What is Jersey City Liberty All Stars?

Jersey City Liberty All Stars is a competitive Cheerleading team sponsored by the Jersey City Department of Recreation. Teams travelled to the National All Star Cheerleading Champions in Orlando, Florida and competed against the top programs in the country.

Registration

Girls interested should be between the age of 4 and 18. Registrations are held at the Starlite Gym, and the child must be accompanied by a parent. A copy of child’s birth certificate is required.

Jersey City Election 2009 Results: Mayor Healy Wins

Mayor Jerramiah Healy is re-elected as Jersey City Mayor after getting more than 52% of the 30,000+ votes from yesterday’s elections. Second in the poll was Lou Manzo, who only garnered 26% of the votes, and was disappointed by the low turnout. Would it make a big difference for Manzo if more people showed up yesterday?

Jersey City Elections 2009: More Volunteers than Voters?

According to the Clerk of the Hudson County Board of Elections Michal Harper, the elections turnout this year for Hoboken and Jersey City are somewhat low, after travelling between two towns. Are there more volunteers out there than voters? Have you voted already? If you haven’t cast your vote yet, you still have a few hours left, as Polls will closed at 8PM tonight.

A few election incidents made the news today. This morning, there was a confusion at a polling location on Sip Avenue in JSQ area. At Public School 24 on Kennedy Boulevard, a poll worker, Karama Ball, was kicked out for using a cellphone, which is strictly forbidden inside the location.

Kentucky GRILLED Chicken is a new menu item from KFC, and we can get it for FREE! All we have to do is print the coupon from this website, and bring it to a participating KFC restaurants located in the US. How many KFC’s do we have here in Jersey City? I can only think of one, on Communipaw Avenue, and I’m not even sure if they’re participating or not. I tried calling them at (201)433-1151 but nobody’s answering.

According to the site (http://unthinkfc.com/), coupon is available for printing from 9am CDT 5/5/09 to 9:59pm CDT 5/6/09. Coupon is redeemable at participating KFC® locations in the U.S. from 5/5/09 to 5/19/09, excluding 5/10/09 which is Mother’s Day. There’s a limit of one offer per coupon, one coupon per person during offer period and it must be redeemed in person.

Sounds like a good deal to me.

Low-Flying Planes in Jersey City

Downtown Jersey City residents have witnessed planes/jets flying low across Hudson River, and some even evacuated their buildings. Reports say that these military jets “are part of a Department of Defense photo shoot and that there is no threat to the city.”

According to Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters, this event should be finished by 1030AM today.

Virus Alert: Conficker Worm Set to Strike Tomorrow - April 1st

Attention all computer users: I know tomorrow is April Fools Day, but this is no joke. A new virus named Conficker Worm has been reportedly set to be unleashed tomorrow, April 1, 200. Even news on TV reported this and gave some tips in case your computer is infected by this worm.

In my opinion, this is a dangerous virus because it hides itself like a spy and record your keystrokes to hack your password and personal information.

So be observant as soon as you turn on your machine, and make sure you know how to protect your PC from this malicious program.

What is Conficker.C Worm Virus

The Conflicker.C worm tries to take advantage of a problem with Windows vulnerability to quietly install itself. The worm also tries to spread by copying itself into shared folders on networks and by infecting USB devices such as memory sticks. The program automatically turns off various security settings built into Microsoft Windows. It seems to block users from going to major Web sites that provide anti-virus protection. It may also contain instructions for infected computers to contact a control system, somewhere out there in cyberspace, on April 1.

What Are the Signs that Your Computer Is Infected?

Conficker - once installed in your machine - disallows you to do things to protect your PC. So check if you:

Can’t access security sites
Can’t access Microsoft fixes pages
Can’t turn off computer normally (START > Shut Down)

Protect Yourself from Conficker Worm:

Update your Anti-Virus Definition File
Don’t share USB thumb drives and storage devices from untrusted/unknown systems or persons. PC viruses and worms such as Conficker infect USB thumb drives, picture frames, etc, once they connect to an infected machine
change password if you doubt your computer
disconnect from internet right away and scan/clean your machines
contact financial institutions if you feel your identity is compromised
don’t open any email attachments

Demolition Continues in Journal Square, Jersey City

JC Animal Control on Arnold Diaz’s “Shame On You” Segment

This story started last month on JCList Forum, when site member Morgan told her story about her pet cat that was allegedly dumped into the woods by Jersey City Animal Control.

The story spread around and made the newspaper couple of days later. And last night, JC Animal Control was featured in Fox’s Shame on You segment reported by Arnold Diaz.

When Arnold Diaz asked JC Animal Control Director/Supervisor Joseph “Joe” Frank about it, the latter said that dumping an animal in the park instead of rescuing it, is not his or the city’s policy. However, his staff already admitted to the allegation.

Morgan Metius: “I was hysterical. I was freaking out. I mean, we had a crazy snow storm, she’s never been outside.” upon learning that her cat was dumped into the woods.

Parks Director says a cat like Daisy would definitely be the meal ticket to these predators (referring to wild animals in the park)

Morgan's boyfriend caught the animal control dumping cats again in the woods. He took pictures from his cellphone.

Animal Control set up traps to bait Daisy

Animal Control was urged to setup bait traps to catch Daisy. According to the JCList post (see link first par.), Daisy was caught at 5:30AM the following day.

Companion Animal Trust founder feels that this is not an isolated incident

Carol McNicoll, founder of Companion Animal Trust: “I don’t feel that this is necessarily an isolated incident. I really don’t“. She feels that this is not the first time it happened and she’d love to see an investigation of the incident.

But when asked if the incident was isolated, the director said: “I hope so. I believe so.”

In addition, Joe Frank said that his department is already investigating the control officers but many feel that it should be done by a 3rd or an independent party to avoid any conflict.

Jersey City: Snow Greets Spring

The last day of winter brings snow this morning in Jersey City. It doesn’t accumulate, though, as the grounds are wet. Snow will not linger according to the forecast, but it will be cloudy and chilly throughout the day (temperature in the low 40’s)

TODAY: Rain and snow tapering off this morning. Decreasing cloudiness for the afternoon. High 43F. Winds NNE at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precip 50%.

PICS: Jersey City St. Patrick’s Day Parade

It wasn’t as sunny as last year, but this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade was a big hit — “roughly 70 groups marched along the parade route from Lincoln Park along Kennedy Boulevard to the viewing stand opposite the Loew’s Theatre in Journal Square…” according to the Jersey Journal.

It was fun being there in front of the Plaza - taking photos of the floats and groups and random people. Wanna see some badass brows and stache?

I saw old friends and former students as well. People were all smiling - adults having cups of beer, and children enjoying the mascots. Even pets were Irish for a day.
