November the 5th is Guy Fawkes Night here, a celebration of the downfall of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605. I am beginning to wonder if now it’s just an excuse to get together as a community, gather round a bonfire and watch some fireworks. Which is awesome, and why not?

Fortunately for us we live just off the local park where our town’s firework display is held. Our balcony produces an excellent view of the show – and easy access to warmth! I must admit to not being much of a fan of standing outside at night at the beginning of winter, bonfire or no bonfire.

This year I decided to try and take some photographs, having such a good vantage spot.

f/3.5 Exposure 1/8 secs ISO 200 Focal length 18mm

I used my Pentax DA that came with my camera, simply because I couldn’t decide on a different lens. I’d read some articles (listed below) about what to use, but uncertain about where exactly to focus, I went with old faithful. Next time I want to experiment more, I’m sure my prime lens could get some fantastic results.

More pictures and tips after the jump!

f/3.5 Exposure 3 secs ISO 200 Focal length 18mm

I kept my f-stop the same (which I would probably play with next time) and just experimented with shutter speeds. I had the camera on a tripod, in the same position the whole time. I did zoom in at one point, but was unhappy with the results.

Having it on a tripod allowed me to photograph the finale in such a way as to fade it all together in the above slideshow. I wish I’d got the end properly as I feel it ends too abruptly, but another lesson for next time. I probably would have put the camera on continuous shooting mode had I thought of it so I could just hold the shutter while I wanted it to take the pictures. This would have worked much better than taking the picture and then waiting for it to store it.

Exposure - all 1/2 sec except the bottom right which was 6 seconds. I adjusted the contrast slightly to remove light pollution. f/3.5 ISO 200 Focal length 18mm

I really liked these, they don’t look like normal fireworks to me, just weird and pretty explosions.

f/3.5 Exposure 1/6 secs ISO 200 Focal length 18mm

Not so keen on the shorter exposure, would rather have the longer trails, but did like these pictures for the colour.

<img title="Woking Fireworks 2009 - 5" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2692/4086593321_4efd77575f.jpg" alt="Exposure - all 1/3 sec except the bottom right which was 1/3 seconds. I adjusted the contrast slightly to remove light pollution. f/3.5 ISO 200 Focal length 18mm

I loved the pictures and can’t wait to experiment again!

Ok, so my birthday was like a month ago, but I never did talk about it and I would like to!

My birthday this year fell on a Monday, so the weekend was filled with a party with my friends and a party with my family – lots of good food, good conversations. I had a fantastic weekend!

For the actual day it was just the Mister and I, he took me up to London for a trip on the London Eye – having never been.

You can find some of my photographs on flickr. I thought it was a great experience. Would love to go up at night as well! We were fortunate enough for it to be a mild day, with some cloud cover but lots of sun, so the views were clear, but it wasn’t too bright.

I’ve fallen in love with the pseudo tilt-shift effect and so thought I’d try it out with some of them, since I was looking from above and all

I got a ton of presents. I love presents. I can’t help it, everyone loves presents. And I loved everything everyone got me this year. Such great choices! Some things I never knew I needed until I had them (I’m thinking of the book about how to make felt animals – see below)

This is a small selection of my presents, I still have one to cash in (shopping!) and any money I got went on the Great Devon Trip to see Muse. These are the ones I hadn’t found homes for before remembering to take a photo!

In that black box is some incense. I’m halfway through the “Logo Design Workbook” now. The notebook has become my art/design notes book.

Check out the TRADITIONAL SHERBET at the top there. So much better than the plastic packaged stuff. I’m eating it sparingly, trying to make it last as long as possible. I’ll probably keep one forever. The earings were made by my friend Michelle, you can buy more of her excellent jewellery on her Etsy page.

The Cute Book is the felt animal thing. I love sewing. It’s not something I ever make time for, but for some reason I just love it. I took textiles at GCSE as a result. I didn’t know I needed this book until I had it. I’m now in the process of making my first lizard, something more than one person has asked me for. Getting the felt involved a trip to a Hobby Craft and my God was I in heaven there! SO MUCH ART STUFF. I nearly had a heart attack.

And the Mister was so kind as to replace the cheapo Claddagh ring I accidentally put through the wash, with a nicer, more expensive silver one

I’ve had a very musical week. An amazing week.

Last Sunday we headed over to Reading Festival to watch the one and only Radiohead perform. I had no idea what to expect, and was blown away. The other bands were good too, but I’d be lying if I said I’d gone to see them. I was there purely for Radiohead, and some festival fun.

