I'm sure that jlinfan#1 will post here with some thoughts of his own following our trip to Orlando. Right now, we're sitting in the airport killing 4 hours before our flight back to the Bay Area.

Here are my thoughts/reactions to the game:

1. JLin's style of play is not suited for the all-star type game. He is a traditional point guard whose strengths, in part, lie in executing a system. In the all-star games, there is no system. Hence the 25 minute "practice" in the morning. Is doesn't mean that JLin is a bad player. But, for example, this is the type of format that Rubio excels in. Rubio can use his creativity to do some really fun stuff.

2. In my pre-game notes, I commented on the fact that Steve Kerr, who was one of the Team Shaq coaches, had specifically called out that this would be JLin's 3rd game in 3 nights (of course it was Landry's also). We were wondering therefore how much time JLin would get. It's a balancing act, recognizing that the game itself doesn't mean much but that there are fans who want to see certain of their favorite players play. Personally, I would have liked to have seen JLin play more. But he didn't play that well (see comment #1 above) so perhaps that was also a reason for the reduced minutes.

3. The funniest moment of the night was the Kiss Cam. If you watched the game, you know what I'm talking about (unless they didn't show it on TV).

4. I'm really impressed with both Rubio and Irving. Looking forward to some good matchups between JLin and them in the years to come. Should be fun.

5. The media's focus on JLin is unfathomable. Even David Stern commented today (or was it yesterday) that the attention on JLin has exceeded what Jordan faced. Nthere were so many members of the media wanting access to Jeremy, it was crazy. Seeing it in person blew me away. It is a much bigger phenomenon than I had understood.

6. Keep in mind that JLin is essentially a rookie with 11 games started under his belt. He will improve as he has done at each level of his career. I fully expect some ups and downs but I think he will grow from them and will end up having a very successful NBA career barring unforeseen injury).

Rising Stars Game Thread
First, here are the rosters for both teams, along with their NBA team, position, height, weight, college team (or country), years of experience (Rookie or Sophomore), and draft position information. All information - including the listing of JLin as a "rookie" -- was taken from the NBA's website:

A few things jump off the page. First, only two players were not drafted in the first round (Fields and Lin). And, of course, only JLin was undrafted. It's not clear to us how many undrafted players have ever played in the Rising Stars (a/k/a "the rookie-sophomore") game. But that's something that we'll look into. Finally, of the 20 players selected for the Rising Stars game, 13 of them were taken at the overall #10 spot or higher.

Now, lets look at the same players' PER stats.

Team Chuck
Player 2011-12 PER (thru 2/23)
MarShon Brooks 16.32
DeMarcus Cousins 20.83
Paul George 15.18
Gordon Hayward 13.77
Kyrie Irving 20.74
Kawhi Leonard 15.12
Tiago Splitter 18.99
Evan Turner 13.17
John Wall 17.96
Derrick Williams 13.93

Team Shaq
Player 2011-12 PER (thru 2/23)
Norris Cole 11.21
Landry Fields 13.32
Blake Griffin 23.41
Brandon Knight 11.91
Jeremy Lin 22.33
Greg Monroe 23.46
Markieff Morris 13.74
Ricky Rubio 15.74
Tristan Thompson 13.49
Kemba Walker 15.55

Now, we fully realize that stats are NOT everything. But we find these PER results interesting. First of all, only 5 players had a PER of 20 or higher. They were Blake Griffen (#1 overall pick), Kyrie Irving (#1 overall pick), DeMarcus Cousins (#5 overall pick), Greg Monroe (#7 overall pick), and JLin (undrafted).

Keep in mind that JLin's PER numbers include last night's game against the Heat. Notwithstanding, JLin was still the #18 player in the league regardless of position for PER. Prior to last night's game, JLin was #8, behind only Lebron, DWade, Kevin Durant, CP3, Kevin Love, DRose, and Dwight Howard (and one position ahead of Kobe).

That's pretty astounding no matter which way you cut it.

