A hapless criminal attempted to rob a convenience store in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, by threatening the clerk with a knife, but he was unprepared for the response he received.

The story trended online as netizens admired the clerk’s attitude and poked fun at the flustered would-be robber.

Man With Knife Says “Hand Over The Money” But Backs Off When Store Clerk Asks “Why?”

At around 11:35pm on May 19, a man thrust a knife towards a part-time male store clerk (36), and threatened him, saying “Hand over the money!” at a convenience store in Iitomicho, Mito City.

When the clerk replied “Why?”, the man left the store without taking anything. Neither the store clerk nor a male customer, also present, were injured. The Mito division of the Ibaraki Prefectural Police are investigating the incident as an attempted robbery.

According to an announcement by the police, the man looked to be approximately 30 years old, and around 170 cm tall [approx. 5ft 6in]. He hid his face with sunglasses and a white mask, and wore a black parka with the hood up.

Netizens say goodbye to much-loved snack, “Potato Snack”.

No one could have predicted the response when the announcement came that the company that makes “Potato Snack”, a cheap snack of the kind that children often spend their pocket money on, would stop producing the snacks at the end of July.

Different versions of the story quickly took up the top ranks for the most popular stories on the web in May, as netizens expressed their shock and reminisced about a snack that had been an integral part of their childhood.

It has been revealed that “Potato Snack”, loved as a classic children’s snack, will stop being sold at the end of June, 2013.

Potato Snack first went on sale in 1988, made from a lightly fried potato batter with flavours like “steak” and “fried chicken”. They were priced cheaply at 30 yen [30 cents] for 4 snacks, and were loved by many children along with “Potato Fries” (manufactured by Toho Seika, first sold in 1980. * Sales currently suspended), which were based on a similar concept.

However, from around April 2013, rumours that sales of Potato Snack would cease began to circulate online through information from small retailers. The information was confirmed by Izumi Seika on May 13, 2013, in an interview with J-CAST news.

“It’s true that we will cease sales. On June 30, we will withdraw from the snack business. There has been a steep rise in the cost of ingredients, and this does not match our profits…”

At this news, there were floods of sad voices on Twitter and other SNS sites from the people who had long loved Potato Snack.

“Thanks for everything, Potato Snack. It would be no exaggeration to say that my body was made by Potato Snacks.

“It’s just too big a shock that Potato Snack will be no more…I’m going to find some…”

Even this reporter went around 3 different convenience stores in the neighbourhood, in search of the last remnants, but perhaps because there were already stock shortages, I couldn’t get my hands on any.

Ototake Hirotada is a best-selling author, former sports journalist, and school teacher. When gossip magazine News Post Seven published an article about the bad behaviour of Chinese men in Japanese hostess clubs, it quickly became the most read magazine article on Yahoo! Japan.

As tweets about the article poured in, while some reactions showed anti-Chinese sentiment, many of the tweets pointed out that this was more to do with sudden wealth than nationality, and that the men’s behaviour in the hostess clubs was reminiscent of how some Japanese tourists had behaved abroad during the bubble economy.

Recently the number of Chinese tourists who visit Japanese red-light districts and behave outrageously has increased, as has the trouble in hostess clubs. A hostess from a club in Shinjuku, Tokyo, tells us more, with a stunned expression on her face.

“An older Chinese man came to the club alone, suddenly took my hand and tried to lead me outside. When I refused, he said ‘How much?’, and took out his wallet. Though I explained to him that it wasn’t that kind of club, he just didn’t get it”.

This may be because it’s OK to take home just about any of the girls in “KTVs”, which are hostess clubs in China. Therefore, a lot of Chinese men misunderstand the situation.

Chinese men don’t care whether or not the girl is reluctant, and they’ll touch their bodies regardless. To them it’s quite reasonable to put their hands inside a hostess’ dress, touch her breasts and her lower half, or kiss her against her will. Another hostess tells us about this kind of experience.

“A group of 3 Chinese customers took up a VIP room, and scattered a lot of 10,000 yen notes on the floor. Then, they said “Get naked, and if you can pick one of these ten thousand yen notes up between your butt cheeks, you can take it home with you”. Several of the hostesses were angered by this and they left, but still the manager told us “Just try and put up with it”, so some of us stayed and participated. And of course we were glad that they paid for more than 4 bottles of Dom Perignon in the space of 2 hours.”

Apparently this is a game played by the wealthy in Chinese KTVs; however in Japan it is a nuisance. But that night, it didn’t end there. Letting their money do the talking, the men took some hostesses back to a high-class hotel in Tokyo. Then, while there they custom-ordered “nyotaimori” [eating sushi from a naked woman's body], and banqueted on sushi and sashimi.

The sex industry is a necessary evil, and that’s why the police overlook it too.
Comfort women are not the problem, they’re a way of regulating it.
Even if they were sold by their parents, for the women themselves it must have been really shocking and they were coerced into it, they didn’t give their consent.
Still, those regulating it had bought the women, and at the time, when human rights were not recognised as they are today, there was probably very little the women could do about it.
