first of its kind” cable-cam — Live at 9:30 is innovative, groundbreaking, visually stunning and full of a “who’s who” in popular music and comedy. It’s a modern day variety show, assembled by an all-star cast, and featuring world class talent. Consisting mostly of exciting performance footage and a peek behind the curtain at the nation’s best music venue, Live at 9:30 is a modern mix of Later With Jools Holland and Austin City Limits, and promises to be a show unlike any other: energetic, innovative, eclectic and passionate.

“We think the show is the perfect program to capitalize on both the younger viewers drawn to public television shows like Downton Abbey and Sherlock, as well as the NPR Music audience, and to play well with existing music programs such as Artist’s Den and Soundstage,” said producer Michael Holstein. “While this is definitely not your mother’s PBS, it’s also a natural progression in the incredible arts programming the system has made available to loyal viewers and supporters.”

“We know this is something very different for public television, but we think that forward-thinking content executives will want to try it in their schedules,” said Stephen Janson of Janson Media. “After all, public television belongs to America’s millennial generation too.”

The first three episodes of Season One of Live at 9:30 kick off with a diverse powerhouse group of artists, including: Garbage, Ibeyi, Misterwives, El Vy, Leon Bridges, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Frank Turner, MSMR, Tove Lo, Cold War Kids, Youth Lagoon and Jess Glynne. Additional artists confirmed for Season One include: The Arcs, Vance Joy, X-Ambassadors, Grace Potter, Alessia Cara, Shakey Graves, Ani DiFranco, Mike Snow, Troye Sivan, Kurt Vile, Melanie Martinez, The Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Ben Harper, Grace Potter, The English Beat and more.

“We want something for everybody,” said Holstein. “Maybe you’ll tune in because you love Garbage, and you’ll discover Ibeyi.”

Satellite feeds begin in late May and station airings are expected to commence in early June, running for six weeks. Six additional episodes will become available to public television stations in September of this year. For more information visit the official Live at 9:30 website, designed by Squarespace, the title sponsor of the series.
Janson Media today announced that it has partnered with the live-streaming video platform Twitch.tv to curate content for its new vertical, a channel dedicated to food and cooking. The channel launched with a four-day live-streaming marathon of the classic public television cooking show, The French Chef, starring the inimitable Julia Child. The show was produced from 1963 to 1973 by Boston’s WGBH-TV for the National Educational Network, the precursor to PBS.

To mark the day Julia Child graduated from the Cordon Bleu Cooking School in Paris (65 years ago, in 1951), Twitch.tv began live-streaming all 201 episodes of the show at 2:00pm PT on Wednesday, March 15th. Twitch is the world’s leading social video platform and community for gamers, with 100 million unique users and over 20 billion minutes viewed per month. The company chose The French Chef to mark its launch of its new channel. As it did last Fall with the launch of the Bob Ross channel on Twitch, Twitch asked Janson Media to help them secure the rights to the classic television show. Janson turned to their good friends at PBS to make it happen.

Janson Media today announced it has licensed the documentary When Elephants Fight, narrated and executive produced by Golden Globe winner Robin Wright (House of Cards), to the U.S. cable network Pivot. This eye-opening film spotlights the illicit mineral trade in the Democratic Republic of Congo and shows how global tech corporations’ complicity has affected the continued conflict in the region. The award-winning documentary makes its U.S. premiere on Pivot, March 16th at 7 pm ET.

“We are proud that this film shines a light on the illegal and illicit mining practices in the Congo,” states Ms. Wright.

“We couldn’t be happier that the film and the #StandWithCongo campaign is reaching a broad and socially conscious and active audience at Pivot.”

The Democratic Republic of Congo is home to some of the world’s richest seams of copper, coltan and other minerals increasingly sought after by global electronics manufacturers for use in smartphones and computers. However, like other resource rich countries in Africa, rather than improving life for the Congolese’s poorest people, billions of dollars are redirected to tax havens and to local militias. This illegal trade has fueled a war that has taken nearly five million lives since 1996.

The film is an extension of the #StandwithCongo campaign which mobilizes students and consumer activists to pressure policy makers, stakeholders, and investors for greater transparency and accountability in the mining sector of the Democratic Republic of Congo. To take action, viewers can follow #StandwithCongo on social media and text CONGO to 77177. The campaign is led by actress Robin Wright, activist JD Stier of Stier Forward, and director Mike Ramsdell.

