Travel Notes from Khokana, Nepal

What i’m going to write may not necessarily be about Khokana, but whatever. I feel like knowing myself more during this trip, it’s always hard to grasp change, you know. I hated it. I am a Taurus through and through. I feel that change plays with you to bring out the worst in you. You ought to make bad decisions, and bring out ill feelings. It brings out the worst in you. Yet, we cannot do anything about it. It comes and it goes. When change happens, you are forced to mature - think correctly, feel right and suck it up. Cliche as it may sound, but it’s the only constant thing in this world. You cannot do anything about it. It’s change.

Going to Khokana was indeed a spur of the moment decision. I just googled any place in Nepal near Patan that i haven’t been to. It doesn’t necessarily need to have a good view or a Hindu / Buddhist temple found in it, but just somewhere. Somewhere. I haven’t found a single place within the Kathmandu Valley that i hated anyway. Oh well, maybe Kopan Monastery. But going to Khokana was well worth it. It’s a few kilometers away from Patan, yet the road going there must have felt like eternity. It just keeps on going, and still don’t know when it will end. The In Drive driver wasn’t particularly keen on bringing me but i bargained for a few hundred rupees to bring me there, wait and bring me back to my hotel in Jyatha. The road going to Khokana felt like it was forgotten. It wasn’t bad because it seems like construction started but sadly it wasn’t finished so it was dusty through and through. There’s rocks and cement on the road side where kids walk from house to house. The route is so deceiving because as soon as you reached the bus park, the view appears and you just smile. Suddenly, you are reminded that Nepal has infinite wonders as you get pass the bad roads and air pollution. I didn’t even know this place existed within the Kathmandu Valley. 1 years ago, there were only a list ot places to see that some travelers have visited and a good tourist spot. Now, more places pop up the Lonely Planet reader’s radar. But this place, Khokana, I doubt tourists come here at all.

As soon as i arrived, i saw groups of family picnicking. I saw lovers picnicking. I saw friends picnicking. Everyone’s so happy and merry. You know, “sound of music” can be playing in the background as i walk towards the main area - green grass with gobsmacking views. They’re all chatting and just jappy, occasionally taking a selfie. When you have a view like in Khokana, who wouldn’t? You have a great view of everything here — the Himalayas, the town proper below Patan, the mountain ranges, a sunset and perhaps a sunrise, too. If i could describe Nepal in one place, it would be Khokana. Nepal is all about physical beauty intertwined with a spiritual awakeness. There’s a little Hindu temple near a lone tree. And by the time i reached it, i saw somebody dancing. You couldn’t get more Nepali than that? Later on, i discovered that Khokana was one of the places within the Kathmandu Valley that crumbled to the ground because of the 2015 earthquake.

There were some parts within the park where the view of the Himalayas is a bit obstructed, and i reckon that’s one of the reasons why it’s relatively untouched or non-commercialized. Sadly, like many places in Nepal, trash is everywhere. If only the locals realize, how blessed they are to be at the foothills of one of the most beautiful signs on Planet Earth.

After taking a hundred photos, i played with Google Maps a bit hoping there’s a place of interest somewhere near. I was glad to know there is one and it’s called One Tree Hill - yes like the American TV series.

Where it’s found couldn’t get any more exciting. It’s on top of a hill within a village zig zaging on a one way lane up and down. You get the picture? There was a point where our car needed to stop for a bit to wait for a truck to finish it’s business because it’s a one lane road, and it’s hundred feet cliff on the left and houses on the right. There was no way. Getting on top was a surreal experience, and as a non-climber, was definitely the icing on my cake of a trip to Nepal. It was maybe around four in the afternoon, and the wind decided to crash my photo op. It was unbelievably scary because it felt like i was being blown by the wind. And i’m not necessarily thin. It was so windy, my ears were popping a bit, and my hair was all over the place. Imagine if there were no trees there. Good thing, my monopod was steady enough to capture photos and work its magic capturing the awesome view behind me. Most of the time, i was taking cover from the tree. That tree. The mountain ranges, the sun, the Himalayas, the town was well worth the crucial trek down from One Tree Hill. There was no path at all and it was impeccably steep. I had my lucky boots which i’ve used in Nepal in 2014 and 2015, and it still has no signs of giving up on me. So as a non-climber, i wouldn’t be shy to admit that in order for me to get down, simply sat and slid down. Dusting off all the tree branches, hardened soil and some trash, the mini struggle was finally over.

If that’s not enough, there were probably around 6-8 random dogs surrounding me who were all barking crazily before i arrived but as soon i stepped out of the car, suddently they all turned a blind eye and just accompanied me right. It was surreal but also a bit crazy. Thank God for Techno, our family dog, and his smell lingering in me the whole time. I’never felt more safe.

I told you from the start that my travel notes may not have a connection with Khokana or it may have. I believe Change, in particular, lead me there, to Khokana. Change of plans and change of itinerary, i believe. The universe is telling me something, and all i needed to do was simply listen. I’m always too stubborn not to listen. There are things in life we hoped for will continue, and there are things in life that would only last for a short time.

Travel Notes from Patan, Durbar Square, Nepal

It was a beautiful, breezy and sunny morning at Swarga Heritage Hotel, and it’s my second to the last day in Nepal. I feel a bit sad that the trip is coming to an end but i also feel hopeful because i want to continue what i’ve started before and that is to come back to Nepal next January and every January of the succeeding years. Almost a year is more than enough time to prepare myself going there. More on this on a separate blog. As i finish my House Set breakfast and nth Masala Tea small pot of the trip, i decided to come visit Patan Durbar Square for ‘ol times sake. In my previous blogs, i mentioned that Patan is actually my favorite of the 3 durbar squares. I find that Patan Durbar Square so charming, relaxed and underrated but filled with many hidden gems. It’s so idyllic. Also, i read in my travel notes 10 years ago, Patan is a good alternative place to base yourself in Kathmandu. Should you feel bored, it’s proximity to Kathmandu is easy not too far, and a good starting point to trips outside the Kathmandu Valley.

I purposely asked the In Drive driver to drop me off a kilometer away from Patan. I remembered before how rewarding it was to start from here snaking your way to the durbar square. This is the best route one could take. One that is not shared in guidebooks because you just get dropped of the entrance and you skirt your way around which in hindsight doesn’t make any sense.

True enough, Patan feels more relaxed when not rushed. More people are outside minding their own business and not minding you at all. What a treat. There were heaps of sellers displaying their brassware, a hit among shoppers in Patan. I wished i could have visited Jawalakhel but i could go there next time so I’m not worried. Somehow, the air is also different here. It’s less polluted and dare i say, cleaner. It’s compact and that’s what i love the most about. You can walk from one end to the other in about an hour’s time and not sweat nor touted.

I passed by the hotel where i stayed before in Patan. And the memories of a couple having sex in the early morning made me laugh. I found it very amusing. The location is very central, and although i could remember how the room was very small and maybe not earthquake proof, i wouldn’t mind staying there again just to keep memories alive.

I don’t know if it’s fatigue or i’m just plain lazy but as soon as i arrived, all i want to do was sit and just people watch. And so i did just that for about an hour. Can you imagine? I still took photos of people, the temples, family, clouds, pigeons, etc. It’s still the same, except maybe of the ongoing construction to some places because of the earthquake. That’s how vast the effect of the earthquake was. It’s more than 10 years, and Patan has not fully healed from it. It has not 100% recovered from it.

It was a Saturday when i went. And in Nepal, this is Sunday from the western world. Sundays are like Mondays, everyone goes back to work or school. There were so many young kids doing the same thing as i was — sitting and people watching. Oh, they’re also chatting which i am obviously not doing. Reminder to learn Nepali. I have about until January next year to prepare myself for this.

