Monday, Mr Ganes called. He told me that the Japanese girl which I was supposed to host, Yumi Matsuda, was very shy when she found out that she is going to be hosted by a guy, so adjustments were made. Jin Shuen who took 2 boys had to switch with me and Hoong Min for 2 girls. My new guest will be Hiroki.

The day to meet him finally arrived. Saturday afternoon, mom drove me to Bukit Bintang where their hotel is. The Jap group was already there. Hoong Min, me and Alanna were trying to figure out which of them were ours, until blur me noticed that they had stickers with their names on their shirt. I spotted mine. I called out to Alanna. Her jaw dropped. When I pointed out Hiro among the 3 boys to Maxine, she screamed.

"JingTao ah, you so lucky leh!!"

Even Hoong Min had to omg. I guess, I am quite fortunate to be randomly assigned to what the girls call hottie.

When Mr Ganes called for me and Hiro, we ran into each other and shook hands. Perhaps it was because of all the hype, I was a little excited and I ran off without him to chatter with Alanna. I think that was a very bad first impression for him. I am a bad host. I run away from my foreign guest and leave him confused in the crowd.

The lady from Japan who organised the trip was busy giving out her name card to everyone. She then stepped up to deliver her speech in her broken, croaky voice. Oh yea, you can choose to not go to see the firefries and keep your host with you on Sunday night. Just the news I needed.

I unknowingly offered to carry Hiro's luggage (boy, was it heavy) and without a thought he said yes. With the heavy load we walked to Low Yat Plaza and stopped by to pickup dad's O₂ before going to the car. Once again, I abandoned him aside to do some other business. I think this could have been why he didn't dare talk a lot to me at first. I am a very inhospitable host.

In the car, dad's Frank Mills CD was interfering us. I switched it off and asked him if he wanted to join the fireflies excursion on Sunday night. He didn't seem to understand "five thirty" as time, so I asked for pen and paper to write down 5:30 pm. I should have known better to equip myself with communication necessities. At first he said yes, but I managed to persuade him to not follow the excursion as we could have dinner at home. Besides, we would have more time to tour the city rather than returning to the hotel at 5.30PM to catch the bus, then later returning home at 11PM.

When we got home, I didn't know what to do with him after putting down his luggage. First we sat down and stared at a rough map of KL for about 30 minutes. Then mom suggested I serve him a piece of her tiramisu. I took out some playing cards to suggest some ice-breaking indoor activities - as it was raining. We played both our variations of Speed, until Hiro admitted he was bored when I asked whether he was. Clearly he is so polite that he doesn't dare ask me to stop the game. I introduced him to congkak later on, which he did manage to grasp the concept and strategy quite soon in the game.

For our first meal, we went for Japanese food. Throughout the entire day, I realise that when he eats he shows his most natural behavior. Obviously it is because he was presented with something of familiarity to him. It was only that night I learn that when you eat tempura, you dip it into the cold soup.

We managed to bring him to Petaling street before the stalls were closed. Hiro had his eyes on a couple of wallets, and he sure did take a long time studying each one of them before deciding on buying the first wallet he picked. We also bought for him some dried meat, chicken floss and dodol. When dad asked him to smell an unopened durian he showed some interest, but when he smelled a wrapped piece of the flesh he immediately changed his mind. Our night in the city ended with some supper at a mamak stall near our house. Sadly, roti tisu was sold out and the dough was being kneaded. As Hiro was getting tired, we just went with some naan, chapati and tandoori - all of which he returned positive feedback.

Before diving into bed, Hiro got all of us to come down to the living room and partake in his little prize-giving ceremony. The gifts he brought from home were pretty exotic: a set of 2 teacups, a vase, unagi pie, origami paper, paper beach balls and some magnets. We somehow managed to stay up a little bit more to show each other our photographs. Lights off was at 1:30 AM.

What is that? Allow me to educate you.

That, my friend, is a simple line of command for UNIX operating systems that creates a forkbomb. What is a forkbomb? A forkbomb, is a program (or more specifically, a process)
which creates 2 other processes which in turn create another 2 processes each and so on so forth.

A diagram taken from Wikipedia should clear things up:

You could think of it as a biological cell, which constantly divides through binary fission. 1 becomes 2, 2 become 4, 4 become 8 etc.

