Scout & company / The fed.

Last, last week i actually ventured out of my bedroom.. SHOCKER! I know i know, i'm a hermit. But anyway my dear friend Britney from Scout & company (her blog is amazing, her videos are A++ and her hair is nice, also her face is alright i guess ;) go give her some love!!) consumed some food, saw a film and danced the night away. It was great! She takes such good photos and so i asked her to guest post, enjoy ~

A couple weeks ago Eloise and I (hey, I'm Britney) hit up what everybody affectionately calls The Fed. Aka Federal Street Delicatessen. While Eloise’s company was great (killer actually. Many laughs) the waiters and waitresses got me uber excited. Dressed up as though they were from a 1950s(ish) American Diner I was in bliss.

We had to wait for a bit outside for a seat, but that was ok bc I got my first cup of joe and Elly nabbed herself a cider. Man. I feel like I sound super pretentious in this writing or something. Anyway. After that we got a seat, a nice bearded waiter came to serve us (did I mention how all the wait staff were lovely) and we got some food. The waiter made the ‘experience’ and I know its his job and I know he won't remember us but he added to the night and the laughs.

The atmosphere was rad with the open kitchen kind of area and the booths and the bottomless coffee. And the menu wasn't too shabby either. Over all I give it a 10 plus twelve. Yip. That’s my made up nonsensical ranking system. Take what you will from it. Elly told me to write around 500 words. (E: Excuse you brit! I said no such thing! 5000 photos were my words ;)) But I'm finding that hard so A) go to The Fed. Its mandatory. B) heres a bunch of photos.

Digital Art | Ipad creations

So, we have established already that its cold (and i've been whining) but in the midst of this cold ive been worried about my paintings from last year that have been hanging out in storage. And so many of them have now been hung in my home. Which is so great apart from the fact that i can't get away from them! I'm serious! They follow me everywhere with their brush strokes and playful colors!

To remedy the tiny little painter yapping away in my brain i've taken to jotting down little compositions and colors on my ipad. Its quick, so much fun, clean and best of all stress free. I've done drawings on my ipad before (find here) but these are by far my favorite!

Time for the daily round two.

Currently i am sitting at my desk wrapped up warm in a down jacket and i kid you not, a lap blanket, Wistfully looking at these images and missing the time when i was able to wear a shirt without getting hypothermia.

Also i miss my cute little samurai/ sokka bun, not enough to even consider growing it out again.. but i have to admit it was pretty cute in its own right. I however love having what i call a boy cut, short and partless, i literally just roll out of bed and never look disheveled. Its glorious.

Also i am wearing a mens tee from barkers, seriously lasts 57x longer than womens tee. A $3 thrifted skirt that makes me feel so classy and my trusty birks which have been exiled till winter leaves ;(

dreaming of summer

This morning i woke up on the wrong end of my bed in foetal position. I got right up wrapped my thuggie around my waist like a totally cute zebra patterned skirt, chucked a hoodie over my already present jumper and stepped into my ugg boot slippers. Its cold guys, and i'm a woos.

This sudden dip in the temperature and weather has me feeling the feels for summer. Twice my friend lisa and i have scheduled a longboarding excursion and twice we have instead been met with torrential rain.

These photos are from one of the many evening/ sunset swims that happened this past summer, those were the good days! My friend cath who i'm swimming with is actually chilling in Bali for a couple of months which i'm very bitter about.

If you need me i'll be moping around my house wearing my entire wardrobe with a cup of tea that is either too hot or too cold.

New things: Objects and trajectories

I won't lie to you. This series of works are not new, they are actually from about 2 months ago but because of my 'un-intentionally-blank-page-phobia-hiatus' You are only getting to see them now.

These works illustrate my movement away from paint and into working with my hands. At this point i was still very attached to both color and 2D works, although the 2D 3D binaries that are in operation here are quite interesting.

I have an unbelievable amount of new-old work to show you guys and i'm excited because it gets better i promise. So keep your eyes peeled, don't forget to click the read more and please, please let me know what you think!

Why hello there friends! Its been a while coming but i can finally introduce a new.. series? Category? Thingymajig?

Its called 'The daily'.

The daily was born from the concept that i am not a fashion blogger, and will never be! Sometimes i post outfits and other fashion like things but i would never refer to my self as a fashion blogger or even a style blogger.