I promise to finally visit Jawalakhel next time and score a carpet. I love buying stuff for the home and there’s many trinkets of Nepal in my home now — Tibetan chest drawers, candle holders, incense sticks and brass holder, Hindu signages among others. I wouldn’t mind adding more.

Since the weather has been pretty good and the Himalayas are showing up a bit more now (although not as snowy), i made a detour somewhere near before going back to Kathmandu. And it’s probably one of the most beautiful places i’ve ever been to.

Travel Notes from Pashupatinath, Nepal

There is no place on earth as polarizing as Pashupatinath, except maybe Varanasi. But here, it’s everything one could ever think of plus they burn the dead here.

I have very vivid memories of this place. For one, it’s my third time visiting and so every Nepal trip i have, i never fail to show up. I love Boudhanath, but Pashupatinath is a league of its own.

After coming from Dhulikel and a side trip to Bode Thimi, i made my way back to Kathmandu to drop of my rucksacks, eat my Japanese Soba noodles which i purposely brought for moments like this — hungry but with no time to find a restaurant in Thamel.

Pashupatinath has always been in my radar, i just don’t know when i’ll visit this particular trip. I even scheduled it on my first full day but somehow, i overslept and overstayed in my bedroom. And so i fixed my itinerary and postponed going here. I would want to visit Pashupatinath either early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The problem with the former is that it’s bitter cold during this time, and although Nepal is generally safe, somehow early morning isn’t the wisest idea.

It didn’t take long for me to change my clothes and book an In Drive going there. Arriving in Tribhuvam and heading to Thamel, it will also not take long for you to see Pashupatinath. It’s on your right side. Although it has many entrances, make sure to pick one that is the longest so you can see more of the huge complex and build your excitement from there.

As soon as i arrived in Pashupatinath, i have to be honest and say it didn’t feel so authentic. It’s like every single one of those who’re coming have already a preconceived notion of what they will expect. More like a theme park. No surprises, no discovery. Although i didn’t see much tourists not until you reach the bridge and the view of the holy river. It is a holy place and a sacred one for Hindus. Yet, it didn’t feel solemn or sacred to me this time around. By the way, when i arrived, people were already seated. Later on, the continuation of the festival of lights happens in Pashupatinath as well. That’s the reason why many pilgrims have congregated at dusk.

I don’t want to be a downer and say that one shouldn’t visit Pashupatinath. You should. I will even recommend to come visit it first. Or better yet, plan your visit during Maha Shivaratri because as far as i know, my memory of Pashupatinath will always be Maha Shivaratri where it becomes a place like no other. It’s like heaven and hell rolled into ones. It’s the beginning and also the end. It’s life and death.

The longer i stayed in Pashupatinath, the less the place becomes magical. I don’t blame the place because before, 10 years ago, it’s on my list of one of my most unforgettable places on earth. I blame the moment, and maybe the dodgy characters you will encounter now more than ever. Sadhus are uniquely Hindu and many people will argue of their honesty. A hundred rupees for a photo opportunity doesn’t seem too expensive most especially for the kind of life they let go. It’s only a hundred rupees for chrissake. And a lot of foreign tourists say avoid them at all cost. It’s the sacred cows and bulls parading and its pageantry. It’s the entrepreneurs now selling face mask, as inhaling smoke from a burning body is not only unhygienic but also borderline gruesome.

There was a point during my visit that kids get weirded out by me and started talking to me. With a goal to be anonymous and camouflage myself from the crowd, i know that the moment i start speaking is the moment the bays start begging for money. So kept quiet and pretended to be deaf.

As you see, this travel notes of Pashupatinath came in so late because i want to write about it but i also don’t want to write negative about it. Maybe, i’ve outgrown it. Maybe, my third visit is already enough. Who knows?

I stayed for about two hours and watched as the mini festival began. I am blessed to be able to witness it — pilgrims clapping, the pageantry of fire and dance, and just the vibe of prayer and sorrow. I actually didn’t even bother to ask random people about it and what the hell was happening. I told myself, i’ll just research about it when i get to my room, with the hopes of finding out what really is going on. It went on and on. And on and on. I left the place, and made my way to a different exit. I don’t remember if it was the same exit as before during Maha Shivaratri, but this one road looked more residential. I actually didn’t know that there were even hotels and restaurants within the complex.

I tried booking In Drive, but the traffic was super terrible that it’ll take the driver 30 minutes just to make a u-turn. Knowing the exact fare, i hailed a cab to go back to Thamel. I paid the same fare as my In Drive going there.

Oh, and for the first time ever, i paid a ticket to go inside Pashupatinath. I am not upset about it. How can i? It just feels really weird. Like somebody telling me “I told you so!”

Travel Notes from Bode, Thimi, Nepal

Gyanendra, my Newari driver, was so weirded out when i opened the car and got inside. He was staring at me the whole time. Finally, i broke the ice and started talking. He kept on looking at his rear view mirror. That was our story.

The drive from Dhulikel wasn’t too long as is the book to get an In Drive Driver. Nagarkot was a totally different case. In Dhulikel, it seems there are many more taxi drivers en route to and from Banepa Highway. After chatting for a bit and relaxing at the porch at Dhulikel Lodge Resort, it was time for me to move forward with my trip, and go back to the grounds. This means my trip to the mountains is finally over. On my way back to Kathmandu, i thought of stoppong by Bode. Initially, i thought Bode and Thimi are two different places. Little did i know, Bode is actually a part of Thimi in Bhaktapur. So the drive going there, we did pass by Bhaktapur and from there, it’s only about 4 kilometers away.

As soon as you arrive in Bode, you will be greeted by a huge Kamal Pokhari which is a huge pond. During the season, this pond is filled with lotus flowers. When i arrived, it was barren and but still beaming at noon. You know the feeling when you arrive in an old Newari town in Nepal, that’s the feeling in Bode. At around 2PM, the elders congregate around the town overlooking the pond. I didn’t get too much stare from them considering i look like half of the people there. With a shame, i took out my monopod to take a selfie video. That’s when i got the look. I moved forward going down the steps that lead me to a quiet, unassuming Hindu Temple. It must have been the weekday or perhaps it’s still early in the afternoon, coming from Sankhu, the place is peaceful and calm. I sat for a bit, and prayed. I watched the day go by, as it had sweeping views of the town below. Still, there was nothing. Nothingness.

Moving forward, i walked up west to the roundabout and saw old historical buildings. Like anywhere in Nepal, it’s all two storeys with colorful paints of aquamarine and salmon. Looking back at my first impression of Bandipur before, this is the same feeling. I felt like i was transported back in time. Surely, there were more old people than young. I haven’t seen a hotel. One which i would fancy staying at next time. Afternoons are well spent chatting with a neighbor, cleaning the household and just relaxing.

I would have wanted to stay a bit longer not because there were so many more places to visit but because i would have wanted to sit with the lovely chaps, and just people watch, daydream and look back how fortunate i was to be able to visit Bode. I then realize, maybe it’s not just about the mountains of Nepal that make it unique, maybe it’s something else. Something no one else can see but probably feel. , my Newari driver, was so weirded out when i opened the car and got inside. He was staring at me the whole time. Travel Notes from Namobuddha, Nepal

6 kilometers feels like forever as we cruised from the dusty and way back in time, Dhulikel. The road is narrow and long but once it came to a fork, the road became steeper and unpaved. Wait for a few minutes, and you’ll begin to realize for yourself what a great decision it was for you to head to Namobuddha. Back in 2014 and 2015, this place was’t even written in guidebooks. Now, it has become another attraction nearby Dhulikel. Determined to make up for the failed Kopan Monastery trip days ago, i wanted to push through going to a Buddhist Monastery high on top of the mountains. As soon as we reached the halfway mark, we stopped by for a photo opportunity near a giant tree with sublime views.