Some people regard the above command as mathematical beauty, as such a command which doesn't seem to make any logical sense can actually crash one's computer. Why so? Processes which are running in the computer's memory, well, obviously take up memory. As more and more instances of the process are created, more memory is consumed. Forkbombs "replicate" at such a pace where it is quite impossible to terminate all the processes one by one before the system falls into a state of total lagginess. A reset would be necessary to clear the memory.

A reminder: the command mentioned here applies only for UNIX operating systems which use a shell/command prompt such as bash, like in Linux. Please do not try to fool others into crashing their computers by giving them this command to type - it simply doesn't work in Windows' command prompt.

Now to share with you a personal experience. There was one time when launching Internet Explorer would create a forkbomb, for me, at least. Once I double-clicked the blue e, one IE window would come up, then another, another, and another, until I had to push the reset button. I'm not trying to give the impression that IE is dangerous. I'm just telling you that it has failed for me before, and that was why I made the switch over to Firefox.

Hmm, seems like I've never written reviews about books before. Pfft, there's always the first time for everything. A few months ago Mok lent me this book - A Nicer Way to Die by Sam Mills. Very exciting teenager's thriller - story is about 2 stepbrothers playing mind games with each other in a deserted house.

3 weeks ago I went to Kinokuniya and got The Boys Who Saved The World, Mills' second book. Yesternight I finished reading it (I am a slow reader, forgive me.)

Synopsis:

A group of boys who founded their own religion have kidnapped a girl, whom their leader accused as being a terrorist. Story continues with one of the boys, Jon telling the story from his perspective. Throughout the entire story, there are many questions regarding his faith, and also heart-pounding moments when Jon has to deal with his cold-blooded prophet, Jeremiah who seems to be going against their own rules of religion. Jon later on falls in love with the hostage.

Sadly, the ending of this book is worse than the previous one. The story is left dangling mid-air - leaving me ponder what happened to the villians in the end. Ironically, there are 20 odd blank pages at the end of the book, as though Mills wanted readers to pen down their own ending chapter. The book almost killed me with the dreadful ending, but no matter how, I managed to keep my sanity and will attempt to finish the other book I bought that day.

So is this worth a buy? Maybe not. Still, it was a very exciting book to read.

Another update, after wrestling with the holiday spirits which inevitably possess me and divert my attention from my basic duties of life. First off, new phone! Sony Ericsson K550i, flash with W610i firmware (aka Cybershot-Walkman hybrid, or K550@W610). Teehee Kai Foong, I got your phone for RM300 less... well.. at least the only problem seems to be the tiny speakers.

In general its pretty ok for a phone this cheap, but the Cybershot branding really doesn't add any power to the camera. To be frank it is actually below par compared to my ex-W810i. The speakers are a bit too small too - hisses when it gets too loud, especially with the Mezza ringtone I stole from dad's new O2.

At Hoong Min's house now... Opera is refusing to accept my floating style tags...

Where was I... Oh yes. Tomorrow is Fiona's party... Will try to give complete coverage when I get home tomorrow, hopefully the pictures i snapped with the lousy camera will encourage me to do so.

In case you don't know yet, I have planned to begin a podcast talkshow with a friend from Chile (look it up under South America on your atlas if you don't know where that is). We'll be talking mainly about differences between our two countries, Malaysia and Chile, and occasionally perhaps some tech stuff (you know, typical geek stuff).

I haven't started on holiday homework yet! Got the BM novel to read - Konserto Terakhir - which I haven't even bought the book yet. In the meantime I get more and more addicted to Happyslip videos, MORE than Kevjumba. I'm finding myself unconsciously imitating her lines. Gah, must begin Youtubing soon. I have to say that my blogging technique is so - weird nowadays. I don't know if people who read this green blog cares about that, but I've been feeling quite un-natural blogging this year. Bleh - drop that. As long as I still get about 50 hits per month I'm happy. Gives me one less reason to do a design overhaul. Ahhh....

Everyone's talking about Facebook nowadays!!! The number of invitations which creep into my inbox everyday... aaargh stop it, you're spamming me. C'mon, there's like tons of social networking sites out there already, why do we still need one more? Since I've laid my feet into WMS I've signed up for Friendster, hi5, Bebo, Ringo, Xanga... too many to name. I've practically ditched every networking site except Friendster - with the only reason to let others find me for the sake of adding to their plethora of "friends" on their list. Talk some sense please - do you need a page on the Internet just to tell the whole world that you're friends with me? Come to think about it, I bet 60% of so-called "friends" on your list barely had a dialogue or two with you?

