We recently (OK, June) ordered some custom bookshelves for the living room from Buck’s. They were expensive, but they’re oak, good quality, and were made exactly the right size (30″ tall to go with the couch, 24″ wide also to go with the couch, and 12″ deep to fill out the available wall space – that makes more sense in a picture). They did take the full 8 weeks that they thought would be an over-estimate, but it was worth the wait.

Of course, when you get real wood furniture, you can’t paint it. So, I decided it was time to learn how to stain things (because there was no way I wanted to pay someone else to do that, especially when I know so many people who could give advice on this). I have used clear poly a few times and find that quite easy. Conveniently, had just found and purchased the trim for his office, which also needed to be stained. So, that kind of became our experiment (of course, we made samples first, because the trim was real oak and we weren’t about to mess that up either) with staining. We used General Finishes, which is very, very different from Minwax. Seriously. But, it’s the only brand you can find at some wood working stores, and the one they sell at Buck’s too. It’s very thick, almost disturbingly so (apparently lots of people call the store or return the cans because it’s not what they expected), and you don’t have to play the waiting game to get the right level of darkness/saturation – you just wipe the excess off right away. And really? This is a much better idea than the timed variety, especially when thinking about all the sides and parts of the bookshelves, which would be difficult to time equally.

Love it! Such a great product! Matched the cupboard in ‘s office perfectly. There was only one tiny problem.

At the same time we’d bought the Shaker Maple for ‘s office, we bought Walnut to try to match up to the piano. Well, the Walnut stain wouldn’t take. It was terrible. We finally decided it was a bad batch, and we’d take it back to the store for a refund (and to buy more stain for the next part of ‘s office). Once at the store (holding the bum stain and multiple pieces of wood samples), we suddenly realized that the mistake had been ours (mine, probably). We bought Early American, not Walnut. Huh. Those colors are very different.

So take two on that.

The sales guy was very helpful in our quest to find the right color for the work surface in ‘s office. He taught us about the difference between stains and dyes, the difference between mixing and layering, and was just generally very helpful. Could not be happier about that customer service experience.

[Editor’s note: This post has been in the works since August 2010. Please excuse any disjointedness or awkward flow. I’ve done the best I can.]

Especially for a lawn. However, the effort required to make that happen is less than enjoyable (or so I’ve heard – gets credit for all the sprinkler action at our house). Gardens, too, require water to be successful. Funny how that is. Our first year in this house, we set up sprinkler hoses that worked, keeping the veggies growing and the hydrangea from wilting in the heat. They were not flaw-proof, as one broke and needed to be replaced part-way through the summer. The next year, we pulled them out and 2 of the 3 hoses didn’t work.

It was time for a new solution.

was working on a project for work that involved creating a timer program of some sort, so he worked on writing up a program for us as part of the learning process. He also thought that the idea of an in-ground irrigation system was good, and that we could do it ourselves. I would have never thought of that. We received some good advice from one of the Home Depot experts (who said that it would cost 5x more to have professionals do it – great selling point – and that it was really quite easy), and set to work planning it out.

So, let me walk you through the process…. (Warning, lots of pictures!)

First, call up your city and find out what permits you might need. They thought it was strange that we called, so they must not get that much. It's a good idea to do it, though. We needed one for the backflow preventer that we may or may not have known we needed. You'll need to dismantle part of your deck for the next part (this picture was actually taken after the next step, but you get the idea).

Then, call up a plumber, and pay him a lot of money to install a backflow preventer (so that outside water doesn't get inside and foul up your drinking water). I suspect most of the bill was for the dozen or so feet of copper pipe he had to install - that stuff is expensive!

Now, have your father-in-law come over and let the men dismantle a good portion of the deck (only the planks that are in the way of the trench that needs to be dug). Make sure you stack said boards in a logical order that you remember for when you re-assemble.

Very important: Call 811 before you dig! Seriously. It's so easy (you don't even need to call - they have a website, and a mobile version for your phone), and it's the law. The instructions told us to use white spray paint to circle the area(s) where we were digging. Instead, I drew a line where we were going to put the pipe (yes, the line is not straight - you try drawing a straight line in grass with an upside-down can of spray paint while walking backwards!).

Draw out the whole thing. The nice people from your local service companies will come out and mark any areas that you can't dig (or need to be careful around). Our only problem area was right at the front curb, and we easily modified our plan.

Now you get to dig! This is part of the first day's work - Prince Charming dug this hole for the manifold (and manifold cover - that green Rubbermaid-like box next to the deck).

This was my first day's effort. This further reinforced my hatred for the rocks and black plastic that hopefully end at the grass line (please, pretty pretty please, let that be the case).

Create and install the part of the pipe that won't be buried out of copper. Shell out many pennies for it. There was soldering for this part, and we came up with a plan for when the blow-torch had to be used right next to the house (this involved plywood wrapped with tin foil, oven mitts, and a fire extinguisher nearby).

The underground pipe can be PVC. It's really, really cheap. And easy (for the most part).

Did I mention the digging? There will be a lot of it. You have to get the pipe 12" under the surface. Thankfully, the soil under the deck was quite sandy and easy to dig up.

This is part of phase 2, which is installing sprinklers in the other 2/3rds of the lawn. We're not doing that just yet, so that piece going off to the left is capped off.

…And that’s basically as far as we got before it got so cold that the project had to be abandoned, and then there were several feet of the snow on the ground for many, many months. I promise we reassembled the deck long before that happened.
