When someone visits your website, they begin forming an impression almost immediately – often before they’ve read much at all.

That first impression isn’t only shaped by your logo, your photography, or the words on the page. It’s influenced by something less obvious: how your website feels to use. Does it feel polished? Clear? Welcoming? Easy to navigate? Does it reflect the same level of care and professionalism that someone would experience working with you in real life?

These details may seem small on their own, but together, they shape how trustworthy your business feels online.

The good news is that building trust through design doesn’t require flashy features or a complete overhaul. More often, it comes down to thoughtful choices that create clarity, consistency, and connection.

Here are a few that make a meaningful difference.

1. Clear messaging helps visitors feel confident

One of the fastest ways to lose trust online is through confusion.

When someone lands on your website, they shouldn’t have to work hard to understand what you offer or whether they’re in the right place. If your messaging feels vague, overly clever, or buried beneath too much information, visitors may leave with uncertainty – even if your service is exactly what they need.

Clear messaging creates a sense of ease. It helps people quickly understand who you help, what you do, and what they can expect from working with you. That clarity feels professional – and professionalism builds trust.

A few places to simplify:

Your headline: Make it immediately clear what you offer

Your supporting copy: Focus on benefits, not buzzwords

Your calls-to-action: Guide visitors toward a natural next step

Your services: Clearly explain what’s included and who it’s for

For example, there’s a big difference between:

Helping brands shine online

and:

Custom website design for boutique studios and creative small businesses

The second is grounded, specific, and reassuring. Visitors know exactly where they are – and that confidence matters.

2. Consistent branding creates a polished first impression

Trust is often built through consistency.

When your website has a cohesive visual identity – thoughtful typography, aligned imagery, intentional colors, and a consistent tone – it feels established. It feels like a business that knows who it is.

On the other hand, when branding feels mismatched or pieced together, it can quietly create friction. A polished logo paired with random stock photos, multiple font styles, or inconsistent design elements can make a website feel unfinished – even if the business itself is exceptional.

Visitors may not consciously notice why something feels off, but they do notice how it makes them feel.

Consistency can look like:

Using a small set of fonts throughout your site

Keeping colors aligned with your brand palette

Choosing imagery that shares a similar tone and style (it can still work with stock images)

Maintaining consistent button styles and design details

Writing in a voice that feels steady and recognizable across pages

A cohesive website quietly communicates care, attention to detail, and professionalism – all qualities people naturally associate with trust.

3. A clean, uncluttered layout feels more professional

When a website feels crowded, it often feels harder to trust.

Too much text packed into one section, too many competing calls-to-action, busy backgrounds, or layouts that try to do everything at once can quickly make visitors feel overwhelmed. And when people feel overwhelmed, they’re more likely to hesitate or leave.

A clean layout does the opposite.

When content has room to breathe, your website feels more thoughtful, polished, and easier to engage with. It creates a sense of calm that helps visitors focus on what matters, rather than wondering where they should look next.

A cleaner website often includes:

Generous spacing between sections so content doesn’t feel cramped

Clear headings that guide visitors naturally through the page

Shorter paragraphs that are easier to scan and absorb

A focused visual hierarchy so the most important information stands out

Fewer competing elements on the page, allowing each section to have purpose

Intentional use of imagery that supports the message without overwhelming it

It helps your content breathe, creates visual balance, and gives your website a more elevated, intentional feel. In many cases, simplicity reads as confidence – and confidence builds trust.

4. Simple navigation makes your website feel easy to use

When navigation is cluttered, confusing, or overwhelming, visitors have to work harder than they should. And when people have to work harder, hesitation tends to follow.

Clear navigation creates a calmer experience. It quietly tells visitors, you’re in the right place – and here’s where to go next.

That sense of ease matters more than many business owners realize because trust is closely tied to how supported someone feels while interacting with your brand.

Simple navigation usually includes:

Straightforward menu labels

A manageable number of top-level pages

Clear pathways to important information

Calls-to-action that feel natural and easy to find

A mobile experience that’s just as intuitive as desktop

A trustworthy website feels easy to move through. And when your website feels easy to use, your business feels more professional and dependable as a result.

5. Small details leave a lasting impression

Often, trust is built in the details people barely notice – but absolutely feel.

These are the quiet finishing touches that make a website feel cared for (tiny but powerful). They signal that someone has taken time to think through the experience, polish the edges, and create something intentional.

Small details that make a big difference:

Readable fonts and comfortable spacing

Buttons that feel consistent throughout the site

Working links and polished forms

Professional email addresses tied to your domain

Testimonials placed thoughtfully where they support decision-making

A smooth, easy-to-read mobile experience

None of these things are flashy, and that’s exactly the point.

Trust rarely comes from dramatic design moments. More often, it’s built through thoughtful details that make visitors feel comfortable, supported, and confident in what they’re seeing.

Thoughtful design builds confidence

A trustworthy website doesn’t need to be complicated. In many cases, it’s the simplest choices – clear messaging, cohesive branding, clean navigation, and thoughtful details – that have the greatest impact.

When those pieces work together, your website feels polished, welcoming, and aligned with the quality of your business. And when visitors feel that sense of care and confidence, reaching out becomes much easier.

If your current website feels like it’s missing that sense of polish or connection, it may simply need a more intentional foundation.

