Process of Analytical Thinking…

Analytical thinking is a systematic, methodical approach to breaking down complex problems or information into smaller, manageable parts so you can understand them, identify patterns, and arrive at logical, evidence-based conclusions* [H/T GOOGLE]

Analytical thinking is most definitely woven into this movie, as practiced by… Sheep LILY and Sheep MOPPLE…

EARLY one morning LILY (AKA the smart one) and MOPPLE (AKA the wise one) discover GEORGE outside of his trailer, Apparently DEAD**

We watch as Smart Sheep Lily leverages her Analytical Thinking skills to figure out WHO murdered GEORGE. WE (the Sheep) shall solve the crime!

Worth noting… Apparently, SHEEP have the ability to forget/erase any memory that they find painful, simply by counting to three and wishing it away.

Wise Sheep MOPPLE, however lacks this 1-2-3 ability (which makes him the WISE one). As the “storer /retainer of information,” his talents are especially helpful to “Detective LILY”.

And They’re Off to …

Leaving the safety and security of their meadow, they venture out to seek clues.

[Yes… the “fish out of water” motif is now in play]

LILY and MOPPLE are joined by an Elder Sheep, SEBASTIAN (the Elder/WinterSheep) who has “out-of-meadow” experience, apparently.

Hard Stop…

Case in point… When these detectives encounter a Road , LILY and MOPPLE come to a HARD STOP, whereas SEBASTIAN crosses easily.

…They first must conquer their FEAR of the UNKNOWN…

Ding! Yes as that element is woven into this journey.

Another Spoiler – Watch for it…

A funny beautiful sight gag moves the plot along as a chicken passes the two frozen in fear sheep and struts across the road (as in the joke why did the chicken…?)

Welcome to another Mr Pete Wow-Me about a movie that stirred up lots of memories. He had lots to say, so a two-parter is on tap.

A WowMe Story My Mother Would’ve LOVED (Part 1)…

Those of you with Amazon Prime Video have probably seen a “suggested” movie pop up called:

THE SHEEP DETECTIVES (2026)

Per Amazon MGM Studios:

In this witty, new breed of mystery, George (Hugh Jackman) is a shepherd who reads detective novels to his beloved sheep every night, assuming they can’t possibly understand. But when a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep realize they must become the detectives. As they follow the clues and investigate human suspects, they prove that even sheep can be brilliant crime-solvers.

“Starring” Hugh Jackman, it really is a “sheep-filled whodunnit” (per one review on IMDB).

Needless to say, the description alone had me thinking of my late mother… And while viewing, I felt as though she was seated next to me — with her unique laughter erupting at all the silly but true antics of the SHEEP and of some of the foolish behavior of all of the HUMANS.

Hugh Jackson plays GEORGE a simple, hard working Man who loves his flock and they love him.

Pause for a <<< REWIND<<< …

I like to pretend that they follow along, but they’re only sheep, says George.

Putting this movie in context…

Apparently, the Sheep DO understand George.

My mother, certainly understood me and my needs as I was born with a learning disability which we worked together on overcoming.

How? Through a shared love of the mystery genre (I was privileged to have discovered this at a young age too!).

While she was escaping into the literary works of Ellery Queen and Agatha Christie, I leaned into Scholastic’s Encyclopedia Brown and the Hardy Boys (older sis had Nancy Drew).

She intuited that the development of MY thought processes could benefit from this “whodunnit” genre.

And I got myself to slow down my thoughts in order to understand what I had watched/read/experienced — which allowed my natural curiosity and imagination to “kick in.”

To me, the discovering and recognizing facts and patterns of human behavior was an eye-opening. Then, I’d go to work pasting together various pieces of the puzzle to establish a complete picture… The “reality” with my mother spurring me on.

What were some of our shared experiences? Scroll down for an example at the end of this post. Now, it is essential now that we circle back to the focus of this WowMe: The Sheep Detectives.

Sometimes I get so excited that I …give away the story. Here I’ll highlight a few more things and then in a future WowMe, we can compare notes… Okay?? —Mr Pete

EARLY one morning a couple of Sheep —LILY (the smart one) and MOPPLE (the wise one)—discover GEORGE outside of his trailer, apparently DEAD.

Now this is where it gets tricky because sheep have no concept of death outside of the Mystery stories GEORGE has read to them.

…SHEEP believe that its their time to “PASS” they just go out to the pasture then the become a cloud in the sky…

Lily the Wise Sheep decides GEORGE has been murdered, thus there’s a crime needing solving.

And this is where my editor says “STOP NOW” — GO. WATCH. THE. MOVIE.

Clues Allowed…?

Sure, why not. This is about detectives, right?

Here are some observations that you can keep in the back of your mind (like I said, we’ll compare notes later).

• In their search for clues they have to leave the safety and security of their meadow
  (THINK of this as grown children leaving home for the first TIME);
• They first must conquer their FEAR of the UNKNOWN;
• THIS MOVIE reflects many of the Life Skills young adults (heck, all of us) need to develop when entering into the REAL WORLD

And so it was that Suit-in-transition, MEREDITH, found her way over-the-hill, for a mid-week, WESTSIDE adventure that included a walkabout with her friend (and mentor), Former Suit, KATIE.

Katie had been tipped off that… let’s just say, a visit was coming … but the why (??) was left a mystery. We’ll now pick up the story by the Shore, as WEST CLIFF beckons… Let’s follow along to see WHAT. HAPPENS. NEXT. –The Gang.

FADE IN:

EXT. WEST CLIFF

MEREDITH
Wow! This is… so nice!

KATIE
Yeah… the JUNE GLOOM magically disappeared shortly before you got here. You scored, my friend.

She smiles as she is gathering herself, which Katie notices.

KATIE
Lots on your mind, eh?

MEREDITH
Yes… but in a good way and … that’s not how its been, ya know?

