Pickens County Sportmans Club – Kids Fishing

Thursday marked more than 20 years celebrating the Fishing Days at Cove Creek by the Pickens County Sportsman’s Club – Fishing Day started Thursday with the release of 2,000 trout into Cove Creek. Fishing was on Thursday for the physically disabled members of the Pickens County community, Friday for our Senior Citizens and Saturday for our kids of Pickens County 15 years or younger which were accompanied by an adult.

Becky Denny – Rally at R & R Trikes

On Saturday, May 12, at R&R Trikes, the First ever Woman Candidate for Pickens County Commissioner, Becky Denney, held a rally for her supporters – to listen to concerns and answer questions and to find out what Becky stands for here in Pickens County. People enjoyed hot dogs and hamburgers, entertainment of music and the Spiderman jump house and much friendship. Becky talked with people and listened to what they had to say.

Super Moon May 5, 2012 Pickens County, GA

The full Moon has a reputation for trouble. It raises high tides, it makes dogs howl, it wakes you up in the middle of the night with beams of moonlight stealing through drapes. If a moonbeam wakes you up on the night of May 5th, 2012, you might want to get out of bed and take a look. This May’s full Moon is a “super Moon,” as much as 14% bigger and 30% brighter than other full Moons of 2012.

The scientific term for the phenomenon is “perigee moon.” Full Moons vary in size because of the oval shape of the Moon’s orbit. The Moon follows an elliptical path around Earth with one side (“perigee”) about 50,000 km closer than the other (“apogee”). Full Moons that occur on the perigee side of the Moon’s orbit seem extra big and bright.

Such is the case on May 5th at 11:34 pm Eastern Daylight Time1 when the Moon reaches perigee. Only one minute later, the Moon will line up with Earth and the sun to become brilliantly full. The timing is almost perfect.

Are You and Your Family Ready?

It’s Severe Weather Preparedness Week across the country, a time set aside by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service for everyone to learn about what types of disasters may occur in their communities, and how to be ready to respond to these emergencies.

In 2011, more than 8,000 people in the United States were injured in weather-related emergencies. More than 1,000 lost their lives. The American Red Cross responded to nearly 63,000 fires, almost 2,000 floods, more than 520 tornadoes, nearly 330 explosions and other hazardous material accidents and more than 160 major snow storms The Red Cross reminds everyone that it is important to prepare for possible disasters and other emergencies which can strike suddenly, at any time, anywhere.

THREE STEPS TO BEING PREPARED Being prepared begins long before severe weather threatens. The Red Cross urges everyone to take three important steps to get prepared:

Get a kit. Build an easy-to-carry emergency preparedness kit that you can use at home or take with you in case you have to evacuate. Include items such as water, non-perishable food, a flashlight and extra batteries, a battery-powered radio, first aid kit, and medications.
Make a plan. Talk with members of your household about what to do during emergencies. Plan what to do in case everyone is separated, and choose two places to meet—one right outside the home, in case of a sudden emergency such as a fire, and another outside the neighborhood, in case you cannot return home or are asked to evacuate
Be informed. Know what situations may occur where you live, where you work, where you go to school.

As everyone learns what natural disasters may occur in their community, the Red Cross has specific checklists available for download, containing steps people can take to remain safe in different situations. These checklists give folks the facts they need on what to do before, during and after a disaster or emergency situation.

The Red Cross also conducts several programs to help people be prepared. The “Ready When the Time Comes” program trains employees from corporations and mobilizes them as a community-based volunteer force when disaster strikes. “Be Red Cross Ready” is a web-based interactive training program that teaches people how to be ready for emergencies. The Red Cross “Do More Than Cross Your Fingers” campaign, featuring Jamie Lee Curtis, shows people how to customize their emergency kits.

My sister and her husband went around Pickens County and Bent Tree enjoying the springtime weather and she took these pictures for me. I just love springtime in North Georgia! All the trees getting their new leaves, the flowers blooming, sun shining much longer, green grass, warmer water, Oh What A Wonderful Time!

Getting photos of all the newness of Spring is great too! Just to be able to look back at the pictures later and see the new season coming into play is awesome…here are a few pictures of our little area of Pickens County taken by Sheila Grubbs. Thank You Sheila.

VanGoghs in Jasper Georgia

Happy Spring Everyone!

Gardens, Dogwoods, Pollen, Colors, Moles, Sunshine, Chirping Birds,daffodils ~ That’s art in itself! All in Jasper, Georgia

VanGoghs has had an exciting month filled with all sorts of activities. If you have missed out come see us in April! Thanks to all of you that taught classes this month. If any of you have an art talent and would like to teach a class or workshop at VanGoghs just let me know. Class attendance has been awesome! I have inquires all the time for “Clay, jewelry making, Polyamer clay, photography,collage, drawing”, so there is an opportunity for anyone that is interested.

We had a ladies luncheon at VanGoghs this month. It was such a delight! So if any of you have monthly “get togethers” with friends or for birthdays…give a call and I can let you know what we have to offer.

Children’s Afterschool Art Activity ~ It’s amazing… 15 students each week. We are currently working on various projects and we will have a “Little VanGoghs Artist Show” on May 19th! Inquire about Summer Art Camps ~

Drum Circle ~ Always the second Tuesday of the month! The month of April, Robin Tondra from Crazy Dog Art will be leading us in our session. You will enjoy this! Don’t miss it…it’s free and it’s great music! You don’t have to drum, just come and enjoy the others making music. Pot Luck Dinner ~ Bring a dish to share … We will begin drumming around 6:15.

Fabulous First Friday ~ Join us, Burnt Mountain Trading, Regina Hines Kudzu Art and Artsmith Pottery as we all will be open 5-7pm!!!! All within walking distance. VanGoghs and Burnt Mountain will have refreshments provided by Madelines, Easter Bunny gifts throughout both shops! Ellen Minion from Ball Ground will be showcasing her art this evening! Also, come meet Audry Webb the new Framer at Burnt Mountain! Let Audry introduce you to her world of framing. Join us all for refreshments, search for Easter gifts, Mother’s Day gifts, and certainly wedding gifts.

Professors of Reinhardt Art Show ~ Yep, they are coming! This is going to be another exciting venue at VanGoghs, come out and meet these artistic professors.

Whimsical Art Event ~ I know you have been hearing about this, reading about it and such! Well if you haven’t gotten your tickets, now is the time to do it. $10 each!!! I have seen quite a few pieces of art come in and some fabulous pieces. Not only have many of you submitted pieces but we have pieces from Florida, Alabama, Atlanta, Virginia, Penn, Illonois, North Carolina and other areas. Oh my stars…. Jeff Dobson will be our auctioneer for the evening (now that’s fun in itself). I have only 10 tickets left to sell! All proceeds benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Pickens County ~

Marc Unger – Classical Guitarist in Pickens County

You may not think about the great finds we have right here in Pickens County, Georgia but when you hear or read about them, you go – Wow, that’s great to know.

Take Marc Unger – he has been around Pickens County, at least as far as I’ve known, since 2002 – because that is when we asked him to play at our wedding we were planning in Bent Tree. We were having a late morning wedding outside, on our deck in mid June and wanted many unique, memorable attributes to our wedding. One of them was Marc. He played for our guests and his music was beautiful! Now you have to realize, that was 10 years ago but I still remember so much about that day and he and his music were exceptional.

So if you get the opportunity to listen to Marc play, do so. He plays at the Appalachia Grill at Big Canoe on the first and third Friday of every month. Take a minute to get over there and listen to him play while enjoying a wonderful meal. You will be so glad that you did.
