Galco's and the "Freedom of Choice"

Where do I begin . . . well, on Thursday Joe and I were supposed to head down to Catalina Island for the day, which I had decided would be my blog for the week. However, things did not roll out according to plan. Our dog, Hoshi, became sick the night before and we had to take him into emergency care. He's ok now but obviously we had to cancel our plans for that next morning and our family was forced to leave without us. We were a little bummed but decided to make the most of it.

For years now, I have been hearing about Galco's soda pop stop but have never taken the time to check it out for myself, which is silly because it's only fifteen minutes away from our house. Now that our day was wide open, I suggested to Joe that we go, make a blog out of it and see what all the hype was about.

Galco's, I've been told, is the true "King of Pop." One critic described it as "a carbonated rain forest. There are many species of soda, beer, and wine, all living together in a delicately balanced ballet," and upon entering Galco's one immediately notices a quote beaming from above, in bold red letters- "The Freedom of Choice." Boy they aren't kidding! This store has more soda then I have ever seen in my life and not just soda but beer and candy as well. I suddenly felt like Julie Andrews in "The Sound of Music," atop of the hills of Switzerland. I felt like a kid again. I was so excited at first, that I forgot to take pictures . . .

and then I remembered . . .

How bout this oldie but goodie? Anyone remember this blast from the past? It's a blast alright, of caffine! What were our parents thinking when they allowed us to drink this stuff. Actually, maybe I'd get more done if I drank it today.

Galco's has every flavor you can think of with a colorful combination of ingredients. Some are chock-full of different dies and artificial flavors, while others are all natural, right down to the sugar cane.

Now toward the end of our shopping adventure, I decided to introduce myself to John, the owner. John showed us around even further and gave us a quick lesson on the store, how he started collecting soda, the history of some of the bottles, and what his favorites store items were. I mean this store is not just a pop stop, it's also a museum and John didn't hesitate for a second in showing us around.

Established in 1857, Galco's was founded on the American dream. It began as a mini mart and today, is known as the largest collection of soda in the Country. John began collecting his sodas when Pepsi-Cola came to him and demanded that he sell their product at a higher rate so that they could then make the percentage that they needed, "why would I sell pepsi for more when my customers can go to the neighboring Ralphs and get it for less," John exclaimed, "and even if I sold it for more I still wouldn't be making enough profit from it." It just wasn't worth it to John but Pepsi knew John would have to concede because the facts are the facts- he was a small mom and pop and needed to have one of the most popular colas present in his shop. Or did he? Long story short, John rebelled and ordered everything but pepsi. To this day, you won't find a single pepsi-cola product in his store and he's made it his goal to help other mom and pops by showcasing their soda within his own mom and pop. I guess that makes Galco's a mom and pop stop as well.

John continued our tour by educating us about the history of bottles. Take these for example-

Did you know that in the late 1800's the U.S. began utilizing a series of bright colbalt blue bottles that also incorporated texture? The bottles contained a series of raised bumps and ridges on the outside of them. The purpose being that should a person mistakenly grab a bottle in the dark, they would know that it was poison, due to the texture on the outside of the of the bottle. This company decided to pay tribute to that bit of history and began designing their soda bottles in the same manner.

Joe and I couldn't get enough. We were throwing one of each into our boxes,
and then we noticed the beer aisle.

So many beers we had never heard of. We didn't know where to begin. So we decided to go for the Costa Rican beer "Imperial," in honor of our upcoming trip.

John also pointed out this colorful number to us, said it was the best Sangria he's ever had.

All in all, we had such a fabulous time picking out beverages and Joe and I are both happy with our final choices. We're still enjoying them. We've had a few people over since we purchased and have found that the sodas and beer make excellent conversation starters. We will definitely return, probably immediately after this stash runs out.

And thank you John for helping to maintain this country's biggest asset- The Freedom of Choice.

The Miles Donahey Duet

I met Becca about a year ago while documenting a wedding in New Orleans. Instantly, we connected. She's vivacious, quirky, fun and adorable. I knew she was a good friend of the bride and I could easily see why. A few months later, I received a phone call from her- she had seen the photography from the New Orleans wedding and wanted to talk about hiring me for her own wedding. She was so excited and forthcoming with the compliments . . . I was honored.
Since then I've now, not only documented her wedding, (which was a blast) but have recently had the opportunity to document her profession as well.