If you people haven't read the papers... Facebook is about to launch a new advertising programme where they study what your friends say to you on their site. By then everyone will be complaining about Facebook being slow like Myspace to access and they'll diss it and flyover to some other emergent social site. Pfft - social sites are for people who are indirectly looking for dates. "Social networking" is just another term for "middle-man based dating", IMO.

Moving on... school mag. The dreaded, green, new concept school mag. Until present I can't even visualise a "real" copy of it - everything is so vague and intangible and scattered into individual pieces which won't fit together easily in the end. Psst... we haven't even standardised the paper size and orientation yet. How bad is that? Not to mention editorial board members who can't be bothered to come to school at the last week to receive some last-minute news and tasks.

Our year is coming to an end with a crash... and so does this badly structured and informatically disorganised entry.

Okay... its typical behaviour now... I do abandon this blog for extended periods. Exams are over, and yet I don't blog as much. Perhaps time to consider deleting this blog. NO! I can't! I've gone too far into this blogging thing, no quitting now... it's too late...

How many things have I not written about actually? The spelling bee... it was quite fun actually. Got into top 3 for 4M/C, but I doubt we won anyways... Sara got first for spelling all 3 final words right. Racing in the semi-finals was fun. Nik was our hand-raiser, competing against Boon Siew the Aggressive. There were many arguments regarding who was faster at snatching for the right to spell, but still, we beat M flat and, yea, got ourselves a few decent points. Yet, L and P are winning like crazy. O o o I played Scrabble with Johann. When I gave a triple-word in to V Vien I was cursing at myself, why why why WHY! And from the blue corner, Lam was laughing at me for being that stupid. That, kindof sums up the post-exam I had.

Supposedly a jam session is to be held in school next Wednesday for us... (Form 4s) but apparently even Mrs Mathews isn't as concerned as we are. One whole week wasted without any practise because Ms Anne was relying on Ms Vicky to talk to dear Mrs Mathews so that we could get a slot during activities to practise. But apparently there seems to be some communication error causing us to waste 6 possible days of practise. Now that there's only 2 more school days left before the show, I highly doubt there is any chance we can practise. This is pure hypocrisy.

When the DVDrip is out I'm gonna download it and watch it again. By the way, did I mention (well of course I have not) that Dreamworks insulted Disney in this movie?

How to make the
perfect, boring post-exam period

Ingredients:

1 educational film
2 rounds of debate, English flavoured;
6 presentations with Points full of Power;
12 repetative recitations of a Bible excerpt;
18 sajaks for declaration;
24 solo & duet acts in two flavours: English and BM;
30 creatively built models;
36 environmentally-aware posters;
180 words to learn to spell; and
lots of balls flying around the entire school

Method:

Take a new domain name (http://wms.edu.my) assign it to your current school website, and create a page for downloading the lists of 180 words.
Select an exciting excerpt from the Bible and assign it to 12 students for recitation.
Make 190 students spell out the above prepared words.
Place students into a bowl, and expose to radiations from a LCD projector for 2 hours.
Throw in sticks, paper, card, PVA glue etc into the container, mix well.
Add some published literary works into the container, and slowly stir with emotion.
Now choose some colors (preferably the three primary colours, red, blue and yellow) and add as appropriate into the bowl.
Dice some chickens and marinate before letting them join the mixture.
Look passionately into the bowl of students, and announce 2 interesting subjects of debate.
Add water balloons, spoons, ping-pong balls, raffea string etc.
Place bowl on a laptop computer, slowly cook the mixture using a high-powered LCD projector.
Remember to sing while cooking.
Serve cold with lots of bouncy balls on a plate.

A new start, a new look

If you don't know what Joost is yet, read this first.

Apart from a total website revamp, Joost has finally released version 1.0 (currently 1.0.1) of its online telivision client. This version is still in beta, but open to public, meaning you don't need an invitation to join and try it out.

The new version brings about a UI overhaul: the Channel Catalogue has been changed to Explore, which is more intuitive to browse for new channels to add to your list.