More From Orlando
Steve Kerr said that he wouldn't "give away any secrets" to Team Shaq's "strategy" although he joked that they were going to "slow it down."

Right.

Kerr did mention that the Knicks had played the last two nights and so they were going to be conscious of that fact.
Gotta think JLin gets some decent time, though, given the fan interest.

Practice

I only got to watch the first half of this one (flying to Orlando) and boy was it ugly. No A game tonight, more like a D. You can make lots of excuses about the back to back, the compressed schedule, his bruised sternum from the Hawks game, this and that, but Jeremy just had a horrible game. From the outset he had a little "deer in the headlights" look. The good thing is this was just like a quiz with the final coming in a few months during the playoffs. He has a lot of studying, learning, and hard work ahead. Where to start? First, valuing every possession, as those rips should never happen. He cannot have mental lapses bringing the ball up on small and quick defenders. Also, if teams are gonna pressure like that, Tyson needs to set the backcourt screen and take the guys head off. You have to make them pay.

Do not panic folks, Jeremy will be just fine. He was able to see up close the best defense in the NBA and two of the leagues best players. I am confident he will bounce back strong after the A-S break and use this as a great learning experience and continue to improve his game.

As for the Knicks as a team, they showed flashes of what they will be come playoff time. Jorts coming back is a great addition as he helps spread the floor even more. No one is going to want to play this team come playoff time. They will be dangerous.

Game Time! Kobe and JLin, are you freaking kidding me? This vid is just flat out sic. Should be another one in the making with LeBron, DWade, and JLin Thursday night in South Beach!

ESPN Insider Tom Haberstroh's Tweets:

LeBron James on tomorrow: "I know I'm going to end up guarding Lin at some point".

Someone paid about $10,000 for a ticket to Knicks vs. Heat tomorrow night.

LeBron on Thursday vs. Knicks: "It's gonna be electrifying"

NY Post's Marc Berman on Sulia writes:

Jeremy Lin on facing LeBron James, who claimed he may defend him some. "In terms of matchups, LeBron is a great player and great defender," Lin said. "We just have to be aggressive and not change anything on my end. This is a good opportunity to build momentum into the All-Star Break. It's a big game."

Another great article on Jeremy and his faith:

http://www.newjerseynewsroom.com/professional/qlinsanityq-finds-inspiration-in-broncos-tim-tebow-and-bible-verses

Oh yeah, the Knicks beat the Hawks 99 to 82. JLin with 17 pts and 9 dimes:

http://www.nba.com/video/games/knicks/2012/02/22/0021100492_atl_nyk_recap.nba

JeremyLin.net will be out in Orlando for the Rising Stars Game on Friday! So right after the Heat game, stay tuned for exclusive JLin news and interviews.

Lin-Sanity Seven @ 7

We have some really deep and insightful videos and articles today:

1. This ESPN interview with Rachel Nichols actually brought tears to my eyes:

2. Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless takes on:

Jeremy Lin Ethnic Sensitivity - YouTube

3. More on race and ethnicity:

Knicks' Jeremy Lin holds mirror up to America - latimes.com

4. Jeremy and Religion:

Jeremy Lin emerges as emblem of burgeoning Asian-American Christianity – CNN Belief Blog - CNN.com Blogs

5. Jeremy On Back To Back SI Covers:

http://yfrog.com/nee9y7j

6. Jeremy is back in the top ten of John Hollinger's Player Efficiency Rating (PER), which is one of the most thorough NBA statistical ratings systems currently in use. I believe JLin will slowly climb into the top 5 of the rankings as the season moves along. Note that the only PG's ahead of Lin are Derrick Rose and Chris Paul:

Hollinger's NBA Player Stats - ESPN Insider - National Basketball Association - ESPN

7. The Knicks play back to back starting tonight against the Hawks. Thursday nights game at Miami will likely be the most watched regular season game of all time. I'm confident that we will see Jeremy playing at an MVP level as they take on LeBron, DWade, and the red hot Heat! I can't wait!

in our Post-Game Thoughts following last night's Nets Game, everyone's going to give their best effort against JLin.

