I am having so much fun with the new Ipad app by John Bonadies LetterMpress, this is the first time I have interacted with a ipad app that really took the actions from real life and succeeded at recreating the sounds and feel. I found this project originally in Kickstarter and heard about it around the letterpress community, They started with scanning actual typefaces, and then loading a large library of type, and woodcut images into the library. This app is well worth the $5.99 and will keep you interested for hours.

Mashable posted a good article titled “HOW TO: Get the Most Out of Subcontracting With Freelancers” by Shane Pearlma. I enjoyed the section about how to manage the relationship and and the technology these virtual agency like to use. On the invoicing side of things I have been using Harvest app for a year now, they come out with new features like base-camp integration and desktop widgets for time tracking but I ran across a British time tracking and client management site called SOLO, I see they have some new features coming soon but they do offer a 14 day free trial. Check it out and let me know if you could see a use for it.

Read this great article from HunchBlog about how your web address for your business describes your professionalism. I have this issue also with which email address do you use when you sign up for services, which do you use for friends and family. I use mobile me for my personal life to sync everything together and the mobile to desktop transition is very easy. Gmail is a great business tool that allows your business domain forward through Gmail. Since most of my interaction is through my iPhone Gmail and Mobile Me are great. I have started using Sparrow as a desktop Gmail client. Sparrow – The new mail for Mac from domleca on Vimeo.

from Boston.com, Mullen, and Radian6 They are pulling the sentiment of tweets everywhere to figure out which superbowl ads are the most loved. I love the fact that you can see if its positive or negative feedback. Somehow Groupon is negative and the feedack from Doritos is “wow they made that commercial for under $500 dollars” because that’s what the advertising industry needs is more half as commercials that cost lest than a client dinner. I felt the Doritos commercials were juvenile and it tied the brand to goofy mid 20 males. Coke & Pepsi also disappointed this year, they were very off target with the 2 hand CGI coke characters doing a Trojan horse reference and the Pepsi Max 1st date was a bust. Darth Vader and VW won the audience at out Party.

Drinking Beer and Playing Pool In my efforts to get back involved with the Design community, I have kept the AIGA on my RSS radar. I was very excited to see James Victore coming to the Northwest on his new book tour for “Victore or who made you boss”. I started some emails between AIGA, Victore and Art Chantry to see if they might like to grab lunch. I knew James had visited Art over 18 years ago on a last minute trip to Seattle. I was lucky enough to grab lunch with the both of them. Soon we were playing pool at the Comet Tavern. I got to talk to the both of them about being on your own as a designer and what experience they have had the good, the bad and the ugly.

Flash Ad: BMW Burns Logo onto Cinema-Goers’ Eyes httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GR_vDq2iXJ4&feature=player_embedded The stunt was pulled in a German movie theater. A giant Profoto Pro-7B was hidden behind the screen, a studio flash unit that pumps out enough light to… well, you’ll see. In front of the light was a card, with the letters “BMW” cut into it. During the ad, and its usual guff about living your dreams by wasting fossil fuels, the flash fired and burned the letters into the unsuspecting viewers’ retinas. Then the motorbike pilot-man (that’s what they’re called, right?) on-screen tells everyone to close their eyes. They do, and see the letters projected onto the backs of their eyelids.
James Victore Book Signing Thu / 09.16.10 6:30PM – 9:00PM Seattle Asian Art Museum (SAAM) Get Directions James Victore will inspire you. Pulling no punches, he built his career on the strength of his convictions as much as his skill as a designer and has aimed for one thing in his work: “to make it personal.” In his own words: “James Victore Inc is an independent design studio hell-bent on world domination. We strive to make work that is sexy, strong and memorable.” From a video interview by HillmanCurtis: “Graphic Design is a big f****** club with spikes in it, and I want to wield it.” From an interview on Speak Up: “The fact that I don’t make any distinction between ‘beautiful’ and ‘ugly’ always keeps me pushing to get somewhere new and surprise myself…. Even after a client has been educated and is accepting good work, you have to keep pushing them further. We designers don’t go it alone. We need brave, groovy, sexy clients…” In his new book—Victore or, Who Died and Made You Boss?—with an introduction by Michael Bierut (Abrams; September 2010; U.S.$40.00/CAN $50.00), Victore leads readers through his “greatest hits” and tells the stories behind his [...]