Content has definitely grown in both number and variety since the Now for Friends edition (which had unlimited invitations) - although our residence in Asia means that a large portion of popular content will still be unaccesible. Nevertheless, Joost is still a source of unusual programming for us, something to complement our astro experience.

Here's a list of my personally favourited channels:

Live @ Much : Interviews with Gwen Stefani, Evanescence, Good Charlotte etc
Reuters : Short clips on showbiz, technology and oddities of the universe
IMF The Worlds Best Music : Music vids from the US and other continents

There are, some minor annoyances. Apparently there is an advertising bug, causing major ad repetition (I've been seeing the Nokia N81 for like 20 times a day). Also, with the presence of the b-word in the name, there is still some possibility of this happening to you:

Still, Joost is a great product to try out. Joost is planning to set up a couple of servers in Hong Kong, which will probably increase viewing experience for the rest of Asia, as for now there are only 3 server centers: Luxembourg, London and LA.

Joost relies on P2P network technology. As such, Joost consumes a large amount of bandwidth. An unlimited usage connection with 1Mbps downlink is recommended, although slower speeds may as well work.

Well since I was just plain too lazy to blog about anything during the exams, guess I'll just have to recap the Darius way.

Last Saturday night, there was actually a man who fell asleep in his car at the traffic light. I wanted to get out of the car and wake him up, but dad insisted I stay. Everyone was honking at him, but he just snored away (probably he's drunk). I was a bit worried anyway - what if his foot is on the brakes now, and when he suddenly wakes up, he let's go and goes backwards? Or if he suddenly stepped on the accelerator? Dangerous. Fortunately this lady came out of her car and woke him up. The man was responsible "enough" to turn on his double signal lights, proabably indicating "I might fall back into sleep again!" to everyone else on the road. Mom drove our car faaar away from him, not wanting anything to befall on us.

Sunday - dinner at Ozeki's. If you don't know where this is, its located at Menara TA, ground floor, about hundred metres beyond Modesto's. The food here is excellent (Japanese and fusion, if you haven't got the picture yet).

The main course was a kimchi-ish stew. The soup is not curry-ish at all (there is Japanese curry but that is not relevant to the context here), rather it tastes spicy and sour, somewhat similar to tom yam. There's tofu, mushrooms, fish, chicken, veggies and all sorts in it. Quite satiating when taken with a bowl of steamed rice.

The sashimi was wonderfully fresh too. A variety of fishes, accompanied by raw beef and scallop. I kindof regret not taking a picture to show you guys here - the arrangement was superb; a work of art indeed. Kobe is available here too - you can choose to barbecue it yourself at the table, but apparently the unusual prices may shock you. Arriving late at home, I couldn't resist the opportunity to camwhore a bit - I don't usually do it because I don't dress up so seriously for a night out. I won't put the pics here - you'll have to do some hunting on your own.

Then came the 2nd lapse of the exams, and poof! It's over now. Cut my knee at futsal today (there is a picture but I doubt you'd wanna see it) I'll be spoiling myself to watching Joost and doing stuff on the living room TV this weekend - parents are going out for 3 days. Will be at Zong Yuan's place for one night next week.

Yup. And now an important public service announcement here:

The lecture theatre PC is infected by a worm. Should you plug your pendrive in, your pendrive will be infected. If you double click on your pendrive icon in My Computer on another PC - that PC will be infected. To dodge the infection, type the alphabet of your pendrive followed by a colon (e.g. G:) in the address bar of My Computer and press Enter. Should your antivirus not detect the worm files, delete these files on your own:

Autorun.inf - hidden
Administrator.exe - appears to be a folder due to its icon - don't be fooled
MySexy.exe - hidden
MySexy.dat - hidden

To make sure that you see all these hidden files, follow the procedure below:

Goto the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
Switch to the View tab.
Select these options:

Show hidden files and folders
Untick - "Hide protected operating system files"

Press OK.

The hidden files will appear to be semi-transparent. Delete them and redo the above procedure in reverse to hide those system files again for your own safety.

P.S. If you accidentally activated the worm, the above steps will not work for you unless you use another PC. The worm (when activated) will try to disable/terminate every security/antivirus/antispyware software known to it.

Today I stumbled upon this Youtube fella kevjumba who apparently is among the most popular comedians on Youtube. His videos look simple, he doesn't look a lot older than me, so I was thinking,

Should I start video-blogging?