Nabraj who was my driver from Nagarkot has become a permanent fixture for my mountain trips. Before the trip to Namobudda happened, i bargained for a cheaper price considering it says only 6-8 Kilometers as per Google Maps. Now that i think about it, i could have paid him twice his asking price. The trip was long, arduous and requires a lot of special driving skills to maneuver its impenetrable highways, or lack of road thereof.

Namobuddha is a huge complex with classrooms, monastery and stupa on top. It’s actually the fourth most important Buddhist Monastery - Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery, in the whole country, Nepal. I am quite happy i pursued the trip because it actually gave me an idea for a next outing. What’s particularly interesting is that there’s an affordable hotel found on top of the monastery. All with sweeping views of the Himalayas and expansive town below.

From my many trips across the Kathmandu Valley, Namobuddha has one of the best viewing points there is. The journey going there is also something to look forward to as to the fact there weren’t a lot of tourists there in sight. But word of caution, i don’t think it’s wise to hit the road at night, so plan your stay ahead.

Not too far from Namobuddha is another stupa, equally as beautiful. The atmosphere is just breathtaking with locals lighting up butter candles, monks chanting and with glorious sunset views to boot also. I had a very good feeling about the place - where it felt like it’s almost forgotten, under appreciated yet life changing. Sadly, no hotels anywhere, and not even a homestay.

My trip going there wasn’t long, and the trip took me less than 3 hours from start to finish yet Namobuddha became an instant favorite as Kakani was before to me. It must have been the outstanding views from the monastery above, or serene and calmness of the air, or just that i feel safe and tucked in the great presence of Buddha.

Travel Notes from Dhulikel, Nepal

Same old, same old. Back in 2014, and during my first visit to Nepal, Dhulikel was the destination i chose over Nagarkot. I wanted to experience staying overnight in a mountain retreat outside Kathmandu. The words “less touristy” immediately won me over. 11 years later, it’s still the same hilltop place i know. Still no tourists in sight, and still has some of the worst road conditions you’ll ever encounter within the Kathmandu Valley. The main thoroughfare of Banepa is hot, dusty and chaotic. You need to roll the windows up when bypassing the road. It’s also not recommended to stay there at all unless you’re caught somewhere in the middle of nowhere. But what it lacks in physical beauty, it makes up for its importance if you want to get from Kathmandu to other destinations in the valley rim. You have no choice.

One sharp left leads to a sign “Dhulikel Lodge Resort” so big, it’s borderline cheesy. The place looked the same but the entrance so different. I remember walking towards the lodge resort with my big backpack. Yes, i was a proud backpacker before. My back couldn’t handle it anymore.

There are new rooms being developed, and i am actually staying in a new one found in a new wing. The room may be comfortably big but the view was a little disappointing. The newer rooms are found on the far right of the resort where extensive branches of tree are still undeveloped and a sloping hill covers much of the plains and the mountains views which is a bummer.

I actually wanted to change rooms after checking in but i paid a hefty price for the junior suite. As mentioned before, travel currency nowadays is size of the rooms. It seems these hotels are meant not to be left. I actually did my research and particularly booked higher priced rooms in Nepal because i wanted this trip to be as comfortably luxurious as possible. The locations of these hotels like Hotel Country Villa in Nagarkot and Dhulikel Lodge Resort in Dhulikel is very prime. You don’t have to trek to get a view point at all. Just go outside the balcony of your room and watch the sunrise or sunset, or both. Dhulikel was colder for me and more windy as compared to Nagarkot the previous day. Sadly, i wasn’t able to fully enjoy the balcony seating area because it’s just too damn cold outside. For sunrise, i decided to simply open the window glass door and enjoy the view from inside the room. A huge couch was transformed as an observation seating area for me. It didn’t take too long before the clouds finally roll up, and there’s no view anymore. Small wins! As days pass by, the views of Himalayas are getting better. See, manifesting works. The sunset from the garden area was simply spectacular - actually my most favorite in the whole compound.

During breakfast, i finally saw familiar faces. It’s so nice catching up, and telling them how amazing Nepal is that i had to come back and how fast time flies from 2014 to 2025. They’re so fascinated that i visited again and spent a night again in Dhulikel. The photo i took of us before was such a conversation starter. They begged me to send it to them so they can share with many of their friends. I have a strong feeling, i will be back in Dhulikel. I’ll revisit this travel notes again. But i would like to stay longer, and use Dhulikel as my base.

In one of my many conversations with a random shop seller, he told me how travelers have changed nowadays. More people now have less commitment to actually stay in one place and immerse in local culture. They just come and go, and visit as many places as they can. Although guidebooks are essential tool, one still needs to research and caution themselves. A lot can happen on the road. Sometimes, the best destinations aren’t the ones that are worth remembering. True that.

I wanted to visit the old town of Dhulikel again, but there are some more places that i haven’t been to in my itinerary. I needed to get going. I was chatting with the manager about life in Nepal and the Philippines. I whatsapped our photos from then and now, and how amazing it is to be back. I actually came back to Dhulikel. Not a lot of people can claim that. It was like a homecoming of some sort.

When i was drafting my itinerary, Dhulikel initially wasn’t on the list. I wanted to stay longer in Kathmandu and just do day trips towards the eastern valley and the rim from there. I did this before and found it very convenient. But winter in the mountains is an experience that’ll be worth my while.

Climate change has directly affected Nepal. Gone are days of January winter In Nepal where you need have layers upon layers of clothing. Now, i was actually comfortable with shortsleeved shirts during daytime. The sun was scorching, and 20 degrees during Winter is unheard of. And then it plummets late afternoon and becomes single digit at night.

Dhulikel during sunrise was bitterly cold. And for the first time during the trip, i had to cover my whole face. I had to use heat pack to keep my hands warm amidst my three layer clothing. All is good in the mountains of Nepal.

Travel Notes from Nagarkot, Nepal

I’ve been coming to Nepal more often than any usual tourist. Simply because there’s a lot more reason to visit this amazing country than Everest or as locals call - Sagarthama. There’s just too many regions, and places and locals, and always so little time. Yes, so little time. I spent almost 3 months in Nepal before but still there were so many places i have missed and decided will come for a visit next time. For a country not too big in size and a population not too many compared to the Philippines, Nepal is just jam-packed with many exciting adventures. You may have to draft your itinerary countless number of times before your trip because another place pops up and you want to visit it too.

Surprisingly, this very popular place called Nagarkot has escaped my to visit list before. I’ve read reviews how touristy the place is, and how the crowd can sometimes alter your peace during sunrise. But still, one may never know until you’ve personally been there.

From Sankhu, it must have taken us forever. Forever doesn’t mean how long the trip took us but how we endured never ending sharp curves with killer cliffs. No pun intended. The driver and I cruised high altitude roads towards the town of Nagarkot. Obviously, the highway is called Nagarkot, too. Can you believe some travelers navigate the highway at night? They leave Kathmandu around 5 in the morning and reach Nagarkot after an hour just in time for sunrise and the start of the trek. Nagarkot is a very popular trekking destination, and sunrises and sunsets are one of the best ways to enjoy the place. You have sweeping views of the Himalayas from cool vantage points within Nagarkot.

My driver was actually calm and very precise considering some parts of the Nagarkot Highway needs repair (as many Nepali Roads are), and the unmanned cliffs are a bit terrifying, to be honest. From Sankhu, we bypassed the main highway passing through a Hindu Temple called ??? True enough, most people who go to Nagarkot hire their own car and so a bus stop is simply a bus stop. To get from the bus stop to your hotel, you need to walk. It would be best to plan this ahead of time as you don’t want to navigate Nagarkot and its dusty highway on foot, day time or worse, at night.