Meet the Miles Donahey Duet.

This Classical, Folk, and Jazz Duo consists of Becca Donahey and Jeff Miles, both of whom have extensive credentials within the field of music. Becca (vocals) has trained with a number of Metropolitan Opera greats throughout her career as well as moved to New Orleans for a few years in order to perform the jazz circuit. While Jeff (guitar,piano) has been playing since the age of ten, performing for over 20 years and currently teaches courses in the Los Feliz area. Jeff and Becca decided to join ranks in 2007 and have been working successfully ever since. They are not only a talented duo but a charismatic one. We had a lot of fun during this shoot.

A Day at Universal Studios

She came, she conquered, she kicked some ass! My baby cousin Robbie, AKA my god child, decided that this trip out, she wanted to go to Universal Studios and this time, she wasn't messing around. She was now tall enough for the big kid rides. I was tall enough as well but someone had to document the adventure right? (my back is still thanking me). So here they are, all the way from Arizona- mi familia.

No more discounted rate equals no more kiddie rides . . . YES!

Between you and me, this was pretty funny to look at zoomed in.

Yes, she's running a little low here on the energy scale so we did what any good parents would do in this situation . . .

We gave her sugar.

And just like that, she was all beter.

And so it ends, Metrolink style- why pay for parking if you don't have to?

Yosemite.

I'll never forget my first impression of Yosemite . . . I was still in High school- ignorant, awkward, rebellious, and had just begun my third semester photography class. Our instructor, Mrs. Phillips, was one of the few teachers I listened to back then, simply because I adored the subject of photography! Makes sense right? Well, I remember walking in one day and watching her as she patiently stood in the back corner of our classroom and studied our reactions to a print that was slowly being passed around the room. “Write down, in a few sentences,” she stated, “your first impression of this piece.” Well, because I felt like this was a waste of our time, taking us away from my favorite part of the class- the dark room, I decided to grab a marker and sloppily write “PRETTY,” in order to quickly complete the assignment. When the print finally came my way I grabbed it, laid it on the table, and inspected the back of it- “Yosemite Valley Clearing Storm, 1942, Ansel Adams.” I then flipped it over, making the conscience decision to take it in for the first time. It was then that I realized that I had so much more to say. "Pretty," just didn't cover it.

That sentiment has never changed. I was awe-struck by that photo then and I'm awe-struck every time I revisit Yosemite, this trip was no exception.

So lets talk about this trip- Joe and I were invited through friends of ours, to come and camp with them on the Wawona side of Yosemite. After we had immediately agreed to go, I realized that this was going to be my third time within the 761,266 acre park and I couldn't wait.

DAY 1- Our Arrival.

This is the first sight one gets to see when coming out of the main tunnel. I often compare the feeling to the first time Dorothy steps out of her house and realizes she's not in Kansas anymore. It's surreal.

Joe and I, taking a moment to reflect. Our tent was just to the right of this photograph. The view was spectacular and there's nothing like the sound of water to lull you to sleep.

Day 2- Beach trip.

What? but Yosemite doesn't have a beach. Oh yes it does. Joe had discovered this sandy paradise on our first day in and we wasted no time getting to know it. Once there, we were surrounded by cliffs, waterfalls, and trees as we laid out in nothing but our bathing suits soaking up the sun's vitamin D, lying upon warm sand and beneath blue skies. Again, surreal.

The only thing missing from this is a Corona!

And when we were't starring at the view, we played Backgammon.

Day 3- The Camp.

There's nothing like a hot political debate between sips of wine in paper cups.

The debate became too heated for Hoshi, he quickly decided to stay out of it.

And I always love a good campfire. Always a great way to end the day . . . that and a bit of silly-time with the Kerosene lamp!

So there it is, in all its glory- "PRETTY." Honestly, I'll never find the perfect words for Yosemite. I'm ok with that. I think it's ok to be speechless at times. For now, my adjectives can be found within my lens.

Baby!

Well here it is- I was going to shoot fireworks for my 4th of July Blog but I was in Santa Monica for the 4th and they decided to cancel them. I was a little bummed. It was the first time I had ever celebrated the 4th minus the fireworks but I quickly recovered. You'll have to too. I have no fireworks for you this monday morning, instead I have baby!