KATIE
Yeah… I know…

MEREDITH
Weird… a part of me doesn’t want to jinx it by talking about it… yet…

They walk along silently for a bit.

KATIE
I think… I understand… When I… got started on the path to… my transition to a more… meaningful existence… er… uh… fulfilling perhaps that the word… It started with… noticing things I blew by before and then my mind kinda grabbed onto things that would lead me to other things and … off I was on this adventure uniquely mine…

KATIE
I’d get back to my daily routine and … never be able to articulate where I’ve been or what I discovered… I. JUST. DID.
And frankly speaking, felt hella better — wanting to DO AGAIN another day.

Meredith ponders.

MEREDITH
Exactly! That’s it…! Not the what but the HOW it impacts you and… is it EFFECT or AFFECT ?

…I like stimulates … motivates… triggers… heck… AWAKENS works, too!

KATIE
I like stimulates … motivates… triggers… heck… AWAKENS works.

MEREDITH
Ah… I like that… AWAKENS…

She pauses as she looks out toward outcropping of rocks with marine life. Katie follows her eyes.

Normally… I look at that… at them like I look at the surfers as we get closer to the lighthouse and that area… And I think… actually… I don’t think… They are just part of the background … of what makes THIS… so WONDERFUL.

Katie smiles.

MEREDITH
The other night… I found out that there are different breeds of seals and some more social than others and…

Stopping to watch.

MEREDITH
Totally makes sense… not all dogs are alike… Heck… KEE-RA… I’m so lucky he’s in my life.

Kee-Ra’s ready…

KATIE
We heart the Happy Puppy and so does GEAR GUY hubby.

With her head, she motions towards home.

MEREDITH
Good change of pace for him… hanging at your house getting his BRO-DUDE on…

They laugh…

MEREDITH
I guess… the point being… I’m never going to remember the types of seals… The person who shared with us… that’s her world. BUT… I will look at the seals and think… those are incredible beings who… play a role in making this person… HAPPY… She was so… animated telling the story that you felt something stir… can’t explain, but…

KATIE
My friend… You are definitely onto something… Keep going!

MEREDITH
Going? As in… you wanna hear more yammering or are you thinking longer term… like the journey I’m on…?

KATIE
Great question… and BOTH is my answer… I know there are “HEAR YOUR EARS” things for our “WALK-FEETS” sessions… Like today’s.
Love it. Want to be available whenever you feel the urge to fly-the-hill as there’s a lifetime of breakthroughs ahead which means even MORE Awesomer stories to share, ya know?

MEREDITH
AWESOMER…?!?

KATIE
You’ll pick up, if you haven’t already that I… er… we have our own language… Fortunately for me, Gear Guy enjoys playing along… You’re welcome to try…

She laughs.

MEREDITH
You know… Actually, that’d be fun and another welcomed diversion…

They continue to walk along, and then Meredith nudges Katie.

MEREDITH
Okay… I’m new at this, but… I sensed… like ALL CAPS “SENSED” that you got something else you’re noodling on.

She gives Katie a look and cracks herself up before continuing.

MEREDITH
… a PROFOUNDERMENT! That’s it… You’ve got a profound + wonderment to share?

[Note: “Profound” describes something of great intensity, depth, or significance. It applies to abstract ideas that require deep insight, highly intense emotions, or sweeping, thorough changes. And Wonderment is a noun that describes a feeling of surprised amazement, awe, and joy, often sparked by something beautiful, strange, or unexpected. KATIE
Wow! Quick learner, you are.

She fist bumps Meredith.

KATIE
Impressive, that mash-up word… And yeah… circling back around, when I say “KEEP GOING” it is related to YOUR JOURNEY.

Something I learned is that… the breakthroughs… the WOO-HOOs!! Will have a long lasting impact on your day-to-day… You’ll be operating on a sort of super-stoked level that you won’t be able to explain… NOR should you. Just enjoy the extra energy and…

MEREDITH
Keep going…?

KATIE
That’s the whole KOKO thing… KEEP ON, KEEPIN’ ON…!

MEREDITH
Gotcha.

So they continue to walk along in silence… taking in the sea breezes and views, when Katie starts laughing.

MEREDITH
Uh… Care to share with the class…?

KATIE
Sorry ‘bout that. Rather spontaneously… Something I saw my eyes just now… a visual of… PEARLS the cartoon…

MEREDITH
PEARLS BEFORE SWINE…? Pig? Rat?

KATIE
Yes, and… Did you see…? There’s a recurring one where one of ’em climbs a hill seeking wisdom from the guru at the top and the pay off is… always kinda silly…

KATIE
…AND very much a reminder that the WISE ASS on the HILL doesn’t have the answers… Nobody has the answers…
So JUST. KEEP. GOING !!

Meredith ponders.

MEREDITH
Ya know… Like… Sure… Why not?

Katie gives her look with a twinkle in her eyes. Meredith nods and smiles.

MEREDITH
It was… Something I wrote in my MUSINGS… AND… How I ended up here today, actually… The timeouts… The break-outs ARE essential… and I need to adopt more of that … Sure… Why not? mindset.

A smiling Katie nods and then a look comes over her face.

MEREDITH
What…?

KATIE
Something just popped into my mind…

Katie points towards the hills and beyond.

KATIE
There’s a thing called PRESCRIBED BURN… You’ve heard of it?

MEREDITH
From alerts as in… Not to panic, right?

KATIE
Yes, and… it’s a way for controlling invasive plant species, removing fuels like leaves and dead grasses while recycling their nutrients back into the soil… good for the ecosystem while… making it somewhat safer IF a real FIRE happens… less to fuel it… but…

Prescribed burns show the way…

MEREDITH
Ya going all SMOKEY THE BEAR on me now?