When Elephants Fight is directed by Ramsdell and executive produced by Wright. Janson Media handles worldwide distribution to all television, VOD and digital markets.

Janson Media today announced a distribution agreement with TM Books & Video, of Michigan City, Indiana. The agreement encompasses digital platform rights, including Amazon Video, Netflix, Hulu, and other major digital platforms.

TM Books & Video has been producing film and videos for almost 50 years. They are licensed by such iconic American manufacturing brands as Caterpillar, Ford, John Deere, Boeing, Case IH, and Lionel Trains to produce educational shows that can be enjoyed by the entire family. TM shows have been on network television, PBS, and cable stations around the country. The RFD cable network currently airs a weekly TM show on the model train hobby. TM’s 16-part flagship series, I Love Toy Trains, has sold over three million home-video copies. Last year, TM produced Ford’s commemorative show on Mustang’s 50th Anniversary and is currently working on the story of Ford trucks.

“Each show is different,” says TM producer Tom McComas. “You have to combine picture, script, interviews, music and effects in a way people will want to buy. That’s a big challenge and we love it. “We spent a year trying to decide which aggregator to sign with. Many were pursuing us. Then Jesse from Janson Media called. He explained how things would work and for the first time, I understood and believed. So we signed with Janson Media. That was a year ago and it has turned out to be an excellent decision. Communication and advice have been excellent and returns are increasing as we send more titles. Signing with Janson is the key to our future in this new, murky world of downloading, streaming, and working with various platforms. Janson has been superb in every facet. I highly recommend them to any producer wanting to expand his or her reach.”

Janson Media today announced the release of the new documentary feature film, The Irish Pub (1 x 72′) to digital markets worldwide.

The Irish Pub, produced by Dublin-based Atom Films, is a celebration of one of the greatest institutions in Irish society. More specifically, it is a celebration of the traditional Irish publicans who own and run these centers of Irish life. Their stories tell of days gone by. Stories of The Famine, of religious persecution, and of cultural enrichment — stories that all seem to have started… and ended… in the pub. The characters in this exceptionally endearing film all run and own pubs that have been in their families for generations. It is through their warmth, wit and wisdom that we gain an insight into the heart and soul of the Irish people themselves.

Janson Media has acquired digital platform rights to The Irish Pub, for the United States and all English-speaking markets worldwide.

“The Irish Pub, a lovingly laid-back documentary about the charms, liquid and otherwise, of the traditional Irish watering hole.” – The Washington Post

“Alex Fegan’s film The Irish Pub is an atmospheric, almost elegiac homage to traditional bars from Dingle to Donegal.” – Irish Times

“If you love Ireland or if you love pubs, and I’m guessing that covers just about everyone, you’re going to want to see Alex Fegan’s disarmingly modest documentary, The Irish Pub. – The Boston Herald

“The Irish Pub plays like a portfolio of lovely postcards, with splendidly photographed pictures of quaint buildings, cobbled streets, breathtaking landscapes, and smiling faces as hollowed and worn as the centuries-old stone floors of the title taverns.” – The Boston Globe

Read more about The Irish Pub on the film’s official website, where fans can also check the schedule for screenings in theaters around the country.

Janson Media today announced the release of Red Dot on the Ocean to worldwide, digital, and VOD markets. The feature-length documentary film is about one man’s death-defying attempt to be the first person to sail alone and nonstop around North and South America. Matt Rutherford, once labeled an “at-risk youth”, had a childhood fraught with obstacles. Growing up in an obscure Christian cult, he struggled with learning disabilities that made life excruciating at home and at school. Matt spent more of his early teens on the streets than in school. Sitting in a jail cell at 17, he had an epiphany and began to turn his life around. Rutherford bought his first sailboat sight unseen on the Internet and learned to sail on the fly. Four years later, he embarked on a single-handed voyage from the USA to Europe, West Africa and back across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. He had found his calling. Professional sailors called him crazy and declared the journey “a suicide mission.” Braving the icebergs of the Arctic and the stormy seas of Cape Horn is no easy feat for even the most experienced sailor, much less a novice.

Red Dot on the Ocean is full of surprises. It is beyond inspiring, a film that makes us all feel we can do and endure more than we imagine.

“An inspiring tale,” wrote Frank Scheck for the Hollywood Reporter.

Ben Kenigsberg of the New York Times said that it “plays like an upbeat, real-life “All Is Lost.””
