Going Blind Film Premier

On October 24th, JCAHPO is hosting a free, community premiere of the acclaimed documentary, Going Blind.

Invited guests that have agreed to participate include the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology, the Minnesota Lions Club, and the MN Low Vision Store. Two well-known, local ophthalmologists have also agreed to participate and will be hosting a question/answer session after the film and we anticipate having handout materials available for the audience to take home on eye diseases and low vision resources/products.

This free event will take place on Wednesday, October 24, from 6:30-8:30 pm at the Central Park Amphitheatre, 8595 Central Park Place, Woodbury, MN

Which Would You Rather Lose, a Limb or Your Eyesight?

According to a survey of 11,000 people from 11 countries (including the U.S.) conducted by Bausch + Lomb, 68 percent of us would rather lose a limb than lose our vision. Of those surveyed, 79 percent would rather lose their sense of taste -- and 67 percent would rather lose 10 years of their life than lose their vision.

Given that people apparently place such high value on vision, the survey’s other key finding that only about one-fifth of us get regular eye exams is kind of surprising.

The Virginia S. Boyce Humanitarian Award

The Virginia S. Boyce Service Award has been renamed The Virginia S. Boyce Humanitarian Award. It is presented from time to time, but not more frequently than on an annual basis, to ophthalmic medical technicians (OMT), preferably JCAHPO-certified, who have made outstanding voluntary public service contributions in the assistance of eye care and prevention of vision loss.
Any person may nominate candidates for the award, with appropriate documentation included to indicate worthiness for the award. Information must be received by May 1 of each year, with review and selection by a committee of the Foundation each spring and is made at the discretion of the Foundation Board of Directors. The recipient is invited to attend JCAHPO's Annual Continuing Education Program to receive the award; a small stipend is provided for travel costs. A person may receive only one Virginia S. Boyce Humanitarian Award in a lifetime.