Most service-based business owners have a services page that technically checks the boxes. It outlines what they offer, explains how someone can work with them, and includes a call-to-action at the bottom.

On the surface, everything seems fine – and yet inquiries feel inconsistent.

Discovery or consultation calls require more explanation than expected. You find yourself clarifying details that are already written on the page.

When that happens, it’s rarely a reflection of the quality of your services. More often, it points to a lack of clarity in how those services are presented.

An unclear services page rarely causes obvious problems. Instead, it creates small moments of hesitation – and over time, those moments can quietly affect your inquiries and growth.

Let’s look at what that can end up costing you.

Cost #1: Confusion That Slows Decision-Making

When someone lands on your services page, they’re not casually browsing. They’re evaluating whether or not to take the next step.

They want to quickly understand what you offer, who it’s for, and how it solves their specific problem. If that information feels vague or scattered, even slightly, it interrupts their decision-making.

Often, that confusion shows up in small ways:

They reread sections trying to piece things together

They click away to “think about it”

They leave the page intending to come back later

Clarity builds confidence. When your services are clearly defined and easy to understand, people move forward with far less hesitation.

Cost #2: The Wrong Inquiries (Or Too Many Clarifying Questions)

An unclear services page leaves room for interpretation.

When details feel broad or loosely defined, potential clients start filling in the gaps on their own. That’s when you begin receiving emails asking for services you don’t actually offer, or requests that fall outside your scope.

This doesn’t mean people aren’t interested. It simply means your positioning isn’t filtering effectively.

You might notice patterns like:

“Do you also offer…?”

“Can you customize this to include…?”

“I’m not sure which option applies to me.”

A strategically written services page reduces those questions before they’re ever asked. It helps the right clients recognize themselves immediately, while gently steering others in a different direction.

That kind of clarity saves time and energy on both sides.

Cost #3: Undervalued Work

When services are described primarily through logistics – what’s included, how many sessions, how long the process lasts – the focus shifts toward features instead of impact.

While those details matter, they rarely communicate the full value of your work.

Before outlining what’s included, your services page should clearly articulate who the offer is for and what transformation or outcome someone can expect. Without that context, your work can appear transactional rather than strategic.

Over time, this affects more than conversions. It influences how people perceive your pricing, your expertise, and the overall level at which you operate.

Clear positioning supports confident value. Vague descriptions can unintentionally diminish it.

Cost #4: A Subtle Disconnect From Your Own Website

Sometimes the cost of an unclear services page isn’t external. It’s internal.

If you hesitate before sending someone your link, feel the need to verbally explain your process beyond what’s written, or sense that your page doesn’t fully represent your experience, that’s important feedback.

This often happens when your business has grown, but your website hasn’t quite caught up. Your services may feel clearer than they used to. Your niche may be more refined. You may simply communicate your value more confidently now than you did when you first wrote the page.

If that feels familiar, it may be worth reading How to Know If You’ve Outgrown Your DIY Website, because unclear messaging is often a reflection of broader evolution in your business.

When your website no longer reflects your level of clarity, it can quietly affect how you show up.

Why This Happens (Especially With DIY Sites)

Most unclear services pages aren’t the result of carelessness. They’re the result of timing.

Many business owners write their original website copy during the early stages of building. At that point, offers are still being refined. Niches are still forming. Confidence is still growing.

A DIY website allows you to launch quickly, which is incredibly valuable. But what works in year one doesn’t always support year four.

As your business evolves, older messaging can begin to feel overly broad or slightly misaligned. You may also be too close to your own work to recognize what’s unclear. What feels obvious to you may not feel obvious to someone encountering your services for the first time.

Clarity often requires stepping back and viewing your work through fresh eyes.

What Clarity Creates

When your services page is clear, structured, and aligned with your current positioning, the entire client journey feels smoother.

People understand exactly what you offer and whether it fits their needs. They feel reassured rather than uncertain. They move through the page with momentum instead of hesitation.

A clear services page tends to:

Attract better-aligned inquiries

Reduce unnecessary back-and-forth

Strengthen trust early

Support confident pricing conversations

Simplify your overall sales process

If you’re unsure what that structure should look like, I walk through it in more detail in 5 Essentials for a Services Page That Converts, where we break down the foundational elements that make a services page truly effective.

Bringing It Back to Strategy

Your services page carries significant weight in your overall website strategy. It often becomes the deciding factor between interest and inquiry.

When clarity is missing, the impact may not feel dramatic – but it compounds over time in the form of missed opportunities and extra explanation.

When clarity is present, your website feels cohesive and intentional. It supports your growth instead of creating extra explanation.

If you’re recognizing small signs of confusion or misalignment, refining your services page may be the next step.

There’s something meaningful about building your first website yourself.

For many small business owners, a DIY website represents the early stage of growth – figuring things out, testing ideas, learning as you go. It gets your business online. It gives you visibility. It allows you to start before everything feels perfectly polished.

And in that season, it’s exactly what you need.

But as your business evolves, something may begin to feel slightly misaligned. Your business has grown. Your confidence has strengthened. Your services feel more refined. Yet your website still reflects an earlier version of you.

Outgrowing your DIY website isn’t dramatic. It’s often subtle. And it’s usually a sign that you’ve evolved.

Here are a few ways to recognize when that shift has happened.

