Minneapolis Nights is my tribute to Prince on, today, the 10th anniversary of his passing. In the style of a long-format, late-night radio show so expect deep cuts, alternative versions and unreleased demos, freed from his famed Vault, with lyrical themes including mortality, loss, betrayal, bitterness, regret, heartbreak, unrequited love and longing...

Believe it or not, I started this mix when he was still alive in late 2015. I was just incorporating a song from what turned out to be his final album, when the tragic news occurred and I dropped the idea. I couldn't bring myself to listen to much of his music over the following few years and then it seemed like his estate would be carefully archiving and releasing the treasure trove of unreleased songs from his Vault, rendering projects like this pointless. However, hindsight shows that has not happened as they continue to fumble his legacy and let down us fans with cancelled projects, half-baked re-releases and a focus on things fans don't really need, like a stage musical!. The looming significance of today's date, marking a decade since he took the elevator up, sparked me to pick up this project and finish it. I have made very few changes over the original - just adding one newly leaked track, changing the version of another, and replacing a third with a better quality source.

The most difficult thing about a mix like this is curation and dealing with an artist known for being one the most prolific musical geniuses ever witnessed, with approximately 1,000 songs released over his career and a reputed 8,000 more sat in The Vault. A significant number of these have leaked in various qualities over the years, and groups of die-hard fans (ahem) have huddled in private groups to trade amongst themselves for many years. Choosing 20 tracks from this weight of material required a tightly focused concept and strict sonic, musical and lyrical rules to narrow things down as much as possible. Even then... well, you can see the subtitle "Volume 1" and draw your own conclusions about my future plans for this series!

For casual fans, you will not find the big 'hits' on this collection, and very little from his most famous run of albums at the peak of his fame for Warner Brothers. So what can you expect? A not for the faint-hearted, heart-wrenching ride through the depths of human emotion, including some of the most personal songs of his career, typically either unreleased or obscure alternative versions hidden away on fan-club only material and limited release Japanese singles! I tried to stick with laid back muscial energy, although had to allow for some of these emotional tracks to reach their peaks. I have a fondness for spoken word breakdowns like you hear in many classic R&B tracks.

This mix starts the way he his career ended - his final masterpiece, Revelation, from his final album - which now has an ethereal quality as his final message to those of us still somewhere here on earth. There is, of course, incredible musicianship throughout, such as a sublime fretless bass solo on Dreamin' About U, top drawer guitar work across many songs and several beautiful piano and voice pieces. But it is the vocals that really stand out here, with range, power and control rarely seen - for example, the raw emotion on With This Tear, a demo made specifically for Celine Dion's voice. There is the touching lament at the death of the Smashing Pumpkins keyboardist and long time collaborator, Jonathan Melvoin, on The Love We Make. Old Friends 4 Sale is the very first bootleg I ever heard and is still, maybe, my favourite song of all... despite being, effectively, a diss record to Jam & Lewis! Then there is the late-career Grammy winning Call My Name. Of course, there is the the definitive demo version of Nothing Compares 2 U, an all time classic made famous by Sinead O'Connor's cover (without permission!). Listen out for a shockingly personal takedown of (allegedly) Carmen Electra on the I Hate U Extended Version, the additional lyrics getting so uncomfortable that you wonder if you should be listening in at all. And, of course, we end on the only song that could see this mix out - how did he know he would exit this world in April all those years ago?

25 YEARS AGO ON THIS VERY EVENING, THE JUNGLIST MASSIVE TRULY TOOK OVER!!!!!

As the show that literally gave birth to J.Bo Tapes, I couldn't miss the opportunity to give a Special Dedication to this monumental occasion - 9pm on a Thursday night in the summer of 1995 and the world was changed by BBC Radio 1 broadcasting the first national drum & bass show, One In The Jungle.

I previously talked about the significance of this two week period at the end of July 1995 in my previous throwback post (LTJ Bukem's 1995 Essential Mix) and it worth repeating here. Despite jungle raves growing hugely in scale and the genre selling enough records independently every week to get into the pop Top 10, the scene was largely marginalised and even vilified by the mainstream press and relegated to illegal pirate radio station in large urban areas for promotion. Despite this, these irresistible chopped and sped-up breakbeats with earth trembling basslines continued to spread and took over youth culture across the land.