Because i am not restricted by these labels* ive decided to have a little fun! Obviously i like clothes and am quite fond of my personal aesthetic and so i will be delivering this insight into my wardrobe(?) through 'The daily' posts, snapshots of what i wear in my day to day life.

None of this over thinking, perfection or hyped up labels**. Its pretty much just me in a corner of my studio***

Buns & birks: an update

+ Yet again I am here apologising for my absence, it's getting kind of old, i know. I promise however, there is some good stuff coming your way! Including a new and more regular feature called 'the daily' So keep an eye out.

+ My practise has also taken a funny little dive in to sculpture and im super excited to be creating with my hands and am so so so inspired by all the amazing ceramic lines coming up. (check out zana's insta cause I am seriously excited for the things they are creating!)

+ Succumbed to the birkenstock trend.. I am never going back sometimes i forget that I'm even wearing shoes, they are that comfortable. After the initial "I look like a german tourist" feeling they become apart of your *soul*

and last but not least;

+ I have finally achieved my hair endgame. It goes into a bun. Think Sokka from Avatar. Now i just need to get over my fear of being in public with my Miley buns aka (and preferably) Baby spice buns Maybe they will pop up in a 'the daily' post.

Ripped jeans, dont care.

All the pants i own are ripped. And for good reason. I have this issue with pants and getting them to fit properly. Falling down? get a belt and deal with all the excess fat you're trying to ignore. Too tight? Deal with pain, lack of mobility and.. sitting down. I cant even think about this.

Ripped jeans, however are my new partner in crime, I don't have to care what they look like, they are already gross and cool at the same time, intentionally I might add. It doesn't matter if they get grubby, baggy or dirty because everyone already knows I don't care.

If you're not in on this comfort yet cool train, you should be.
Go grab a $12 pair of jeans from Kmart (mine) attack them with a craft knife (easier than you think, 100's of tutorials out there) and thank me later.

Four weeks later // new art

Four weeks, thats how long i've been back at uni. Im happy to say ive been producing quite a lot of art... that i actually like.

These are some patterns I've been working on but I am starting to see them more as compositions. I've also been making little objects that I am so excited to share with you. (soon!)

Every time I put this coat on I feel a little more cool. It's the perfect mix of 80's bold and clean cuts that i love.

This dress is actually a nightie i saw and loved too much for my bed to be the only one to appreciate it.

ladies who lunch (2013/14 new year)

Confession:

For New years this year (last year?) Maddi and I sat in bed drinking champagne and trolling the internet. We even bought in the new year by having a good ol' bounce on the trampoline (like the 10 year olds we are).

So, yes I realize its been 3 months since New Years but guess what.. I don't care! This past New Years we came to the conclusion that getting drunk and waking up hungover is no longer the classy thing to do, and not for us.

Cue brunch:

We bravely decided to host a brunch the next morning, welcoming the new year in with a few close friends, beautiful hydrangeas, plenty of liquids, fresh fruit and warm home made waffles. Everyone arrived with a peice of fruit to contribute to our enormous fruit salad and we laughed about our failed resolution lists, a common #1 was "don't be such a bitch" and the hazy night gone by.

This was honestly the best way to bring in the new year and i hope (even if this is SUPER late) that your 2014 is great/ going well!

Some thoughts from my recent 'year aging event'

I remember being 10 and dreaming about being 20, being able to do what I wanted, go where I wanted, wear what I wanted and probably most of all be taken seriously and having my thoughts and ideas validated by my adult peers. I obviously didn't have a clue how hard and how great it would be really be.

I'm happy to say that I'm still not the person I 'wanted' to be, yes happy. There are so many other things in life that are going to influence my decisions and beliefs. If I had decided exactly how I wanted to be perceived and set boundaries for myself I can guarantee I wouldn't be the person I am today. I'm still putty in the hands of the events that are slowly going to shape me, and that excites me.

Would you believe that I only discovered my undying love for art and also the fact that it was a viable career option when I was in my very last year of high school, a part of me wonders whether I would have turned out differently, happier even if I had known from the start. But the fact that it’s still a fresh (sort of) experience or idea means that I'm at an age where I can’t exhaust it and the sky really is my limit, and that excites me.

I often think about the money entering and then promptly leaving my bank account. I think that that money could take me anywhere I wanted it and that I’m a fool for not venturing out more, out of my comfort zone and out of my country.. But then I realize that I’m only 20, I have a good 40 years under my belt to avoid my parents and experience the world. This excites me.