I have to say, hearing that many people sing along to Karma Police, it sends chills down your spine – it really does. I’ve never quite got over that part of the gig experience, people singing along – all those people on the same page. There’s nothing like it.

It was great to just chill out to their interesting and extraordinary music. We had a wonderful time. You can catch the highlights on the BBC website here.

Then we had Muse. Muse and their homecoming gigs in Teignmouth, Devon. (163 miles away…) Somehow, somehow we ended up with tickets for both the gigs. Friday we headed down, checked into our hotel, headed back out to the first gig. Exhausted though I was from the epic driving, it was fantastic. The Den is a small venue, so no matter where you were the view was good.

Saturday, just as awesome. We spent the day exploring Teignmouth town , down on the beach, and eating cream teas… and donut men.

Probably my favourite song from the gigs was Cave. It wasn’t just Cave. It was a “jazz rendition”. The piano was spectacular. The whole thing was spectacular. See the vid here!

My other favourite is the song which I guess has replaced Butterflies (similar in their epicness) on their live setlist, United States of Eurasia. I’d have been a bit upset if we’d only gone on the Saturday when Matt messed up the Chopin at the end and didn’t finish it

Favourite new song? Easy. Undisclosed Desires.

See my flickr for more pics!

In other photography news, I finally finished my black and white film I had in my SLR and now have those to upload when I get a minute (mostly photos from The Great Snow and a day in Brighton). I’m also planning to sit down and sort out my Project 366 photos (though I think this year didn’t start out so well with that as last year).

I’m using a modified version of K2 at the moment (especially since the sidebar is looking rather shoddy!) Also need to recategorise stuff and give the blog a better focus. If I ever get a minute! There’s a design in progress at least!

I added in my twitter and my delicious in the sidebar, thinking of adding flickr, but don’t know, I have a photo gallery of my own in the works, so is flickr worth the pro money? (My accounts almost full I think). Hmm. And it’s an arse to have to update two places when I take photos… we’ll see! Follow me on twitter anyway! jaz_design. I just installed Tweetie on my phone so now I’m never going to shut up! I also worked out that there was a wordpress ap so I can blog from my phone too

In other news, we got a hamster yesterday. For no particular reason, weirdest impulse buy ever! He’s very cute though, syrian. Fuzz Lightyear is his name and he sure likes to spin his wheel to fast and go flying out of it! (Falling, with style ) There’s a couple of blurry iPhone photos on my twitpic too.

If you remember, I was debating which smart phone to buy, and well, the iPhone won, despite it’s drawbacks (rubbish camera, no MMS etc)

I’ve had it about a week and a half. I tried to buy one from a real bricks and mortar o2 shop, however the four times I tried it was “we don’t have the sim cards” and that was it! No “we’ll take your number, put one buy for you when we get it and give you a call”. Well anyway, in the time taken to faff about with all this it actually went up in price by £10. Who knows why. I still bought one from the online store in the end.

For the record, do not buy their Belkin screen protectors that they have on there for about £8, you get one tiny one that doesn’t cover the whole screen, and that’s it! My other half bought some for the same price (can’t remember what kind, may have got them from a phones4u), you get two, and they cover the whole front of the phone (aside from the button, and the hole at the top, obviously). I still haven’t bought any new ones and have just been surviving with this one. I haven’t purchased any casing for it either, I figured what’s the point of something shiny if you’re going to cover it with something ugly to protect the shiny and in turn never see the shiny! So no covers for me.

I like it, I really do. The actual features you would find on a phone are a bit lacking, assigning songs as ringtones for instance, you can’t just do, you either have to repurchase the song as an iTunes ringtone, or mess about trying to make your own via some jiggery pokery that I’ve not tried yet.

I really like the text messaging “conversations”, I think that’s an awesome idea, but the one thing that annoys me about texts is that it doesn’t tell you when you’ve strayed into two message terratory. I get 300 free messages a month, so it’s not that big a deal, but it’s standard in all phones, so why is it missing? (Or am I missing something?)

MMS, nuff said, though there is an ap for that.

And yes copy and paste would be nice.

I currently have my aps organised by colour and most used. The first page is the most used.

Aps of note include Evernote, Toodledo, HealthCoach, Balance, CountDown and Bejewelled 2.

Evernote, Google it. Everyone uses it, I’ve not used it much because I quite like the little notes thing on the phone, but Evernote takes it to a whole new level.