Hotel Country Villa is just how i imagined it to be. With its unassuming entry, the experience begins as you enter and what view would be waiting for you. The hotel is pretty well-maintained. Perhaps one of the many reasons this hotel is very popular with foreign tourists and locals alike. The staff are professional, and so checking in and out was a breeze. I arrived on a Wednesday, and yet it’s not entirely devoid of crowd. People eat breakfast early, and leave right away. I don’t understand. Nagarkot is really very popular, and for one good reason - the view from high up the mountains. That is if you’re lucky. I am about 20% lucky because the peaks show up for a bit, but mostly it’s all clouds.

After checkin in, i found time to nest and just prepare myself for mountain weather. I ordered another small pot of Masala in one of the many resting places in the hotel, and off i go just doing absolutely nothing. Well, sitting and relaxing. I thought i would be able to catch up on my reading, but i was wrong. I couldn’t take my eyes away from the view. I hoped for a better picture at sunset or sunrise. But like i always do from hereon, accept that things happen for a reason. I may not see the Himalayas clearly now, but soon i will be. I am manifesting.

I ordered Chicken sizzler with rice and it was just okay. Probably not the best Chicken dish i’ve had in Nepal. It seems Chicken is quite popular as even basic menus usually have it. It didn’t take long for me to finish the meal. I was stuffed. Later on, i enjoyed the rest of the sunset view from my balcony. Every now and then, i would go outside the and people watch see what’s happening. And then i would go back to reading my Lonely Planet Nepal guidebook again from my comfortable bed. I actually paid quite a premium for this accommodation, and it didn’t dissapoint. It’s also surprising that the room was warm. I don’t know if it’s because of its cabin feel with teak wooden floor and ceiling but it does its job to control the temperature. I actually had to take off my lounge socks because it was getting warm already. My suite in Kathmandu was colder but it’s because the room’s interior design is classic Newari.

Sadly, i barely slept and up until now i have no idea why. It must have been the elevation or too much Masala Tea, perhaps? In no time, i woke up to an alarm on my phone at 5AM, and sunrise doesn’t happen until 45 Minutes later. As early as that time, staff at the hotel are already setting up the place for breakfast buffet which starts at 6:30AM. It’s so cold outside yet they have to power through early morning because it’s work. They need to earn to survive.

I now need to talk about the working conditions of many NepalIs. I reckon those who work in the hospitality business as managers and even staff have it better compared to taxi drivers or construction workers who start work as early as 6AM and come back home at 10PM. It made me think how lucky i am staying at a “monggo” place, that’s expensive in Nepali, with a room so big an actually family can fit on it.

10 years ago, i didn’t have this realization. I was just exploring. Now, reality is more glaring than ever. Perhaps, i am starting to fully embrace the Nepali culture and traditions, and realizations like these would soon happen. It seems me being able to come back to Nepal three times already says so much about the privilege i have. The only thing i can offer to my Nepali brothers is a few minutes of amazement when i meet them. That i look Nepali but i am not. That i’m able to speak a phrase or two and my accent is perfect yet i am not. People are just so amazed. One person even told me maybe in my past life i was born Nepali, or that my mother or father was Nepali.

Anyway, the mountains appeared for a bit around noon when everybody left already. Don’t believe guidebooks when they say that the best time to view the Himalayas is early morning or late afternoon. It changes. You’ll never know. If you stay longer, you’ll reap what you saw.

I was glad to be able to visit Nagarkot and experience it for myself. Will i go back again? Probably not. Nepal is just too blessed. There’s countless number of view points around. Just do your research. Find one that you like, and treasure it.

By the way, getting In Drive from Nagarkot to anywhere within the Kathmandu Valley is not easy but it’s possible. I had to offer a much higher rate when i booked for a driver just because i am time dependent. I don’t want to lose sunlight while on the road and not get the full potential of the mountains. Little did i know, i was in for a treat to a place i’ve visited 11 years ago. I will be staying in the very same resort. I just hope to see familiar faces. Dhanyabad!

Travel Notes from Sankhu, Nepal

Back in the days, there was no In Drive to book a driver. You just hail a taxi cab in one of the many busy streets of Thamel and pray that you get a nice driver. Well, everyone’s nice here in Nepal. Never had a problem. Now, going from point A to B has become painless. Last time, i was going over my draft itinerary trying to figure out where i will go today. I am sleeping overnight in the mountains outside of Kathmandu, and Sankhu is on the way. I might as well pay a visit.

I’ve been reading my past blog entries and Sankhu has been mentioned countless number of times. It’s one of the most highly recommended places to go to in the Kathmandu Valley, and yet i haven’t been there. What the heck. Reading my travel notes, i reckon it’s either i missed the bus going there or i am losing sunlight to go back to Kathmandu that’s why i always forego the trip there. This time around, i surely made time.

Raj Baruwal was my driver for the day. He will take me to Sankhu first. If the taxi cab i rode before was bad, today was worse. The white Maruti Suzuki i rode today should retire. It’s that bad. My driver didn’t speak any English, but was very polite, timid and shy. He’s quite aggressive as a driver, and very eager to tour me around. I was actually surprised later on because i thought he would just drive - not realizing he’s willing to guide me all day.

The route took me to Boudhanath Road again, where it’s traffic and polluted. But once you’ve passed by the area, the trip becomes faster and the mountain ranges appear from the horizon. You’ll feel as if everything’s already moving fast. I am still trying to study the route the driver took to Sankhu because all in all, it took us about an hour to reach the place. We surely were in for a treat.

There must be a festival of some sort because throngs upon throngs of people come and go to the Vajra Yogini Temple. Later on, i found out that it’s the Madhav Narayan Festival. The driver told me he would come with me which again is a nice gesture. With too many people going in, this chap helped me in the maze going to the temple. I took about a thousand photos because festivals in Nepal are a different league. If you can, time your visit during one. You won’t be disappointed. Later on, i realized that all throughout this particular trip, there’s always a festival wherever i am going.

Even for a non-Hindu, this visit has become a meaningful, albeit unforgettable. Coming from the Philippines, and even for Asia, a Hindu festival is always mind blowing. One thing i enjoyed during the trip was observing life as it happens. Walk around, look around. There were many people bathing in the holy river, lighting butter candles, worshipping the Hindu gods, asking for blessings from Sadhus. The infinite sound of drums and bells, the chatters and clapping still ring in my ear as i type this.

As i look back, it must be the right timing for me to visit Sankhu. Reading about it the other night, i thought it’s a sleepy and quiet town. Well, after today, it was the exact opposite. Today reminds me of Diwali which i was lucky to experience in Varanasi in India back in 2011, only today was daytime. I realized there are really so many Hindu festivals, and the interest is growing on me. More festivals to visit soon, perhaps.

Upon further research, i discovered that in India celebrating the same festival, and about 30 people died during a stampede. Truly a heartbreaking news. At Sankhu, heaps of people gathered and for a bit, i got worried that there might be too many people around. But once you see the police manning the place, it’ll keep you calm.

Back to Raj Baruwal who takes the worse photos. Sorry dude! But when i take his photos, it’s always perfect. Now that i think about it, maybe it’s a sign for me to stop taking selfies or asking some to take my photos. Instead, i should just take photos of places and people. This has more meaning. You don’t always have to be the center of attention of your world. It’s not always about you. You see, you get lessons from anywhere and everywhere, if you only look with eyes wide open.

He made a sign, holding his pinky finger which means he wants to go to the toilet. I never heard of that. Earlier, he didn’t even drink water when i offered to buy him one. Today, i am in a limbo. I don’t know which made a more lasting impression to me — Sankhu and the Madhav Narayan Festival or my driver / guide - Raj Baruwal.