Sign #1: Your Business Has Elevated But Your Website Hasn’t

Growth doesn’t always happen all at once. Sometimes it’s gradual – a price increase here, a niche refinement there, a clearer sense of who you want to work with.

In 2020, my brand really shifted. I began elevating my services, refining my positioning, and stepping into a more strategic direction in my business. The work felt more mature and intentional.

But for a period of time, my website didn’t reflect that evolution.

It wasn’t that the original version was wrong. It had served its purpose. It supported the stage I was in when I built it. But as the business grew, the gap between who I had become and what my website communicated started to widen.

This is often the first sign you’ve outgrown your DIY website.

Your business may have elevated in ways like:

Refining your niche

Raising your prices

Offering a more premium experience

Attracting a different level of client

When those shifts happen internally, your website should reflect them externally.

Sign #2: You Avoid Sending People to Your Website

This sign is less about functionality and more about feeling.

If you hesitate before sharing your link, add disclaimers like “I’m updating that soon,” or default to sending people to Instagram instead, it’s worth paying attention to that instinct.

Your website should feel like a confident extension of your business. It should represent the level you’re operating at now – not the version of you from years ago.

When there’s a disconnect, you feel it.

Sign #3: Your Website Feels Hard to Update or Expand

DIY templates are wonderful in the beginning because they allow flexibility and speed. But over time, you may notice that making changes feels more complicated than it should.

Instead of cleanly adding a new service or refining your navigation, you find yourself layering updates on top of older updates. Pages feel crowded. The structure starts to feel patchworked rather than intentional.

You might notice things like:

Adding a new offer requires rearranging multiple sections

Your navigation feels cluttered

Your template limits layout flexibility

You’re working around the design instead of with it

A website that once felt empowering can begin to feel restrictive. That shift often signals that you’ve grown beyond the foundation you originally built.

Sign #4: Your Messaging Has Evolved (But Your Website Hasn’t)

As business owners gain experience, clarity deepens.

You begin to understand your ideal clients more clearly. You refine your process. You develop stronger results. Your confidence in what you offer increases.

But if your website copy hasn’t been updated to reflect that growth, it may still sound more generic than your actual expertise.

This kind of misalignment is subtle but powerful. When your messaging doesn’t match your current positioning, it can unintentionally undersell the level you’re operating at now.

Your website should communicate the clarity you’ve gained through your experience.

Sign #5: You’re Ready for More – And Your Website Isn’t Helping You Get There

Eventually, growth brings new goals.

You may want more qualified inquiries, higher-paying clients, a smoother booking experience, or stronger visibility in search. You may feel ready for a more elevated presence online.

If your current website feels like it’s simply existing rather than actively supporting those goals, that’s worth noticing.

A DIY site often works beautifully in the early stages because the goal is visibility. At a certain point, however, visibility isn’t enough. You need structure, strategy, and intentional design decisions that support where you’re headed next.

That transition is often the moment when business owners realize they’ve outgrown what they originally built themselves.

What Outgrowing Your DIY Website Actually Means

Outgrowing your DIY website doesn’t mean you did something wrong.

In many cases, building it yourself was the right decision at the time. It helped you launch. It gave you momentum. It supported you in your early growth.

But businesses evolve.

What worked when you were just getting started may not support you at your current level. As your services mature and your goals expand, your website needs to reflect that shift.

Outgrowing your website is rarely about aesthetics alone. It’s about alignment.

When your online presence matches the level of your business, everything feels more cohesive – and moving forward becomes much simpler.

If you’re in that in-between stage – where your business has grown but your website hasn’t quite caught up – exploring a more strategic approach might be the next right step. You can learn more about our custom website design services and what the process looks like.

A website can look beautiful and still not work. It can have polished fonts, cohesive colors, and professional photos – and still leave you wondering why inquiries feel inconsistent.

If you’ve ever thought, “My site looks nice…but it’s not really doing anything”, that’s usually the gap between design and strategic website design.

Strategic website design is rooted in thoughtful decisions – about structure, messaging, flow, and functionality – so your website actively supports the business you’ve built. Every element has a purpose. Every page has a role to play.

Let’s walk through what that really includes.

It Starts With Structure (Not Aesthetics)

Before colors, typography, or imagery are chosen, strategic website design begins with structure.

Structure shapes how someone moves through your site. It determines the order of information, the hierarchy of pages, and how questions are answered as they naturally arise. When structure is clear, your website feels easy. When it’s not, visitors feel like they’re piecing things together themselves.

For example, a boutique fitness studio owner might need a very different flow than another type of service-based business.

A fitness studio site often needs to guide someone like this:

Homepage → Class types or pricing → Schedule → Book now

While a service-based business (such as a doula) might need:

Homepage → Services overview → Detailed service page → Booking or Inquiry

That flow is intentional. It reflects how real people think and make decisions – and that’s the foundation of strategic website design.

Without that clarity, even the most beautiful layout can feel confusing.

Clear Decision Pathways (So People Know What to Do Next)

One of the biggest differences between a pretty website and a strategic one is decision clarity.

When someone lands on a page, they shouldn’t have to ask themselves, “What do I do now?” The next step should feel natural and obvious.

Every core page should clearly communicate:

Who this is for

What problem it solves

What the next step is

That doesn’t mean every section needs a bold, blinking call-to-action. It means the path feels obvious.