Toodledo – chose this over Remember the Milk, people over at lifehacker seemed to think it was more feature-rich and cheaper. I really like it, hardly ever use the web interface, just use the ap on the phone. I’ve not explored how it can do reminders though, and I know RtM can remind you when you’re actually near something, so I don’t know. Will have to research further!

HealthCoach is just a bit of fun while I’m trying to healthy myself up – and it is a bit of fun. I’ve found that the quick entry for the food log (choose between balanced, heavy, light and none on meal and snack types) is actually pretty good – I noticed how it matched up with my actual tracking on Calorie Count (which is sorely lacking in an ap!). I like the little challanges too.

Balance – hey it was free, and Mint doesn’t work over here, or isn’t all Englishified. I’m not fussed about it taking stuff directly from my accounts, I just wanted a quick, simple way to track my monies, and this is it! Offers pin protection too.

CountDown – I just like it because I’m so excited about my holiday to Mallorca in April, and pancake day. Does what it says on the tin. Wish you could set one of your countdowns to be the icon though.

Bejewelled 2 – good way to waste a couple of minutes when you’ve got nothing else to do!

I also think you should all know about NuevaSync. I have my Toodledo stuff syncd with my Google Calendar, and also have other stuff in there. I wanted all this in my iPhone calendar, it took me hours of searching to figure out how. NuevaSync uses an exchange to sync your calendar and some other things that the phone can’t just do (with Windows, the only calendar it lets you sync is in Outlook). I was so happy when I found NuevaSync. Works like a charm! No problems whatsoever.

The one thing I would like to see (and haven’t been able to find) is a good tamagotchi-esque style ap. The free ones I tried were naff, and the one good looking pay one got bad reviews.

I’ve also been choosing my wallpapers from the tons of amazing, inspirational ones featured at Abduzeedo

In other news, I’m working on the theme redesign for the Sporum at the moment, my eyes are going cross eyed from staring at bizarre code, but I’ll get there! I also discovered how to use WordPress as a photo gallery, so when I get chance I’m building it up on my laptop, ready to launch… eventually! I still plan to use flickr and deviantArt as a draw, but I wanted something that was completely mine.

Happy new year everyone! I’m having a fantastic day off, sitting in bed, surfing the web and eating chocolate – bliss.

The one thing I’m trying not to let ruin my day is my phone. Messages from last night were coming through strangely, so I thought I’d switch it off and back on. It won’t turn back on. This is apparently not an uncommon problem and fixes cost money and all the data stored on the phone. Fortunately my pictures and things are on the external memory card, but my contacts, messages and a few other bits and bobs are not. I’m also generally unhappy with the phone. The OS has had it’s quirks, and the other week it randomly deleted all the default themes shipped with the phone.

It’s still under manufacturer’s warrenty, but part of me stopped trusting the phone a while ago. I’ve only had it 14 months. I want to go back to a Nokia I just bought a new camera though, not really looking to spend precious funds on a new phone. I guess we’ll see.

Anyway, back to new years… 2008 recap! I…

…graduated
…turned 21
…moved into my very own place
…started working fulltime for the very first time
…had a second anniversary
…generally entered the world of the grown up

I have no idea what’s going to happen this year, which is weird after knowing for the last 17 years or so of full time education exactly what would happen each year. I do know what will happen this month though:

Websites, websites, websites. The ones which have been in the works the last few months will launch or get close to launching.
At work work there should be some exciting design stuff happening!
More photography!
I’ll cave and get a new phone

Project 365

I tried it last year and made it to June with a fair few missed days. This year I hope to make it a bit further! I have a new camera, a Pentax Optio S12, which is so dinky it fits in my pocket but still gives a great picture and has plenty of options. Would have loved that digital Leica I saw, but it was 6 times more expensive!

For the time being – until I sort out a photo gallery here on my hosting – I’ll be posting the pictures to my Shuttercal. I don’t want to pay for another flickr subscription and think I’m almost all out of room on there, plus Shuttercal was specifically designed for this I’ll put monthly mosaics on here too! I’ve not taken today’s picture yet, trying to think of something appropriate

Happy new year everyone!

We played lots of games, got lots of free things, entered competitions, drank beer. It was a very good day.

The mister, two guys from work and I all went and played Guitar Hero: World Tour on one of the stages, and because the mister was so amazing at it, he won a full copy of Guitar Hero 3. We all got Guitar Hero t-shirts too which was very cool.

