Gina’s Take:
We have an 11-year-old boy. Our prayer for him is simply to become a good man. The other night at dinner when Jason was being silly and refusing to hand me a dish of rice (he wanted to hoard it for himself), our boy stretched himself across the table to pass it to me. Jason scoffed in play anger, “Bud, why’d you give the rice to her?” His response was, “Dad, I was being a gentleman.” Yep. It didn’t matter that he was almost laying on the table at P.F Chang’s, reaching for the rice, because what he said was much more important! As happy as we are that he does great in school, is a talented athlete, is conscientious of the planet, that phrase, “Dad, I was being a gentleman,” made my heart swell with pride.  Aubrey is a gentleman to the core. Throughout the engagement shoot he was so aware of anything Mara might need. He was gracious and kind to Jason and I and respectful to anyone we happened upon. It makes it even better that he has chosen a woman so deserving of his “gentleman-ness”. Mara is so sweet and it was delightful to spend the afternoon with the two of them.

Jason’s Take:
I’m one of those people that doesn’t wind down, or unplug, easily. I truly love working. Whether it be shooting a wedding, updating the blog, or working in the yard, I keep myself quite busy. One of the things I love about Colorado is that you don’t have to go far to feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, enveloped by nature, and free from the daily routines that steel away good, solid down time. Mara and Aubrey’s families BOTH have cabins in Eldora, Colorado. I’ve mentioned it before, and I’ll say it again… one of my passions is to have a cabin in the mountains. Preferably with a fly fishing stream nearby, like Aubrey’s cabin. Heaven.

Gina’s Take:
We’re all busy. It’s just a fact of life. I mean between owning our own business, kids’ activities, dogs, and housework, sometimes I forget to breathe. Meet Lexi & Rusty. On their agenda this year is to finish Medical School (both of them) & plan a killer DIY wedding. Enough said. They give ‘busy’ a whole new meaning! They’re brewing their own beer for the wedding, making unique barley and wheat centerpieces in cut off beer bottles (they’ve been drinking the beer from those bottles for months), oh yeah, and finishing their med school rotations! I’m not sure how they even managed time for their engagement shoot, let alone showing up so relaxed and happy. We cannot wait to see their DIY projects come together and taste a promised microbrew after the wedding.

Jason’s Take:
Yep… they are beer sommeliers. Lexi and Rusty have been added to my list of ‘go-to’ people for recommendations for a good microbrew. I’m the type of person that falls in love with something, then indulges in that one thing until I can’t stand it any more. My current beer of choice (which has stuck with me for a couple of years now) is 90 Shilling from the Odell Brewing Company in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Did you know that, according to the Odell website, the name 90 Shilling comes from the Scottish method of taxing beer? Apparently, only the highest quality beers were taxed 90 Shillings. Awesome. That’s my beer of choice for now. When it grows old to my palate, I’ll track down these two doctors for a good recommendation.

Gina’s Take:
Adventure. Tara and Pieter have both had their share. She’s lived all over the world and, how adorable is this, they met while he was her safari guide in South Africa. Yep, that puts Jason and my “adventures” to shame! They’ve “settled down” in Cape Town, but I’m sure their lives will never be stagnant. Meeting them has rekindled my sense of adventure. They inspire me to be bold. I mean, we’re not going to pick up and move to a different continent (at least not any time soon) but I want to experience as much as I can take in. Lucky for me, my hubby feels the same way.

Jason’s Take:
We found a slice of heaven as we scouted for Tara and Pieter’s mini engagement session. Knowing that they had an incredibly tight schedule while they were in Boulder, we searched for a location that would help their friends and family at home get a feel for what the Colorado (Boulderish) outdoors feels like in early March. Those of us that are natives know that March can be incredibly cold and snowy, or can be 70 degrees and quite warm (I was in shorts – and loving it!). The empty trees and the monotone fields lend feeling to the anticipation for Spring-time color. We visited this area just a couple of days ago – and the transformation has been completed. Gorgeous in March, amazing in April.