I’m still young and that's not a bad thing. I’m excited.

I aged another year.
A few posts back I mentioned that this is my graduating year (ill have a bloody degree!!) and it dawned on me that I'm not ready to enter the real world, I still feel like a child with a brain that has so much space needing to be filled! Ive always loved learning and what i like to call collecting skills, I know that eventually that this will fade and other things will replace it in importance, so for now I'm going to savor being young and healthy. You should too.

In other news, I held a joint gathering with my soul sister Maddi at my abode. We had friends and food, swimming and a few too many vodka shots and it was a wonderful way to bring in our 20th year of living!

We also made a totally delicious cheat of a cake. Store bought pavlova (my fav) + pomegranate seeds + blue berries = Heaven!

Also just to toot my own horn, the next morning I got up (early.. so early and quite a lot worse for wear) and by 9am i had cleaned my entire house (it was carnage) and had a fresh breakfast of homemade waffles and fresh fruit on the table for the guests who stayed over. As you can see I'm pretty proud, I'll be telling that story for decades to come for sure.

Also wanted to thank Francis and Britney for being so amazing the entire day!

summers end

Today it dawned on me that summer is over. Uni has begun, my boycott of public transport has forcefully been ended and soon the winds will over power the sun. Although it's been a warm and beautiful summer I can't help but feel that I didn't make the most if it.

I obviously have horrific memory loss, i have had four months off and i can only remember like 5 days... and of those four months the events i remember the most fondly and clearest are evening trips to the beach with friends, Swimming at sunset, soaking up as much of New Zealands beauty as possible. Although i didn't get out of new Zealand i still experienced our summer full force.

I got interviewed, and its a good one.

It's no secret that I like menswear a whole lot more than women's wear, which is why I jumped at the chance to share a little bit about myself, style and menswear with Matt for the tastemaker feature on Barber Careers Agency. BCA is basically a site overflowing with information for people looking to getting into barbering/ cosmetology. In fact, after this interview I had deluded thoughts that I could even be a barber, I mean I do have the haircut for it... But then that would be a waste of my massive student loan!

Also collaborating with me on the images for this post is one of my best boys and coincidentally one if the best dressed gents I know, Adnaan, he's known me since i was a cringe worthy 14 year old and he still wants to be my friend. Wow. Enjoy the entire interview + photos below the jump

Question: How would you describe your own personal sense of style?

Answer: I’d like to be able to say something like California circa 1993 but in reality I’m still searching for that word that means comfort without making people think of mom jeans! I’m probably going to go with relaxed, carefree and slightly boyish.

Q: What colors do you tend to use most?

A: Ooh, I’m a big fan of grey and black but those are tones. Currently I’m drifting towards blues and greens, followed by pinks and oranges.

Q: Do you have a favorite designer? If so, who?

A: Hmm, good question. I don't know whether I have a favourite designer per se, but I do have a favourite collection; Karen Walker’s RTW Spring 2014, I did a post about it here. It’s basically what I wish my wardrobe looked like.

Q: What male celebrity do you think has a great sense of style?

A: I’m a bit weary about saying a celebrity has style due to the fact that there is always stylists lurking behind closed doors. That being said, Tom Hiddleston can rock a suit like no other! Also I think that Pharrell and Tinie Tempah always look pretty fresh. Special mention to fashion blogger Isaac Likes and his buddy Tom Bull too!

Q: Do you sell or promote any products you’d like to discuss?

A: Soon! I guess I would say I’m an artist (although I feel a bit pretentious saying that). So I’ve got a huge backlog of work to sell. I’m also hoping to get into the custom typography and sign writing market. Opening a shop mid 2014! Keep an eye out!

Q: What is your favorite look for a man? Why?

A: I’ve thought about this a lot and have decided that I’ll always respect a good brown leather shoe (brogues, boat shoes, etc.) paired with dark jean and rolled cuff. You can’t go wrong! In fact I’m known to rock this look too.

Q: For those men who aren’t as in to fashion, what simple fashion tips can you give?

A: Make sure your pants fit! 90′s may be coming back but baggy low ridden jeans are not (in my books anyway). In fact make sure everything fits well. Invest in good shoes, my recommendation for fool proof shoes are Clarks desert boots. Or take a leaf out of my favourite men’s fashion blogger Isaac likes book on how to rock Chucks well.