You see, for our daytime 4th activities we all lounged around on the sand, in the sun, and occasionally frolicked in the waves. When I say we, I mean everyone else . . . I obsessed over a baby. My friend recently gave birth to a beautiful baby boy and I could not take my lens off of him- Everyone, meet Aiden.

Better than fireworks right? Happy 4th everybody.

Wedding at Calamigos Ranch.

Recently I shot a wedding with one of my favorite photographers- Erik Hyler of EHGPhoto. I love Eric, love shooting with him. He's extremely talented, we work well together and he's always ready to play. This last wedding was no exception.

Our couple- April and Ken. They're gorgeous, fun, flexible (their dancers), crazy about each other, oh and they're gorgeous. They have dated and danced their way through many years together, as well as many countries. Eric and I adored these two, could have shot them for days and still would have had new ideas. We loved their charm, we loved their care-free spunk, and we loved their spontineity.

April and Ken, here's to many more years together and oh so many countries . . .

Ah gay pride. Twas my first time experiencing it, in all it’s colorful glory. Can you believe that I’ve been an Angeleno since birth and had never experienced the gay pride parade? Sad but true. So my friends and I set out, last Sunday, for this royal west-side adventure, in order to celebrate the rainbow within all of us.

Meet Robin and Activate.

Democratic San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has now jumped into the race for governor, taking the first steps toward succeeding Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2010. The next race for govenor is predicted to be a highly competitive one but as you can see, votes for Newsom will not be a problem within this community- they love him.

So here's a little history- The Los Angeles Gay Pride Parade, founded in 1970, was created in an effort to mark the anniversary of the “Stonewall riots,” a drag-queen led rebellion that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City. Why was there a rebellion? Well, because “American gays and lesbians in the 1950s and 1960s faced a legal system more anti-homosexual than those of some Warsaw Pact countries."-Wikipedia For example: "An adult convicted of the crime of having sex with another consenting adult in the privacy of his or her home could get anywhere from a light fine to five, ten, or twenty years—or even life—in prison. In 1971, twenty states had 'sex psychopath' laws that permitted the detaining of homosexuals for that reason alone. In Pennsylvania and California sex offenders could be locked in a mental institution for life, and in seven states they could be castrated. ”-Wikipedia.

So in 1969, when police decided to raid and interrogate everyone at Stonewall for no good reason other than the fact that its patrons were gay, many from within the gay community had finally found their voice. They stood up proud and decided to fight back. They've been celebrated ever since.

And I was excited to stand up with them; to be part of this history, part of the pride, and part of the fun! And this hood, definitely knows how to throw a good party!

Today I shot production stills for a play called "True West" and realized, I miss this art- the small black box theaters, dusty lights, dated costumes and dramatic plot lines. I miss the imagination that often shuffles across the stage, is signified within a soliloquy or silenced with a gesture. It's been awhile since I've visited the theater and today was the perfect excuse for me to observe and document. I loved every minute of it. "True West" is not only the tale of two brothers but the tale of two Id's, produced by the conflict of biological impulses and social restraints . . .

"I wanted to write a play about double nature, one that wouldn't be symbolic or metaphorical or any of that stuff. I just wanted to give a taste of what it feels like to be two-sided. It's a real thing, double nature. I think we're split in a much more devastating way than psychology can ever reveal. It's not so cute. Not some little thing we can get over. Simply Social- a tribute to Jamie Dordek (@jamield)