For a fitness studio, that might mean making booking buttons consistent and easy to find, with minimal friction between interest and checkout.

For a lactation consultant, it might mean placing insurance verification information exactly where someone naturally asks, “Is this covered?”

Strategic website design reduces hesitation. And when hesitation is reduced, taking action feels simpler.

Messaging That Aligns With Your Positioning

Design alone cannot clarify what you do.

As businesses grow, services evolve. Pricing changes. Positioning shifts. Your website should reflect that growth with clarity and confidence.

Instead of using vague phrases or not being straightforward with your language, strategic messaging focuses on:

Clear outcomes

Defined services

Specific audiences

Simple language

When someone lands on your site, they should quickly understand what you do and whether it’s right for them.

That kind of clarity builds trust far more effectively than decorative elements ever could.

Mobile-First Thinking (Not Just Responsive Design)

Most visitors are viewing your site on their phones.

They’re clicking from Instagram. Searching between appointments. Browsing while multitasking. Strategic website design considers how your content feels in that context.

Mobile-first thinking includes:

Thumb-friendly buttons

Clean, uncluttered sections

Thoughtful spacing

Immediate access to booking or inquiry

For fitness studios, that often means simplifying the path to scheduling a class.

For service providers, it may mean ensuring inquiry forms feel approachable and not overwhelming.

If someone has to pinch, zoom, or hunt for your contact form, they’ll likely leave. Strategic website design anticipates that – and removes the friction before it happens.

Integration Planning That Feels Seamless

Integrations are where many websites start to feel disjointed.

A booking platform, insurance portal, scheduling tool, or CRM may function correctly – but if it feels disconnected from the rest of your site, it interrupts the experience you’ve worked hard to create.

Strategic website design includes thoughtful integration planning from the beginning. That means considering how external tools visually and functionally fit into your brand experience.

It considers:

Where the integration lives on the page

How many clicks it takes to use

Whether it visually matches your brand

If it disrupts or supports the flow

Your booking platform or intake form shouldn’t feel like an afterthought. It should feel like a natural extension of your website – aligned visually, placed intentionally, and easy to use.

When integrations are planned carefully, the transition between your site and your tools feels seamless.

A Website Built for Growth

A strategic website isn’t built just to go live. It’s built to grow.

Your business will evolve. Your offers may expand. You might add a blog, a digital product, or a new service tier.

Strategic website design accounts for that growth from the beginning. It creates a flexible foundation that can expand without feeling patched together later. Instead of rebuilding every time you level up, you’re building something designed to evolve with you.

Signs Your Website May Be Missing Strategy

If your website feels slightly off but you can’t quite explain why, it may be helpful to step back and evaluate how it’s functioning, not just how it looks.

Sometimes the issues are subtle. Sometimes they show up in patterns over time.

You might notice:

You’re getting traffic but not consistent inquiries

Clients ask questions that are already addressed on your site

Your booking or inquiry process feels clunky

Your services have evolved, but your website hasn’t

You hesitate before sharing your link

When these patterns appear, they often point back to structure, clarity, or flow – the foundational elements of strategic website design.

Where Strategy Changes Everything

When a website is built with intention, it feels different.

It feels calm. It feels clear. It feels easy to navigate.

Visitors don’t have to search for answers or guess what to do next. They move through the site naturally, building trust along the way.

That’s what strategic website design truly includes – thoughtful decisions that create clarity, cohesion, and forward momentum for your business.

If your current site feels polished but disconnected from where you’re headed next, it might be time to explore what strategic website design could look like – built around your goals, your audience, and your growth.

A beautiful website is great. But a beautiful and strategic website? That’s where the magic happens.

If you’ve ever found yourself saying, “My site looks nice, but it doesn’t really do anything for my business”, you’re not alone. Many small business owners come to us with gorgeous visuals that aren’t converting, or with DIY sites that feel misaligned with the experience they offer in real life. That disconnect usually comes down to one core thing: the difference between design and strategy.

Let’s walk through what each of these actually means –and why they’re both essential to building a site that feels aligned and helps move your business forward.

What is Website Design?

Website design is the visual layer. It includes the layout, fonts, colors, imagery, and overall aesthetic of your site. Done well, it reflects your brand personality, creates an emotional connection, and makes a strong first impression. It’s what makes someone pause and say, “Wow, this feels like you”.

Design is what most people notice first, and it’s an incredibly important piece of the puzzle. A clean, modern, and user-friendly site builds trust quickly. It helps your business feel credible, consistent, and aligned. But on its own, even the most beautiful site can fall flat if it doesn’t guide your visitors anywhere.

That’s where strategy comes in.

What Is Website Strategy?

Website strategy is the foundation beneath the visuals. It focuses on structure, flow, usability, and the specific goals of your site. It’s what turns a website into a tool for connection, conversion, and clarity.

Strategy includes creating a sitemap (the outline of all the pages your site needs), understanding how users will move through your site, and defining the purpose of each page. It’s also about making sure your site meets your audience where they are and gives them clear, confidence-building steps to take.

Without strategy, a site might look good – but it won’t do much. With strategy, your site works harder for you. It becomes a thoughtful guide that helps visitors go from curious to committed.

How Design and Strategy Work Together

Think of design as the outfit and strategy as the tailored fit and purpose behind it. One without the other can feel either unpolished or ineffective.

