IBM Smart Market

IBM Smart Market has a little of everything; a customer site to buy products, a business site to sell products, and an admin site to manage one's purchases - all localized for each country that SmartMarket is offered in.

My previous programming experience was crucial here, as changing any one thing could affect thousands of pages. I made recommendations that would play nice with the existing data and technology, which saved our team from having to hire a developer for consulting purposes. I also freed up some time for management to handle other tasks, since I was able to take all the calls to the third-party development team hired to build our recommendations.

My duties on this project were many, and they included creating various UX deliverables such as wireframes and specifications; providing art direction and creating comps; consulting on SEO, front-end and back-end web development; and defending our rationale against evil clients and third-party tech teams.

COPD Guide

Served as UX consultant for COPD Guide, as the creative team building the site was not familiar with interactive best practices.

Made recommendations on topics such as building a non-Flash version for users without Flash; optimizing and slicing graphics for the web; and writing clean, hack-free CSS.

TickerHound Edit Profile

The main issue with the Edit Profile process was that it was not clear to the user whether they had chosen a TickerHound Avatar or their own uploaded image for their profile picture. Secondary issues included form elements out of visual alignment and the need to add a fourth tab for users to set their newsletter and alert preferences (this is pending release).

I separated the profile picture into 2 tabs - one for TickerHound Avatar and one for uploading a custom image - and introduced a toggle to make it clear to the user which of these images they were currently using for their profile.

Visual design changes included adjusting alignment and spacing of all form elements to line them up consistently throughout all the tabs.

Changes were built with XHTML, CSS, and JavaScript; I worked closely with the CTO to ensure that these changes worked across all browsers and fit in nicely with existing code.

In addition, I suggested content strategy in regards to strengthening the meaning of the TickerHound Avatar - such as Avatar-specific forums and newsletters, and content/advertising targeted to each Avatar.

TickerHound Profile

The TickerHound Profile page needed to be redesigned to allow a second column for targeted site content and advertising

I moved identifying information, such as Name, Location, and Paw Points to the right of the profile picture for increased legibility. I also wrapped tabbed content, such as Favorites and Comments, to a new row so that this content had as much room to breathe as possible. The result was a highly scannable, legible, and typographically correct Profile page.

The Human Race 10K

Complete design for the Charities section of The Human Race 10K website. Allowed for users with or without Nike+ to donate their money or miles trained to one of 3 charities, and to seek donations from their peers via email or social networking sites.

Nike Plus

Simplified tasks on Nike Plus including creation of Goals, Resolutions, and Nike Plus avatar; searching for and navigating through product manuals, downloads and FAQ; and adding notes and other metadata to training sessions.

I grew up with the Internet, and have spent a lifetime observing how others use it and think of it. I've been working in the interactive field for 6 years - first as a web designer and developer, now as a UX designer - and have a complete understanding of how all the different design disciplines work together on a project.

My ability to speak everyone else's language has made me a valuable team member everywhere I've worked because I've been able to effectively marry deliverables together into a coherent, useful, and beautiful interactive work.

When I'm not kicking ass at my job, I'm working the heavy bag or cooking (nothing special - I'm usually just trying not to burn things to the pots and pans).