What is a social network? Well, Wikipedia defines it as: “an online community of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others.” A good solid concept right? I mean what’s so bad about a community or a group of people coming together due to common interests? Yet anytime I mention social networking to others, I often receive a look of anticipation that alarmingly awaits to see which item I’ll burn first, my bra or the flag. After all, “the frantic global rush to connect everyone to everyone, all the time, is quietly giving rise to a revised version of socialism,” (Kevin Kelly, Wired Magazine) right? Absolutely. However, “We're not talking about your grandfather's socialism. In fact, there is a long list of past movements this new socialism is not. It is not class warfare. It is not anti-American; indeed, digital socialism may be the newest American innovation. While old-school socialism was an arm of the state, digital socialism is socialism without the state. This new brand of socialism currently operates in the realm of culture and economics, rather than government—for now.” (Kevin Kelly, Wired Magazine) Twitter for example, in its own words, is "a free social messaging utility for staying connected in real-time;" A global text-message, if you will, that allows others to follow you and allows all to Cybersocialize Freely. In my opinion, the fact that one can follow another, minute by minute as they sip coffee in Paris, become engaged in Brazil, or run a Marathon in Los Angeles is liberating. The idea that a Photography business in Austria can learn from the tips and secrets shared from another Photography business in New Zealand is stimulating. Up until now, I've always been a little fish in a big pond, today I not only create my own pond but I also decide the size of my fish. It is, to me, the most inspirational source of global networking I have ever seen. And yes . . . it’s socialism.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m new to many of these social networks and in the beginning they did not strike my fancy. At first I found them annoying and ego centric; A popularity contest that was destined to create cyberjunkies out of us all, another obsessive compulsive excuse that reinforced us to never leave the close confines of our own couches, forcing us to become withdrawn, and to "veg" all day. It can be that, indeed . . . It isn’t that for me. Just like anything in this world, you have to find its relevancy for yourself. You can either grow from it, take advantage of it, hide from it or exploit it but the greatest part about “it?” . . . is that the choice is yours.

Take Jamie Dordek (or @Jamield) for example. She was a hard working, Los Angeles, Client Relationship Manager who had placed herself on a wide spectrum of social networks. I happened to find her on Twitter, where her description read, “A glimpse into the travels of a professional girl.” A friend of mine, had turned me on to her posts. I mean with posts like “You're not nearly as cool, special, twee or inspiring as you think you are. Felt good to get that out. Now I'm off to beat some kittens,” to “In Ireland! I fit right in! Everyone is ruddy, round and smiley. I've found my people,” how could you not get hooked. Her personality was charismatic and electric. Her adventures could be as trivial as a brief description of the pair of shoes she was wearing to as weighty as the next destination of her “yellow suitcase.” She was spontaneous and uninhibited. Like a favorite novel that you just can’t put down, we were all intrigued to hear the next witticism, punch-line, phrase word or "video clip" and all of this of coarse led to her blog, ORD to LAX, which I’m sure received many hits, as people grew to know her. It was undeniable, she drew in hundreds. “She embraces joy rather than angst, gratitude rather than envy, hope rather than fear. She is the kind of person I yearn to be.” (Emily, Pleasure Notes)

Well about a week ago I was informed that Jamie had passed away. It seemed a lil surreal, but there it was. Her death had occurred shortly after her tremendous adventure in Ireland. It was reported that she had died from a blood clot that had formed within her body after spraining her ankle from an innocent fall and then flying shortly afterward. Everyone had the same thought- who knew that you could die from a sprained ankle? The online out pour of affection was breathtaking. The sentiment was delivered on nearly every popular social screen. This woman had effected so many and her death had created a common outcry and public display of emotion. She had stopped tweeting, and there were no longer updates on her blog. It was real . . . her adventures had come to a halt and it effected many . . .

"I don’t know where I go from here, but I do know that I want to honor Jamie. I want to be of support to the amazing family and other friends she left behind too soon. I want to walk through the world with passion and self-confidence and tenacity. I owe it to Jamie, now, to do more than yearn for a life fully lived. I owe it to her to live it.” –(Emily, Pleasure Notes)

"Social Networking sites connect us to people. . . They are real, whether you’ve spent time with the person in “real life,” just talked to them over the phone, or just online. All these relationships mean something. That fact is never more pronounced than when someone is suddenly gone." (Jeremy Meyers)

This woman was a stranger to me, and yet she wasn’t. She would never recognize me on the street and yet she shared her life with me and I devoured it, line for line. Socialism? Absolutely. I embrace it. For me, Social networking is like the Kindle of people. I consistently hold hope close to my heart that one day we can all communicate openly and appreciate each individual's journey. I truly hope that it's like Kevin Kelly states, that "Digital socialism may be the newest American innovation." (Kevin Kelly, Wired Magazine) And I hope it's here to stay.

In honor of Jamie, I have reflected on my own life. I will try harder to live it, love it, share it and laugh as much as possible. I am truly grateful for all I have been given, the travels that I have embarked upon and the people I have come to know and love. I am truly blessed and celebrate every day by living each and every moment to its fullest . . .