When design and strategy work in sync, you get a site that not only looks beautiful, but is intentionally built to support your goals. It’s the difference between a site that’s just nice to look at – and one that helps your audience take action.

A strategic website:

Guides users through a clear path

Reinforces your messaging at every step

Aligns with how your audience thinks, feels, and chooses

And when wrapped in beautiful design? That’s when everything clicks.

What This Looks Like in Our Process

At Jelly Design Studio, strategy is baked into every project from the very beginning. Before we touch any visuals, we start with conversations. We get to know you, your business, what’s currently working (and what isn’t), and how your clients are interacting with your site.

From there, we build a custom sitemap. This is more than just a list of pages. It’s a strategic plan that outlines:

What pages your site needs

The goal of each page

How each one fits into the overall user journey

We think through how a visitor will move through the site: from the homepage, to services, to inquiry. Every step is purposeful.

Once the sitemap is approved, we shift into content planning. Whether clients are bringing their own content, writing it themselves, or repurposing what they have, we provide a clear, structured worksheet for each page. These worksheets include:

A breakdown of what content is needed (and why it matters)

Notes on structure and flow to support the user journey

Optional examples or prompts to spark ideas

We’re not copywriters, and we’re upfront about that. But we do help make sure the content aligns with your goals and supports the design. If needed, we also assist in gently reworking existing content to better fit the strategy we’ve outlined together.

This collaboration is what keeps the process feeling clear and supportive – never overwhelming.

Why Strategy Matters (Especially for Small Businesses)

If your site feels pretty but purposeless, chances are it’s missing a strategic foundation. And that’s not your fault. Most business owners are never taught how websites should actually work.

Strategy brings that missing layer of clarity. It ensures your content, design, and structure all support one another. It helps visitors move through your site with ease – and gives you confidence that your site is doing its job.

Whether you’re launching for the first time or starting fresh after a rebrand, building with strategy in mind is one of the smartest investments you can make.

Final Thoughts: You Deserve a Website That Works and Wows

Design makes your site look good. Strategy makes it work hard. And when those two come together? That’s when your website starts to feel like a true extension of your business.

So if your current site isn’t pulling its weight – or if you’re ready to build something that reflects who you are now – learn more about our website design services and let’s walk through it together.

If you’ve ever updated a page name, deleted an old service, or restructured your site, there’s a sneaky little issue that can pop up: broken links.

Also known as 404 errors, these dead ends happen when someone clicks or visits a page that no longer exists on your site – and over time, they can quietly chip away at your SEO, user experience, and overall site credibility.

The good news? Fixing them is easier than you might think. It just takes one simple tool: a 301 redirect.

What’s a 301 Redirect (And Why Should You Care)?

In simple terms, a 301 redirect automatically sends visitors (and search engines) to a new page when the original one is no longer available. Instead of landing on an error page, they’re seamlessly taken to the right place.

This is especially helpful when you:

Rename a page (like changing /services to /work-with-me)

Delete an outdated blog post or offer

Move content from one page to another

Why it matters:

Preserves your SEO value. You don’t lose credit for the traffic your old page had.

Prevents visitor frustration.

Keeps your site feeling clean, current, and professional.

When You’d Want to Use a Redirect

It’s easy to forget about redirects – especially when you’re focused on updating content, refreshing your services, or simply cleaning up your site. But every time a page is deleted, renamed, or moved, there’s a chance someone could land on a broken link.

Adding a redirect in those moments helps ensure your visitors (and Google) always find the right page – even if the old one is long gone.

Here are a few examples:

You updated your services and deleted a few old packages

You changed your About page from /about to /meet-the-founder

You archived a seasonal sales page

You split one long blog post into two shorter ones

Tip: Try to set up redirects at the same time you’re making edits – it’s one of those small habits that keeps your site running smoothly behind the scenes.

How to Set Up a 301 Redirect (WordPress & Squarespace)

You don’t need to be a developer to do this – it’s a simple process you can handle in just a few clicks. Below you’ll find step-by-step instructions for both WordPress and Squarespace, plus video tutorials embedded below if you prefer to follow along visually.

For WordPress Users (using the Redirection plugin):

In your dashboard, go to Tools → Redirection

Under “Add New Redirect”, enter:

Target URL: where you want visitors to go instead

Click Add Redirect – and you’re done!

For Squarespace Users:

Go to Settings (gear icon) → Developer Tools → URL Mappings

Add a new line using this format:
/old-page → /new-page 301

Click Save

Extra Tips to Keep Your Redirects Working Smoothly

Redirects are simple to set up – but there are a few easy-to-miss details that can trip things up. Here’s how to avoid common mistakes and keep things running cleanly behind the scenes:

Be consistent with slashes. /about and /about/ are treated as different URLs.

Use relative URLs in Squarespace – that means just the part after .com (like /services, not www.yoursite.com/services).

It’s case-sensitive. Double-check capitalization, especially for older links.

Avoid chaining redirects. Don’t link Old → New → Newer. Go straight from the original to the current URL.

Watch for typos. A single wrong character can break the link entirely.

Test each redirect after you set it up. Make sure it’s pointing where you expect.

Check for hidden broken links using a free tool like this one from AtomSEO. It’s a quick way to scan your entire site after a refresh or launch.