The mister took me to V Festival at Chelmsford for my 21st birthday. We only went for the Saturday, primarily to see Muse (making this my fifth time)

We spent the day down at the main stage, enjoying the atmosphere and dipping in and out of the crowd for the bands we wanted to see.

We inadvertently saw the Futureheads a second time (they supported Muse at the Albert Hall) and I still wasn’t impressed although that song with the noises did get the whole place making the same silly noises, which was pretty entertaining.

We then made our way into the crowd. It was pretty early in the day so it wasn’t too busy just then. I was quite excited to see Alanis Morissette. I’ve never been that into her music, but the chance to see it live seemed like too good to miss.

Turns out I was right. Songs like Thankyou and Ironic were amazing. I didn’t realise quite how busy it had got either – whenever the camera panned back on the crowd I got quite a shock as we were quite near the front and there were just so many people! That many people singing in unision is awesome. Alanis was awesome, if not a little crazy

Following Alanis were the Lostprophets, who I also wanted to see. I wasn’t familiar with all their music, but it’s pretty easy to pick up for the most part. The crowd had a great energy for their set, really screaming from the rooftops. The lead singer got a good rapport going with the crowd, singling out a guy waving a giant, inflatable penis (heh), telling him to represent. They played one new song, and plugged their new album quite excessively (out 2009, dontchaknow?). I was quite impressed, for some reason I thought they might be a band who produced good sounding albums and then wouldn’t be able to cut it live. I was wrong.

Watch @ youtube

Can’t Catch Tomorrow & A Town Called Hypocrisy

We took a break for lunch, not really interested in Maximo Park or the Kooks, although we did mooch back into the crowd during the Kooks – figuring when they left that we could make our way forward (it was necessary to be in front of the sound stage, otherwise there was a large stretch of crowd where you could barely hear anything) during the break between them and the Stereophonics, and then again in the gap before Muse.

The one thing I will comment on about the Kooks, is their crazy notion of making everyone sit down on a piss soaked, beer covered, rubbish strewn floor. Needless to say it didn’t work. We think he wanted everyone to jump up at the same time. No one did it. They threatened to not continue until everyone did. No one much seemed to care.

The Stereophonics were amazing. I had no idea what to expect, what they looked like, what the majority of their songs were (turns out it was a bunch I liked and had never bothered to find out what they were). I’m sure it’s been said, but the lead is sex on legs. Honestly. The sun was setting while they were playing and the camera got some great shots of him against the sun. It wasn’t until sometime during the week I found out his name was Kelly, and the whole idea of him was ruined Back to the night, they did a great set, all the classics, got the whole crowd singing, and performed a new song. I thoroughly enjoyed the set, and would definitely go and see them live again given the chance.

Watch @ youtube:

Dakota

And then, we just had to wait patiently for Muse. Or pretty impatiently. Standing up for 10 hours, being pushed and shoved, not drinking a lot to make staying in the crowd easier – we were exhausted, but not disappointed.

We were right by the sound stage for Muse, getting any further forward would have been impossible although it didn’t stop people from trying. We and some others tried to form some kind of impenetrable wall and just refuse to move, but it seems nothing stops the selfish people who didn’t bother to get in the crowd in time to see the show. Nevertheless, Muse did not disappoint, playing Dead Star which I’d never seen live, and it was totally awesome. Saw Butterflies a fifth time and it just gets better and better.
They had lasers decorating the sky, and things reminiscent of the Wembley setup, which was cool. I was a little disappointed they didn’t live up to all the promises they made leading up to V (new songs, collaboration, space ships), but it was still worth the trip, and the standing up for much too long.

Watch @ youtube:

Knights of Cydonia
Hysteria
Supermassive Black Hole
Man with a Harmonica

We staggered back to the mister’s dad’s car, and were driven back to my little flat, ready for my birthday the next day, much in need of a shower and some sleep.

Posts long overdue…

The last two months or so has been quite a rollercoaster, so much so I’m still not sure what normal is!

July 21st the mister and I graduated from university with a bachelor of arts in design for interactive media. I managed to get my first class honours despite glandular fever doing it’s level best to ruin my second year.

Dressing up in the gowns was great fun, I got to do a batman impression (if he had pink hair…).

The ceremony was great, it felt good to have a final “closure” as it were for something I worked so hard for. Sheila Hancock, the chancelor of the university gave an awesome speech at the end. She’s such a great lady and it was an honour to meet her, allbeit briefly.