A Malibu Wedding born under a Midsummer Nights Dream

Becca and Raymond have shared a fairy-tale romance. They met within the theater and were engaged within the theater. Raymond proposed to Becca during their run of "A Midsummer Nights Dream," where they played the parts of the Fairy King and Queen- Oberon and Titania. So it just made sense to have their wedding reflect a similar theme. Their wedding came complete with a lush forest, horses, peasants, fairies and wood nymphs. It was an enchanting day, to say the least, that ended with Becca serenading her new husband to the tune of "Someone to Watch Over Me." Here's a sneak peek . . .

Monday Morning Mommy Blog

I was not able to be with my mother this year for mother's day (sob). She's busy traveling and I've been busy with weddings. She wasn't here to receive my regular hug, highlighted with a specially picked hallmark card. I was forced to think outside the box this time around. I tried calling her but it went to voicemail (sob squared). So because I haven't spoken with her yet and haven't been able to express my warm fuzzies, I decided to dedicate this blog to her.

Engagement Session at Union Station

Today, Zen Todd Photography and I headed to downtown LA for an exciting engagement shoot. Downtown has always been one of my favorite locations to shoot. Its weathered streets and aged architecture always offer a wide variety of colorful backdrops. It always inspires and always looks great on film (or CMOS sensor).

Union Station, one of Downtown's many ancient archetypes, was built in 1939 and is considered to be "The last of America's great rail stations." It's also an excellent location for an engagement shoot, especially if the couple is willing to play and dress the part.

Banana Mojitos

You guys are going to love this one . . .

Whenever Joe and I both have a full day off, we like to take the bikes to Santa Monica and ride down the boardwalk to Venice. Once in Venice, it is tradition for us to park them right in front of Mercedes (a cuban restaurant) find an outdoor table, watch the sunset and sip on the best drink known to man . . . banana mojitos.

This is one of our favorites "day-off" activities and we highly recommend it. If you can't get away to the beach to visit Mercedes, we have experimented and discovered how you can make them right at home AND we're willing to share that recipe with all of you . How much do we rock?! I hope everyone has a fantastic week and if not . . . well, here's to your banana mojito.

Joe and I headed out on Sunday morning to have lunch with the fam. and do a little catching up. I decided to bring the camera along for family portraits but ofcoarse, none of the adults wanted their picture taken. It was me, Joe, a couple of dogs, one cool kid (Paige), and some stuffed animals . . . that's really all one needs for a portrait session right?

What a great sport.

Our Easter ended on a great note. C.C. found a way to say "hey."

Stealth

I am proud to announce that Joe and I participated in a charity fund this weekend, maybe you've heard of it- it's called the "Donate your House to Hollywood Fund!" I think everyone in Los Angeles has come face to face with this charity at one point or another right? Joe's cousin, my very good friend- Jennifer Fontaine, is producing and starring in a new film called "Stealth," a short that explores the life of a transgender and exposes the thin lines that often exist between acceptance and intolerance. I had read the film, loved it, and knew most of the people working on it so when Jen came to Joe and I, in hopes of using our house for the film, it was a no-brainer. And thus, our crazy weekend was born.

Leo Carrillo

This last week, was a rough one for Joe and I. We got through it but it left us a little tired and listless. We needed a break with an injection of fun, stat! So we decided to take a two day camping excursion amongst the beaches of Leo Carrillo. We invited two of our closest companions- Jen & Kerem, packed up the car and that was that.

It was the peace that Joe and I needed and an opportunity to reflect. Which is why, when we first arrived, we walked. We walked alone and then we walked together. We did a lot of walking.

I was amazed. This beach was not new to me. I grew up in this area and spent many summer vacations here but I always find something new. Amongst its rocky shores and shallow pools I always find a new beauty, hidden and waiting to be discovered.

This literally looked like another planet to me and as it turns out . . . it is. This rock is the home to hundreds of barnicles. During low tide they hide within their hard shells in order to protect themselves from birds.

And in the midst of all this beauty . . . my man, (the most beautiful of all :o) As I met up with him, we walked some more. We walked together until the sun went down and then we walked back to our campsite.

And that's where the silly got started, with great friends, a roaring campfire, an amazing assortment of BBQ, humorous stories, and active imaginations- it made for a fantastic evening.