In In Drive, you can check how many kilometers the ride was, and it’s 103.5 Kilometers in total. Wow! It seems paying 4,785 Nepalese Rupees for the ride to Sankhu and my final destination for the day was such a bargain.

Travel Notes from Kathmandu Durbar Square, Nepal

It must have been my 10th time visiting the durbar square and yet it always feels so magical, so out of this world. It seems like there is an invisible energy that draws you in. You feel amazed and blessed at the same time. You know what’s even more recommended, you come at night when there’s no more tourists. Locals go to have puja stops, merchants waiting for a bit to close shop and lovers chatting in the cold January weather in the steps of the temples. What a vibe! Next time you visit the Durbar Square, do so at night and you’ll be rewarded with an experience like no other. For example, the Kal Bhairav is flocked by Hindus worshipping and you get to really see up close and personal how one Hindu worships and go on with their lives after a prayer. Be discreet, and they won’t mind you.

I’ve seen vloggers (you call them now as i am still a blogger) and do their first impression of Nepal and they immediately go to Kathmandu Durbar Square, and yet they don’t get to fully immerse themselves because they have many stops to go for the day. The beauty of Nepal is you have to visit the place in different times of the day, and in different days. I went on a Tuesday night and yet it feels like the weekend or a holiday. I cannot say the same thing for the day but i will in a few days. Let’s see. I have been to the three durbar squares before and Patan has always been my favorite, followed by Kathmandu and sadly, i have to put Bhaktapur the last. I find it too chaotic for me, and there’s very little light at night which makes the trip there not as comfortable or secure as i hope it would be. Although one rooftop restaurant there serves the best chicken fried rice ever. I will edit this with the name.

I was actually thinking where else to go after Boudhanath. It was either Pashupatinath or Kathmandu Durbar Square. I chose the latter because i want to visit the cremation ghats on another day, sunrise or sunset perhaps.

I am eating my breakfast now at the courtyard of Swarga Heritage Hotel and i could’t finish anymore my French Toast with my small pot Masala Tea.

I also love that i am writing everything here on Blogger so i won’t forget my successes and mishaps on the road. Imagine, i started blogging again because of Nepal after 10 years. And i want to continue doing so. All for the love of Nepal!

Next stop, another place i haven’t been to before. I hope everything pans out great because transportation seems to be a problem for me, or lack thereof.

Travel Notes from Bhoudanath

I feel there are very few places in the world like Boudha that can move you spiritually without you even knowing it. To be honest, i am a bit lost for words until now that’s why it’s taking longer for me to write my travel notes about this place. I’ve been to Boudhanath maybe 5 times, and everytime i’m there i can’t help but realize that it’s a such a dreamland to keep still and be quiet — focusing on Zen Buddhism, and just let go of everything that promotes stress. You go there to free your mind from anything. You’re like dying to be born again. You don’t think of anything else. When people ask me what’s the number one place to visit within the Kathmandu Valley — it’s Bhouda. It’s Bhouda!

Last time i went to Bhouda, i actually stayed overnight at Comfort Guesthouse so i can watch the stupa from dusk till dawn. It’s one of the highlights of my three month expedition to Nepal back in 2015. This time around, i may not have the same luxury of time but what i do have now is a much more calm mind and purposeful drive. You see, what’s particularly nice about Bhoudanath is that any religion is welcome here. And as a Christian “trying” to practice Buddhism, i feel a surge of energy, like Lord Buddha guiding me as his son. As i move clockwise around the stupa, and focusing on my intent as i say the mantra while spinning the wheels (which i discovered before to have actual scriptures written on it).

Buddhism is a very interesting religion because it’s very simple to follow. So simple that my favorite thing to say is that my religion is very simple. My religion is kindness. You don’t need to complicate things in order to be a good person. Whatever you do comes back to you ten-fold.

I went up the stairs that lead up to the Himalayan View Restaurant and started reading my book. All this while i was eye to eye with the Bhouda. It didn’t take long for my chicken fried rice to arrive, and me to finish it in less than 10 minutes. The staring contest was truly unforgettable. If you’re reading this, the views from this restaurant and the outdoor seating are the best. Price is very cheap considering you have premium seats. Go there.

I continued on walking clockwise while i was praying. This happened maybe 3 more times before my feet start to hurt. During my last interval, i went inside the corners of the stupa and found myself passing by Buddhist pilgrims praying. Without a doubt, sunset is the best time to visit Boudhanath. While everyone is rushing going here at noon as part of the UNESCO heritage sites tour, one misses this epic moment — when the energy from day to night is full on and the chants become louder, worshippers more tantric. It’s an out of this world experience. I have a 49 second video with me for keeps. Whenever i feel like my life is on a limbo, i’ll just watch it and keep calm. Then, i know how to move forward.

Travel Notes from Budhanilkantha in Bagmati, Kathmandu, Nepal

I can’t believe i haven’t been here. What was i thinking? The day started late as usual, but also because i kinda planned it to be that way. I didn’t have to leave too early because i only need to be in Boudhanath before dusk so i have plenty of time. This trip is slow travel to the core.

I’ve been to many places outside Kathmandu but i haven’t been to Budhanilkantha. It seems this trip is all about visiting places i haven’t been to before. I read in my horoscope before to finally get out of my shell and start discovering new places again. I baby myself to go to the same places that are in my comfort zone. I didn’t plan it this way but i feel like ticking off the list of every Nepali tourist place there is. And thankfully, i’ve been blessed to have been to a lot of places. If you get to read this, feel free to browse through my travel notes section of Nepal. There’s a lot. And because i am simply staying in and around Kathmandu, i have plenty of time to soak in the senses and just relax in every place i go to.

This place reminds me so much of Dakshinkali, 22KM from Kathmandu, and it’s infamous Hindi God Kali sleeping in a reclining position in a water shed. As always, non-Hindu and non-Buddhists aren’t allowed to go inside and see Lord Mahavishnu, as they should be out of respect. People are taking off their shoes, worshipping and praying, coming out of the place blessed. I sat down in one of the benches trying to remember every butter candle, every lotus, the kids studying to be monks, and occasional besties chatting and taking photos. There was not a single tourist in sight in this place. I reckon everyone’s in Pokhara now.

I realized how it would really be nice to be able to speak actual Nepali and have a long conversation, and not the usual Jerik Gurung. If i really want to formalize the once a year visit to Nepal in January, then i have to widen my vocabulary. I get a couple of stares because i look like everyone else but i take photos like a tourist, and i sound so different. Also, i wasn’t able to go inside the sleeping Hindu God Mahavishnu water tank. Later on, i discovered that it’s actually the largest stone carving in Nepal at 5 meters.

I don’t know if there’s a ticket to get inside Budhanilkantha, but i wasn’t asked. Later on, even in Boudhanath and Kathmandu Durbar Square. This has always been status quo. And Nepal understands. I hope so.

The ride going there was bad as expected but what made it a whole lot worse is the fact that it has become more dusty times ten. With no air condition on, i still had to close the windows because the air has become too dusty. Pollution has become a lingering problem eversince i arrived. And yet, Bangkok has worse pollution. And i’m going there after Kathmandu.

I want to know what Nepal is doing to eradicate this huge of a problem. Pollution is really Nepal’s biggest problem. And 10 years have passed, and it has become worse. How about 10 years from now? In Sagarmatha, we trust.