I also enjoyed watching the mister and my friends graduate. The trip to the pub afterwards was well deserved

You can view more graduation photographs on my Facebook.
—

I moved into my little apartment not long after that. I’m on the third floor from the car park entry and it was the hottest day of the year.

Fortunately for me I had an ever helpful mother and mister, and the help of Paul’s Moves. He was a great help – if you need a man and a van, check that link and ignore what the website looks like

With the arrival of “The Sims 2: Apartment Life” I’ve made a sims version of my apartment block. Once The Sporum returns and I find the time, you’ll be able to peruse and download the lot for your games.

I love my little flat and it feels quite homely now I’ve been here a while. I had a housewarming with excessive pizza, and my birthday drinks out on the balcony.

I’m not too keen on being so close to town, the estate agent and it is a bit expensive, but it’s more than adequate for now.

We will be exhibiting work we’ve done on our course and will be available to chat to. The rest of the school is exhibiting too and from what I’ve seen going up, there’s going to be some really interesting work to experience!

It was pretty darn special.

I didn’t think much of the support (the Futureheads), just sounded like really loud guitars playing chord after chord but that might just be because I don’t know their music. They did alright – better than the Noisettes at Wembley Arena anyway.

So what was so special? There’s a reason Muse have been labelled the best live act around at the minute and that’s because they are the epitome of awesome on stage. They did all the usual songs (Feeling Good, Supermassive Black Hole, Time is Running Out etc) but also played Fury (which I’ve never seen live) and Megalomania on the (excuse me) big fuck off organ. Second largest in the UK according to wiki. A lot of Muse fans are pretty excited about that, with good reason. It was immense. Matt on that thing reminded me of the Phantom of the Opera a little, he just has that haunting quality.

Of course I was more than happy once they played Butterflies and Hurricanes, which had a bit of a different twist to the piano, and was as usual, spellbinding. I can’t help it. I love that song.

There was also a lot of other random riffs and little short pieces and things and Matt for some reason burrowing under his guitar… and the massive Bliss balloons, one of which Matt burst with his guitar at the end of the song.

Anyway, I started a YouTube account for the rubbish videos I made with my phone, the audio’s ok though. My yootoob. Includes Megalomania on the organ and Butterflies and Hurricanes.

The gig is for the Teenage Cancer Trust, and if past experience is anything to go by, it will be amazing. I’ve seen them at Wembley Arena, and Wembley Stadium, so this’ll be a different experience as it’s a significantly smaller venue. I’m excited. We’re 2 in 5000 peeps who get to go. How awesome.

Also I put up the rest of the Bleeding Rose pics. You can see them here or here. I don’t change the prices they put in on the prints, so if you want one let me know and I’ll sort them out to be more reasonable.

I had this photograph featured in a piece on NowPublic.com about the government maybe enforcing some kind of smoking licence scheme. I know it’s not that big of a deal, but it’s really nice that they asked to use my photograph. Also VOTE PETE for student support officer.
I saw Sweeney Todd. Whever it was, with the Mister. I thought the movie was good. Not my favourite Burton, but it kept me entertained. Here I tried drawing with white on black paper, which is much harder than it sounds. I will post the finished piece, when I finish it, I guess.

The Mister’s mum sent us pressies from Egypt. This is the little wood camel we got. Name suggestions in the comments please!

My best friend came to visit that Friday. Haven’t seen him since Christmas so it was a blast. The Mister cooked us up a good dinner and good times were had by all. These are some of the flowers he brought me.

I honestly adore how in England going to the beach in winter isn’t a bad idea. I spent the best part of my day down at the beach whichever day this was, just listening to music and sleeping on the pebbles. It was awesome. The weather was nice too. I love this photo.

My Valentines present was oil pastels which I asked for. Expect an art in the next few weeks This is also the card I made for the Mister, the idea for which I stole from Dinosaur Comics. Check that out. Hilarity with dinosaurs. It’s hand painted anyway. Check me out. Little miss artist.

Valentines day itself, the Mister cooked me a lovely meal, we had lots of wine, and watched Lost in Translation. I quite liked the film, it kind of reminded me of Eternal Sunshine in the way it was formulated and how it was two people making a connection.

Massive emo moment, haha! I’ll post when I have the rest of this set up, I have a few of them. They’re sort of a sequel to my Descent themed set and part of my Self Elected project.

And no lectures about time management either, there were issues with this project.