This trip was a two day adventure and only twenty minutes away. It had a tremendous impact. Life is truly what you make of it and Joe and I both came to the conclusion that we must do this more often- get out of the city, reflect, and be silly. This small trip brought us the silver lining that we needed.

A Farewell to C.C.

We still can't believe it . . . we saw her this morning, her happy, crazy, silly self but I'm sorry to say that C.C. is gone. The vet wasn't entirely sure but they think it was due to heart failure. She was very close to us, an immediate part of our family and the most caring and giving soul man could ever hope for in a "best-friend." C.C., wherever you are, we love you. Your joy lives on in our hearts and we will remember you always. She had an amazing seven year journey with all of us, for that we are grateful and as we light our candle for her tonight we will focus on all the love she brought with her and all the love she left.

Baby girl . . . so often we laughed together, it's hard to remember that between the tears.

Engagement Session with Becca & Raymond

For this couple, good things happen in two's. Their love affair began within the dramatic walls of a fabulous little theater known as "The Knightsbridge." Becca saw Raymond in a play there and instantly they became friends. They were friends for two years before they became lovers and they were lovers for two years before he proposed. In August of 2007, they stood side by side, on stage, in a Shakespearean production called "Midsummer Nights Dream." She played Titania to his Oberon and it was during this production, just after curtain call, that Raymond decided to bend on one knee and ask Becca to be his life's companion. They set the date for their wedding . . . you guessed it, two years later.

I had so much fun with this couple. They are, hands down, one of the most vibrant, quirky, and colorful couples I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I don't know who laughed more- them or me! Their place of choice was the Santa Monica Pier. So we headed out just before sunset and played. We played on the sand, we played in the sun, and when our bellies ached from all the laughter, we took it to the arcade. There was never a dull moment.

I look forward to shooting (no pun intended) their wedding this May- bring on the belly ache! . . . because it's like E.E. Cummings once said, "The most wasted of all days is one without laughter."

Istanbul- A Tale Between Two Continents.

Turkey has played so many roles historically and geographically. It has served as a capitol for the Roman Empire, the East Roman Empire, Latin Empire and the Ottoman Empire. In 1923 Mustafa Kemal Atatürk founded the Rupublic of Turkey and the country was then liberated.

Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, the third largest in the world. Located on the Bosphorus Strait, it extends itself across Europe and Asia. It is the only metropolis in the world that is situated between two continents. It has also had a few different names throughout its history- Byzantium, Augusta Antonina, Kostantiniyye, Constantinople (which “They Might be Giants” brought to everyone’s attention in the early 90’s) and its present day name- Istanbul which means, “in the city,” or “downtown.”

My first trip to Istanbul was a ten-day crash course history lesson, hitting all of the mandatory stops along the Mediterranean. It was hard to focus on anything, we were moving so fast. This time I had three glorious weeks to spend in Istanbul. I was able to soak in so much more and became well acquainted with its people, food and customs.

For most of our trip we were located in Moda, a district of Istanbul located on the Asia side, near the Marmora sea. Our days often consisted of walking down to the Kadiköy and catching the ferry there, a twenty minute journey accompanied by many cups of Çay (Turkish tea) and flocks of enthusiastic seagulls, that brought us across the Bosphorus and landed us on the European side of Istanbul.

From there, there was so much to see.

Sophia, originally constructed as a church between A.D. 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian, was later transformed into a mosque and now serves as a museum.

Yerebatan Cistern, a vast underground water storage tank originally built by Constantine the Great. Today it is a huge open space containing 336 columns and about 12 inches of water on the floor. Wooden planks have been laid down so you can walk amongst its columns. The natural acoustics of the room make it ideal for concerts and performances. And yes, we were lucky enough to be able to attend one of these concerts AND it was free. It just doesn’t get better than that. And so we sat, sipping our Çay, and simply listened. It was a great first day.

Topkapi Palace, the first Ottoman palace to be built. It began construction in 1466 and is located on the spot where the foundations of the city were first laid in ancient times. My favorite part of the palace . . . the view. It is one of the most beautiful views of Istanbul, incorporating the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn, the two shores and the sea of Marmara.