Well looking at my current resources list, I only have a Walkman phone that would produce below-decent videos which may cause pain to viewers (if any did exist). I need something a bit more professional, but it doesn't hurt to try. The question is:

Will I be able to cope with updates?

To be honest, I really don't know. As you can see here this blog is frequently neglected no matter what season it is. To have me sitting down in front of a camera and talk for a couple of minutes and spend another couple of hours of editing it - I have no idea what that's gonna be like. I mean, on average I spend 3 hours more than other normal beings to prepare a single Powerpoint presentation. How's that for perfectionism? Maybe I might faint from suffering from looking at the terrible quality picture while editing (eek)

Grade 8 practical results not out yet. Gosh, the longer it takes, the more I get tensed up about failing it. (yes, its awkward, this is my first time going into an exam with my phone switched on). I pray I pray I pray that I'll pass. Yes, I'll pass. Must be positive.

Card reader is next on urgent wishlist. Further waiting of songs to transfer to my phone thru the cable will shorten my life expectancy by 3 years.

Our security experts here at JingTaoisme Corp have identified yet another, annoying, stupid, ridiculous, bugging worm which propogates [yes, that is a beautiful word] thru the popular Windows Live Messenger, also famously known as MSN Messenger. Similar to other past worms, these worms send an attractive looking message to every contact on the host's list, followed by a link to download the worm or a weird looking file.

Messages which we have seen before (and which you may encounter variations):

Is that your mom in that picture?
lol, your mom just sent this picture of you
hey, here are my newly done pics. Check them out!
these are my vacation photos.

These mind-boggling creepy crawlies love to send files which are known to be in the .ZIP format. One may notice that the ludicrously tiny file size of the sent file is contradicting to the aforementioned pictures, which may possibly be of larger file sizes.

Once again, as usual, as the caring corporation overlooking your general computing needs, we request that you raise your awareness towards these pesky little worms that may just worsen your day and others. Imagine someone like JingTao receiving tens (if not, hundreds or even thousands) of those crappy messages per day.

From our studies, we have found out that most of the victims of these nasty bugs are using antivirus software known as Norton Antivirus. As your expert in computer security, we strongly advise against the use of the aforementioned software, as most copies of the software are bundled along by your hardware provider and will expire 2 months after activation. Once expired, automatic updating will simply not work, which explains why most of us are so vulnerable to new threats even though we have super-ability bodyguards around us. Additionally, our tests show that Norton does not scan archive files (.ZIP) upon executing, nor does it scan a file when received thru Windows Live Messenger. Our top-rank security expert strongly recommends that everyone to remove Norton Antivirus from their computer systems, and instead, download and install avast! antivirus Home Edition (which is free, but however requires free email registration to acquire a working license key). To compliment this article, a link has been provided for readers to immediately visit the avast! site and download the software mentioned. We have also ensured that the link is big enough so that it is easy for the reader to notice and click.

If you realise that you have caught one of those worms with you and would like to be a responsible internet neighbour, please consider using Pidgin, another free messenger software which can sign-in to MSN, Yahoo!, ICQ, Google Talk, AIM and several other messaging networks simlutaneously. It is not something common for someone unsporty like me to blog about sports. Still, we are forced to rotate our blogging topics once in a while to attract attention. Of course, the primary reason why we are doing this is simply because we have a couple o'photos to show off too.

Before we begin, we should pay some respect to our own country. However due to licensing restrictions we are unable to place an audio clip of our national anthem here. In order to satisfy this, we require that all readers who proceed beyond this point to immediately stand up, and sing out the lyrics to the national anthem proudly, while looking into the photo of the hibiscus below.

And now, without further a due, presenting our first sports personality, Ving Chiong! Best known for his amazing peeng-pong skills, here we shall see him demonstrate the infamous, "chicken wing" move.

Yes, it does make all of us go chicken, but please do be aware of the potential injuries which may come along due to over-usage of the aforementioned technique.

Moving on, we have our very own autonomous-one-of-a-kind-sub-Wesley football club. We now fly over to the green futsal court for some live coverage.

Due to the sudden arrival of a random-from-who-knows-where tornado, all of our cheerleaders have been suddenly carried away into the Atlantic ocean, spinning at a top speed of 600 mph, however, one was lucky enough to remain on the field:
