Early-bird registration $275

After September 15, 2012, the price will be $325

See hotel information below.

Be one of the first to sign up for a great weekend of professional development and renewing friendships with your JAWS pals. We’re meeting at the Tamaya Resort and Spa on the Santa Ana Pueblo near Albuquerque Oct. 26 – 28. You’ll want to fly into Albuquerque. The resort is about 40 minutes from the airport.

Come early and stay late – we have twist on our usual schedule. Plan to arrive by noon on Friday, Oct. 26 and attend the training on how to cover the economics of your beat. JAWS is teaming up with the Reynolds Center for Business Journalism to provide some valuable training on covering the business side to any story. It starts at 1 p.m. on Friday and is included in the regular CAMP registration fee.

If you come on Thursday, you can take advantage of training being held by the American Copy Editors Society (at their member rates) and later team up with JAWS Past President and Albuquerque resident Megan Kamerick for some sight seeing on Friday morning.

We’re also working to schedule extra programming on Sunday with an additional speaker – a really special one, I promise. We may not be able to schedule her until Sunday afternoon or evening, so make plans to stay if you can.

Other highlights:

Negotiating Your Way to the Top
Hone the skills you need to move forward, whether in advocating for a story, a position, more money or just to gain confidence in asserting yourself. Amy Resnick is inviting experts to CAMP that will give you the tools boost your influence, power and pay.

Tech Training for Women
You’ve heard of speed dating? We’re going to try it with social media. This will be your chance for quick and targeted mini sessions on everything from Facebook to Storify to Twitter. Tech mavens Teresa Puente and Sandra Fish are working wonders again to bring you the latest and greatest. You’ll even have time to practice the social media tools you want to master.

Keesha Gaskins will be our 2012 Shanahan Speaker.
As you know, at least 32 states are dealing with some new manifestation of so-called Photo ID or other restrictive measures for voter eligibility. This phenomenon has produced surprising results in many 2010 legislative elections. Keesha is senior counsel at The Brennan Center for Justice Democracy Program and a former state League of Women Voters executive. The Brennans’ Center at New York University’s law school has been at the forefront of a legal and public education campaign to challenge these laws and explain likely effects. With CAMP coming just before the November elections, Keesha’s news-to-use speech will address what has happened but also suggest effects to look for in this campaign season.

Human Trafficking
This is a crisis everywhere. Fara Warner is bringing us experts to fill us in on trends and tell us how to cover this important story in our own communities.

Freelance law, creative commons and libel
Dawn Garcia is bringing in lawyers and experts to help you navigate the issues and details of protecting what your write and telling the story in a way that protects you.

We’ll also have sessions on dealing with Midlife, Motherhood and Maintaining a Career; being part of the future of local journalism; and covering Indian country and Native American issues.

And, of course, we’re building in free time to enjoy the beauty and culture of the Southwest.

Don’t wait. Early bird registration is only $275 (including most meals and all sessions). It will cost $ 325 after Sept. 15.

More details on the schedule will be posted as times and panelists are confirmed.
