It seemed only yesterday as I can still literally feel the leather ball between my shaking hands. I can’t seem to express the fantastic emotion I have long kept in my heart until I sunk that first practice throw from the hardly visible free throw line. My heart pumped wildly while my spirit relentlessly begged for more this time trying out the dreaded 30-foot quarter corner rainbow. The 2-year furlough from the hard court increased the odds of making the big count but I just tossed the ball anyway just to locate if the long shot memory back muscles are still there despite the stiffness and the post stretching pain. I know it’s just there waiting to be rediscovered and operate into what could be a squaring off with a long lost “love affair” with basketball.

Being gone for most of the part, I was requested by Bishop Luis R. Santos to lead the prayer before the game. Yes, I did say a very short but powerful prayer and deep inside I whispered to God to encourage me with an exciting game…and He did not fail me. I wasn’t really playing hard but I was playing well. After making an under goalie, Bishop Luis who was playing for the other team came to me in a huddle inquiring if I was practicing alone. Although it was not quite the exciting seesaw game I expected, we were gracious after victory. The second game was a mismatch in our favor.

The Scent of Leather
Mmmm…the scent of leather! The smell of that dark leather ball would not seem to go away with each release I make for the ring after the aim. But I never bothered to shake it off as I found the sweet familiar smell both endearing and hypnotizing as if luring me some more each time I make the practice shot. That light and soft bouncy “Wilson” indoor leather ball could really prevail on you to try it out on the actual game and find out if you still have both the form and the brawn to carry it around the court without catching your toe. The rusted coordination on top of squeaky joints would show instantly if you have the wrong ball for the comeback game of your life.

But this leather ball was different in a sense that it kept me agile and dominating despite being winded in between the breaks. It was to me a special piece of leather ball. I finally summoned the courage to ask, “Whose ball is this?” When the eyes of many pointed to the rightful owner, I then began understanding why this ball was so special as if egging me on to play basketball again and have fun with all the familiar faces I see during Sunday Service…to come to the fellowship reunion with the same guys who 10 years back gave me selective attention, company and encouraged me to hang on when I was new in church. The group that will always have a special place in my heart because we will always be literally young together on and off the court… The Young at Heart!


The Young at Heart
Headed by no other than one of the most reliable vanguards of the church, Brother Bob would always make the time for the weekend sport not only to catch up with very familiar faces but because it is always a special moment with Bishop Luis, Mr. Basketball and Mr. 3 Pointer himself and with the young boys club. The extreme cardiac moments of the games, the fun and laughter and even the eating binges with Bishop Luis and the Young at Heart kept me young and vibrant but haunted me to end as well when I was in Africa. Missing the group fun seemed like torment until I got back into the game. The mere thought of playing again kept me alive and wanting to see old friends who to me have become real blood brothers despite the long absence. Bishop luis, Brothers Bob, George, Mat, Jun, Jess, William, Roger, Basil, Cesar, Leo and the rest of the younger players who obligingly add some speed to the now slower games and whose names I can’t put together, always make my day.

Boys Just Want to Have Fun
So if you want to have fun while being spiritually encouraged and physically revitalized, you know where to find the Young at Heart. They are the male Achievers who stand up front of the Cuneta Astrodome stage during Sunday Service to give God the glory and the praise. Come join us for weekend basketball and smell that sweet leather in your hands. Like me, even the scent of Bishop Luis’ official NCAA indoor composite “Wilson” leather ball, keeps my blood pressure on the level and my spiritual sense keen while pushing my physical conditioning more intense. Mmmm…the scent of leather!

A celebration of its fruitful years in the afternoon of July 25, 2010…

The satellite church of Jesus Christ To God be the Glory in Luciada, Bustos, Bulacan, under the leadership of Pastora Sonia Bigcas, held its 19^th annivesary with more than 300 attendees who shared in the joy of this celebration. It was attended by brethen from other satellite churches, namely, Pastor Somer Bigcas, Pastora Gigie Ege, Pastora Vicky Navarro and Pastora Cecilia Ong.

The gathering was also supported by the main church’s representatives Elder Sherwin Naculangga, Sis. Patricia Morales, and Sis. Jackelyn Adornado who all witnessed the successful result of the daily mission of Luciada, Bustos Bulacan satellite church. The Anniversary Sunday Service was graced by Pastor Boy Navarro as the guest preacher, by Pastor Eddie Ong as the offertory host and by Pastor Ron Ege who sealed the event with the closing prayer.

The special occasion, with more than 30 visitors, was conducted in Ibayo, Luciada Bustos, Bulacan which is also the home venue of their Sunday Services. On that day, the ultimate icing on the cake was that God had added to them 12 souls who accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour and had displayed the understanding of the true Gospel by undegoing baptism.