Radio 1's controller realised they were out of touch and listeners left in droves to the pirates, damaging their credibility to claim to be the youth station of the nation. Modelled on Kool FM's pirate output, these 6 one-hour episodes (along with an unbroadcast pilot featuring DJ Ron) were aired in summer 95 and were so successful that One In The Jungle was commissioned to run throughout 1996-1998 in a primetime weekend slot as an equal to the existing dance and rap music output (shout out Westwood). This second run also coincided with BBC Radio launching their pioneering RealMedia streaming service in 1996, and eventually the catch-up on-demand option that defines our world today. This just increased drum and bass's reach around the world as the service was global and helped make the scene's leading DJs internationally famous and in high demand. One In The Jungle, of course, eventually morphed into the award winning Fabio and Grooverider show from 1999-2012, meaning that from being sidelined, the scene became nationally broadcast for 17 straight years on the nation's number one radio station, as well as being streamed around the world, all on the back of this little experimental one hour show. Its importance is obvious.

Years later it was just as vital to this site - a nostalgia pang led to me searching the net to find digital copies of the first few shows only to draw a blank. Knowing that the genuinely historic first three episodes had been safely stored in a box in my parent's attic for 15 years, I knew that I had to get them, rip them in high quality, and set up this site so others could download and enjoy them as much as I knew I would, to spread the cultural legacy of those times. The reaction was so positive to the initial three (and I was so excited with some of the other tapes I spotted in those boxes) that I started archiving other classic tapes and posting on this blog. I tend to prioritise either mixes that I remember changing my whole musical outlook, my life, as well as ones that nobody else seemed to have for the J.Bo Tapes exclusives!

I very proudly contributed to the One In The Jungle Archive project too, but that sadly ended in 2013 incomplete. Thankfully, the project in its final state has been kindly mirrored here if you want to download more of these historical mixes. The project to create a full set of every show ever transmitted is still active, and if you have a dusty old tape somewhere with one of the missing shows on it, please holla!

It is safe to say that the impact of One In The Jungle can still be seen clearly across the world with plenty of active forum chatter still try to figure out all the tracklistings, the still unknown exclusive dubplates dropped on the shows, several sites still trying to complete the complete digital archive of all the shows and 100s of mixes posted to Mixcloud and YouTube for all to enjoy forever.

Essential Mix. Ever... Turns. 25!!!

I just can't believe it.

Exactly 25 years ago (to the minute), the world was forever changed. BBC Radio 1 broadcast a DJ mix on the absolute cutting edge ("what a tender expression") of UK dance music on the legendary Essential Mix show.

Drum & Bass had been growing (and dividing) at an Incredible pace over the previous few years but was often dismissed, even attacked, by the mainstream media. It is also strange to think about now, but back in the early 90s, the internet barely existed... so there was no streaming, no downloading, no researching new music. New strands of music were created, existed and morphed in small bubbles of producers, DJs and dancers. People became aware of them at a very small number of clubs in a small number of cities, or through local pirate radio stations. If you were outside of one of these broadcast areas, you either struggled by trading mixtapes, or were just not aware of what was happening, what was new. This was certainly true with this emerging genre, but that all changed in the summer of 1995 when it finally forced its way out of the underground and into the national consciousness before taking over the cities, streets, shops, bars, clubs and cars of the entire country.

In an historic two week period, that gives me tingles to this day to think about, this revolutionary UK style got this show broadcast nationally, then One In The Jungle started its pilot run the following weekend, followed by Goldie's (still absolutely) Timeless album being released at the end of the July. Just wow, what a time to be alive!

The significance of this mix cannot be overstated. A lot of the success of drum & bass over the next two decades, the crossover appeal, the TV adverts, the movie soundtracks and so on, can be traced back to this mix winning over the largely house and techno audience of Pete Tong, with this emerging 'softer' sound of so-called 'Intelligent D&B' that Bukem pioneered and led. I believe this gateway mix opened many, many people's ears to the broken beats and basslines, as well as alerting the major labels and general buying public to explore the wider scene.