KATIE
Just… as a natureful analogy…

There’s a pause, as Meredith “sees her eyes” what Katie is getting at.

…So BREAK OUT SESSIONS are like prescribed burns…?

MEREDITH
So… BREAK OUT SESSIONS are like prescribed burns…?

KATIE
Helping you THRIVE... yes… better prepared for those… FIRES… if you will.

Meredith smiles.

KATIE
Been there. Done that. What’s essential…

MEREDITH
Is invisible to the eye… Right?

They fist bump.

Just then, a picnic bench comes into view.

MEREDITH

KATIE
Sure !

MEREDITH
As in… Sure, Why not?

They fist bump and head over to the table.

While Meredith is playing with her PAK, Katie has pulled out a coaster to scribble on…

AWARENESS is heightened from the breakout sessions… which triggers CURIOSITY… and INGENUITY…

KATIE
You operate on a way higher level… With WAY more ENERGY… And that is why I highly encourage you to grab onto the “SURE, WHY NOTs?” of which you speak.

All smiles, Meredith withdraws a green and yellow package from her PAK.

MEREDITH
Ta.. Dah!!

And so it was that RC the STORYTELLER was intrigued by the pin design Happy Barista / Uber Driver KIMBA unveiled — agreeing to FIELD TEST plus be a sounding board. Let’s follow along to see WHAT. HAPPENS. NEXT. –The Gang.

EXT. WEST CLIFF

RC the GREMLIN / STORYTELLER has taken on the role of unconditional listener as KIMBA the Happy Barista / Uber Driver describes how she conjured up the “Yosh! Westside” pin. However, their “walk-feets” excursion was disrupted by the persistent pinging of Kimba’s mobile.

RC points to a shady spot and motions for her to flip-open her phone and deal with it.

Giving her some space, he studies sea animals in the distance. However, sensing a disturbance in the Force, he redirects his attention.

RC THE GREMLIN
Uh… You okay, my friend?

KIMBA
Crap! I did it again…

RC THE GREMLIN
Yes…?

KIMBA
I’m supposed to give Auntie a ride. Totally spaced…

RC THE GREMLIN
Well, its understandable. Just… hurry along and when Auntie’s not looking, slip one of those fine pins into her pocket or pack or purse… whatever she’s carrying.

…It’ll get her curious and then you can share some of what you shared with me… another set of ears… Plus… looping her in may score you an empathy card.

Looping in Auntie is a smart move…

As he’s talking, they’ve already made a beeline for Swift Street to hurriedly get to Kimba’s Uber mobile. The walk turns into a light jog.

RC looks up and smiles. On the opposite side of the street just so happens to be former Suit KATIE.

RC THE GREMLIN
Check it out…

KIMBA
You go. Tell he what my deal is and that I’ll catch you guys later.

RC THE GREMLIN
And you… follow the GP… Share with Auntie. Cool as a cucumber…

KIMBA

She turns and continues her jog while he calls out some final counsel.

RC THE GREMLIN
Breathe and… just breathe. And remember… What will be WILL be.

Somehow the message gets through as a thumbs up acknowledgment is seen.

RC THE GREMLIN
[to himself]
Yeah… go have fun with Auntie…

Redirecting his attention to Ms Katie, he remarks.

RC THE GREMLIN
That’s not the look of someone who played beach golf. Something’s up…

RC ponders his approach (selecting a diagonal street crossing as engage, NOT-Startle is the goal).

Even then, Katie is so in her own world that he literally bumps her.

RC THE GREMLIN
Whoopsie! My bad…

The sound of RC’s voice seems to awaken her… diverting her attention BACK to the present. She smiles.

KATIE
Oh… Hey you…!

RC THE GREMLIN
Greetings, Ms Speedy! Where ya heading?

KATIE
Just out for a WALK FEETS break…

He gives her a look.

RC THE GREMLIN
Seems to me… Something’s got ya, eh?

KATIE
Yeah… I’m looping a bit** so…

RC THE GREMLIN
…Time to… Yeah, I get it.

**What we’re not seeing is Katie visualizing how SHE’d set up the bread workshop.

Strategist Katie…

But that vision is also intermingling with her current concerns of (a) keeping her sourdough starter “alive”, and (b) how to port what she learned to the home environment to actually bake luscious boules of bread –as lots of gaps in knowledge… acknowledged.

We are keeping tabs on our former Suit and that’s how we know these thing. Now let’s continue the story. -LPs

RC switches to his STORYTELLER persona.

And just like that “SNAPS FINGERS”, Katie’s mood shifts and there’s extra bounce in her step.

KATIE

And it started on Monday evening as I settled into surf/scrolling online and what I saw… Well let’s just say I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share on my eclectic FEED.

Yup! From 6pm to 9pm, what I saw had me smiling inside while sharing away. And then somewhere along the line, my mind’s eye conjured up a long ago visual…

A few months ago, in my senior living complex (HERITAGE VILLAGE), I was cleaning the Community Room (a common area available for use by ALL the Residents) when I was approached by a fellow resident. Instead of offering any assistance in my mission, she chose to ridicule me for my efforts.

…WHY are you doing that ??? WE have people who are PAID to do that!!!

I just shook my head and continued sweeping while thinking in silent thoughts:

…If you have to ask, you would NEVER understand the ANSWER…

My WHY (AKA “The Answer”)…

Let’s start with my source of inspiration — from Japan. Through my studies, I learned:

“In Zen Buddhism, the task of cleaning is one of the most important training for mind purification and physical well being…

For the monks, cleaning is their daily duty. You may see them beautifully polishing the wooden floor like a dance performance.”

• Cleaning is the Purification of our inner and outer world.
• Cleaning is as important as doing meditation and yoga to our soul.
• Cleaning is connected to the energy of abundance, prosperity, worthy, love, joy, bliss.
• Cleaning is a sacred task.