Travel Notes from Kopan Monastery in Kathmandu, Nepal

What a terrible waste of time, energy and Nepalese Rupees today is. I’ve been reading my Lonely Planet Nepal travel guide, and on the edge of Shivapuri National Park is the now popular Kopan Monastery. Looks interesting plus i haven’t been here. There are only a handful of tourist places now in the Kathmandu Valley that i haven’t visited, and Kopan is one of them. As part of my rented car from Budanalikantha, me and my driver Yogi Gautam mazed our way to Kopan. The ride was long and zig zag going up, snaking our way to one of the worst road condition i have ever experienced in my lifetime. It didn’t help that we’re riding a beat up, worn down White Tata Express. Terrible! As soon as i arrived at the gate, the security officer asked if i had a booking. Of course, not. What the hell?! Who books for a tourist spot ahead of time to take photos and visit the exterior of the place? This is a first. The driver talked to him, begging for us to just come in for a few minutes to take photos and maybe walk around for a bit. Mind you, the ride going there wasn’t short. And in its maze like path, you become dizzy. Sadly, he said no. And he left us - bored and nonchalant. Like nothing and without any consideration. I was shooed away from a Buddhist Monastery - the irony of it all. I think, this is the first time i experienced something like this in Nepal. Why the heck would Lonely Planet put Kopan Monastery in their guidebook and not put a reminder to book before going there. I get that maybe they’re quite strict with the visitors, but hey i don’t even have to go inside. I just need to make sure that i didn’t go all the way there for nothing. A photo or two wouldn’t hurt. I left the place, confused but as in my previous blog — reminder to always have a back up plan. Things don’t always go how we envisioned them to be. That is a way of life.

The driver must have felt my disappointment. But i wasn’t taking it too seriously - just calm and collected and ready to move on. In true Jerik fashion, i just kept quiet like i always do. Meanwhile, my driver kept on stopping by every temple he sees so i could take photos. It’s not his fault really but i can sense the Nepali pride in him. He would do his best to make up for the disappointing Kopan Monastery. This kind gesture is very much appreciated and one of the reasons why Nepali people are very close to my heart.

I just started reading a book called Simple Living by Shunmyo Masuno and its 100 daily practices for Zen Buddhism. I am pretty sure this debacle is one of them.

I’ve arranged 2,000 Nepalese Rupees earlier via in Drive to take me to 3 places with waiting time im between — Budhanalikantha, Kopan Monastery & Boudhanath. I’ve researched the route and which place to go first. This is the best route possible one can take yet only to be disappointed with Kopan Monastery.

On my way to Boudhanath, we stopped at this view point, one where no guidebook has ever written before, where one could see the whole Kathmandu City from a great vantage point. I took photos of the driver, and he took mine. In true Nepali fashion, mine wasn’t so good. I laughed it all out. Because today I realized - sometimes it’s not even the photos that matter. One can have the best photo with no meaning. I, on the other hand, had a not so good photo but with memories of failed Kopan Monastery. A selfie with Yogi Gautam would suffice. All is good in this 8 degrees weather as i type my experiences yesterday.

Travel Notes from Kathmandu, Nepal 2025 Part 2

On my first day here in Nepal, i took things slow. Walking around the same path as before was simply magical. You really have to be here to experience it. I am pertaining to the the lingering smell of incense, masala being cooked and just the musky afternoons (minus the pollution) were all spectacular, and stellar to me.

I chanced upon this shop Root Nepal Handicraft and looked around for incense sticks. I have been big on it since late last year. I light up mornings and afternoon. And i fancy buying here in Nepal would be a good idea. It’s called a Zodiac Incense and it only costed me 300 rupees for 16 sticks that’ll burn for 45 minutes each. I actually didn’t bother to check if that’s the right price, because in itself it’s already a very cheap price.

I also checked out other shops in the main shopping area until i got hungry. Initially, i was looking for fried rices but weirdly couldn’t find one. I checked the menu at this fancy place called Third Eye and ordered stuffed chicken breast with mashed potatoes and vegetables - it’s actually quite good although not very Nepali. The ambiance is also nice with a little fireplace in the courtyard to keep diners alfresco some warmth. The staff are pretty good to, and all weirded out by this Nepali looking dude who’s no Nepali. Ha ha I also ordered a small pot of masala tea which i drank to the last drop. Never a day, without a small pot or two. Because the tea is usually served without sugar, you fix your own. I’ve prepared for this before arriving and bought with me zero sugar stevia.

And since i wanted more incense sticks, the walk lead me back to the same shop. This time, i bought Heart Chakra Incense for 150 rupees and an Ohm incense stick holder.

There are so many more shops that i should check out but Kathmandu and the Thamel area dies down after dinner so i have to reschedule. Surprisingly for a polarizing city, Kathmandu is very solemn at night. I headed back to the room which is called a Queen Heritage Suite Room 107, and unpacked and nested. At 12MN, i was dozing off already. Here in Nepal, i sleep early and wake up early - the kind of habit i want to continue.

Travel Notes from Kathmandu, Nepal 2025 Part 1

Global Warming is for real!!! After two visits in Nepal in the past, during the same month, i reckon i already know the max and minimum temperature of Kathmandu but boy i was wrong. Back in 2014 and 2015, temperatures in Kathmandu have been consistently chilly from day to night, and gets really really cold at dawn. That’s it. I’ve memorized it already. 10 years later, temperatures now are as high as 18 to 20 degrees Celsius at noon, and now as i type this in my suite here in Jyatha, it’s already 11 and will get lower at 8 degrees later. The gap is so wide, i was so confused what to bring - a puffer or fleece.

Thankfully, i brought with me an extra warm heat tech and a fleece and now warming up in my bed. P.S. Accuweather has failed me again. It says warmer than actual temperature. Wrong! Wrong! It’s becoming brutally cold at night.

What a day it has been. What a blessed day it has been, to see the Himalayas and Sagarmatha from the window seat of the plane. Because i got the best seat in the house at 3F, this American mom asked if i could airdrop a couple of photos so she could show it to her sons who’re all eager to see Everest. A lot of people say go to Nepal during autumn. I say, winter really is so underrated and there’s not a lot of tourists.

Suddenly, my fear of flying was non existent. I skipped watching my second movie on my iPad mini because i was already too busy looking at the window. My focus was on the great majestic mountain ranges. Zeroed in on that. I’m literally flying over the roof of the world. What an experience! In the two previous ocassions that i flew to Kathmandu, i don’t remember having this view. It’s a very rewarding and touching feeling — another core memory.

Arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport, i noticed a lot of differences since i embarked 10 years ago. The security, for one, got well… stricter. I don’t remember having to submit to checking your cabin luggage before you pick up your checkin luggage. Does that make sense? Forgive me for it has been half a decade since i last made a blog entry. Anyway, this is after the immigration check. But for security or safety reasons, i have no objection. The Visa on Arrival payment line is so long considering almost all of foreigners will have to pay VOA. So you can imagine the number of people falling in line. More payment counters, perhaps?

The immigration is always long in any country (depending on the arrival time) so i have no comment on this one.

The ATM, as expected, wasn’t working to get me some Nepalese Rupees. I’ll try to find a Nabil Bank (The Green One) ‘coz i used it the last time. Good thing i bought US Dollars with me. Because you always need to have a back up plan for everything — the cardinal rule of traveling. ATM’s aren’t always 100% functional. Fact.

The hotel where i am staying at provided a free pick up service. I assume the driver has been waiting for more than an hour because it takes a really long time upon arrival until you finally leave the airport.

The ride from the airport to the hotel was a breeze. I tried to open the windows halfway to get a sense and sight and the smell of the city i have missed the most. 15 minutes later, the driver asked me to close the window. Too much dust, he said. I agree.