You Don’t Have to Be “Techy” to Be Strategic

Redirects might live behind the scenes – but they quietly protect your site’s user experience and search performance. If you’re updating, deleting, or renaming pages, this is one of those small details that makes a big difference.Want more behind-the-scenes tips like this?

If you’re working on building trust with potential clients, few things are more powerful than the words of your past clients. Testimonials speak to the quality of your work, and they reflect how your clients felt throughout the experience. For service-based businesses, that emotional connection often tips the scale from “maybe” to “yes”.

Still, asking for a testimonial can feel a little…awkward. So let’s make it feel simpler and more natural. This guide will walk you through why testimonials matter, where to use them, and how to ask for them in a way that feels aligned with your brand.

Why Client Testimonials Matter (Especially for Service-Based Businesses)

For wellness coaches, doulas, consultants, fitness instructors, and other service-based business owners, your work is personal – and your future clients are looking for more than a pretty website or list of services. They want to feel a sense of trust before they book with you.

That’s where client testimonials come in. They’re one of the most powerful forms of social proof you can offer.

Here’s what testimonials do for you:

Build emotional trust: Potential clients want to hear from real people who’ve worked with you and how it made them feel.

Reduce decision anxiety: When someone’s unsure about booking, a thoughtful testimonial can tip them toward taking that next step.

Showcase transformation: A great testimonial reflects what changed – more clarity, less stress, a new milestone. It makes your service feel real and relatable.

Reflect the experience: Was the process smooth and supportive? Did the client feel cared for? These stories speak louder than any bullet point list of features.

If you’re a fitness studio owner, creative entrepreneur, or consultant, your clients aren’t just buying your service – they’re investing in the experience and energy you bring. Testimonials offer a window into that.

Where to Use Testimonials on Your Website

Testimonials shouldn’t be hidden away on one static page. The most effective ones are woven throughout your site to guide your reader’s journey.

Here’s where to use them strategically:

Homepage: Place a standout testimonial near your main call-to-action – think of it like a gentle nudge of reassurance.

Services Page: Align testimonials with each service. If someone loved your postpartum coaching or your signature rowing class, feature their words directly beside that offer.

About Page: Include a short quote that reinforces your approach or values. This is where prospective clients look to connect with you as a human.

Contact Page: Reassure readers by showcasing a quote from someone who was happy they reached out and felt supported through the process.

Opt-In Pages or Lead Magnet Landing Pages: Add a quote that confirms the value of your resources or mini offers.

Bonus: Use Testimonials Beyond Your Website

Instagram & Facebook: Turn testimonials into quote graphics or video clips with client permission.

LinkedIn: Share longer-form client stories in posts to build credibility.

Newsletters: Feature a mini case study or testimonial in your email updates.

People trust people – and sharing kind words across platforms helps build that trust steadily over time.

What Makes a Testimonial Great

Not all testimonials are created equal. The best ones are specific, honest, and focused on the client’s experience – not your list of services.

Here’s what to look for:

Clarity on their problem: What challenge or need brought them to you?

Description of your process: Did they feel heard, supported, empowered?

Transformation or outcome: What shifted for them emotionally, physically, or in their business?

Relatability: Would someone with similar hesitations see themselves in this story?

When a testimonial hits those notes, it becomes a powerful reflection of what your future clients are hoping to find – like these testimonials featured throughout our site.

How to Ask for a Testimonial (Without Making It Weird)

For a long time, I didn’t ask for testimonials. Not because I didn’t care – but because I didn’t know how to ask without it feeling awkward. I told myself, “If they want to write one, they will.” And a few did. But most didn’t – not because they weren’t happy, but because life gets busy.

It finally clicked for me: if someone has a great experience, they’re usually more than happy to put it into words. They just need a clear ask and a thoughtful prompt.

Throughout the years I’ve learned that the best time to ask is shortly after your service ends – ideally when your client has experienced a positive result or milestone. Keep the tone warm, personal, and client-centered.

Here’s an email you can personalize:

Subject: Would you mind sharing a few words?

It was such a joy to work with you! I’ve loved watching [insert result: your progress, your launch, your transformation, etc.] unfold.

If you’re open to it, I’d be so grateful for a short testimonial about your experience. You can write freely, or use a few prompts below to guide your thoughts:

What made you decide to reach out?

How did the process feel for you?

What shifted for you after working together?

What would you tell someone who’s considering working with me?

If you have a photo of yourself you’d like to include with the testimonial, feel free to attach it – we may use it alongside your words on our website.

No rush, and absolutely no pressure. Thank you again for your trust.

The Front Door of Your Brand

Your homepage is one of the most important pages on your website. For many of your visitors, it’s where your brand makes its first impression – and where someone decides whether to learn more, explore your services, or click away.

That decision happens fast. Which means your homepage needs to quickly communicate who you are, what you do, and how you help – without feeling cluttered or overwhelming. When it’s thoughtfully designed, your homepage becomes a clear, confident guide. It sets the tone for your site, makes your audience feel seen, and helps them take the next step with ease.

If your homepage isn’t doing that yet – don’t worry. With a few simple changes, you can make it more effective and aligned.

What a Homepage Should Do

Think of your homepage as your digital front porch. It’s where your business says hello and invites visitors in. Beyond visuals and layout, a strong homepage sets the emotional tone and helps visitors decide whether they’ve found what they’re looking for.