Embedded in my brain is Robert Baden-Powell’s most famous and enduring quote—often considered the ultimate summary of the Scouting ethos:

Try to leave this world a little better than you found it.

Notable…

Pay it Forward…

I’ve always liked this concept.

Pay it forward means responding to a person’s kindness or good deed by performing a generous act for someone else, rather than repaying the original benefactor. It creates a ripple effect of goodwill and serial reciprocity throughout a community.

INT. COMPANION BAKESHOP ON MISSION

It just so happened that while RC the GREMLIN / STORYTELLER and the WANDER / WONDER (WONDER / WANDER) Kat, MR SQUEEK were hanging out at the Sourdough Baking Mecca known as The Companion, in breezed their frequent driver and all around-pal, Kimba.

She smile and nods — motioning for them to wait a minute (holding up a finger), as she places her order.

RC and Mr Squeek follow her with their eyes.

RC THE GREMLIN
She’s got … that look…

MR SQUEEK
Yeah… perhaps…

RC THE GREMLIN
A DING! happened… that’s my guess. When she… the magnets… the alternate DUCKIN’… Remember?

MR SQUEEK
Vaguely…

Kimba comes back with her treats and motioning to a chair, the guys nod.

So she settles in. Takes a sip and engages in small talk.

Mr Squeek seems actively engaged. RC’s mind is elsewhere. Something about Kimba’s SATCHEL-PAK has caught his eye.

Eye-catching…

Mr Squeek gives him a nudge while whispering.

MR SQUEEK
Dude, stare much?

Kimba follows RC’s eyes and laughs.

KIMBA
I WAS… saving THAT for the big unveil, but what the heck…

Reaching for the PAK, she continues.

KIMBA
It’s Show-THEN-Tell time !!

She’s got RC’s attention but, now it’s Mr Squeek who’s distracted and is now following one of the COMPANION employees outside.

RC THE GREMLIN
In the words of JAR-JAR… How rude!!

Kimba gives him an eye and shakes her head.

RC THE GREMLIN
Sorry… that probably messed with you a bit.

He notices Mr Squeek has taken a few steps back into THE COMPANION, and is waving his RAZR while also doing some pointing.

KIMBA
Squeek Speak for TTYL?

RC THE GREMLIN
Something like that — the Talk To Ya Later slash Ping Ya Later…

KIMBA
Gotcha!

RC THE GREMLIN
He maxed out on his hang time. Good session, but a wanderer’s got to…

KIMBA
Wander… I get it. So, about this…

She points to the pin he noticed, while also extracting a baggie from her PAK. Spreading several on the table with requisite nail file.

KIMBA
I showed you… right?

She picks up one of the pins and gently removes the blue plastic film.

RC THE GREMLIN
Saw that trick somewhere… Could’ve been you or Lady Katie with her Duckin’ acrylics… Been a while.

RC, having extracted the blue film on one of the pins is playing with it in his hands.

KIMBA
You like?

RC THE GREMLIN
Your YOSH PELLY dude at the SHORE representing the WESTSIDE… Perfect combination. Tell me about… The size. It feels like…

KIMBA
One and a half square… For a pin? I’m like on the fence… but then again, I knew it needed field testing.

RC THE GREMLIN
How does it compare to that acrylic magnet version?

Kimba opens up her RAZR and pulls up an image.

KIMBA
Great question. Magnet is slightly bigger. My thought is to see it more on backpacks and messenger bags and…

She pushes a bunch of the fresh pins towards RC.

RC THE GREMLIN

He pauses to study and then attaches one to his SATCHEL PAK.

KIMBA

RC finishes her sentence.

RC THE GREMLIN
Potentially… Suitable for the office, eh…?

He cracks himself up and she joins in…

KIMBA
Yeah, something like that.

RC THE GREMLIN
I feel… there’s a story…

KIMBA
My deal with STICKER-MULE?

Shifts to his storyteller persona.

RC THE STORYTELLER
Yes, and…

He’s motioning for her to tell him more.

KIMBA
Running with a hunch right now and… bumping into you guys… HERE… perfect for FIELD TESTING… It’s just…

Now an alert hits her mobile.

KIMBA
See? I’m on the clock… And that’s a ride request, so…

RC THE STORYTELLER
Story can wait. Run along, my friend.

KIMBA
I DO want to run it Katie. She around by any chance?

RC THE STORYTELLER
Better luck later… Maybe after you wrap up your driving for the day, as I know they’re off on some kind of adventure… maybe… golf …
Ah actually… I think…beach golf… something… like that.

KIMBA
Noted.

She packs up and heads for the door. Stopping abruptly, she circles back.

KIMBA
Whatcha doing later…?

RC THE STORYTELLER
This day…? Well, figured later I’d crash their date night… Otherwise, I’m flexi-guy, so…

KIMBA
When I get done, you wanna WEST CLIFF-it ?

RC gives her the Spock eyebrow.

KIMBA
Learning from our mutual pal, KATIE, that I need to hear my ears the story of… Helps both of us PLUS… I can smooth things out before I unveil to her and the GEAR GUY.

RC THE STORYTELLER
Let’s do it! PING Me when you’re ready, okay?

KIMBA
Will do!

She jogs to the door.

RC THE STORYTELLER
Andale, Ms Kimba! Go means Go!

Kimba replies.
KIMBA
C-ya when I c-ya!

And with that, UBER DRIVER KIMBA moves on with her day (shift), while a curious RC laughs to himself.

RC THE STORYTELLER
Can hardly wait…

The story continues. Please enjoy this is the next chapter  of  my life in the Middle of the Mob  ! —The Gang

Note: This should be about 14 to 19 minute read as we did a double-episode (though your mileage may vary)…

My first job after graduating high school was as a teller at World Savings and Loan. Remember that prehistoric institution? Did you know that at the end of 2004 the direct cost of the S&L crisis to taxpayers was about $124 billion? Now I’m not giving the mob any kudos but, back in 1963, I’ll bet the amount of money the mafia stole from taxpayers was peanuts compared to that.

Anyway, I started as a teller and worked my way up to account department manager and was finally promoted to secretary to the president. My parents were proud of me and so was I.

While I was working my way up the ladder at World Savings, Nicky Salatto had been drafted, serving time in Japan with the Marines for a few years. While stationed there he spoiled himself with tailor-made suits and shirts. After his tour of duty, he was honorably discharged, that being one of the few honors he ever received.

We met again at Rocco’s Inn, a popular neighborhood bar. I was eighteen and Nicky was twenty-one. Now it’s one thing to be good looking but you put all those good looks, the dark hair, big blue eyes, and olive complexion, in a deep blue suit with a tailored, hug-your-waist light blue shirt, opened at the collar and it’s enough to make you faint. I couldn’t take my eyes off him and he noticed.

Dancing with his body plastered against a friend of mine, he winked at me over her shoulder. When Sabina returned to our table I leaned in and whispered in her ear, “He was flirting with me while you were dancing with him.” Sabina, tipsy, just shrugged and said, “That’s cool. Go for it, Sami. He’s with a different girl every night anyway,” as she took another sip from her drink.

When he asked me to dance, he immediately tried to press in close, but I pulled away and kept a respectful distance between us. His head nodded as a slight smile spread across his lips as if to say, “Okay you want to play hard to get?” He just stared into my eyes and I stared right back for the longest two minutes of my life. Then he said, “You look familiar; do I know you?”

“Well if you call a short double ski ride around Ciron Lake, when you didn’t even ask my name, knowing someone, then yes… I guess you know me.”

“Wait, I remember. You’re “jail bait,” right?”

“Well, maybe back then. Now, I’m just “trouble,” I said smiling. “I don’t remember your name,” I said, lying.

“It’s Nicky… Nicky Salatto. And yours?”

“Sami… Sami Carracci.”

And so, it began. At first, he just phoned me every day for about a week, and then asked me out on our first date. I remember it was summer and I had the greatest tan; to show it off I wore a white top and skirt.

Military service was Nicky’s excuse for not having a job or a car and that seemed logical to me so I didn’t mind that I borrowed Mom’s car to pick him up. He suggested a local drive-in for hamburgers and fries. Okay, so he wasn’t the romantic type but he did manage to pay the tab that night.

We talked all night, about my family, about his family. He was one of eleven, three sisters and seven brothers. He laughed as he told me about all the screaming and fighting that went on in his home, the worst between his mom and dad.

“I’ll never forget the time my mom hit my dad over the head with a frying pan. I must have been about six. She found out he was cheating on her with a neighbor across the street and chased him around the kitchen table with me holding on to the back of her dress to try to slow her down.

“She’s screaming, ‘You had to be with Rosa, with Rosa of all people?’

“‘You donna know whata ya speak,’ Dad yelled back at her.

“I was terrified as the blood ran down his cheeks. It was brutal. It’s comical now, you know?”

He hesitated then confessed, “I think you should know right off the bat, my older brother, Frankie, has already served time in prison for assault and drugs charges.” The confession shocked me, but he was not his brother, so I dismissed it.

Nicky’s father was a barber and had his own shop just up the street from where I grew up. As a young boy, he used to go to his father’s shop and help him sweep the floor and do odd jobs that his dad made clear were “never done right.” He went on and on as I nodded my head and tried unsuccessfully to suppress the memory that surfaced.

When I was about twelve, I used to walk past that barber shop to go swimming at a public park across the street. There was a boy working in that shop around fifteen years old that used to stare at me when I walked by. Way back then, I told my sister and cousin that his eyes were evil and he gave me the creeps. That boy… was Nicky.

When I drove him home that night, we sat in front of his house, not saying a word. His eyes were burning a hole through me when he reached across the seat and began stroking my hair. I felt my stomach suck in automatically like it does when you drop down the first hill of a roller-coaster.

Then he gently put his arm around my shoulder and slid next to me, lifted my face and placed his mouth on mine. I knew immediately: this was the one man I could have left my family for, the man I could have left my religion for, the man I would have given my soul to that night if he asked… but he didn’t.

To this day, I still can’t explain the hold he had on me. Maybe it was just raging hormones, but I knew this was the man that I had to have in my life.

We dated for three months before we got engaged. I never let him screw me, no matter how hard he tried. Poor guy, walked around with a bulge in his pants for months. Believe me I wanted him too, my panties were always wet.

He proposed to me over a large sausage and pepperoni pizza at Pauli’s Pizza Parlor on 38th Street and we married three months later.

CHAPTER 6 – SEX

Now, you have to understand that Mama was very shy and modest, never told us anything about sex when we were growing up. I learned about menstruation from Eileen, who, at age 28, got pregnant with her boyfriend (the detective―my brother-in-law―Sean O’Shay) of ten years and had to get married. It destroyed Mama and she cried for days. So, she made up her mind to have “the talk” with me and my sister Gina, before we got ourselves in trouble. We were both in our teens at the time. She led us into the bathroom, closed and locked the door, saying she had “something very important” to tell us. “I never talked to your sister Eileen about this and I know now it was a mistake,” she said, coughing and clearing her throat. Her face turned candy-apple red as she passed on her sage advice.

“Don’t do it!”

Our eyes quickly slid sideways toward one another, then back to her. We nodded our heads to assure her we understood. Her head nodded too, looking first into Gina’s eyes then into mine to punctuate the importance of the moment. She unlocked the door and walked out. We buried our heads in the bathroom towels to stifle the laughter.

The only other time Mama talked to me about sex was after I married Nicky. But, let me back up. You see, we had no money for a honeymoon, our wedding night was at the Landon Hotel, part of my parents’ wedding gift to us. Nicky rushed into the room, leaving me standing at the door. I buried the words “meal ticket” into a coffin of denial created by my mind in an ever-growing graveyard full of them.

“Aren’t you going to carry me across the threshold?” I asked.

“You’re joking, right?” Nicky said.

“No, it’s a tradition. Come on.”

He swept me into his arms and staggered through the door, bumping my head against the frame. He threw me on the bed, lifted my gown, then crawled on top of me. The beautiful negligee (my sister’s wedding gift to me) remained in my suitcase. Petticoats thrown to the floor along with my panties, his whiskey tongue in my mouth, his rough hand squeezing my breast, his legs forcing my knees apart, his groans and roars assaulting my ears, his penis thrusting hard into my vagina, ripping me apart. He came, then rolled over and fell asleep.

I gathered my beautiful gown, wet with a pink stain of sperm and blood, and tiptoed to the bathroom to wipe up the mess between my legs; startled by my image in the mirror: lipstick smeared, fallen bouffant, and streams of black mascara running down my face, I accepted the first of many failed expectations.

Nicky knew nothing about satisfying a woman. His technique started and ended with his kiss. Sex was all about his orgasm. For the first year, I didn’t even know what an orgasm felt like. Then, quite by chance, through no effort on Nicky’s part, I accidentally felt that overwhelming pleasure, that heart-racing, heat-inducing, out-of-control, thrusting first orgasm. Felt like a few minutes in heaven and gave me a small understanding of why men were so crazed with sex. After that, my sexual appetite increased while Nicky’s decreased because he was screwing around with other women.

Soon after I married Nicky, Mama said she had “something very important” to tell me. I noticed the candy-apple red that had crawled up her neck during the first “sex” talk had begun to flush her face again. She struggled to find the words. “Nicky told me I needed to teach you how to keep yourself clean or douche or something because he said… you smell down there.”

I felt like someone had just punched me in the stomach. The knockout blow came when Nicky betrayed me, when he asked Mama, “Do you know what your daughter wants me to do to her?” She wants me to go down there and kiss her and stuff. You know… disgusting!”

The words exploded inside me; blood drained to my feet; my knees gave in as my back fell against the wall. I crumbled to the floor. Tears of shame and humiliation streamed down my cheeks, I cried for a long time… so did Mama.

And so it was that Happy Puppy KEE-RA’s human, the Suit-in-Transition MEREDITH came home from the office full of energy. This caught Kee-Ra by surprise, but in a way he was ready.

It just so happened that his pal, RC the GREMLIN gave him the head’s up with advice to be “ALL EARS”.

INT. MEREDITH’S HOUSE

Within a flash, Meredith had changed into comfortable workout clothes and was heading towards the front door.

Kee-Ra is eyeing her.

KEE-RA
Walk-feets?

MEREDITH
Yes, and…

She motions and he hops to it.

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. WORLD OF JOY

[Reminder that Kee-Ra and Meredith live in a neighborhood referred to as THE WORLD OF JOY where found hound FINN-FINN and his human]

But this time, a slight detour.

KEE-RA
Mama, where we…?

She’s smiling.

KEE-RA
Gotcha!

Kee-Ra follows her lead and they go to a quieter tree-lined street with nice Victorians houses.

MEREDITH
Change of scenery will do us both good as… much to say, I have.

KEE-RA
This is nice.

MEREDITH
Right? Weird how… get so used to taking the same route… to and from work or town or our walk-feets in our hood, that something like this… gets missed.

KEE-RA
So you…?

MEREDITH
Had … an urge to … Well… after WAZE sent me a different way home, I looked around and was like… must walk it. Plus, I think I figured something out and I need to talk through it. Cool?

KEE-RA
Sure Mama! Like I said… All ears!

And so it was that Meredith INSIDE-OUT(ed) her breakthrough by sharing it.

MEREDITH
See these trees?

Kee-Ra looks around.

KEE-RA
Yes Mama… Nice leafy tree-lined street. Very calming, yes?

MEREDITH
My thought too, Buddy.

She nods urging Kee-Ra to explore while she also takes in everything she’s experiencing. When they get to a natural stopping point, Meredith pipes up.

MEREDITH
Made a discovery this week.

KEE-RA
Oh?

MEREDITH
There’s a tree-lined street like this near my work… near the university… accessible easily enough that I can escape there during lunch break.

KEE-RA
Really?

They walk some more.

MEREDITH
Strange how… but there’s something truly …

Words seem to escape her and Kee-Ra nods.

KEE-RA
I get it Mama. You found an oasis… a mid-day Zone to give yourself…

…I get it Mama. You found an oasis…

MEREDITH
Flo-time? I think that’s what our wise friend over the hill calls it. She’s been describing her process… drew it on a napkin… er several napkins… I nodded but… inside I was like… Meh…

Escape the Cave…

KEE-RA
It wasn’t time… You needed… Time.

MEREDITH
Yup. This Workshop helped me to get out of… that Go-GO-GO!! office mentality… to think about… and listen to the challenges of others and then… in those morning musings, I’d scribble down like … stuff I’m working through and get this…

The Workshop…

She sees a bench and motions for Kee-Ra to join her. Then she pulls a memo pad and pen out of her jacket pocket.

MEREDITH
See? This is where I release stuff that’s bubbled up. With limited time, I focus on jotting down thoughts that I can delve into during my morning musings sessions.

Scribble here…

Kee-Ra is nodding with a smile.

KEE-RA
So you found… an oasis AND figured out a way to keep YOUR flo going…

MEREDITH
And there’s more…!

He laughs.
KEE-RA
Of course there is. What MORE, Mama?

MEREDITH
There’s a neat garden area close by, so after releasing my bubble-ups, I’ve been checking out what they’re growing… SO different from that stale office environment and then, somehow, I magically return… just as the others are getting back from their lunch break, so the timing works out perfectly.