Oh, Kathmandu i have missed you so much. The ride took me to see new places before i got to Thamel — Hilton & Marriott, a new mall and a rave club. Sadly, the roads are still in very bad condition. Just like before. And you have to move constantly because there’s no lane for pedestrians. This means you walk where the car passes through. Even the road leading to my hotel, Swarga Heritage, was in an unbelievably horrible condition. I am still trying to figure out if indeed the hotel has a good location or not. Mind you, Swarga Heritage Hotel is #3 on TripAdvisor in the whole of Kathmandu. After re-familiarizing myself again around the Thamel area, i guess i can say it’s not so bad. Hotel’s location is actually in Jyatha - an up and coming district of Kathmandu where you are near Thamel but minus the hustle and bustle. I can’t wait to eat breakfast tomorrow so i can make a final review. Have a pot of masala tea and freshly cooked omelet. Oh and by the way, the hotel serves breakfast until 3PM — the only hotel to do so in the city.

Travel Notes from Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok, Thailand

It’s only barely 2 months since my last travel, yet it feels like a lifetime. I am so used to traveling every month that one missed month of travel and I feel like a newbie. The flight from Manila to Don Mueang was late for about an hour. Good thing my connecting flight doesn’t leave until the next day at noon. Don Mueang is an old airport, albeit it looks like I was transported back to the 80s. Everything looks older. The only positive thing is that the line towards the immigration is a lot shorter. In no time, I was ready to leave. But first, 7-11. So good to finally buy my usual favorites - Spinach & Cheese Sandwich & Green Tea Genmai. I hoard this drink and take it home with me back in Manila.

It’s only about 10 minutes to get to my airport hotel. I paid P162 Baht via Grab and arrived and checked in at Moji Hotel in a breeze. My stay doesn’t come with a breakfast. Good thing, I bought a Ham Sandwich & Banana for breakfast. I am such a light breakfast eater. That’s why it’s impractical for me to avail of a buffet breakfast in any hotel.

I booked my accommodation via Agoda. Now that I think about it, the room isn’t at par with what I paid for. There are visible signs of use, scratches on the floor, paint chipping, and bed sheets that looked like they’ve been used overtime. I don’t know if it’s the location, but there were mosquitoes in the room. Would I stay again at Moji? Probably not. After long years of travel, I’ve become more choosy with where I stay. Gone are the days of me staying in hostels and dodgy guesthouses. And room size has now become a top priority. My last draw was in Hanoi. Will share this story in another post.

I woke up at around 7 a.m., and prepared myself my breakfast. I am not worried about leaving late because it only takes 10 minutes to get to Terminal 1, and I availed of an AirAsia Fast Pass. It enables me to have a separate check-in counter, ideally a priority over the immigration, etc. I just hope Cebu Pacific will have something like this in the future. I’ll purchase this again next time I fly AirAsia. And looking at the signboard - Vientiane, Luang Prabang, and Siem Reap caught my eye. I’ve always wanted to fly there bound for Kashmir. Let’s see. I think I am ready to come back to India for the third time.

I am writing this blog on board my flight. In less than an hour, hopefully, the view of the Himalayas will appear on my window seat. I specifically purchased a seat 3F so I have a view of the mountains, if it’s not too cloudy. In the meantime, I am finishing the movie Solo Con Tu Parejas directed by Alfonso Cuarón, back in the day. Yesterday, I watched Yolo, a Chinese film, and it was great. I can’t believe the lead actress didn’t use any prosthetics. It took 3 years to film because the lead actress started as overweight, and after a diet and intense workout regimen which included boxing, she lost 50 kilos. Wow! So inspiring!

I’ll be more focused with my Muay Thai training once I get back to Manila. My main goal has never been to lose weight but to exercise my heart. It’s a bonus if I become thinner, though.

ALL-TIME FAVORITE POST FROM 2011 RE-BLOGGED: I have always been fascinated with Visayas, and every province exudes an undeniable unique charm that i just can't get enough of. I am almost done circumnavigating all the island provinces of Visayas, a little bit more and i am done. After traveling around the mystical island of Siquijor, it's time to see the beauty of Negros Oriental.

Part of the fourth largest island in the Philippines, Negros Oriental will calm you, making you forget the hustle and bustle of city life. Often called a university town because of the popular schools around the province like Siliman, St. Pauls, Negros Oriental State, Negros Oriental breeds young dwellers seeking higher learning. The people here are relatively young and around the city, you could see bunch of men and women laughing, roaming around the beautiful Rizal boulevard. What a delight!

One of the reasons why i made my way to Negros Oriental is because i have heard excellent reviews from people who've been there and from people i know who used to live there. They say the true gem of the province is the people, i never knew the natural wonders were just as unbelievable.

I arrived in Dumaguete International Airport early in the morning. I headed straight to the port a few hours after. After basking some sun, and exploring Siquijor on a motorbike for a few days, i returned to Dumaguete to explore the province. Most of the passengers on the flight i took were locals coming back to celebrate the new year in their hometown while i was the lone traveler from Manila.

Dumaguete is a city but not quite. I find it showing signs of modernism and the bigness of the future, but it's still a simple, laid-back province. I hope it stays that way. I often wake up early in the morning to see the majesty of the mountain ranges. I would walk around in my shorts and sando under the heat of the sun, and ride one of those tricycles if i get tired. Most of the time i find myself wandering around the outskirts of the city, far from the busy streets and the group of people. That, i enjoyed a lot. I often ride the motorbike with my awesome guide/driver/friend and cruise the towns of Valencia, Sibulan and Zamboanguita. As i recall my trip, i am blessed for that one week amazing trip.

The days I spent traveling in Negros Oriental were filled with a lots of adventure. I find myself getting acquainted more and more with the province's culture and the beautiful people. I went to waterfalls, stopped by to see the awesome view beside the cliff, and most of the time doing absolutely ridiculous activities. One night, i wanted to skip drinking so instead of heading to the dive bars along Rizal boulevard, i went to the mall and watched a funny movie. It was an unforgettable experience and i almost found myself living just like one of the locals. I felt great and alive.

I miss Negros Oriental because after months of hectic living in the city, the province painted a beautiful memory in my mind even for a short while. And for that, i will never forget. It was pure bliss, i have to say!

Dōmo arigatō Yoshi for Visiting Me in Manila, Philippines

Last May Brian (New Zealand), Anieka (England) and Baz (Australia) came to the Philippines just in time for my birthday. The last time they were here, we went to heaps of places around the metro and even went to Boracay. It was hell lot of fun. It felt like i was traveling also which is good for someone like me who cannot travel 12 months every year. So now that Yoshi is confirmed to be going to the Philippines, that makes him my fourth foreign visitor. I love friends coming over to the Philippines. There's a great feeling of being you know... "special" that friends will actually take time, spend some money and travel thousands of miles just to hang out with me and visit my beautiful country.

As i said, when Yoshi went to Manila, he came bearing gifts.

It was an immense feeling. Hey c'mon we're all backpackers here and we all know every cent counts. But still, he took time out to buy something for me and my friend. That is very thoughtful of him. But of course who wouldn't be excited to receive gifts. C'mon right? Let's open it shall we.

He actually gave me two different gifts. One is something edible and the other one is something i could literally display in my room which i love. My room is small but i display my most prized possessions which includes photos i took from around the world, investment on art pieces, among other things.

He said i would love it. First thing that comes to mind. FOOD. Who doesn't love food?>

After downing a couple of bottles of beer that night in 77, i needed to eat something. So there i was opening Yoshi's gift to his beloved Filipino friend. Everyone, meet my best friend every night for the week till i literally ate everything, maybe a few given to my mom and my sisters.

