Blood Donation - 6th March (6th March, 2012)

JCI Cambridge is supporting the blood donor service in 2012 and you can join us by just giving up a little of your time to donate some of your blood!

Blood is something we all expect to be there for us when we need it, but surprisingly only 4% of us give blood. Many people would not be alive today if it wasn't for the generosity of blood donors.

Did you know...

The NHS needs 7000 units of donated blood daily
One donation is broken down into three live saving products
Donations are used to replace blood loss after accidents, childbirth or surgery and to treat people with blood disorders and those undergoing cancer treatment
Most people are eligible to give blood, you just need to be aged 17 to 65 (for a first time donor), weigh over 7 stone 12 (50kgs) and be in generally good health

You have received blood, or think you may have received blood, since 1^st January 1980
You are currently awaiting results for any tests undertaken by your healthcare provider.

In the last four months you have:

Had a tattoo, skin piercing or semi-permanent make up
Had acupuncture, unless this was done by the NHS or you have the appropriate certificate of accreditation

In the last six months you have:

Visited a malarial area

Speed networking is a bit like speed dating. You have a minute to pitch who you are and what you do to each person you meet. That's sixty seconds to make a great first impression!

You'll be given tips and advice on how to make the most of your networking opportunities with the chance to practice your pitch and meet every person in the room.

It's fast. It's fun.

It's a chance to meet some new people, make some good contacts and perfect your networking skills.

This short interactive workshop will provide you with tips, tools and techniques to help you present yourself, and your message, with confidence. Whether talking to customers, suppliers or staff... or indeed others outside the workplace. Our speaker, Kate Atkin, will ensure there is an element of networking during the workshop, so come prepared to move around and meet your fellow conference attendees.

About our speaker:

Kate Atkin set up Aspire 2 www.aspire-2.com over eleven years ago following a successful career with Barclays Bank. Specialising in communication skills and management development she now works with many different sectors including engineering, public and financial services. She speaks with energy drive & passion and ensures all her workshops are participative and fun - this will be no exception.

Author of The Confident Manager, Kate is a past winner of the JCI UK Public Speaking competition, a World Debating Champion and in 2007 won the UK & Ireland Toastmasters Speech Evaluation Competition, and reached the national finals in the impromptu speaking competition in 2008. In 2005 she was recognised as the most outstanding trainer by JCI UK and was nominated for Cambridgeshire Businesswoman of the Year Award. Yet she was a shy schoolgirl and never dreamt of being where she is now. Kate's tips come from her own personal experience and she hopes they will encourage you to make your own journey.

Welcome to the second national event of the year for JCI UK!

P&D Day is an event for all Local Presidents & Deputy Presidents to come together (along with the National Board) to meet, share ideas, learn & have lots of fun.

Saturday will kick off with a reminder of Roberts Rules of Orders for meetings which will of course be utilised during the subsequent JCI UK National Council meeting. This will be followed by awards training, a guest speaker & also plenty of opportunities to network. Tea and coffee (kindly sponsored by Costa) will be available throughout the day and a buffet lunch will also be provided.

Sunday will see Local Presidents & Deputy Presidents taking part in 'Local Leader' training. After a combined start separate sessions will be run both of which have been designed to allow current Presidents & future Presidents of local chambers to maximise their leadership potential & strengthen their respective local organisations. Again, plenty of tea and coffee (kindly sponsored by Costa) will be available throughout the day and lunch will also be provided.

JCI European Conference 2012 (13th June, 2012 to 17th June, 2012)

The conference motto “Enjoy…every first second” relates to the atomic clock which is situated in Braunschweig and provides the time of the day for the whole of Germany. In such an atomic clock the length of a second is deduced from the periodic vibrations of caesium atoms and transmitted directly, for example, to all radio alarm clocks and station clocks in Germany.

As a JCI member, you have the opportunity to attend several JCI conferences throughout the year. The two biggest are the European Conference and World Congress. JCI UK sends a large delegation to both. If you go along, you will:

see the big picture of JCI and learn how it works
bond with the people you’re travelling with
expand your network as you meet many international JCI members
make friends with open-minded, supportive people who will encourage you to reach your goals
have an enormous amount of fun.