Just a note to say I do have my daily photos, almost all of them, I think I missed one. You can see them when I have time to upload them, maybe Thursday. Provided I don’t drink too much after hand in tomorrow and cease to exist.

I dyed my hair today. Tis black. Also, I’M SEEING SWEENEY TODD ON THURSDAY.

We spent Christmas eve snuggled up watching telly, drinking Champagne, and then woke up uncharacteristicly early Christmas morning to open our presents.

We’d decided to do a “serious” present, a “silly” present and a bunch of stockingy presents for each other. I’d bought him Mass Effect (Xbox 360), the Muse poster from the gigs we went to in June, a Screaming Flying Monkey and a lot of chocolate and sweeties

He’d accepted my suggestion of jewellery, and got me the beautiful set shown here. I picked butterflies because of the Muse song “Butterflies and Hurricanes” which is my favourite song of all time, it’s pretty special. He also got me Lego Star Wars II (PS2) (which I haven’t had chance to play yet), a make and display Play-Doh parrot which is awesome, and lots of sweeties.

My Mum got me a subscription to Adbusters magazine which is awesome because I won’t be able to read it at the library once I finish uni , I got money, a new duvet and set, lots of chocolate and sweeties, a nail varnish set, Sleepy Hollow, Design Without Boundaries: Visual Communication in Transition and I’m sure I’m forgetting some stuff.

This Wednesday my Mister and I attended the Future of Web Design conference in Kensington, Londinium. I’d never been to anything like this before so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I found the experience really enjoyable, it was really interesting to be with so many people interested in that kind of thing, and the talks, whilst often things I knew or common sense, still helped bring my mind back to what I should be doing, and what the web’s about.

That said, I’m a student, I’ve worked in industry not even two years. From what I’ve read on other blogs the professionals weren’t as keen on the day as I was, but I do think that had a lot to do with the level of experience – I’m sure a lot of them have been to a lot of conferences. As it was there weren’t many students there at all, just our small crowd from Pompey and maybe one or two others. Definitely a professional day. I did enjoy it and I did find it interesting. I’m glad uni suggested it, and I think the experience was well worth the (hefty) 60 pounds…
I have some not so great photos I’ll probably stick on my flickr next time I’m at home.

These are some of my notes from the day. Made as coherent as possible, I was very tired that day :S

Finding Your Creative Vein

Brendan Dawes [magneticNorth]

Brendan talked a lot about the “wrapping” of a site, the extra small touches, creating anticipation – these things that offline enhance an experience. Efficiency is perhaps not always key.

To illustrate this he showed the Diesel website his company did for a handbag competition, which included quite an extensive path before you got to the “submit yourself” section. I thought it worked really well – and according to the public response it did. It draws you in – it creates an experience – something a lot of the speakers mentioned – experience. I tend to refer to web design – or anything I do – as experience design. It doesn’t really matter what media it is, ever since I discovered one of Shedroff’s pieces on just that. Experience is the key.

One thing I loved was an interface made with Play-Doh. The amount of Play-Doh on the screen affected how quickly a movie clip would run. Quite ingenious. Play-Doh is the best. They’re the best for using it.

People like playing.

Brendan finished with a great quote:

“They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night.” – Poe

Designing for Web Apps

Ryan Singer [37signals]

10 Tips for Sign Up Forms

1. Making stuff up is hard – start with the basics.
2. Username is taken – Ajax has functionality that checks while you type – genius!
3. What is your cousin’s sister’s dog’s name? – Only ask for enough info to get rolling. Leave large profiles etc to be filled in later if user wishes.
4. Words are your friends – ask questions, relax, you’re talking to people.
5. Characters it doesn’t like – eliminate error frustration.
6. Muse me – give examples.
7. Tell me what I’m getting.
8. Warning OMG everything’s broken! – Think like a human when writing error messages.
9. Welcome – first time visit, say thanks, bookmark this page etc. Continuity in experience.
10. Just give me the keys – make it easy, keep confirmation email simple.

Keep momentum. Sign up doesn’t stop at submit.

Users don’t care about using your app, they want to “kick ass”.

I quite liked this little tip session – I know I never really think when creating forms…

—

More notes to come, too tired now.

I’m working on an essay about imagined communities, joy. Ed’s playing Sonic Heroes, I’m jealous. But I’m listening to Placebo, so it’s ok. And I have cake. Good cake.

Also, if you’ve never heard of Girls are Pretty and have a few decades to waste reading amusing things, you should go there now.