Q: Do you have any advice for the BarberCareerAgency.com readers who are interested in becoming barbers or cosmetologists?

A: Be passionate! Commit! Be creative and explore. Hair grows back! The more creative the better! I almost let someone carve a Christmas tree into the side of my head last Christmas! Maybe this year.

Last Night I was having dinner with my parents and as per usual they were joking (sometimes not joking) about what a terrible child I am, my response to these kind of statements is always "excuse you, im amazing!" or "wow, wow, wow, im the greatest child ever" followed by "I am a bless-ing guys".

This isnt me being vain, It's my (exaggerated) version of corny self affirmations. (You know the ones from self help books telling you to talk at the mirror?)

My love languages don't include words of affirmation, I don't particularly need someone to tell me I'm great, I don't need to be told how beautiful someone thinks I am, I don't thrive off that stuff like some people do.

Sometimes however, just sometimes I do need to hear those things... Not from someone else but from my self. I believe in the idea that you should be your biggest fan because who else is is going to be? I am my own best friend and its foolproof.

If you know how great you are, then chances are that everyone else will follow suit.

A collection of cakes

One of the reasons i started blogging what to document things, be they special or mundane. I recently, while trolling through and cleaning up this space discovered i've got a pretty great collection of my sisters baking/ birthday creations. I love food more than anything so i feel like this is a fitting documentation of both the years gone past and something (food) and the someones that i love.

I'm rebranding and its exciting!

I started Jazz Lips & Tulips so long ago (not that long ago, but it feels like an age!). So long ago that I didn't even know what I was interested in let alone going to study or what i wanted to spend the rest of my life doing (hell, I don't even know that yet! But at least im a step closer!) It has now dawned on me that this year is my graduating year, which is almost as scary as my student loan (and that's scary).

Soon, very soon my name is going to be my calling card as an artist/ creative/ professional, the only thing that's really mine. This is why I've chosen to re-brand from jazz lips and tulips to 'Eloise georgia mae'. Self titled, ooh yeah, fancy!

Here is how it's going to happen, first I'll change all my logo's (↑ isn't it fancy) and I'll give it about a month to let everyone know what's up and then I'll do a countdown until my URL changes.

Jazz Lips & Tulips has been growing recently, which is super exciting and I've got some equally exciting things coming up this year.

Thanks to those of you who have stuck with me from the beginning and also those who have just joined! Heres to a bunch more years with you lovely people!

Zana products studio tour

A few months ago via instagram i stumbled onto the feed of Cape Town based creative brand Zana. Born out of a love for color and textiles Zana makes the most lovely products ranging from cushions to purses (which i kid you not, are to die for!) and have such a way with color, pattern and typography, which as y'all know is right up my alley!

They have just moved into a new studio in Woodstock where they do their own sewing, screen printing and "making and many other things dreams are made of." How did y'all start out?

We started Zana as an online store with a small idea and some midnight sewing. Before we knew it we had a business! We wanted to create unique, modern and fun textile goods & introducing them to the handmade market both locally & internationally. 'Handmade' and small creative businesses are appreciated and supported in Cape Town, which makes it a really great place for us to be.

How long have you y'all been creating such goodness?

We have been running for a year. We tested the water in 2012 & in 2013 gave it our full energy.

How large is your team?

We have 6 people on our team. The co-founders Sue, who runs production, & Robyn, who runs the creative side, are a mother daughter team. We also have Melissa who joined us a few months ago & she is an interior designer. Our 3 Zimbabwean sewing & cutting ladies are Nelly, Yokai and Tendai.

Ponsonby in black and white

These photos have been sitting on my computer for months, staring at me, promising that they were great but never really following through. Absence makes the heart grow fonder apparently. I feel like black and white photos are beautifully simple, nothing to distract from the shapes and planes of space.

Ponsonby is the neighborhood where i work, its the trendy neighbourhood that houses all the New Zealand designers with a healthy mix of strange convenience stores, incredible cafe's and flower shops. Always bustling.

Remember those peg leg trousers that i posted about the other day (here). Yeah, the ones that im totally obsessed with. Them. Well these are them and i'm in love, they were like $10 including the 2 other pieces that made up the terrible 3 piece 80's suit. I thank my lucky stars that i happened upon them. Im not an accessoriser, never have been, i like simple clothes that fall well, these pants fall into that category and every category that encompases greatness.