The 4^th Year Anniversary of JCTGBTG’s Rodriguez, Rizal Satellite Church

“…And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved…” Acts 2:47

Once more, new souls were saved as the satellite church of Jesus Christ To God Be The Glory Church International in Rodriguez, Rizal celebrated its 4th anniversary in CJ Resort, Sabah, San Jose, Rodriguez, Rizal, in the morning of September 26, 2010. The venue was filled with 610 attendees.

With Pastora Mercy Francisco’s lead and with guest participants Pastor Jun Bacunawa and Bro. Norman Francisco, the celebration became a huge success through our Lord Jesus Christ. They were able to evangelize the Word of God to 142 guests while 78 of them proceeded to accept Jesus and were baptized in His Name.

The main message of the event is comprised in 3 powerful words: “God is able”, an assurance to Christians that nothing is impossible to God.

There are about 610 members who regularly attend the Sunday Services in Rizal being held in the following addresses:

Brainstorming…

Few weeks before the event, we were praying and discussing what would be the best topic that will suit the Yuppers. Money? Love? Family? Yes. But what is the one common thing that makes up the bottomline of today’s problems? It’s simply tension. A lot of us neglect the fact that tension brings stress to our lives and could lead us to sleepless nights, to become inefficient at work, to affect our relationship with our loved ones and most of the time, it could lead us to sickness. So we came up with the title, Tension Needs Attention.

Yuppers at Work…

Despite the limited time we had, by God’s help, we were able to hold series of meetings (plus a get-together time with our Yupper friends) to discuss the content of the program. Finally, after much revisions and deliberations, the program was approved and set to go! Thank God for the talented people who contributed their ideas for this event, whew!

Breaking the tension…

July 16th came and one by one, the tables in Kowloon House Restaurant Hall were filled-up by Yuppers coming from work and school. A little exhausted maybe but with excitement at the same time. Who wouldn’t be excited? This event only happens once in a while where you get to see and meet new faces and unwind with your church friends. This is also the time when we come together not as ushers, not as singers, not as teachers, not as healthcare aid but simply because we say, “I am a Yupper”.

Jamming session was a hit. Yuppers from different teams had fun singing with the band. There were even several attendees who bravely volunteered to sing on the spot. All for the glory of God! The crowd very much appreciated the singing and kept asking for more.

The talk, which was a huge chunk of the whole program, was delivered by Pastora Ernie Apostol from Las PiÑas Satellite Church. The drive of the talk mainly focused on the effects of tension to us mentally, emotionally and physically. She also pointed out the “Tension Busters” or the ways of dealing with tension. This is a basic teaching that we, Yuppers who are very much busy, most likely to forget in our everyday lives. Dealing with tension of course is different from how the outside world deals with it. For us Christians, we believe in the power of prayer and that God is just there who we could run to anytime. Aside from that, we have faith that upholds us and sustains us during this time of our lives.

In the middle of the talk, a group activity was done to give chance to participants on how they would deal with tension by creating and flying their own paper planes. This symbolizes how we deal with tension physically and emotionally and how far we could go inspite of whatever situation we are into.

The night ended successfully with a sumptuous meal and lots of music jamming, story telling and picture taking. We went home blessed and overjoyed as we were reminded of simple and yet important things in life that needs our attention.

They say that all it takes is a little love for us to give. The Yupper Organizing Committee and Bethesdan Team in cooperation with the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) organized a series of blood donation activity last June 26 and September 25, 2010 at JCTGBTG Church Center. These were conducted alongside PNRC’s First Aid Training Seminar. The day began by screening each donor before proceeding to the blood collection. There were approximately sixty church members and workers who qualified as blood donors.

Blood bags are transported to the PNRC blood bank where these are stored, preserved and processed into blood components for transfusion to save or prolong lives. Among those who benefit from the blood donation program are cancer patients, individuals who suffered from considerable loss of blood due to accidents, when giving birth or during major surgeries.

Apart from the recipients, blood donors also gain health benefits from this program. When relevant amount of blood is released, the body reacts by producing new blood cells which will result to better functioning of the organs and thus reducing the risk of critical illnesses. Aside from this, the donor receives a Blood Donor Card which they could present at any PNRC facility nationwide come the time that they would need blood. This entitles the card holder to withdraw one (1) bag for a minimal fee charged for the processing and screening of blood for infectious diseases. This processing fee may even be waived for every two (2) donor cards presented. The Interval for blood extraction is every three (3) months. Snacks and refreshments were served to donors after the process.

The Church Administration and the program organizers want to thank our church members as well as Gov. Wilma Amoranto-Sarino, second to the PNRC Chairman Richard Gordon, for being instrumental to this program’s productivity. The blood donation program not only helped save lives but also promoted the act of volunteerism within our church. This reflects our intention to give without expecting something in return but simply because we love, just like what Christ did.