Before you worry about fancy animations or flashy graphics, ask yourself:

Does this page communicate my purpose?

Does it feel like an extension of how I work with clients?

Is it easy to navigate and understand?

Because a good homepage doesn’t just look good – it works. It creates trust, clarity, and connection in just a few scrolls.

Here’s what a homepage should do:

Feel warm and welcoming – like a real conversation, not a pitch

Reflect your brand’s tone, values, and visual identity

Quickly show visitors they’re in the right place

Offer a clear and easy next step (book, explore, etc.)

Homepage Design Best Practices (with Common Pitfalls to Avoid)

Most homepage struggles come down to clarity – not whether the design is “good enough”, but whether it’s working strategically. A few intentional changes can completely shift how your site performs.

Let’s look at the homepage must-haves that make the biggest difference – and how to avoid common missteps along the way.

1. Start with a Clear Headline

Your homepage headline is your first greeting – and it should make someone feel seen. Within just a few words, your headline should clearly say what you do and who you do it for.

This is not the place to get poetic or mysterious. You want a visitor to know, without having to scroll or guess, that they’re in the right place.

Do: Use specific, clear language that reflects your offer and audience.

Example: “Modern pilates classes for busy moms who want to feel strong, connected, and supported.”

Avoid: Generic phrases like “Welcome to our website” or “Empowering wellness for everyone”. These lack clarity and don’t tell your visitor what to expect.

A great headline acts like a filter – it draws in the right people and gently turns away the rest. And that’s a good thing.

2. Add a Brief, Relatable Intro

Right under your headline, give visitors a quick reason to keep reading. This intro is your opportunity to briefly share your purpose and how you help.

It’s not a full story – just a few lines that show your values, personality, or mission.

Do: Speak directly to your ideal client. Share what they can expect from working with you.

Example: “Our studio was built for real bodies and real life – where you don’t have to be ‘fit enough’ to belong. Whether you’re returning to movement or starting fresh, we’ll meet you where you are.” (For a pilates or wellness studio)

Avoid: Long paragraphs or overly detailed bios. That information belongs on your About page.

Think of this intro like a “start here” moment – something that shows your reader you understand them.

3. Use Warm, Aligned Visuals

Visuals do more than look pretty – they build trust. A well-chosen image can say more about your brand than a paragraph ever could.

Do: Use imagery that reflects your personality, space, or style. This might include:

Lifestyle portraits (you with clients, working, or in your environment)

Flat lays or product shots with a consistent aesthetic

Stock images that feel natural and brand-aligned

Example: A photo of a clothing boutique owner folding a new seasonal collection, in natural light, in a cozy space. It feels like you’re stepping into the shop.

Avoid: Overly polished, corporate stock photos or visuals that feel stiff or disconnected from your actual work.

You don’t need a full brand photoshoot to get started. Even one well-chosen image can bring personality to your homepage.

4. Include One Clear Call-to-Action (CTA)

Once someone understands what you do, what’s the next step you want them to take? Your CTA should guide visitors toward that action – without making them scroll around to find it.

Do: Choose one action for your homepage. Make it easy to spot, and repeat it if needed.

Examples:

“Book Your Free Nutrition Consult”

“Explore My Services”

“Start Your Branding Project”

Avoid: Multiple CTAs fighting for attention (“Read my blog”, “Shop now”, “Join the list”) or hiding your CTA in long paragraphs.

A clear CTA is one of the simplest ways to improve homepage performance. Don’t be afraid to be direct – it’s helpful, not pushy.

5. Keep Navigation Simple and Intuitive

Your menu doesn’t need to do everything. In fact, when it tries to it often makes the visitor do more work, not less.

Do: Stick to 5-7 clear items. Prioritize the pages most visitors need: Home, About, Services, Booking, Contact.

Avoid: Long dropdowns, custom labels that aren’t self-explanatory, or links to outdated pages.

Example: You can get creative with your labels – “My Journey” or “Behind the Brand” can work beautifully – just make sure they’re clear to a new visitor. Your goal is to help people understand where they’ll land when they click.

Clear navigation supports your user’s journey – and shows that you value their time.

6. Make It Feel Like You

Your homepage should feel like a natural extension of the experience your clients get when they work with you. That includes your visuals, tone of voice, layout, and color palette.

Do: Let your personality come through in subtle ways – whether that’s through conversational copy, a signature color, or a layout that reflects how you work.

Example: A lactation consultant with a soft, nurturing brand tone might use gentle colors, simple language, and calming photos that reflect her approach.

Avoid: Design templates or copy-and-paste content that doesn’t match your energy, values, or audience.

When your homepage feels consistent with who you are, it builds trust – and sets the tone for every interaction that follows.

The Feel-Good Homepage Test

Not sure if your homepage is working for you? Here’s a quick self-check:

Can someone understand what I do and who I help in 5 seconds?

Does the copy and imagery sound and feel like my brand?

Is there one clear action step for them to take?

Does it feel easy to navigate?

Would I feel proud to send this link to a potential client?

If any of these questions feel shaky, your homepage might just need a little tuning. Small updates can create a lot more clarity and confidence for both you and your audience.

It Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

Your homepage isn’t meant to say everything. It’s meant to say the right things, clearly – and give your audience an easy way to connect or take the next step.

If your homepage feels a little off, you’re not alone. Most websites evolve over time. And the great news? A few thoughtful changes can make your homepage more aligned, more strategic, and easier to love.