Gina’s Take:

Yep. It’s officially engagement session season and, dang, it feels good. Seeing our clients again, having a beer with them, and getting outside to shoot some pictures makes for a pretty fantastic afternoon! Not only do I love being outside shooting, I love being outside period. Although we stay pretty active in the winter snowboarding and running, we are still stuck inside more than I’d like. Spring means gardening, our boy’s baseball games, BBQs with the neighbors (we’ve all dusted off our grills already), and hikes with the pups. The only upside to the lack of snow this ski season here in Colorado is that we will probably get to backpack much earlier this summer! That is worth celebrating.

Jason’s Take:

Kristie and Tyler are both involved in the photography community. Kristie is a photographer and Tyler works for Denver Pro Photo. They scouted out some fantastic spots for our shoot. We began in the (now demolished) attic of Denver Pro Photo. The dust was crazy! In fact, I had to remove one of my contacts during the shoot with all the intense dust. Worth every minute – The lines, light, and architecture was a blast to play in. After the warehouse/attic, they took us to this aged, iconic, white tree in Westminster. We arrived just after sunset. We were all hoping the sun would stay for just a bit longer. We snapped a few shots and decided to revisit the spot on a sun-drenched afternoon. Thus, as you view the images, you’ll see the transition from indoor photos, to outdoor after sunset pics, to absolutely sun-baked pictures! Kristie and Tyler… we can’t wait for your wedding in less than a month!!

Gina’s Take:

Aspen is Dani’s hometown. No matter where her life takes her or how much she’s changed, Aspen stays the same. Don’t we all have a place like that?  It could be your hometown, or your parent’s house, or a decade’s worth of Sunday brunches with your best friends. For me, it’s my kitchen, but more than that it’s making family recipes in my kitchen. Whether I’m making my great grandma’s shortbread (and calling my grandma to ask again how I should know when I’ve put enough flour in), sharing the story behind “Bernie’s wife’s banana bread” with my stepkids, or making my grandpa’s scalloped potatoes thinking of his memory; there  is something magical about those well-worn recipe cards. Maybe it’s my sappy sentiment that made me love shooting Dani and Anthony’s engagement session in a place so rich with memories for them. Even so, I loved it.

Jason’s Take:

Generosity. This is the one word that comes to mind when I think of our time with Dani and Anthony in Aspen for their engagement session. Their kindness, hospitality, and generosity made me feel that they were somehow transplanted into 2012 from a long-lost generation. A generation with the deep belief that an other’s happiness is more important than your own. The afternoon began, as we waited for the sun to drop from the center of the sky, with cheese and crackers and a bottle of the best Pinot I’ve tasted (Williams Selyem 2009 Pinot Noir). Dani and Anthony took us to a couple of spots they had scouted out for photos (Anthony was a professional photographer for years). We finished the shoot wandering around downtown Aspen before they insisted on treating us to Aspen’s best sushi at Matsuhisa Aspen. Generosity, yep that’s the word.

Gina’s Take:
From the time she’s old enough to say the word bride, every girl envisions her wedding day. It’s part of our DNA. Sunny’s vision was a quiet celebration after a week-long snowy retreat with her closest friends and family. She planned on skiing and late-night fireside conversations, wine-infused karaoke and great meals. She never planned to be donning a luscious blush-colored Vera Wang gown and looking effortlessly enchanting. In fact, her original vision had her walking down the aisle in everyday clothing. Nor did she suspect their simple little ceremony would be so emotional for herself and Franco, every guest, and their photographers. There could not have been a better way for Jason and I to start our 2012 wedding season.

Jason’s Take:
I felt incredibly warmed and welcomed, as if old friends, by this amazing group of physicians, artists, and professionals. Gina and I often chat about weddings on our drive back to Denver. We were completely overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of this down-to-earth group of people… and talked about it the entire drive home. We are so grateful for the work we do that allows us to join together with some of the most interesting and wonderful people we could imagine.

Not only did we love them for their kindness and warmth… their officiant (Sunny’s brother) used an iPad for the ceremony, AND Sunny and Franco read their vows from their iPhones. Could two perfect worlds collide in a more beautiful way?

In true form, they loved their images on the iPad.
