- Perform an advanced JAC Plus search, limiting to audio titles as described above
- Click on the “Save as My Preferred Searches” button
- Click on the “My Info” button
- Then click on the “Preferred Searches” button

Are your usual accessories these days a flash drive, laptop, BlackBerry, etc.? Do these devices have your personal information on them i.e. social security number, financial data, etc? Most importantly, do you carry around your clients’ information on them? Then you need to read Dan Giancaterino’s article published in The Legal Intelligencer on Wednesday, May 7, 2008, entitled Decrypting Ways to Encrypt Sensitive Information. Dan talks about the encryption process and then reviews a couple of easy to use, free encryption programs. As Dan states in the article …

“Lose a laptop and you’re out $500 to $600. Lose your client’s sensitive information — well, that’s a different story.”

Jenkins Internet Librarian Quoted

Dan Giancaterino’s Internet expertise has once again been called upon by Michael Smerconish. Usually Dan is a call-in guest to his talk show, but this time Michael wanted a response to the Inquirer Currents column he was writing comparing two very different (and popular) YouTube videos: the farewell lecture by a college professor who’s dying of cancer, and an online rant by a woman about her ex. The article appeared in this past Sunday’s Inquirer, Head Strong: Two very different sides of the Internet. Here’s what Dan had to say …

“Five years ago, I wouldn’t have known about Randy Pausch, let alone seen his last lecture. I’ve watched the complete 76-minute lecture three times now. YouTube has made it is so easy for me to do this. . . . But for every Randy Pausch, there’s a hundred Tricia Walsh-Smiths,” said Jenkins Law Internet Librarian Dan Giancaterino.

The Jenkins website has been growing and evolving since 1996. Our newest change is the addition of the Jenkins Blog. Using Web 2.0 technology is an easy way for us to keep you updated on our services, research databases, court rule changes, library news, staff activities, search engine tips, and lots of other information to help you get the most out of your membership. Over the next couple of months, we will be incorporating our Research Tips and New and Noteworthy book selections into this Blog. We have also added a link at the end of each blog for you to send us your comments or read comments from others. We hope you will start commenting and let us know what you think. So, take advantage of this great technology to keep up with what is happening at the law library and add the Jenkins Blog RSS feed to your Blog reader today.

Dan Giancaterino Acknowledged in New Book

Dan and Michael Smerconish met at one of Jenkins‘ hands-on CLE Internet courses back in 2005. Dan was the instructor, and Michael was so intrigued by his Internet knowledge that he invited Dan to be a guest on his talk show. Since then, Dan has been Michael’s insight into all that’s facsinating on the Internet and he has made many guest appearances on Michael’s show. Although Michael has always acknowledged Dan’s expertise, the most fitting was written in the book Michael coauthored with Maureen Faulkner, Murdered by Mumia: A Life Sentence of Loss, Pain and Injustice:

Dan Giancaterino is an Internet librarian who hangs his hat at the Jenkins Law Library in Philadelphia. He’s a master at finding any and everything that exists in cyberspace. His skills were reserved for the truly troublesome search issues, and when called upon, he never disappointed, for which I am grateful.

In researching the book they could not remember the date Maureen Faulkner was interviewed by Tom Snyder. Dan’s searching skills were called upon and he located a Philadelphia Inquirer article that mentioned the interview and also had an insightful quote by Maureen that changed the way Michael wrote the Tom Snyder chapter of the book.

[update] At the book signing held at the Union this past Monday Michael mentioned about 20 people who were instrumental in getting the book done. Dan was one of them and Michael also made sure to say that Dan works at Jenkins Law Library. [/update]

Internet Librarian Again Visits Smerconish Radio Show

Dan Giancaterino, Jenkins' Internet Librarian, was a guest on the Michael Smerconish radio show on Tuesday, August 14.

During a 15 minute call-in segment, Dan discussed the cached copy available on search results pages, the Internet Archive, storing bookmarks online using Furl and del.icio.us, and storing documents online using Box.net and Omnidrive.

Today's show marked the tenth time Dan has been on the radio in the past 2 years.

2006 Fundraising Campaign Reception

Jenkins hosted a reception on June 25, 2007 for contributors to the law library’s First Annual Fund Raising Campaign. Abraham C. Reich, President of the Board, addressed the attendees and thanked them for their donations. Special recognition was given for the generous donations from the law firm Pepper Hamilton LLP, $5,000 and to Stockton Bates LLP and Geraldine and Harold Cramer for $1,000 donations. A commemorative plaque listing these donors is displayed in the library’s entrance lobby.

There are a number of ways to locate the form you need - search by category or keyword in the search box; use the A to Z list and browse by category; or select a form from the Browse by Sample Search list. Once you locate your form, a number of downloadable formats may be available - Word, WordPerfect, Rich Text or Acrobat. Some forms even have completed samples.

While you're on the Member Online Services page, take a few moments to peruse the other remote databases available to you. Most likely you'll find some of these resources also helpful.

Internet Librarian on the Radio Twice in Same Day

Dan Giancaterino, Jenkins' Internet Librarian, was a guest on the Michael Smerconish radio show on WPHT 1210 AM at 7:00 am on Tuesday, June 5. Three and a half hours later he “appeared” on the Glenn Beck talk show on WPHT as well.

On both shows Dan discussed the security and privacy issues related to the new Street View feature available in Google Maps. Currently, Street View images are available for 5 U.S. metro areas: Denver, Las Vegas, Miami, New York City, and San Francisco.
