Duke Riley’s massive public art project “Fly by Night,” with its thousands of pigeons, a naval carrier, and countless LED lights swirling through the air at dusk, was a subject that demanded a unique presentation. Virtual reality video was a perfect fit. I followed the project from its early stages to opening night, giving viewers an appreciation for the work behind the project and dropping them into the middle of the piece.

This 360-degree video accompanied a WSJ. Magazine profile of the project.
Preparing for a runway show at New York Fashion Week is a complicated and intense process. Long days spent designing and sewing clothes give way to even longer nights filled with model castings and fittings.

Designer Jason Wu, best known for making both of Michelle Obama’s inaugural gowns, says some of his favorite pieces come together just two or three days before the show. “That’s where all the magic happens,” he says.

My colleague and style reporter Elizabeth Holmes and I used a 360-degree virtual reality camera to capture Mr. Wu in his New York atelier, showroom and backstage as he prepared his collection—then took a front-row seat as the show unfolded. This story received over 2 million plays on Facebook.

If you’re watching on mobile, this piece is best viewed in the Virtual Reality section of the (free) WSJ app.

To run smoothly, tomorrow’s cities will rely on millions of networked sensors to monitor everything from trash collection to water quality. I co-produced a graphical virtual reality tour of how New York City’s sensors will work in the future. This story was part of WSJ’s 2050: Demographic Destiny series, which won a Society of News Design Gold Medal, and New York Press Club and APME awards, and was selected for exhibition in the Newseum.
