Technology does not replace books and writing on paper, it enhances it. I love technology, but, by no means, is everything I do tied to technology. I still love the feel of a pencil in my hand and spend time on paper. I love the feeling of holding a book in my hand and turning pages when I’m reading (although I do also like my nook!).

The two reasons the author finds that we lose creativity is Knowledge and the Need to Look Good. The more we know, the more experiences we have, the harder it is to think creatively – I have found this to be true. We also have a need to look good in front of our peers – we don’t want to look silly in front of them. I had not thought much about either of those reasons, but from my experience, I would say it is very true.

Number 1 is the most obvious way, show your students respect. If they don’t think you respect them, why would they every respect you? Overall a good list. I used many of these ways in my own class, though not all of them. Worth a read.

Out of the ones I watched, I liked the feature on creating your own glow sticks. Some of these experiments would be appropriate for Middle/High School students, but some may not.

“The underlying assumption is that we’ve thought through everything about the product, so there must be something wrong with the market, the customer, the economy, the timing, etc. In other words, it’s not our fault.” I believe that the previous quote is very true – if we change product to lesson or project and change market to school, customer to student, etc, it fits into how many teachers feel when something doesn’t go right. ‘There was nothing I could do.’ I’ve heard it before, heck, I’ve said it before.

Some wonderful ideas to help students make learning theirs. There were a couple of items in the list that stood out to me, ‘Deliver Instruction through Multiple Forms of Media’ and ‘Give Students Options’. I think it is necessary that students be instructed through various forms. I also find it is important that students are allowed to display what they learn in a way that fits them, at least to a point.

Fewer people are supporting President Obama’s education programs, who’d have guessed? It seems that many of those polled want to see better training for teachers and administrators, not to have them fired or schools closed. I liked this quote by John Simmons, the president of the Chicago-based Strategic Learning Initiatives: “Anybody experienced in running an organization as complicated as a school can see pretty quickly that the experience of the faculty and staff and administrators and principals all working together is a huge asset in improving a school.”

This is a pretty heavy duty method of making sure teachers are using the technology they are given. With the time and commitment that are put in by the teacher and district, it seems that the district wants to make sure it is not wasting money – I applaud them for that. My one question, maybe I missed it when I read the article, what about those teachers are are totally intimidated by technology? How are they brought into the fold?

Using Google Apps can save districts money and help their IT departments to better utilize their time to helping teachers. Some great examples in the article of school districts that have made the move. I use Google apps on a very regular basis on my own and have found them to be a great time saver.

Why do we do the things we do? I really like what Becky Fisher had to say in this post, “I love learning but I hate school as we mostly do it.” There are so many things we do, that I wonder why we do it. Does it help the students learn, or is it just the way it has always been done?

What If Middle School Works Best With Only One Teacher?
http://jtspencer.blogspot.com/2010/08/what-if-middle-school-works-best-with.html
A self contained middle school class is an interesting idea to me. I can see how it could work well, but I can also see how it might not work for some teachers and students. I personally would be all for teaching a self contained class, the one thing I would miss is the variety of students, but the ability to really get to know a group of students would be a huge benefit.