Wojnarowski agrees with us.

A few thoughts:

1. JLin himself never said that he "destroyed" Deron Williams. Deron is referring to reporters and others who made that claim. Further, Deron had 21/11 with 3 steals in that first game so it's not like he had a bad game. Obviously Deron wasn't reading our site. And he should! All we said is that JLin had a "breakout" game; not that he destroyed this player or that.

2. Interesting that even with JLin's breakout game against the Nets, it wasn't until his performance against Utah that the Knicks themselves became believers. Wojnarowski notes:

The Feb. 7 deadline for guaranteeing contracts for the season was 72 hours away, and outplaying Williams still hadn’t sold Knicks executives. After that Saturday night game, league sources said a Knicks official was still making calls about whether the Detroit Pistons planned to keep NBA Developmental League call-up Walker Russell for the season. The Knicks would’ve signed Russell over Lin, sources said. The Pistons had no idea this was happening, but the Knicks were still rooting for Walker to become available. Until Lin had 28 points against the Utah Jazz on Feb. 6, and, well, it was over.
JLin was tearing it up in practice, from what we heard. So the Knicks' skepticism is puzzling.

3. We're also curious about the continued skepticism expressed by Jason Terry and others. While it's true that certain systems will fit certain players and bring out their best, it's not like Mike Bibby was tearing it up this year before JLin starting getting minutes. Why is it so difficult to believe that Lin is simply a decent player?

Knicks vs Nets Post Game

Jeremy is gonna get everyones best shot, every night. Deron looked like he was playing game 7 of the NBA finals and went off tonight. Even though Jeremy had a very good stat line (21 pts, 9 assists, 7 reb, 4 stls, 3 TOs), the team was out of sync with Melo back and no Shumpert. No worries here though, as it'll take some time to work out the kinks.

If you don't have the NBA League Pass, you gotta get it. These Knicks games are so intense as everyone is trying to stop the Lin-Sanity. Too bad we had to hear the Nets announcers and their constant whining of "Jeremy can't go left". It had to be repeated at least 25-30 times. I'm also getting sick of the "its the system" excuse as to why Jeremy is setting all these statistical records. Another common excuse is "this is the first time we saw him play, now we have the scouting report on him". This may be true but how about these reasons that Jeremy could use but won't:

1. It's the first time he's ever played in the game with Melo and most of these players together at the same time. He didn't practice once with Tyson before playing in a game with him. Same with Stat.

2. The amount of minutes he's played in his career, it's like he's a rookie in his 20th game.

3. He is seeing all of these defenses for the first time and they are putting their best defender on him and game planning to stop him like he is Lebron.

4. Deron Williams is a career .35 % 3 point shooter, he was 8-14 tonight. He got hot and there was no hedging from the Knicks bigs off of the screen to help. Makes no sense from a coaching standpoint.

5. He had a knee operation this past summer so is probably only about 85-90% full strength.

6. The Knicks are just a horrendous team without him. Once he is off the floor, it's just one on one. They need him to be on the floor 40+ minutes.

7. He's not getting any DWade type calls yet.

Some Pre-Game Thoughts - At A Glance

On February 4th, JLin came off the bench against the Nets to have a breakout game with 25 points and 7 assists in 36 minutes in his first extended action of the season.

Sixteen days later you know the rest.

Now it's rematch time against All-Star Deron Williams and his crew. This will be the first "rematch" game for JLin against any of the teams the Knicks have faced since February 4th so it will be interesting to see if the Nets try to defend JLin differently than they did two weeks ago. Gotta think they will try some of the same traps and double teams that others have been trying.

Also of note, tonight's game should mark Melo's return from a seven game absence. Melo's last full game was against the Nets.

The Nets will have Brook Lopez In the lineup for the second time this season but will be without Jordan Farmar who had 19 points against the Knicks on February 4th.

ESPN has an interesting analysis of JLin's impact on the Knicks.

