After Mr Pete viewed the “I PLAY ROCKY” trailer, his mind took flight.

Inspiration? For sure!

There is an ancient branch of Japanese wisdom called “GANBARU”, a guide to live your life thorough perseverance, discipline, resilience & purpose:

*Ganbaru (頑張る) is a Japanese verb that means to persist, work hard, and do one’s best through tough times. It literally means to “stand firm” or “hold your ground”, combining the kanji for stubbornness or toughness (gan) with the kanji for sticking to or stretching out (haru)

These are notions that this young grasshopper was unaware that his father had been encouraging him in. I was aware that my father had visited JAPAN once for a business trip but these notions are not strictly confined to Japanese Traditions.

My father had a postmodern statue on his home work desk.

How it Ties-in…

<<< ReWind <<< There were two elements of what I refer to as “The Gladue Report Card Meetings.” In the Dark Room of his home office, around Report Card Time, my Dad would bring each one of us, individually to go over our grades [Think of it as a performance review which he no doubt had lots of experience doing in his job at Allied Corporation].

Many years, I sat there and pleaded my case:

“I was doing the BEST that I can.”

My Dad would point to his “Man pushing a Boulder Statue” and would often say:

…Discipline is NOT enough without Structure.

That was too heavy a thought for my young mind to comprehend.

Structure??

The second element was how closed our “conferences” – with lasting images.

One was a silhouette of the Kennedy Brothers, deep in discussion.

“Someday I wish that the GLADUE brothers would be working together to solve the problems of the world.”

Gee, Dad… NO pressure there!

The other picture was of a giant Jesus standing by the UN building in New York, apparently knocking on the side like it was a door. My Dad would always say it meant that the world needs to welcome JESUS into their HEARTS.

…That picture always freaked me out…

In my young mind I thought the picture was JESUS looking into the windows because “HE SEES EVERYTHING.”

This was the start of my inferiority and paranoia complexes (LOL).

In 1976 a movie came out “ROCKY” — a story about a down on his luck Philadelphian boxer.

My sister and I instantly related to the lead character. For me it was because Rocky often mumbled and was not worldly in the game of love, and I was suffering from a stutter –too shy to talk to girls.

It was the training scenes that immediately resonated for my sister. The theme song became her motivational soundtrack for her workouts for Track and Cross Country.

…We both knew it was a movie to share with our Dad.

That being said, I should point out that my mother was hesitant in giving her approval because an early review in our parochial
paper, THE BEACON, suggested good Catholics to show CAUTION before viewing it.

My Dad, having grown up during the GREAT DEPRESSION and surviving WWII, was always able to relate to the underdog.

I think it was in 1977 when all three of us were able to catch the movie. Afterwards my Dad expressed his approval.

It wasn’t until many years later, after my time in college that I came to realize that many of the core basic notions that were part of the ROCKY movie series were the same ones that my father had tried to instill in me as a Young Man. For that, I’m grateful [chest thump. point to the sky.].

It has been a few years since my DAD has passed, but when I saw the trailer for “I PLAY ROCKY”, I felt in my heart and mind that this was a film I wished I could share with him.

It is about how “Rocky” the movie, came to be. That “making of” story seems to be as inspiration for writers and filmmakers as the original film was to all us underdogs and dreamers/believers.

In my mind, somewhere my DAD is smiling and maybe shedding a tear or two.

Yes! As I move through MY day-to-day existence, I find comfort knowing the Hungry Soul, although tragic, fragile and flawed will always BE and always REMAIN a WORK IN PROGRESS**.

I really wish the movie was coming out soon. Guess repeated viewing of the trailer will have to do.

Sure enough, while she was sweeping the sidewalk in front of the cafe her curious mind kicked in. Noticing the direction the truck was driving, she followed a hunch and gave her pal, SAM the owner of the hardware store up the street, a shout.

FADE IN:

INT. SAM’S HARDWARE

A gentleman with a greying mustache is on the phone while also keeping an eye out for the door.

SAM
Hey there… (pause) Yeah… Was expecting him… (pause) Katie’s husband… the man in the truck with Kee-Ra. (pause) All good. Here to pick up some … unique items I had in storage… and … hang on…

He covers the mouthpiece while greeting Gear Guy.

SAM
Welcome… You too, Kee-Ra! Keeping our Guy here out of trouble? Just finishing up a call here.

GEAR GUY
All good. We’ll look around, won’t we buddy.

Kee-Ra has already taken off to explore.

Sam returns to the call.

SAM
Just Gear Guy and Kee-Ra. (pause) A project? For Katie? (pause) Ah! Gotcha…
So, how can I be of assistance? (pause). On it. Will let you know how it goes.

Sam hangs up and scans the aisles until he finds the one Gear Guy is exploring.

GEAR GUY
Get me outta here, Sam. I can… I will spend TOO much time here AND we’ve got…

His mobile pings. Gear Guy shows it and then reads the message. Kee-Ra glances at the phone too.

GEAR GUY
Yup… She’s on the way back to Jeep storage… AKA Kee-Ra’s house.

SAM
Load you up… Get ya going. Follow me.

Sam leads Gear Guy to a corner with several packages neatly stacked.

GEAR GUY
Wow! Glad I brought the truck!

SAM
It’s not that bad…

GEAR GUY
Grateful… I. Am. Grateful. It’ll be fun to see if… what I imagined … works.

SAM
Text me. Heck… call me… Facetime is cool. I don’t mind. Now, can you do ME a favor?

GEAR GUY
You? Of course… What’s up?

SAM
Actually, I lied… not ME but a friend of mind…

Points down the street. Kee-Ra perks up.

…I knew it. I knew it! I knew it!!

KEE-RA
I knew it. I knew it! I knew it!! Something’s up with owner Nicole.

SAM
Owner of JEDEMI made a special request … for you, Katie and that TRUCK of yours to swing by before you jet back over the hill.

GEAR GUY
Yeah… Sure! She’s wrapping up her Jeep adventure… and we’re heading back to beat the rush.

SAM
Perfect. Please see what she’s up to… I don’t have visibility… well I heard some things but… from the horse’s mouth is best, ya know!

GEAR GUY
Yup. I know. And you’re right, it’s not that bad.

He points to the bed of his truck which is only partially full.

GEAR GUY
Thanks again!

Kee-Ra bows and paw-fist bumps Sam.

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. MEREDITH’S HOUSE

Katie is giving Kee-Ra a hug and points to the garage. Kee-Ra looks and then races over to Gear Guy, offering a paw.

GEAR GUY
No hug? (laughs) Fine… bump it is.

KEE-RA
Thanks, Guy! That was fun. Let’s do it again… so much to explore!

One more bow and he’s on his way. Gear Guy presses the remote to secure the garage, and they too, are OM (On the Move).

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. JEDEMI CAFE

As they pull up, Nicole meets them and motions to the back where deliveries are received. Katie and Gear Guy look at each other.

Nicole directs them and then points to the tailgate.

NICOLE
Swing or drop?

GEAR GUY
Depends… What we loading…?

NICOLE
Whoopsie! Racing ahead… Sam didn’t…?

GEAR GUY
All I know is… You have a project for Katie and the guy with the truck.

Katie smiles.

KATIE
Come to think of it… You’ve never met my husband… The Gear Guy.

They shake hands.

NICOLE
You’re the unicorn…!! The mythological … Lot’s I’ve heard… good… rather GREAT things… Kinda just put 2 and 2 together.

Nicole points to several book boxes.

NICOLE
Mind holding onto those for a bit. Got a big reno starting and want to get them… protected… somewhere safe. Katie, you’ll know why if you peek… but taped I did for safe passage.

KATIE
We got ya!

GEAR GUY
Sure. Let’s put one of those shelving units you just built into use my lady!

So while Gear Guy re-arranges his truck to accommodate the boxes, Nicole motions for Katie to follow her.

NICOLE
Bring that SATCHEL-PAK … You’re gonna need it.

The Pin edition…

Katie gives her a look.

They make their way to the basement and Nicole points.

NICOLE
Gotta relocate… just for a bit. If things go well, could be… 3 weeks max. Can ya do it?

KATIE
Yeah… Sure!

NICOLE
Okay. Grab that box.

Katie follows Nicole up the stairs and they now head into her office.

NICOLE
Welcome to… what used to be MY OFFICE. It has been … converted to a READING ROOM… a MANGA READING ROOM…
She points and there’s one of the original GANG, JOEY deep into a manga.

NICOLE
Let’s scoop him and his…

There’s another box.

One of the treasured boxes…

KATIE
Gotcha… Bet if we’re gentle, he won’t even notice he’s being moved.

NICOLE
THAT would be awesome…

EXT. JEDEMI CAFE

Back to the truck as the last boxes are being loaded in. And sure enough Joey the MANGA READER has not noticed.
Tailgate shut.

GEAR GUY
Temporary, Ms Nicole?

NICOLE
Yeah… Told Katie… Maybe like 3 weeks max. The basement will be redone and we… a designer I’m working with who’s fantastic… She came up with a way we can ZONE off the lending library/reading room.

Nicole is beaming.

KATIE
Ah… So you get your office back?

NICOLE
It was nice … the share but I kept thinking I was going to disturb him… Clearly he’s NOT disturbable… My idea now is… Why not offer MANGA READING to others, right?

KATIE
Love it!

Gear Guy nudges Katie and motions towards the truck.

NICOLE
Thanks, guys! Drive safe!

GEAR GUY
Will do!

NICOLE
Lifesavers! You both are!

Nicole bows and waves as they zip away.

• The boys (GEAR GUY and Happy Puppy KEE-RA) are heading into town.
• Former Suit KATIE is heading to an OASIS within SILICON VALLEY.
• RC the GREMLIN / STORYTELLER is on standby … hanging in the WESTSIDE with Happy Barista/ Uber driver KIMBA.
• The new YOSH!!WESTSIDE magnets have been THUNKED into the JEEP, and…
• The JEEP just so happens to cross paths with a BECKMANN’s truck…
• Leveraging his Ninja-like capabilities, the WONDER/WANDER (WANDER/WONDER) Kat MR SQUEEK)leaps into the back of the JEEP unnoticed.

This tale begins back at THE JEDEMI CAFE, where two of the resident LPs, FRANNIE & DOSSIE, are conferring from the rafter-level. They seem to be referring to drawings on the BLACKBOARD.

INT. JEDEMI CAFE

FRANNIE
Well… They should be driving by any moment now.

DOSSIE
And OWNER NICOLE? Is she…?

FRANNIE
Outside sweeping… She’ll see them, no doubt.

DOSSIE
For sure, Happy Puppy KEE-RA will see her.

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. GEAR GUY’S TRUCK

And so it was that Happy Puppy and former Suit KATIE’s husband, GEAR GUY, rolled into town on a “MISSION” (or rather MISSION**).

…Here? We’re… HERE!! Cool! It’s been a while…

KEE-RA
Here? We’re… HERE!! Cool! It’s been a while and… LOOK! There’s that lovely lady … OWNER!!

At the light, Kee-Ra manages to free himself from the co-pilot position and moves to roll down the back seat window, driver side.

KEE-RA
Hey, there Lady!

Hearing a familiar voice, JEDEMI OWNER, Nicole looks up and sees him briefly.

She waves as the light has changed.

GEAR GUY
Buckle up back there, Sport.

KEE-RA
Will do!

He settles in.

GEAR GUY
We’re almost there… for the pickup.

KEE-RA
Cool! That (points back)… That’s Owner! Can we…?

GEAR GUY
Let’s … see how things go. There may be a few more stops.

KEE-RA
Fair enough.

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. TREE-LINED STREET

And so it was that former Suit KATIE navigated herself towards Suit-in-Transition MEREDITH’s mid-day OASIS. What Katie doesn’t know is that she’s got a STOW-AWAY. She smiles when she sees the MEREDITH MOBILE.

KATIE
Made it! Woo-hoo!

There’s an open parking spot that she glides into.

KATIE
Double-Woo-hoo!! Princess parking!

Katie hops out of the Jeep and bounds to the passenger side. She reaches in to grab her SATCHEL-PAK and jogs to the table where Meredith is — Nibbling on a sandwich while flipping through a book.

KATIE
Uh… Whatcha reading, Lady?

Smiling, Meredith looks up.

MEREDITH
A fantastic MANGA! Great storytelling and…

She picks up the book to demonstrate its “flappy-ness”.

MEREDITH
It properly stays flat so I can just prop it up…

KATIE
Great choice, by the way…

MEREDITH
Magically appeared! You hungry?

She points to the other half of her sandwich.

KATIE
I’m good. Thanks though…

MEREDITH
So… what do ya think of it?

Meredith stand to stretch and motions 360 with her hands and body.

KATIE
Nice! Very Zen…

MEREDITH
Oh… and check it. Your TIMER!

DBRs Timer…

Meredith also looks at her watch.

MEREDITH
See! I have time to eat and read and … ponder.

She points to her SATCHEL-PAK that looks identical to Katie’s. And Katie smiles as she reaches into her own.

KATIE
Pardon the interruption… Kinda… Here on a mission… For now… a drop off with context. We can talk more… keep you on schedule.

This time Katie points to her own wrist (implying time).

Out of the PAK comes an INNER-OFFICE envelope which Katie opens up and pulls out a series of drawings. Meredith starts to study.

The handoff…

MEREDITH
Interesting…

…I’ve run this BREAD WORKSHOPPIN’ concept as far as I can take it…

KATIE
Yeah… Well… I think I’ve run this BREAD WORKSHOPPIN’ concept as far as I can take it. AND… well, I’m sure you’ve experienced…

She motions in circles.

MEREDITH
Spiraling…

KATIE
Don’t like it. FLO is much better. This is fun and all but… lucky for me — the UNIVERSE in the form of GEAR GUY and pal, said
pencil’s down.

MEREDITH
O-k-a-y… So?
Studying the drawings some more, they both jump as something THUNKS onto the table.

KATIE
What the…?

What the thunk…?!

MR SQUEEK
Greetings, Ladies!

He pauses a beat before continuing.

MR SQUEEK
Did I catch you at a bad time?

MEREDITH
DoorKat!?! How’d you…?

KATIE
Mr Squeek… Funny seeing you here.

MR SQUEEK
Funny ha ha, or funny ot-oh?

He laughs and they join in.

Points to the Jeep.

MR SQUEEK
Doin’ my thing… Ya know… Hitching a ride with my BECKMANN’s pal. Saw you… got curious…

KATIE
You? WANDER / WONDER … er WONDER / WANDER Kat… curious?? Go on!

Meredith watches them and enjoys the banter.

MEREDITH
Pleased to have you join us… And what … have you dragged in?

Katie gives her a stern look and shakes her head.

KATIE
Dropped… She means dropped off…

Pointing to the items thunked.

MR SQUEEK
Something… you left in the Jeep. Figured it was… part of … why you’re here…

They all stare at the shrink-wrapped package. Katie instinctively reaches for her GREEN KLEVER CUTTER from her PAK.

MEREDITH
Are they…?

KATIE
Magnets… Looks like… Same size as the DUCKIN’ ones on the JEEP.

MEREDITH
Like the design.

KATIE
Yeah… Kimba made pins, see?

Katie points to the pin on her PAK.

The Pin edition…

KATIE
She’s been on a roll… Pin idea is cool… but these…

MEREDITH
Let’s test… I gotta be …

The TIMER rings.

KATIE
I know. We’ll catch up later.

Packing up, they walk together to the Meredith mobile to put on a magnet. Studying placement options.

MEREDITH
Good for now. I’ll play more later.

KATIE
Here… take a few more… for your PLAY sessions.

Meredith nods, jumps in and zips away. Katie turns to see Mr Squeek has already strategically placed the YOSH!!WESTSIDE magnet.

MR SQUEEK
It… really pops! Makes Duckin’ kinda drab lookin’

Comparing magnets…

Katie nods in agreement.

KATIE
So… in the Jeep, eh? Found?

Mr Squeek points to passenger side floor.

KATIE
Interesting. Where you headed now? Need a…?

Just then Katie’s phone pings. She studies.

KATIE
Looks like GEAR GUY is done with his errands, so back to Meredith’s. Jeep drop and then… back over the hill.

MR SQUEEK
Gotcha… Thanks for the offer but… There’s ‘sploring to do in these parts… Plus… I heard… hear… TRAIN?

KATIE
Yeah SANTA CLARA station … not far… It’ll get ya back to…

MR SQUEEK
San Jose! I know the way from San Jose !!

They both laugh.

KATIE
Guess that means… See ya when I see ya!

MR SQUEEK
Not if I see ya first!!

Summertime! And the Living is Easy…

Something happened in the universe that summer…

It was a summer of gatherings: FIFA World Cup matches to be watched; an ALL-STAR GAME for Major League Baseball that put Philly AGAIN on the radar [Philadelphia hosted six matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Philadelphia Stadium (Lincoln Financial Field), including five group-stage games and a Round of 16 match on July 4, 2026 Paraguay vs. France.]

And it seems like our “gang-some” was overdue for a CHECK-IN / CHECK-UP / WHAT’S UP...

Strangely (or NOT!) the arrival of 3×3 sized magnets seemed to set the wheels in motion.

They’re h-e-r-e…!

REWIND…

So let’s set the stage with a little Rewind.

The “All-Ears” RC was impressed with Happy Barista / UBER driver KIMBA’s latest creation: the “YOSH!!WESTSIDE” pin.
Pictures taken with his RAZR phone were shared.

Some Gremlin-like behavior (of course!) took place and before long the wheels were in motion for something GRANDER…

REUNION…

Well… yeah… Lots of time reunions take place in the summer, so “Sure! Why not?” right??

But circling back, summertime is when lots of folks make the crawl over 17 to the SANTA CRUZ BOARDWALK (and beyond).
With so much of humanity heading WEST, who could blame our Westsiders for wanting to change up a bit and head in the opposite direction?

And so it was that our pals from JEDEMI had a bird’s-eye view of WHAT. HAPPENED. NEXT.

INT. JEDEMI CAFE

And so it was that cafe regulars, DOSSIE and FRANNIE where having a chat one morning.

FRANNIE
She’s right, you know…

DOSSIE
Yeah… I know. It’s unhealthy and…

FRANNIE
She wants her office back. Doesn’t like flying down the hallway to a locked door.

DOSSIE
Yeah… BINGE-READING MANGA… Who knew that he’d get so TUNNELED … so …?

FRANNIE
Well… he did do that “Go to the Woods and Read” thing back in the day when he bailed out** of his… I think PhD program…

Right… Something like that. Anyway, we have to help NICOLE out. She’s been awesome to us…

FRANNIE
Truly has run this place as though VIV never left, too!

DOSSIE

DOSSIE
Got her out and about. We should tag along sometime.

Frannie nods in agreement.

DOSSIE
For sure, a re-directing of pal JOEY…

FRANNIE
Our WESTSIDERs are OM says Doc.

DOSSIE
Did he say if RC was with them. It would be nice to see him.

A smile and a shoulder shrug.

FRANNIE
We’ll find out soon enough.

They pause for a moment and then Dossie perks up, pointing to the BLACKBOARD nearby.

DOSSIE
Ah-ha! I have an idea!

The ladies have grabbed their coloured chalk and are sketching away.

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. MEREDITH’S HOUSE

And so it was that former Suit KATIE and her husband GEAR GUY had ‘smooth sailing’ so to speak, over the hill — arriving at Suit-in-Transition MEREDITH’s house mid-morning…

GEAR GUY
It’s been a while. You’re over-due…

KATIE
You’re right. Good call.

Gear Guy works his magic and the garage door opens. They are greeted by Happy Puppy KEE-RA.

KEE-RA
You’re here!!

He bounds up to Katie and then notices…

KEE-RA
And YOU’RE here… GEAR GUY!! Long time. No See. Tho… yeah still rockin’ the scruff. That’s… you man! Totally you!!

GEAR GUY
Hey buddy… Staying outta trouble?

KEE-RA
Yeah… You know… Just chillin’

Kee-Ra is dancing about looking at both of them a bit.

KEE-RA
… So JEEP adventure today? It’s been a while!

KATIE
That’s what HE said… You guys ARE simpatico in many ways…

KEE-RA
Cool beans!

Kee-Ra leaps into the JEEP – settling into his CO-PILOT position. Gear Guy and Katie are laughing.

GEAR GUY
Uh… Not you, buddy… You… Got a truck adventure in your future… Wanna see…?

Before he finishes the sentence, Kee-Ra jumps in.

KEE-RA
Your latest “FINDS”?? Well… Yeah… Of course!! Getting some quality time with the UNICORN ?? Don’t have to ask twice…

Kee-Ra then turns to Katie.

KEE-RA
Sorry lady Katie! Gotta sit this one out.

KATIE
Of course you do.

Gear Guy opens the passenger door so Kee-Ra can hop out.

GEAR GUY
It’s warm today… You should roll with half-doors, don’t ya think?

KATIE
Great idea!!

In less than a minute, Katie has pulled out the Driver side window and Gear Guy has done the same with the passenger side.

KEE-RA
Whoa! Synchronized and everything too…!

He perceptively observes Gear Guy depositing something on the floor of the passenger side while shutting the door. Katie hops in and flings her bag on the floor, covering what he just dropped in and then… wraps the string around the gear shift.

KATIE
Gotta keep it from flying away…

GEAR GUY
Go easy… Back streets…

KATIE
Copy that. Back. Streets. Back. Come on!

And the three of them, in unison say: “ALRIGHT!!”

After the laughter dies down, Katie continues.

KATIE
Now you boys… Have fun!

GEAR GUY
You too! I’m sure MEREDITH will get a kick out of seeing you.

KEE-RA
Mama! You’re seeing Mama??

Katie points to the SATCHEL-PAK on the passenger seat floor.

KATIE
Stuff to share… Plus, I’d love to see that mid-day oasis of hers.

GEAR GUY
So… Meet up back here… when ya think?

KATIE
I’ll text you. No later than 2. We need to be heading back … beat the evening commute.

GEAR GUY
Gotcha! And in the words of that soon to be famous WESTSIDE SEABIRD… YOSH!!

Kee-Ra gives him the NIPPER DOG ear tilt. Katie smiles though it is clear she only heard the tale end, so she repeats:

KATIE
YOSH!!

After she zips away, GEAR GUY uses an APP on his phone to close the garage door.

KEE-RA
Ah! That’s how you did it!

RC is intently focused on KATIE’S MUSINGs, he feels a presence.

RC THE GREMLIN

RC stands and points to the coffee pot while nudging the JOURNAL to the side (as though to shield from Gear Guy’s eyes.
By the elbow, guides Gear Guy to the coffee pot and then grabs a TRIGGER MUG.

Trigger Mug…

GEAR GUY
Fresh?

RC THE GREMLIN
Well… Close enough… It’s her 4A special. Go ahead and give it a…

They tap mugs and sip.

GEAR GUY
That is a TASTY BEVERAGE!

RC THE GREMLIN
Right? Some serious gourmet shit… Better than that freeze dried, Taster’s Choice …

Voiced like Jules in Pulp Fiction.

GEAR GUY
Yeah… I miss drinking this… serious gourmet shit…

Also, sounding like Jules in Pulp Fiction. Then his attention shifts back to where RC was sitting…

They are now in the garage, and Gear Guy points to Katie’s golf bag.

He excitedly pulls out a wedge and hands it to RC.

How’s it feel?

Puzzled RC grasps the club and gives Gear Guy a look, shaking his head.

RC THE GREMLIN
Ya got me… This is an area I haven’t ventured… GOLF?
Something that just … happens with you guys. I’m only there for the AFTER-BEER, remember?

Taking the club back, Gear Guy points to the grip.

Getting re-gripped…

GEAR GUY
Fresh. New. Grips!! Fresh. JUMBO… See? Non tapered and… truly suitable for how she plays.

Points to the bag.

GEAR GUY
Not too expensive of an upgrade either as she travels light…

Traveling light…

RC THE GREMLIN
Funny… we were just talking about that… So…

Studies the bag closely.

RC THE GREMLIN
Indeed… That like six sticks and a putter, right? You re-gripped…?

GEAR GUY
Six… left the putter alone. She’ll be… or should be surprised… pleasantly… Next time we…

Gripping the wedge, RC smiles.

Which reminds me…

Gear Guy motions for RC to follow him to a corner and then he points to where RC should focus his eyes.

GEAR GUY
UPS driver handed me a stack of packages. Timing was perfect as there’s some “shaking” out to do before the next FISH-OUT gathering I’m leading.

RC nods and then does a DOUBLE-TAKE as he recognizes the STICKER MULE envelope.

Busted!!

Gear Guy watches his reaction and laughs.

GEAR GUY
No worries… Gotcha covered.

RC THE GREMLIN
Huh?

GEAR GUY
You know… Actually… you probably don’t know… StickerMule has a logistics system that gives ya blow-by-blow tracking info… shipping and out for delivery…

RC THE GREMLIN
Whoops! That means she knows…

GEAR GUY
Not exactly… She THINKS the notifications are more of my TROUT ROUTE magnets as the first batch came from her account…

In the wild…

RC looks relieved.

GEAR GUY
Guilted her out a bit since she took so many to do her DUCKIN’ experiment.

RC THE GREMLIN
Thanks and… Let’s see how they came out.

GEAR GUY
They?

RC THE GREMLIN
A magnet experiment.

Gear Guy reaches into his cargo shorts and pulls out a YELLOW DEWALT box cutter.

Just as he’s about to hand it over, RC pulls out a GREEN KLEVER KUTTER and quickly opens the package. Scanning inside before pulling out its contents, a huge smile crosses his face.

Dueling blades…

RC THE GREMLIN
Y-E-S-!-!

Two shrink wrapped bundles are shaken onto the table. The KLEVER nimbly works its magic and the magnets are freed.

RC THE GREMLIN
Cool, right Guy?

RC sees the metal cabinet where Gear Guy keeps his files (FISHOUTs, Equipment Purchases, etc.) and slaps one of the magnets next to the GREEN TROUT ROUTE.

Fishout land…

GEAR GUY
Colorful! Makes mine look kinda…

While playing with the magnets, RC’s mind races along.

RC THE GREMLIN
Gotta see… literally… how they play in the Wild… I was not sure about the size, but the deal… figured it was worth a shot.

GEAR GUY
Oh… the 3-by-3 push? Figured that’s what happened and Ms Katie is too busy to drill down into the details —
RC fist bumps Gear Guy.

RC THE GREMLIN
Thanks, Dude! I’m outta here.

GEAR GUY
Wait… What?

RC THE GREMLIN
Oh… yeah… Right…

He hands over one of the stacks.

RC THE GREMLIN
Gotta show KIMBA the BARISTA “slash” UBER DRIVER as this is… HER design…

The SEABIRD. There’s a pin version kicking around. I just stepped it up a notch.

Can you… Share with Lady Katie? Just tell her, these arrived… no note or… Make something up.

RC winks.

GEAR GUY
Sure. Why not? Got ya covered, Sport. Now move along, she’ll be back soon…

With a THUMBS UP, RC trots away in one direction while Ms Katie walks up to the stoop from the opposite.

Now what is it?

In June 2017, under s pseudo-name, the third of the Jedemi Chronicles launch trilogy was published on AMAZON.

In brief, a hard-charging, corporate ladder-climbing young lady (the Suit) has a close encounter at the café that leads to a life changing experience.

What happened that night truly got the ball rolling for her journey. One of the tactics just so happens to be mentioned in recent DISH-PATCHes — Hands-on.

So we thought we’d treat you to a section from “SUIT.”

FADE IN:

INT. JEDEMI CAFE

Suit in Transition, KATIE is sitting at a table facing a video screen. There’s an opened bottle water in front of her and a napkin with a cookie on it.

She is being spoken to by regulars at JEDEMI CAFE, starting with DOSSIE and FRANNIE.

DOSSIE
That was a noble first try, young…

KATIE
Katie.

FRANNIE
The lady is Katie. Easy enough to remember. So how was it for you?

KATIE
Looks so easy up there, but it’s really REALLY hard to do. I can’t… there’s no way.

She’s talking to empty chairs. Again, it is dreamlike.

FRANNIE
Maybe not now, but eventually you may be able to tackle it.

KATIE
You really think so?

DOSSIE
Oh, definitely Katie. You’ve got the drive and determination — that’s clear. But…

FRANNIE
You were… trying too hard…

DOSSIE
And then you got frustrated…

FRANNIE
Which made you try even harder…

KATIE
Like I said, there’s no way…

DOSSIE
No way going at it THAT WAY…

FRANNIE
Yeah — hasn’t anyone every shared with you the joys of relaxed concentration?

DOSSIE
It’s being purposeful with a Zen twist…

FRANNIE
Which means you don’t force it…

DOSSIE
You relax and it comes to you…

FRANNIE
When the time is right.

KATIE
Really?

FRANNIE
That probably goes against everything you’ve ever learned…

DOSSIE
But if you ask anyone who has accomplished anything… made a breakthrough, it was probably when they were relaxed and at one with themselves.

Katie takes another sip of water and is staring at the bottle.

FRANNIE
Clearly, that’s unfamiliar to you. No worries, Katie. You have plenty of company.

Just then, a buzzing sound can be heard [it’s X – AKA St X – AKA Zup ] and a highlighter green BALL (bigger than a baseball/smaller than a softball) bounces near Katie’s chair. She picks it up and starts fooling around with it.

DOSSIE
Let’s shift gears slightly. I’m really curious to learn more about you and your day.

FRANNIE
So if you don’t mind, could you tell us about your job and what do you?

As Katie answers, she’s playing a bit more intensely with the ball.

CUT TO:

INT. JEDEMI CAFE
View from above. Two more regulars, DOC and JOEY are observing.

DOC
Humm… Looks like they are onto something.

JOEY
What makes you say that?

DOC
You saw how frustrated she got trying to re-create the chair dance… Now she’s sitting down, sipping at water and calmly chatting. See?

At the moment Joey looks, Katie has taken the spongy ball and slammed it into the wall at a pretty high-velocity.

JOEY
Calmly you say?

CUT TO:

INT. JEDEMI CAFE

Table near video screen: Katie has just sat back down after retrieving the ball — which ricocheted around for a while before landing where she could reach it. Frannie and Dossie maintain an even tone — very non-judgemental.

FRANNIE
You’ve got quite the arm. Did you play ball in school?

KATIE
With my brothers a bit when we were younger.

DOSSIE
Nothing recently though?

Katie shakes her head and continues to fool with the ball on the table.

FRANNIE
Could you excuse us for a minute?

KATIE
Sure.

Frannie and Dossie move just out of earshot and talk about the next steps.

FRANNIE
Are you thinking what I’m thinking?

DOSSIE
You mean…Go with what she knows?

FRANNIE
Yup. Let’s see what she can do with the ball X dropped off.

They move back to the table.

DOSSIE
We’d love another demonstration of that arm of yours again.

FRANNIE
See that poster over there?

DOSSIE
You think you can hit it?

KATIE
Of course!

She fires a direct bull’s eye.

FRANNIE
How’s your consistency? Can you hit the middle of that poster 10 times in a row?

KATIE
10 times? Humm… That’s kind of tough. (pause) Okay… here goes.

She manages 9 out of 10. Clapping can be heard when she finishes.

DOSSIE
That’s VERY impressive.

FRANNIE
Ready for the bonus round?

KATIE
Bonus? What do I get? Another one of those delicious cookies?

FRANNIE
You can have another one whenever you like. The reward we’re referring to isn’t cookies or food for that matter.

DOSSIE
It’s much bigger!

KATIE
Bigger, eh? Okay. What do I need to do?

FRANNIE
Switch hands.

KATIE
Huh?

DOSSIE
Can you throw lefty?

FRANNIE
What we’d like is for you to turn yourself around, Katie and use your other arm.

KATIE
Humm… Can’t say I’ve ever tried that before.

DOSSIE
Something tells me you can do it. In fact, I’d say that deep down inside, you’re a natural southie.

FRANNIE
Go on… give it a try.

Without the ball in her hand, she goes through the motions.

KATIE
That feels really weird.

DOSSIE
Weird, but possible, right?

Katie doesn’t respond and continues to simulate the throwing motion.

FRANNIE
Hold on a sec, Katie. I’ve got an idea. First, I want you to take a seat.

KATIE
Back at the table?

FRANNIE
Pretty much anywhere that’s comfortable. You seemed good and relaxed where we first found you.

Katie returns to the spot and sits with her legs stretched out. She’s still holding the ball.

FRANNIE
Okay, now please close your eyes, Katie.

KATIE
For real?

FRANNIE
Yes. Dossie, how about firing up some music — something to throw to you know what I mean?

DOSSIE
Got just the thing.

Before the words left her mouth, Annie Lennox’s “Sisters are doin’ it” begins to play.

Enchanted Jukebox…

DOSSIE
What the…?

FRANNIE
Good choice. Now Katie, listen to the music and feel the ball in your hand. Got it?

Katie has her eyes shut and seems to be absorbing the beat.

DOSSIE
(whispers) Ah… I think I know where you’re headed, Frannie. Good idea.

FRANNIE
Now you are in the video in your mind’s eye. See yourself sitting there all relaxed with that spongy ball in your hand. (pause) Now see yourself standing up and walking over to where you were standing before. With the ball in your left hand, see yourself aiming and throwing to the wall. Nice and relaxed. Follow the beat.

Katie can be seen smiling.

DOSSIE
(whispers) She’s doin’ it, I believe.

CUT TO:

INT. JEDEMI CAFE

View from above: Doc and Joey are observing.

DOC
That’s interesting.

JOEY
Aha! Of course. She’s working the visualization angle. When I ran track that came in handy. Also, it got me focused on running from within, you know?

DOC
Makes sense.

JOEY
Once you get a feel for being in the zone … ah… there’s nothing like it.

From above, we can see Katie proficiently throwing left handed.

DOC
She’s doin’ it!

JOEY
Indeed she is !

Analytical thinking is most definitely woven into this movie, as practiced by… Sheep LILY and Sheep MOPPLE…

EARLY one morning LILY (AKA the smart one) and MOPPLE (AKA the wise one) discover GEORGE outside of his trailer, Apparently DEAD**

We watch as Smart Sheep Lily leverages her Analytical Thinking skills to figure out WHO murdered GEORGE. WE (the Sheep) shall solve the crime!

Worth noting… Apparently, SHEEP have the ability to forget/erase any memory that they find painful, simply by counting to three and wishing it away.

Wise Sheep MOPPLE, however lacks this 1-2-3 ability (which makes him the WISE one). As the “storer /retainer of information,” his talents are especially helpful to “Detective LILY”.

And They’re Off to …

Leaving the safety and security of their meadow, they venture out to seek clues.

[Yes… the “fish out of water” motif is now in play]

LILY and MOPPLE are joined by an Elder Sheep, SEBASTIAN (the Elder/WinterSheep) who has “out-of-meadow” experience, apparently.

Hard Stop…

Case in point… When these detectives encounter a Road , LILY and MOPPLE come to a HARD STOP, whereas SEBASTIAN crosses easily.

…They first must conquer their FEAR of the UNKNOWN…

Courage you say?

Got Courage…?

Ding! Yes as that element is woven into this journey.

Another Spoiler – Watch for it…

A funny beautiful sight gag moves the plot along as a chicken passes the two frozen in fear sheep and struts across the road (as in the joke why did the chicken…?)

And so it was that CLAY-PLAY by the Shore, “shored-up” former Suit, KATIE’s resolve AND confidence — allowing her to dive back into her SOURDOUGH BREAD adventure with growing enthusiasm.

And so it was that a seaside PLAY-SESSION with “MAGIC CLAY” (AKA MODEL MAGIC by Crayola), got former Suit, KATIE into a frame of mind conducive to the development of PRESCRIPTIVE recommendations for the COMPANION SOURDOUGH BREAD workshop.

It had been a while since she attended the workshop too, so that was problematic.

Feeding Session…

The “SEED” (AKA Sourdough Starter) she obtained that night has been (and continues to be) nurtured… But there’s hesitation…
She has been stalled in her own prOcess and very much back-burnered it until…

FADE IN:

INT. KATIE’S KITCHEN

It’s early morning and Katie is at her kitchen table with thoughts flying into her JOURNAL. To one side are the initial sketches she made on the 11-by-14s which she glances at occasionally.

KATIE’S MUSINGS
I feel… it’s the right thing… Get it… FEEL… the emphasis is on the feel of… dough-in-hand and shaping it… quite literally being HANDS-ON.

I get it now.

I’ve been hesitating… I’ve got FEAR OF… like the unknown… next steps of making the bread… shaping the bread. And before that, I recall there are … there is a FOLDING thing that happens… a 4-corner… FOLD and wait… Now that wasn’t clear…

She scribbles on the 11-by-14, and then returns to her MUSINGS.

Strategist Katie…

KATIE’S MUSINGS
So I need to lock down the “science-y” stuff … like the CARE & FEEDING of the starter… the HOW & WHY… Also, HOW & WHY for the FOLDING…

Aha! It’s the same for clients back in the day AND the folks in the aisles at HD… the smile followed by, “What are you trying to achieve?” … The “What are you aspiring to do?”

Understanding the WHAT, helps the HOW flow better… And now I’ve identified a GAP in KNOWLEDGE that could be… uh… Most likely IS a SOURCE of HESITATION…

Standing, she grabs her TRIGGER MUG and heads to the counter to FIRE UP the “SPURS” (AKA electric teapot/water boiler).

KATIE INTERNAL
Good one. I’ve rationalized the hesitation as a… lack of understanding of the objective but…

The sound of a chair scraping the floor diverts her attention back to the table.

She shakes her head as she sees her pal, RC the GREMLIN studying the 11-by-14.

RC THE GREMLIN
There’s a FEAR factor in play, I sense… Most definitely… a classic… And then… Of course! She’s BLINKY-CURSORing…

Of course! She’s BLINKY-CURSORing…

KATIE
Uh… Mornin’ Dude! Make yourself comfortable, why don’t ya…

RC THE GREMLIN
Mornin’ Princess! And … yeah, you know I do… I always do… Had to see what you were on about… The steam in the KITCHEN was from your head… not that fine SPURS machine.

Katie laughs.

KATIE
Want some?

RC THE GREMLIN
Actually, a TASTE of your 4A Brew would be… awesome.

She talks while filling a TRIGGER MUG for him.

Trigger Mug…

KATIE

KATIE
A… “come on now.” This sourdough bread thing… just… a starter PLUS water and a blend of flour, right?

What it is..

RC nods.

KATIE
Well actually… there’s a “Yes, and…” to it.

RC eyes the open JOURNAL where Katie has sketched a HEAD-SCRATCHING character, and then glances at what she wrote.

KATIE’S MUSINGS
Now the thing is… The little side trip… the seaside impromptu CLAY-PLAY session served as a reminder… I like … scratch that … I LOVE being HANDS-ON... creating things… by HAND.

Looking back at the 11-by-14, where those key words also appear, he smiles, nods and motions her to keep going.

RC THE GREMLIN
Hands! That’s the “and”… Hands-on… So, it seems to me that you’re at the “hear your ears” portion of the programming, yes?

He points to his.

RC THE GREMLIN
…All ears, I am. Let’s give it a shot, eh?

She nods and smiles. Motioning towards the table.

RC THE GREMLIN
Wherever you’re comfortable. Looks like you could use a stand for a while anyway… You’ve been busy.

Katie’s pent up thoughts cascade out, while leaning against the kitchen counter cradling her beverage.

KATIE
I forget where you were when… While I was still a “SUIT,” I started working weekends pumping out gourmet pizzas–

She smiles at the memory.

…3 hours of uninterrupted joy after a mind numbing week…

KATIE
3 hours of uninterrupted joy after a mind numbing week… It was really…

Smiling and using her hands a bit while talking.

KATIE
Tossing the dough and making dough balls… prepping for the next day… the motion… the satisfying thunk.

Closing her eyes, her hands go through the motions.

KATIE
We’d pull the dough from the MONSTER HOBART mixer… Like a jumbo that…

Points to the KitchenAid on the counter. RC nods

KATIE
The scale was our friend… We’d weigh each lump of dough, and then do shaping magic… There … was this satisfying THUNK-ROTATE-THUNK, before dropping into the holding bin …

RC is laughing as he imitates her movements.

RC THE GREMLIN
Muscle memory!

KATIE
Right? And that was like…

RC THE GREMLIN
Long ago… in a galaxy FAR, FAR. AWAY…

Katie stops and adds more to the 11-by-14…

KATIE
MUSCLE MEMORY!! For sure, that’s something to aspire to in this SOURDOUGH BREAD process. Towards the end of the session, our master referred to it as a journey. Anyway, I couldn’t take my eyes off of him as he gently guided the dough…

With her hands, Katie tries to mimic the motions.

KATIE
What sucks is that it was… too late in our session that evening… my brain… Was like on overload… Definitely could grasp something amazing was happening, but couldn’t translate it into… action… Found myself… reverting to… making dough balls again…

MUSCLE MEMORY !! But shaping is different. And then it was like… TIME’S UP!!

RC THE GREMLIN
Ah… And since that night, you’ve… just focused on FEEDING the STARTER…

KATIE
That part… made sense… to a point… As in, at some point that starter gets incorporated with FLOUR and WATER … shaped and BAKED… To me THAT’s …

RC THE GREMLIN
Unknown… UN-KNOWN TERRITORY, yes?

Katie touches her nose.

KATIE
Spot on.

Then looking over at the package of CRAYOLA MODEL MAGIC, she smiles.

Previously [Breaking out the magic…]

RC THE GREMLIN
Step three??

KATIE
ENJOY! That… out of oven, cooled enough to slice, fresh bread experience… ENJOY!

RC THE GREMLIN
Ah! Gotcha… Though I’d say … if you don’t mind a little REWIND as that’s just my nature… Some of that ENJOY has to be injected into the PROCESS, yes?

KATIE
Indeed. It … will become ENJOYABLE… when I get a better FEEL for THE PROCESS.

She sips.

KATIE
Yup! That’s where I’m at… Like when I was picking up golf. As I got more comfortable with the swing… and my muscle memory took over, I could truly ENJOY… things like… the challenges of the course and terrain… For sure, that’s where the fun is…

Going through the motion of swinging an invisible club.

RC nods.

RC THE GREMLIN
It helps that you (a) don’t keep score and (b) seriously… that carrying fewer sticks is a winner. You move faster … not weighed down AND, decision making is like instantaneous.

Then they return to Katie’s kitchen table.

RC THE GREMLIN
While on the subject, you guys heading out for a …

He motions a golf swing.

KATIE
He mentioned something… Which reminds me… I gotta get my PITTER-PATTER on… Burnin’ Daylight…

She motions upstairs and RC points to the Journal.

RC THE GREMLIN
Do you mind…? I’ll band it and take it upstairs…

Before she can answer, he continues.

RC THE GREMLIN
It’ll help with context for our next…

KATIE
Hear Your Ears session?

RC nods. Katie gives him a thumbs-up takes off.

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. KATIE’S KITCHEN

A short while later, while RC is intently focused on KATIE’S MUSINGs, he feels a presence.

RC THE GREMLIN
Could it be…? Howdy Mr GEAR GUY! Want some…?

RC stands and points to the coffee pot while nudging the JOURNAL to the side (as though to shield from Gear Guy’s eyes.
By the elbow, guides Gear Guy to the coffee pot and then grabs a TRIGGER MUG.

GEAR GUY
Fresh?

RC THE GREMLIN
Well… Close enough… It’s her 4A special. Go ahead and give it a…

They tap mugs and sip.

GEAR GUY
That is a TASTY BEVERAGE!

RC THE GREMLIN
Right? Some serious gourmet shit… Better than that freeze dried, Taster’s Choice …
Voiced like Jules in Pulp Fiction.

GEAR GUY
Yeah… I miss drinking this… serious gourmet shit…

Also, sounding like Jules in Pulp Fiction. Then his attention shifts back to where RC was sitting…

GEAR GUY
And… What are you up to this fine day?

RC THE GREMLIN
Who me? (pause) Curious to find out… She was on such a roll this morning… Had to…

GEAR GUY
Learn more… So… was it… a breakthrough? Caught a glimpse of her bounding down the street… TIGGER-LIKE, so figured something happened.

Moves like Tigger…

RC THE GREMLIN
Oh yeah. See? The words…?

Points to the 11-by-14s (which just so happen to be covering the JOURNAL).

FADE OUT.

And so it was that Suit-in-Transition, MEREDITH (AKA Mer) apparently “cracked the ice” so to speak and one thing truly led to another. Happy Puppy KEE-RA picked up on the new energy that was flowing from his human and, in turn, did what he does when super-excited (cliche maybe, but yes… “SNOOPY-DANCED”).

The SPOTIFY [from Kee-Ra’s RAZR to BLUE-TOOTH SPEAKER) is playing SOULMATE (Lizzo-2019) and an impromptu dance session breaks out JUST as Mer stands to stretch after her PLAY-SESSION.

Welcome to another Mr Pete Wow-Me about a movie that stirred up lots of memories. He had lots to say, so a two-parter is on tap.

A WowMe Story My Mother Would’ve LOVED (Part 1)…

Those of you with Amazon Prime Video have probably seen a “suggested” movie pop up called:

THE SHEEP DETECTIVES (2026)

Per Amazon MGM Studios:

In this witty, new breed of mystery, George (Hugh Jackman) is a shepherd who reads detective novels to his beloved sheep every night, assuming they can’t possibly understand. But when a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep realize they must become the detectives. As they follow the clues and investigate human suspects, they prove that even sheep can be brilliant crime-solvers.

“Starring” Hugh Jackman, it really is a “sheep-filled whodunnit” (per one review on IMDB).

Needless to say, the description alone had me thinking of my late mother… And while viewing, I felt as though she was seated next to me — with her unique laughter erupting at all the silly but true antics of the SHEEP and of some of the foolish behavior of all of the HUMANS.

[chest thump point to the sky]

Hugh Jackson plays GEORGE a simple, hard working Man who loves his flock and they love him.

…If there’s one secret to happiness in my life, it’s taking care of the kindest creatures on earth: sheep!

Kind Creatures…

Pause for a <<< REWIND<<< …

I like to pretend that they follow along, but they’re only sheep, says George.

Putting this movie in context…

Apparently, the Sheep DO understand George.

My mother, certainly understood me and my needs as I was born with a learning disability which we worked together on overcoming.

How? Through a shared love of the mystery genre (I was privileged to have discovered this at a young age too!).

While she was escaping into the literary works of Ellery Queen and Agatha Christie, I leaned into Scholastic’s Encyclopedia Brown and the Hardy Boys (older sis had Nancy Drew).

She intuited that the development of MY thought processes could benefit from this “whodunnit” genre.

And I got myself to slow down my thoughts in order to understand what I had watched/read/experienced — which allowed my natural curiosity and imagination to “kick in.”

To me, the discovering and recognizing facts and patterns of human behavior was an eye-opening. Then, I’d go to work pasting together various pieces of the puzzle to establish a complete picture… The “reality” with my mother spurring me on.

What were some of our shared experiences? Scroll down for an example at the end of this post. Now, it is essential now that we circle back to the focus of this WowMe: The Sheep Detectives.

Sometimes I get so excited that I …give away the story. Here I’ll highlight a few more things and then in a future WowMe, we can compare notes… Okay?? —Mr Pete

EARLY one morning a couple of Sheep —LILY (the smart one) and MOPPLE (the wise one)—discover GEORGE outside of his trailer, apparently DEAD.

Now this is where it gets tricky because sheep have no concept of death outside of the Mystery stories GEORGE has read to them.

…SHEEP believe that its their time to “PASS” they just go out to the pasture then the become a cloud in the sky…

Lily the Wise Sheep decides GEORGE has been murdered, thus there’s a crime needing solving.

And this is where my editor says “STOP NOW” — GO. WATCH. THE. MOVIE.

Clues Allowed…?

Sure, why not. This is about detectives, right?

Here are some observations that you can keep in the back of your mind (like I said, we’ll compare notes later).

• In their search for clues they have to leave the safety and security of their meadow
  (THINK of this as grown children leaving home for the first TIME);
• They first must conquer their FEAR of the UNKNOWN;
• THIS MOVIE reflects many of the Life Skills young adults (heck, all of us) need to develop when entering into the REAL WORLD