Lunch-time oasis…

KEE-RA
No stress? You just rolled right in?

MEREDITH
Yeah… I was like… I’ll get there when I get there… I mean… I knew when my next meetings were and … no biggie. I felt… calm.

She puts the memo pad back into her jacket pocket and smiles as she looks off into the distance.

KEE-RA
What you see, Mama?

MEREDITH
Me… Gently tapping the memo pad in my pocket while talking to co-workers about lunch… I … I think… nah… not important.

They keep walking…

KEE-RA
They… noticed?

Meredith smiles and nods.

MEREDITH
Well… one particular engineer mentioned a secret LUNCH SPOT as he thought my new-found afternoon energy came from something I ate…

Then, as in on cue, the sounds of “rumbly-tumbly” simultaneously occurs. She looks at Kee-Ra.

MEREDITH
You know what that means…

KEE-RA
Treats! Whatcha got in mind?

MEREDITH
A surprise. Let’s get back.

KEE-RA
Copy that, Mama!

They pick up the pace and then there’s one final “bubble-up”.

MEREDITH
Can’t wait to… Share with Katie. Maybe… we can do a meetup.

…Maybe… we can do a meetup…

KEE-RA
That would be fun, Mama.

FADE OUT.

Welcome to another Mr Pete Wow-Me starring the new champion New York Knicks!

Noteworthy: This piece was in prOcess for a while and could have run before the FINALS were FINAL, but we both decided to hold it -not to JINX the guys.

What you’ll find here is his masterful job capturing childhood memories of that OG championship team.

The other day, in my South Jersey 55+ apartment building, a fellow resident had asked me about my thoughts on the NEW YORK KNICKS and their recent NBA Championship Run. I had to confess I had not been following the team for quite a while. I could not even name any of the current lineup,

Then two old brain cells rubbed together and caused a spark and a twisted grin appeared…

Yup! That’s what I blurted out…

“I can’t name any of the current players but I can tell you the starters of the 1973-74 NEW YORK KNICKS”!

That’ll get you a nod and slow retreat. But it got me thinking and thus, this WowMe.

In the 60s -70s those days of my youth were spent in a town called Madison (the Rose City), Morris County, New Jersey.

Being twenty miles west of Times Square / NYC, my friends and I lived and breathed the local New York Sport teams:

NY Sports in the 70s…

What’s not to like, right?

• With baseball we had the METS and the YANKEES
• Football season gifted us with the JETS and the GIANTS
• When Basketball bounced around we had the KNICKS and the NETS**.

Editor’s note: Though generally ignored in the household, one member (AKA me) also had the Rangers and Islanders NHL hockey teams too!

**The NETS were part of the ABA (American Basketball Association). In 1976, they were one of the four teams that merged with the NBA.

Hoopin’ in the ‘Hood…

Sports became an important element in growing up. My Dad had put together a half basketball court on our huge backyard driveway. We even had a ABA, red white and blue ball (see above reference).

…With the right spin, a fading jump shot was hypnotic and strangely beautiful…

My crew would visit and practice almost daily. Yet, it was only my annoying (at that time) sister who had actually developed any of the skills needed to be considered a TRUE player.

As for the guys, we usually practiced trick shots while discussing last night’s game (this was before we started developing any interest in GIRLS).

Anyway, circling back to the late 60s/ early 70s… Let’s how we got our “fix” of sports…

Back then, New York had grown into a major media market –accessible via the television’s “RABBIT EAR” antenna and that CLICK-CLICK-CLICK of the dial:

• Channel 9 (WOR) for METS games
• Channel 11 (WPIX) for YANKEES games

Editor’s note: This was before ESPN, MSG and basic cable were available.

But, you know, game time rolled into bed time. We had that figured out thanks to Radio Shack and their nifty REALISTIC transistor radio that we’d hide under our pillows.

Pillow sports…

These “dreamcatchers” nightly caught Marv “Yes!” Albert —commonly referred to as “the voice of basketball,” from 1967 to 2004, he was also known as “the voice of the New York Knicks”.

I recall hearing the team intros, with my one ear pressed against a pillow and my other ear cradling a single earpiece. A variation of the Theme from the SHAFT was my welcome to the world of Madison Square Garden.

My Mom encouraged me to develop my communication [writing] skills by having me send written notes to various celebrities / sports stars requesting their autograph.

I eventually obtained a Walt “Clyde” Frazier autograph.

Sadly MY autograph was lost/misplaced somewhere in the tides of time.

Editor’s note: The shoes!! I asked for the suede CLYDEs but “Hard No!” as Dad wasn’t going to pay that kind of money. What I did “WIN” was suede converse from the factory outlet (Thanks, Dad!!).

In the 80s BILL BRADLEY was a New Jersey Senator (1979-1997). Every Summer Season he would do a walking tour of the Shore [New Jersey Beaches] where did a meet and greet with his constituents.

My Dad as a councilman for Stone Harbor, often invited me to tag allow. He would introduce me as his son and a Knicks Fan. I was too awe-struck to say anything more than “Please to meet You”.

Kicking around in former Suit KATIE’s mind ALWAYS is the phrase: AWARENESS IS JOB ONE !

And so it was that one day, beginning during her MORNING MUSINGS then continuing through her RUN and beyond, the topic of THE FOLLOW took a hold of her and pretty much didn’t release until she FINALLY settled into some writing.

Let’s see if WE can FOLLOW her FLO…–The Gang.

We’ll begin at the beginning.

FADE IN:

INT. KATIE’S KITCHEN

It is a NON-SHIFT day, so Katie is bouncing around the house doing various activities here and there with interrupts.