Tim Tebow On Jeremy Lin

1. How ironic is it that the Warriors drafted 2006 New York City Player of the Year (Student-Athletes) Charles Jenkins to take the place of the Bay Area's 2006 California DII POY, Jeremy Lin, now in NYC? I think before they did, they should have checked out the list of top point guards who've come out of Cali: Gary Payton, Jason Kidd, Baron Davis, and Russell Westbrook just to name a few off the top of my head. We know how to grow point guards here on the West Coast.

2. I'm going on record to say that the waiving of Jeremy Lin will go down as one of the worst moves in NBA history. It'll be right up there with Portland taking Sam Bowie instead of Michael Jordan.

3. Jeremy Lin an NBA MVP candidate? or should I say LinVP? Sound crazy? Well, not in Vegas. They have him at #10. Also, JLin ranks #11 in PER at 23.49. Steve Nash won his 2005-2006 MVP at PER rank of #14 at 23.29 and in 2004-2005 with a PER rank of #18 at 22.04. If the Knicks keep winning, JLin will be in the MVP conversation with LeBron and Durant.

4. What we are seeing now with the racial junk from the media is nothing compared to what Jeremy has had to deal with for years. He not only had to deal with "I got this guy" from all the opposing players wanting to guard him because he didn't look like a baller, to "you got the wrong day, tomorrow is open gym for volleyball" or "are you the trainer?", not to mention ever single asian racial slur in the book, straight to his face from players and fans alike. However, all of these obstacles have made him who he is today, a mentally tough minded player who plays like an assassin. He has also modeled the way to deal with this. He never brings it up to condemn or to us as an excuse, but doesn't hide it either. His play as well as the way he gets along with all of his teammates, opposing players, and coaches will do tons of good for race relations in regards to the way Asians are viewed and treated.

5. Jeremy's mom is an Engineer but she spent most of her time while the boys were growing up, driving them from practice to practice to practice.

6. Check out the highlights against the Hornets below. The stroke starting to look sweet.

7. The Mavs are playing well in their last few, especially Dirk. He will be a tough matchup for the Knicks. Also, can't wait to see the match up of the old guard and the new guard. JKidd vs JLin.

He actually played very well in the 2nd half including just 1 TO. Obviously, he needs to cut down on his turnovers as he talks about in this post game interview. He is at a little over 5 per 36 minutes. He needs to get it down to at least 4-4.5 per 36 minutes. I think this loss will be good in the long run. It cools down a bit on the Lin-sanity. Get some sleep Jeremy and lets get ready for the defending champs on Sunday.

Also, here are some other high TO stats:

Russell Westbrook is currently at 4.5 p36 this season, Isiah Thomas was at 4.4 p36 his rookie year, Magic at 3.9 p36 his rookie year.

1. Jeremy makes the cover of Time magazine. What's next?

2. Jeremy played AAU ball like all of the top ballers. Who was the toughest guy he faced? Kevin Durant, who is actually a month younger than Jeremy.

3. JLin worked very hard this summer with Doc Shepler (coached JLin's coach, Peter Diepenbrock at Burlingame HS) on his shooting. Doc said Jeremy shot consistently over 70% on all his three point shooting drills. "He's the best shooter I've ever trained" said Doc who has worked with High School and College players for over 30 years. I believe when Melo gets back, Jeremy will go off with his 3 point shooting.

4. Coach Pete is headed to New York and I hear he's gonna be sitting next to Spike Lee on Sunday. Check out this great interview with him at the bottom.

5. I'm very happy for Roger Montgomery, Jeremy's agent. Great guy. He must be very, very, very busy lately.

6. The depleted New Orleans Hornets are up next. Backup PG Greivis Vasquez will likely start is playing well. However, look for Jeremy to have a little extra motivation. Vasquez and JLin both worked out for Memphis in 2010 and the Grizzlies picked Vasquez with the 28th pick in the 1st round. He was later traded to the Hornets.

7. Didn't look like Jeremy had any problem with Isiah Thomas and the Kings this time. Jeremy definitely had his swag on early in this one. Check out the highlights below.
