Dubois took the seat behind his colleagues and for a while was as perplexed as they were. It was pitch black outside, warning lights were flashing and some of the screens were blank. The men in front partially blocked his view and evidently he did not take much notice of a horizon indicator, which must have shown the plane was still being held nose up. The Airbus was soon falling through the night at 11,000 feet per minute, twice as fast as its forward travel. Only 45 seconds before impact Bonin blurted out that he had been trying to climb throughout the emergency, giving his colleagues the first indication of what had been going wrong. There is one final, dramatic exchange:

02:13:40 (Robert) “Climb… climb… climb… climb…”
02:13:40 (Bonin) “But I’ve had the stick back the whole time!”
02:13:42 (Dubois) “No, no, no… Don’t climb… no, no.”
02:13:43 (Robert) “Descend… Give me the controls… Give me the controls!”

Robert takes control and finally lowers the nose, but at that moment a new hazard warning sounds, telling them the surface of the sea is fast approaching. Robert realises the ghastly truth – that he hasn’t enough height to dive to pick up speed. The flight is doomed.

02:14:23 (Robert) “Damn it, we’re going to crash… This can’t be happening!”
02:14:25 (Bonin) “But what’s going on?”

The captain, now acutely aware of the aircraft’s pitch, has the final word:

02:14:27 (Dubois) “Ten degrees of pitch…”

There the recording ends.

Although a frightening account of a major air disaster, flying remains the safest form of travel, even if humans are incapable of accurately perceiving the true risks of flight.

What we currently call breast cancer should be thought of as 10 completely separate diseases, according to an international study which has been described as a “landmark”.

Any forward progress on our medical professionals being able to accurately treat breast cancer should be considered nothing short of positive. This is exciting news.

A 50-year-old man who said he felt that airport screeners were “harassing” him stripped naked at Portland International Airport, police in Oregon said.

Police charged John E. Brennan with disorderly conduct and indecent exposure after he disrobed while going through the security screening area at the airport Tuesday evening.

“When interviewed about his actions, Mr. Brennan stated he fly’s (sic) a lot and had disrobed as a form of protest against TSA screeners who he felt were harassing him,” a police incident report said.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say this was not an effective means of protest.

The reality is that free services can’t run forever without one of those two things happening. In the case of Instagram, the service was bought by a company that offers a free-to-users-but-with-ads service. (It just so happens the service is disliked by many nerds, hence the outcry online.)

Where does iCloud fit in to this? iCloud isn’t backed by piles of VC money, nor is it paid for by ads. Does that mean that it will go away one day?

Surely not, because iCloud is the exception to the rule.

Spot on. iCloud is one of the central parts of Apple’s strategic vision for the next decade.

The attraction of iCloud is how its bundled with iOS and OS X, and how it will be further integrated into future versions of each operating system. iCloud allows Apple customers to easily access and synchronize their cloud-connected devices – Mac’s, iPhone’s, iPad’s, iPod Touch’s, etc. – so customers have access to all the same data regardless of what device they are using. Apple realizes most customers purchase multiple Apple products, and desire easy access to all their data, no matter which device they pickup.

iCloud is part of the Apple experience and what makes Apple devices so exciting to use.

The ability to integrate with social networks, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, to synchronize data is almost a necessity these days. Let your contacts manage their data rather than the old way of having to manually build your own address book. Those cumbersome days should be over.

Certainly, you want to retain a good portion of flexibility – to personalize your address book, the entries, and much of that data – but the legwork should be done by the data owners themselves.