Bukem himself continues to see incredible success across the world with countless mixtapes and compilations released on his own Good Looking label as well as endless touring all over the world. Let's not forget he also made the, unthinkable at the time, breakthrough of getting a residency at the legendary house superclub Cream (which you can listen to on J.Bo Tape #8), which again can be traced back to the impact of this mix. Whatever you may personally think, the whole D&B culture owes a lot to Bukem and this essential Essential Mix.

I have chosen to use Mega.nz as my host as they do not use pop-ups or dodgy ads, keeping you downloaders safe online. I thoroughly recommend them, and if you want to create an account and give them a try then please click here.

Hopefully they will stay online for more than a few weeks this time and nobody bothers to report them - remember that I make no money from this site or the tapes, the sole purpose is to record the rich cultural history of UK dance music, and to promote the original DJs, MCs, recording artists and record labels. At the turn of the millennium, The Social bar on Little Portland street was just starting its journey towards becoming a Legendary London Institution, and my favourite spot for nearly 20 years!

One of the early residencies was Spread Love, a Tuesday night hip-hop party created by residents DJ Yoda, DJ Go and James Lebens. It became an essential part of the scene, anyone who was anyone passed through when in town - despite the horrific Red Stripe hangovers, I still have strong memories of legendary nights with Ugly Duckling, MC Paul Barman, Maya Jupiter, Edan and many more... There were also plenty of displays of mind blowing turntablism within these four walls, as DJ Yoda and DJ Go's links to the DMC World DJ Championships led to a revolving door of the best DJs show their skills

Last week, DJ Yoda rediscovered some Video Cam footage of the Halloween 2000 party where Peanut Butter Wolf and Madlib came through and rocked the party Stone Throw style. It was fun trying to spot myself and many others in this video, great memories man...

No sooner had we found a new filehost and uploaded all our historical tapes for you to enjoy again, than they started being taken down one by one.

In the current climate, it would not be wise to keep fighting this, and it would not be fair to use one of the dodgy filehosts that would bombard you downloaders with pop-ups and potentially dangerous malware. For that reason, the downloads will not be available for the foreseable future.

However, the Mixcloud streams should still be there for you to listen to muscical history!

It has been a whole year since J.Bo Tapes was a casualty of the high profile shut down of Megaupload! You must have all been very sad in the meantime, but never fear, here is some good news...

The process of re-uploading the entire collection to a new file host has begun and you will notice older posts being updated with new download links as they become available. It is a big job, so if you notice any problems with new these links, please leave a comment on the post in question.

Even better news - all of the J.Bo Tapes are also being uploading to MIXCLOUD for those that like to stream, whether it's at work, or on your phone, or wherever! So make sure you follow J.Bo Tapes on Mixcloud to listen to this history on there.

The process of re-upping the archive should be complete by the end of the month, and then we can start adding to it again with some new old tapes!

Disaster #2: All Mixtape Downloads Removed :-(

J.Bo Tapes is sad to report that we were struck by another disaster - this site's file-host, Megaupload, was seized and shut down by Federal Prosecutors in the United States this week. All files have been removed so none of the download links will work right now.

J.Bo Tapes will endeavour to find a new file-host and re-upload all the existing mixes. However, this may take some time as it is unclear how stable the remaining popular file-hosts will be in this climate. There are also not many that have an easy to use interface for you readers and that do not spawn a bunch of useless, maybe dangerous pop-ups. If anybody has any suggestions, please comment or email...

This mix from 1997 is typical of his sound - experimental, dreamy whilst retaining the hard edge that keeps dancefloors moving... and he smashed all the biggest raves from Telepathy to Fantazia. This is a rare treat for you guys because, as a general rule, I only used to tape the guest DJ hotmixes and not the half an hour of new music either side (and of course the Top 10 at Ten and the National Rave Guide!) because I just listened, bought what I liked and moved on. It put the UK's ever mutating breakbeat scene into the public eye for the first time opening the door for the bass that followed from UKG, Grime, Dubstep... Plus the show's popularity started BBC Radio on their path to launch national 'legal pirate' - 1Xtra. Wow.