If you’re choosing between WordPress, Squarespace, and Shopify, it can feel like there’s a lot riding on the decision. These platforms each offer something different – and choosing the right one comes down to how your business runs, what your goals are, and how hands-on you want to be with managing your site.

In this post, we’ll walk through the main differences between these platforms so you can make a choice that truly supports your business – now and as you grow.

What to Consider Before Choosing

There’s no universal “right” platform – but there is one that will better support how you work. Taking time to reflect on your business needs can make the process feel less overwhelming and more strategic.

Here are a few helpful questions to guide your thinking:

What does my business do? (Sell products? Book clients? Share content?)

How comfortable am I with tech setup and maintenance?

Do I need something simple and low-maintenance, or highly flexible?

Will I need tools like booking, blogging, ecommerce, or lead magnets?

How do I see my website evolving in the next 1-3 years?

You don’t need to have all the answers right away – but even a rough idea of what you need can point us in the right direction. And if you’re feeling unsure, that’s completely normal. This is something we explore together during the planning phase.

WordPress (Self-Hosted)

WordPress is a powerful, flexible platform that gives you full control over how your site looks, functions, and grows over time. It’s best suited for businesses that need design flexibility, room to grow, and the ability to access a wide range of features – especially if content strategy plays a key role in your marketing.

Pros:

Fully customizable (design, layout, and functionality)

Huge plugin library for added features

Excellent for SEO and content strategy

Scales well as your business evolves

Cons:

Setup requires more pieces (hosting, theme, maintenance)

Manual updates and backups needed

Might need a developer or designer for best results

Important Note: There are two versions of WordPress:

WordPress.org (self-hosted) – more flexible and powerful (the one we work on)

WordPress.com (hosted) – easier to start, but more limited (and can get expensive)

If you’re unsure which one is right, check out our post: WordPress.com vs WordPress.org: Which One Should You Use?

WordPress is a great option for businesses that want to invest in a custom site that can grow with them. It requires a bit more setup, but the flexibility is worth it if you need advanced features or a strong SEO foundation.

Squarespace

Squarespace is known for its all-in-one approach, clean templates, and ease of use. It’s a favorite among service-based businesses, creatives, and those who want to launch a polished site without dealing with too many moving parts.

Pros:

All-in-one platform (no separate hosting needed)

Drag-and-drop builder that’s easy to use

Beautiful templates with modern, polished design

Great for portfolios, coaches, consultants, and other service providers

Cons:

Less flexible than WordPress for custom design or functionality

Some third-party tools require workarounds

Not ideal for advanced e-commerce needs (but works well for courses and smaller online shops)

If you value simplicity and want to maintain your site on your own, Squarespace offers a balance of style and function that’s easy to manage. It may not support every customization, but it handles the essentials very well.

Shopify

Shopify was built with ecommerce in mind, making it the top choice for businesses that sell physical or digital products. It includes everything you need to run an online store, from inventory tracking to secure payment options.

Pros:

Built specifically for online selling

Inventory, shipping, and payment tools are all built-in

Secure and scalable for growing shops

Easy POS integration for in-person selling

Cons:

Monthly subscription + extra app costs

Less ideal for non-ecommerce businesses

May need design help to get the look you want

If your business is product-focused, Shopify can handle both the technical and operational sides of your store. It’s a platform that grows with you – offering powerful features without requiring a lot of backend setup.

Quick Comparison Chart

Feature

WordPress (Self-Hosted)

Squarespace

Shopify

Best For

Custom, content-heavy sites

Service businesses, portfolios

Ecommerce stores

Ease of Use

Moderate to Advanced

Beginner-Friendly

Moderate

Design Flexibility

Very High

High

Moderate

Ecommerce Tools

Optional via plugins

Basic. Not ideal for larger inventory.

Advanced

Blogging

Excellent

Great

Limited

Maintenance

Required

None

Minimal

Monthly Cost

Varies (hosting + plugins)

$25-$56/month

$39+/month + app fees

Tech Involvement

Moderate-High

Low

Moderate

My Approach as a Designer (and Platform Matchmaker)

I work with all three platforms because no single tool fits everyone. Some clients need advanced integrations. Others want something clean and easy to manage. My role is to help you choose what fits your business best – and then bring that to life with strategic design.

Design isn’t one-size-fits-all. The same type of business might land on a different platform depending on goals, content, and team bandwidth. Here are a few real-world examples:

Pure Movement (Pilates Studio) on WordPress: Needed MindBody integration + a blog for content strategy

SAMADHI NYC (Somatic Workshops) on Squarespace: Wanted a polished site that their staff could easily update

Spark Studio (Photography Studio) on WordPress: Focused on SEO and custom galleries

Drea Flow (Photography Studio) on Squarespace: Needed a fast, clean portfolio with simple booking tools

If you’re unsure where to start, that’s completely normal. During the planning phase of each project, we look at what matters most to you – and choose the platform that will support you long after launch.

Choose What Aligns, Not What’s Trending

There’s no perfect platform. But there is a platform that will make your business easier to run, your content easier to share, and your vision easier to express.

I’m here to help you find it – and make sure it feels beautiful, functional, and aligned with your next chapter.

Still unsure which platform fits your business? Explore my website design services, and let’s figure it out together.