Conferences offer high-quality training, lectures and keynote speeches (often on topics such as leadership, management and entrepreneurship).

They also lay on social events. During big conferences, different JCI countries host the evening parties. You could find yourself tasting sushi at the Japanese night, tucking into smørrebrød at the Danish party and slaking your thirst with sangria at the Catalonian evening.

Why Global Partnership?
Imagine a better world. A world with no wars, no poverty, no sickness. Now, how are we going to get there?

No single entity can answer the world's greatest challenges alone. The three sectors each have a unique and crucial role to play, and only through collaboration will we realize the better world we are working for.

At the 2011 JCI Global Partnership Summit, active citizens from around the world united with leaders of business, civil society and government to explore ways to work both individually and collectively to enhance grassroots efforts to advance the UN MDGs. In 2012, we're taking action to apply these powerful ideas to our countries, our communities, our backyards.

Through interactive discussions, workshops and case studies, JCI members, partners and participants will engage these concepts viewed through the unique JCI perspective as the leading global network of young active citizens.

Objective
The Summit will focus on arming active citizens with the tools and information necessary to impact their communities through targeted action and strategic partnerships.

Expected Results
The Summit aims to accomplish the following

Engage thought leaders from the three sectors to explore best practices in collaboration, leading the conversation with the unique JCI perspective
Highlight strategic partnerships and how they can be implemented at the local level to build a better world and advance the UN MDGs
Showcase stand-out projects from all three sectors to motivate and inspire active citizens to create positive change

Participants
The Summit is open to all members of JCI. In addition to JCI members, a number of UN officials, representatives of JCI's global partners as well as Global Compact companies will attend. Normally not more than 200 people attend so it is a great opportunity to get to meet and socialize with people you otherwise only see from a distance.

To make an impact in our local communities, we need to know how we can participate in and contribute to the public discourse.

This summit, Friday evening to Monday afternoon, will help participants understand how they can be a part of and make the most of public forums for discussion, local council and governments and the press.

The summit will among other look at the role of JCI in public life in Britan, how lobbying works, how to make an impact through PR and how to use public forums.

The summit will end Monday afternoon as Monday morning will be spent in the parliament together with representatives from our local communities. It is hoped that this relationship built on the day can continue at home and be a base for cooperation back in our local chambers.

JCI Know How Transfer at the European Parliament (7th October, 2012 to 10th October, 2012)

Join JCI members from all across Europe for an inside scoop on what's really going on at the EU.

JCI members get to learn from the experts in EU about how the EU really works, what's the big thing at the moment and how to lobby the EU. Members then shadow a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for two whole days, learning what they are doing in practice, seeing what's really going on.

In addition to the shadowing and the first day of lectures the evenings are filled with receptions and dinners so that participants really get to see what life in the EU capital is like.

You have to be a JCI member to participate at this event.

The event starts Sunday afternoon and continues through Wednesday with daytime and evening events. The price does not include accomodation.

Logo Concept

1. Year 2012 will be the year of dragon, according to the Chinese Zodiac. Coming out together with the dragon and the number of "2012" means the combination of eastern (the dragon) and western (4 digits) culture.
2. The dragon is the leader of 12-animal symbols in the Chinese zodiac. JCI is the leader of young entrepreneurs' associations, JCI Taipei is the leader of JCI local chapters in Taipei Metropolitan Area, and Taipei is the leading metropolis city in Taiwan.
3. A jumping dragon means an active leader. The dragon was drawn in Chinese calligraphy painting and in form of circled ribbon. The circle means "completion" - success and achievement.
4. 2012 is drawn by calligraphic painting too and was in form of colorful clouds. Clouds 2012 rises and accompanies with the jumping dragon going toward to JCI (in form of its official logo) and the World Congress. The whole picture presents to keep moving forward year by year. This idea is very similar to "Be Better" concept from JCI - always stepping toward a better world!