But even more, it is the reason this very blog was created. Wanting to listen to some old mixes, I came across the brilliant One In The Jungle Archive - home of a huge collection of mixes from the show's history. However, the archive was (and still is) incomplete so I dug out the legendary first three tapes (shows from Goldie, DJ Rap and Roni Size) from my attic, digitised em and upload here. The rest is history.

Now a year later, I have gone back to digging and found another stack of 1ITJ tapes with at least a few of the archive's missing shows in there... Here is the first of these gap-fillers - a massive Brockie mix from the 1996 run of the show. A legend in the game and a long term favourite of hardsteppers everywhere, Brockie was one of the co-founders of the king of d&b radio - Kool FM - in 1991! 1 year, 25 tapes, 30 mixes, 26 DJs, 12 MCs later... 29 posts and several thousand downloads in... even 3 of my own mixes (1 old and 2 new)... and we still standing.

Thanks to everybody who has read the blog, downloaded a mix, mailed a link out, posted to a forum, left a comment, facebooked, twittered @jbotapes or just generally held it down over the past 365 days. I hope you are all enjoying what is essentially a personal project to digitally preserve my own tape collection for posterity.

If anyone is thinking of buying J.Bo a birthday gift, then something like this would do... oh, and of course, a cake is essential.

Here's to many more massive mp3 mixes to come... hold tight and watch the ride.

There ain't nothin' out here for you... oh yes there is - THIS!

I always said that if I made it to 25 tapes that I would release one of my own mixes from back in the day. I didn't think we'd make it but the support has been phenomenal over the past (nearly a) year with 1000s of downloads and even messages from DJs themselves happy at finding their long-thought-lost mixes here.

But we did make it, so here we are with J.Bo Tape #25... and I have selected a personal favourite from the vaults... J.Bo - SUMMER BASS II: universal music. Recorded when I was still a teenager (before I had status and before I had a pager) in the summer of 1997, this was my annual attempt at summarising the previous 12 months in drum & bass... and with Nightmare Side A focusing on the emerging techstep sound and Dream Side B on a more vocal/ambient/experimental tip, it does a pretty good job of that.

With the techstep sound coming to dominate drum & bass for many years, it is easy to forget that when it first came through, it was truly mind blowing. Every week another record would come out that sounded like nothing that had ever come before it...with the ever reliable Metalheadz and Prototype labels leading the charge. I mean, who remembers Adam F's hoover-bass on 'Metropolis'? Or the first time Dillinja's 'Threshold' made your nostrils and eyeballs vibrate at Blue Note? Or the first time you heard the break-switching produced onto the record itself (it actually upset some DJs who thought "hey, that's my job")? Or just the total insanity of Arcon 2's 'The Beckoning' (still one of my all time favourite records)? All that without even mentioning the other side of things - the abundance of high quality, warm bass and uplifting vocals coming from, amongst others, the Good Looking camp at the same time. 1996-7 was truly an amazing year in d&b history.

I think this tape had an initial distribution of only about 20 copies (haha... I wonder if anybody still has theirs?!?). So this is the first chance for a wider audience to hear the mix, my first attempt at crafting an actual Drum & Bass Mixtape, rather than just a Mix-On-A-Tape. Using the usual two turntables, mixer and tape deck, I also hooked up a sampler for this one - you can even see all the samples used in the full tracklisting! And before you ask, yes, I was spending too much time with hip-hop DJs, listening to Wu-Tang records and watching kung-fu flicks at the time.

What goes around, comes around...

As you can see from the Top 5 J.Bo Tapes on the left, the first of these legendary Thursday night Full Cycle radio shows has quickly become by far our biggest download to date. To reward the continuing support from the Bristol crews, here is another tape recorded from the never-forgotten Galaxy Radio six months later, in the classic jungle year, 1995.

Roni Size and Krust's supergroup Reprazent went on to became the most successful live act in the history of drum'n'bass. These radio shows pre-date that era when they were breaking the music locally whilst making names for themselves on the London underground. And don't worry - three more of these shows have been spotted in the J.Bo Tape archive and will be digitised, remastered and uploaded here in due course - follow J.Bo Tapes on Facebook, Twitter or RSS Feed to make sure you don't miss future releases...