As for the breaks in the action, her pal RC the GREMLIN has the scoop…

RC THE GREMLIN
Whoa! She’s dusted off her notes from… FRANKIE ?? Looks like her dive into his NAME ABOVE THE TITLE and… Lots of what she calls NOTABLE QUOTABLES are called out in her… questionable hand writing. I’ll take some pictures while she’s doing her TAZ CHORES**

And so… RC gets his snaps and then has his own DING! moment. Listening for her whereabouts, he smiles and sneaks into the cabinet where Katie keeps her JOURNALS.

Aha! Wonder if…?

RC THE GREMLIN
She thinks out her thoughts here so… Just a few …

He waves his RAZR phone.

RC THE GREMLIN
Research NOT distribution. This is SACRED…

RC’s eyes say it all as he takes in what he sees…

Whoa! Lots of… ponderables… The WHAT. The WHY. Looks like… she’s referencing different books and one is… a LAY FLAT about the start of TWITTER…

He pauses to ponder.

What interests people most is people… Ms Katie was interested in a founder’s journey… How Mr Biz got TWITTER off the ground — the story behind the… what’s now X and…

Flips some pages.

RC THE GREMLIN
Alternate forms of following… but … WHY FOLLOW? There’s a FLOCKING thing mentioned by Biz… but birds also– do their own thing. Huh…

It is later in the day and RC has taken time to wander around pondering what he read… trying to make sense of it.

Somewhere near NEW LEAF grocery, he gets jolted back to reality as he finds himself airborne and spiraling followed by a cushioned fall.
Shaking his head, he looks around and sees WONDER / WANDER (WANDER / WONDER) Kat, MR SQUEEK.

MR SQUEEK
You can thank me later… Then again, why wait?

RC THE GREMLIN
What the…??

MR SQUEEK
Ya got more street sense than that, right? You just wandered into the path of some kind of eSUV… Now I don’t know how many lives ya think ya got, but that would’ve been…

Shakes head while recovering the RAZR that RC flung into the air while spiraling.

He FLIPS it open.

RC THE GREMLIN
Is it…?

…Takes a lickin’ and keeps on…

MR SQUEEK
Takes a lickin’ and keeps on…

RC THE GREMLIN
Tickin’ Really?

MR SQUEEK
Really what…? A TIMEX reference or the phone??

RC THE GREMLIN
I guess… both.

Mr Squeek is now scrolling through PHOTOs. He shows RC what he’s looking at.

MR SQUEEK
This is what you were…??

RC THE GREMLIN
Ju… Just pondering what I saw… What I SNAPPED… Trying to understand Ms KATIE’s musings…

A Spock-like raised eyebrow, is followed by tossing the RAZR back to RC.

MR SQUEEK
Here… Now FOLLOW ME!

RC THE GREMLIN
Follow? But… I’m already doing that… See??

He waves his RAZR.

MR SQUEEK
Dude… FOLLOW ME… Like let’s get out of the ROAD and …

RC THE GREMLIN
Ah! Gotcha! Lead on…

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. COMPANION BAKESHOP ON MISSION

They settle in and observe the creation of fine baked goods while talking…

Mr Squeek has re-acquired RC’s RAZR phone and is doing fast swipe / deleting while RC squirms.

MR SQUEEK
You know… it’s sacred. Can’t have those… keep those.

RC THE GREMLIN
But… it was … I was in a hurry and wanted to…

MR SQUEEK
Hey, I get it. However, you must Do. Better.
Memorize your eyes. Visualize the gist and … we’ll talk-it-out… like we are now.

He pauses and RC bows his head. Then he jumps up and grabs some napkins. Pulling a pen out of his pack, he starts doodling, which brings a smile to Mr Squeek’s face.

RC THE GREMLIN
Gotcha! Scribble down themes…

Pushing the napkin towards Mr Squeek, he relaxes and looks about the Bake Shop.

RC THE GREMLIN
So this is where it happened… The sourdough bread workshop?

Talking out loud, he doesn’t realize that Mr Squeek is in his own zone and has borrowed the pen and more napkins to doodle-write.

The word Catharsis appears. Then Group / Community.

He’s twirling the pen and then looks up.

MR SQUEEK
Have we talked about Red Dog?

RC THE GREMLIN
Uh… From … your travels? Your wanderings?

MR SQUEEK
Close… Told to me during my wanderings… an Aussie tale NOT TAIL … actually, it’d be brilliant to show outside… My hang at FAIR.

RC THE GREMLIN
It connects to…?

Hands back the RAZR.

MR SQUEEK
You’ll need this for some quick GOOGLing… I see a FOLLOW thread with multiple paths… but my mind leaped to the GREEK concept of catharsis… which you most definitely will want to GOOGLE.

RC nods and is about to engage with the RAZR, but Mr Squeek taps the table.

RC THE GREMLIN
Huh?

MR SQUEEK
Not yet. Let’s … talk this out a bit. Observations… Like that quote from Capra about what interests… People… Totally makes sense as… your @TheSEA storytime sessions are a proof point, yes?

RC THE GREMLIN
Yes.

MR SQUEEK
Well… I don’t exactly know why this popped into my head, but the catharsis thing — a group experience — something the Greeks were onto and maybe it is a way to connect with others while also allowing yourself time to FEEL and PROCESS… you walk away from the experience… different. And if in a group, you all are different… changed… So…

RC is jotting and talking out loud.

RC THE GREMLIN
Catharsis. Greek. Group. Red Dog.

Mr Squeek taps the napkin and says…

MR SQUEEK
Like Cinema Paradiso-style… Ya know? Project it… on the side of… I had this in my head and tabled it, so to speak, but maybe now is the time…

… maybe now is the time…

They are so engrossed in conversation that they don’t notice that Happy Barista / Uber Driver KIMBA has entered the bakeshop with a bounce in her step.

And Kimba seeing her pals hanging out, has a huge smile on her face.

How perfect is that?