Dolmabahçe Palace, built in neo-baroque style between 1843-1856. It consists of 285 rooms, 43 halls, and 6 Turkish baths. My kind of living! This place is decked out, much in the rococo period- crystal chandeliers, decorative tapestries, and lots of gold. Due to all the "bling bling," there is a steady armed watch just outside the palace. Dolmabahçe was built with the intention of replacing the Topkapi Palace which was out fashioned. It housed Sultans and their families before the Republic, and it was then used by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk during his visits to Istanbul.

There's always room for a portrait.

More should be said about Atatürk. Atatürk, which means “father of the turks,” became the first leader of the R.P.P. (Republican Peoples Party) in 1919, the first speaker of the Parliament in April of 1920, the first Prime Minister of Turkey in May of 1920, and its first President from 1923-1938. He liberated Turkey by establishing the Republic of Turkey. He is still greatly adored and respected by his people to this day. He is hung upon every storefront and spoken within every political debate. He passed away within Dolmabahçe’s walls in 1938, due to illness. Out of respect, his rooms are still kept the way he left them.

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, the national mosque of Turkey. The mosque is one of several mosques known as “The Blue Mosque” for the blue tiles adorning the walls of its interior. It was built between 1609 and 1616. I love this mosque. Every time I walk through its walls, I feel at peace. Its history and customs are so thick and thunderous that I can’t help but stare, silently, in awe.

This was our view as we walked out of the "Blue Mosque," everyone crowded around to watch the first big snow of the season. It was breathtaking.

And after a good hour of silence and awe, I like to go shopping.

The Grand Bazaar, constructed between 1455 and 1461, is one of the largest covered markets in the world with more than 58 streets, over 1,200 shops, and has between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily. It is well known for its jewelry, pottery, carpet shops and well, cheesy souvenirs.

Next on the shopping list was The Spice Bazaar, one of the oldest bazaars in the city. It is the second largest covered shopping complex after the Grand Bazaar. The building itself is part of the Yeni Mosque

and, long ago, rents from the shops within were intended to help pay for the upkeep of the mosque. The structure was completed in 1660. The bazaar was, and still is, the center for spice trade in Istanbul. I know this blog is not scratch and sniff so I must say that aside from the amazing colors that filled these halls, the scents were ridiculous. My senses were on overload. Spices for days and their scents were all stunning.

While that completes the Istanbul top ten countdown, there were so many other tunes I’d like to pay tribute to . . .

First of all this trip was birthed through the dreams and conception of the Hanci, Smith, Mills & Castle foundation, it was produced by Susan Smith, and then performed (brilliantly I might add) by a cast of six. We had a blast, not just visiting many of Istanbul’s historic sites but also by tasting their wine and food along the way, laughing amongst their people, and experiencing their traditions and culture. This trip also gave me the chance to get to know my family and friends a bit better. You don’t truly know someone until you’ve traveled with them. I know them each better than I did before- their quirks, idiosyncrasies, insecurities, impulses, and inspiration. I respect them more for it. Because of their openness and willingness to share, I feel a greater love for these people than ever before and am proud to call them family. So, this next segment is in dedication to the Hanci,Smith, Mills, & Castle foundation- I love you all.

We came to Istanbul and Celebrated . . . .

We Celebrated Christmas,

We celebrated a ten year wedding anniversary,

We celebrated the old,

And welcomed in the New Year,

We bonded with their animals,

We bonded with ourselves,

And when we weren't doing all that . . . we played chess.

And One final note: I would like to dedicate this month's blog to a loud mouth little kitty named Jedi Jenjoe Hanci. Jedi- because that's the name he asked for, naturally. Jenjoe- because it was Joe and I who rescued him. And Hanci- because it was Tolga Hanci who couldn't resist this baby kittens charms. So Jedi Jenjoe Hanci, we are all grateful to have you as the newest member of our family. You were a great way to start the New Year. Cheers. şerefe!

Bits of New Orleans and Hawaii

So it’s been awhile since returning to the land of blogging and for good reason of course- I’ve been busy! However as this year comes to a close and I begin to set forth new goals for the upcoming year, I can’t help but reminisce over all of the gems that I have visited from this past year- Santa Ynez, Colorado, Mexico, New Orleans, Hawaii, and my final excursion- Turkey. Actually as I write this blog I am currently enjoying my first morning alone, listening to the rain within the walls of a charming European style apartment that overlooks the streets of Moda. This will be my home for the next three weeks, where I will also greet and welcome in my new year-“hosgeldin, hosgeldin!” So before I move into this next blog, I simply wanted to take a moment for thanks. 2008 has been so rewarding that I can hardly wait to see what 09 has in store.

Now, back to work. As I mentioned earlier, I’m a little behind. In October I had two destinations, New Orleans for a wedding and then Hawaii for some much needed rest and relaxation. So this next blog is a bit of a catch-up collage, if you will, starting with a few from “The Big Easy,” and ending with the tropical splendor that is Hawaii.

New Orleans. This city has been through so much, especially since Katrina ripped through it in 2005. However, its spirit has never been stronger. New Orleans’ passion and dedication runs rampant through every vein of its city- its people, traditions, food, architecture, and music. Here are just a few sips from my cup of New Orleans.

* Preservation Hall- a must as a first-time visitor. Some of its greatest jazz musicians have had their start here.

*Bourbon Street- Where one can grab a colossal size, kick your butt in one sip, daiquiri and lose their inhibitions to the sound of sweet jazz.

So about a week after shooting my New Orleans wedding I set forth for a truly lackadaisical experience- Hawaii. What can I say. I’ve been going to Hawaii for many years now and I never get tired of it. My favorite island has always been Maui, which is still lush with the old Hawaiian vegetation but with a little night life thrown in as well. This year we were on the island for Halloween which is actually, funny enough, similar to Mardi Gras. Everyone goes crazy- paraded costumes, crowded streets, and later in the evening- lots of drinking. The first parade, which kicks off the festivities. is the Keiki Parade. Keiki means baby or child in Hawaiian. Well, one of my favorite canvases is kids so I wasted no time in attending this one. With camera in hand, I squeezed my way in and out of the crowd, capturing any little tike I could get my lenses on.

As I weaved in and out of the colorfully costumed keikis, I noticed a young lad, off to my right in a patch of grass. He was trying to stand for the first time while his parents excitedly cheered him on. I found it ironic that he was wearing a spider costume- every time he tried to get up, all eight legs dangled loosely around his belly. This kid was ridiculous. So cute and so determined, I just couldn’t take my eyes off him until I witnessed his success.

And here was the pay off.

He was so excited. I screamed “good job buddy!” And gave him a high 40 . . . .
ok bad joke.

Aside from Halloween, our trip was filled with plenty of beach activities,

as well as family. That’s right this trip was also a family affair, quality time for Joe and I to bond with ma and grams.

She’s adorable isn’t she. You would never guess her age. I love my grams.

And toward the end of the trip, Joe and I set off for the jungle. The common view of Hawaii is that of its beaches but there is a whole other world deep within its rainforests. It’s just another, greener, shade of Hawaii’s tropical beauty.

And once again another journey comes to an end, it’s always hard for me to reach but deep down I know where one journey ends, another begins.

New Orleans Wedding

Wendy and Andre met in college, have been friends for thirteen years, dated for seven and have loved over lifetimes. They are that special "one in a million" couple that you can't help but watch across an empty park, or hear whispering from a distant window, see silhouetted against a setting sun, or hear sobbing their goodbyes from within a local airport. Their love is so rich, so deep and I have always looked up to them within my own relationships. So when they asked me to to help capture their wedding day, I didn't hesitate. I couldn't wait to get started.

The backdrop to their fairy-tale wedding, takes place in New Orleans. I had never been and couldn't wait to sink my trigger finger into it's lush lifestyle. First of all, jazz everywhere. Second of all- booze. Need I say more? It was a good time. This wedding was completely unique, from it's vibrant colors, relaxed nature, and celebratory street jazz procession. There was never a dull moment.

Wendy and Dre . . . I love you both, you always inspire. I feel proud to have documented this day for you and can't wait for future projects. I wish you all of my love and friendship as you grow very old together.

My Girls- Fun with Portraits

I love these girls. They are extremely gifted photographers and a lot of fun. Two weeks ago we set out on an adventure, to shoot each other . . . shooting. We all needed professional portraits, us in action and so we decided to make it a group effort. Not only was I excited to have portraits of myself but I was also eager to embrace our destination of choice- downtown L.A. I had visited multiple times but had never shot there. I was eager to explore it's colors, backdrops, alley-ways, and hidden light. Anyway, I hope you enjoy. Without further ado, let me now introduce Courtney Taylor and Robin Mano.