KAMOME NO TAMAGO

...Kamome No Tamago (かもめの玉子). This is a type of bean cake designed to resemble an egg ("tamago" is the Japanese word for egg, kamome refers to a seagull). A standard package (pictured below) of the regular variety includes 6 "eggs" for about 525 yen ($4.80 USD). The standard eggs are about the size of an actual large egg. They are filled with yellow beans and covered in a thin shell of cake with a thin covering of "white chocolate" (not really chocolate). They are mildly sweet and make a satisfying snack.

I am not really good with food reviews. It's either i like it or not. And this one is One Big Like! The other gift my friend gave me is a mad Japanese Samurai Soldier Toy. I forgot how it is called. I've mistaken it for transformers at first sight. Either way, it's a figurine that showcases Japan's biggest contribution to the world - awesome toys.

NOTE: If you have any idea what this is or what it is called, feel free to comment down below so i would not be calling him bad ass badboy anymore.

So Yoshi did brave the Northern Luzon region and experienced Banaue Rice Terraces. A few months before, he already told me there's one place he wants to see in the Philippines and that is the terraces so i am pretty sure he's dead set on that one. He came back to Manila armed with interesting stories and so many awesome adventures to tell. First one, his tour guide in Banaue is named none other than... Jerik, same as my name. And Yoshi told me he was a very good guide, friendly and very honest. Like all Jeriks in the world are. Before he left, i made a thorough research of Banaue and suggested he visit a couple of places. Advised him of prices and how to haggle and not be tricked. He stayed in a good hotel fronting the terraces and had very delicious Filipino food. He also made new friends, a couple of westerners, Filipino tourists, family staying beside his room, etc. He arrived middle of the night. At around 3AM, i got a call saying he was dropped off by the bus in Cubao and i said, well then good as it's nearer in my place in QC. He told me the taxi driver was charging him for P900. What the hell???? I told my friend, hand that taxi driver your phone but keep an eye on him. And i told the driver that the going rate from anywhere in Cubao to my place is not more than a hundred pesos. After a few taxi drivers went by, someone agreed on the normal price. Good thing Yoshi mentioned he has a Filipino friend who has advised him of the prices. So folks, if you're traveling to the Philippines just say i know the prices and...

ALWAYS ASK FOR THE METER!!!

When Yoshi arrived. Never ending stories, left and right. He couldn't contain his excitement sharing his brief but well worth trip to the mountains. His gorgeous photos of Banaue Rice Terraces were so amazing, i felt really bad i didn't go. One with him, two that i haven't visited it yet. If folks like Yoshi who's not from here can appreciate the immense beauty of the Philippines, so should we Filipinos right?

At round 5AM, we were watching TV and so many stories were shared how it is in Japan and how it is in the Philippines. It was good catching up and sharing what's going on with our lives for the past seven months.

Basically, he told me how fast paced life is in Japan particularly in Tokyo and Kyoto where he lives. He works on odd hours. I assume because of the weather and temperature he's studying. I don't know. He told me how expensive it is in Japan even for him. Imagine his round trip flight from Tokyo to Manila was around $1500. He also said that Japanese people are really bad in English. It's so hard to study. Because unlike how English is spoken and written with subject and then verb, Nihoŋɡo is spoken and written with no fixed order. Like for example the verb comes first followed by the greeting then the subject last. Apart from the hard course on English, Japanese people really don't like to travel outside the country. Yeah you could see Japanese tourists in Paris, London, but instead more Japanese choose to travel within their own country because they feel not being able to speak in English outside will give them such a hard time. So what they do instead is buy all the expensive material things. Yeah all the Vuittons and latest gadgets.

We talked about so many things. And it was very nice talking to him and exchanging notes. Instead of him getting to know more about my country, i was very curious listening to his stories of Japan. After a few hours of talking. I got up and got my Lonely Planet Asia Book and flipped on Japan.

There he was guiding me photo by photo - how fun it is to hike up Mt. Fuji, how expensive it is to ride the bullet train, how i could possibly take a photo with a Geisha someday but Yoshi being brutally honest with me spending a night with one will cost me a fortune, how cheaper it is to stay in love hotels than in lofts and hotel rooms, how porn is sold alongside coca cola in can on a vendo machine. So many things. I am literally wandering at 7AM.

We were waiting for his flight back to Tokyo scheduled at around 2PM. We went down to the dining room for lunch. During this time he got to see the rest of my house. My house filled with lovely furniture and a comfortable couch. My photos together with family pictures and swarovski crystals. He sat on the couch and said, "you have a very lovely house". I could literally see through his eyes how much he is loving the feeling of living in the Philippines. He got to eat "Paksiw na Isda" and "Giniling na Baboy" and as soon as i introduced him to my mom, she hugged Yoshi like her own son.

We got out of the house for a bit and smoked. It was sunny, almost scorching because of the midday sun, the total opposite of the temperature now where he is from. While he's on his usual weatherman vest and cargo pants, he walked for a bit looking around my village and he even took a photo of my house and asked if i could have his photo taken with the house too. I said, yeah sure man!

A few hours after, the taxi arrived not going to the airport but to the MRT station. Yoshi is pretty damn good roaming around Manila already. He rode the MRT from Quezon Avenue to Taft and rode short taxi to Terminal 2. So i told myself, i think i did a very good job familiarizing Yoshi with the city.

He only had about a few hundred pesos in his wallet. Yet, he still managed to save some for souvenir coins. Good job, my friend.

I went back to my room and opened again my book. As i was reading it, NHK was on cable showing the benefits of having a good spacious kitchen. He commented this network doesn't have good ratings in Japan. It's very serious, he said. I leafed through the different pages of Japan. Capital City Tokyo. When will i be able to go there, i asked myself? Hmmm... that i am very much looking forward to doing.

I remembered Yoshi borrowing my pen and saying he is going to write something. Before he left he taught me a little 101 on Nihoŋɡo. I remember some, but half of which i am still trying to dig deep in my brain how i was able to speak it with him then and now. My bad. He gave me a piece of paper with the Japanese alphabet and i thought this is one of the best gifts I've ever received in my life. As soon as he left, i was back to speaking broken Japanese words most of which i think are wrong and admiring the majesty of Mt. Fuji.

If there's one thing i sincerely learned from Yoshi is his humility. With all of us, and i mean i think everyone can agree, Japan is on the top lists of must travel destinations in the world. Who wouldn't want to stay in high tech hotels, dress like fashion forward street stylists and just walk around the top country of Asia? This man lives there, right in the epicenter of the future of technology. Yet, i've never seen Yoshi more happy and alive as when he was here in Manila, in a third world country, in seemingly chaotic city like Manila. When he sat in the couch with his arms folded to the back of his head on that hot sunny day day that he was leaving, i already knew this man would come back to the Philippines. For sure.

In one of our talks, i told him how it is to live in the Philippines, money yes can buy you all the luxuries in the world but here money is just part of a circle as the world turns. We have problems, most of which are about trying to still live till the next day apart from the crucial life and death matters of the Filipino mass, but still we laugh about it. We fuckin' laugh our problems off. Heck, we're one of the happiest people in the world.

He asked me when am i going to Japan???

I answered I don't think i can anytime soon. I don't have money. And i started laughing.

Trekking Above the Clouds in Negros Oriental, Philippines

I often wonder what it is like to be up there. You know, when you look up from the bottom, all you could see are vast empty spaces of nothingness. All you could see are green patches of the unknown. And all you could ask yourself is when will you be there?

I have a confession to make. I am not a fan of wild adventures in the mountains. As much as i would want to consider the activity, i often find myself choosing more to sit by the coconut tree and swim in azure waters than to torture myself from trekking. I am one lazy traveler, i know. And I live for the ocean.

If you would read my stories of the places i have visited, whether it is in the Philippines like Guimaras, Antique, Cebu or Bohol or around Asia like Thailand and Cambodia, it's mostly about beaches. I never knew my concept of an awesome adventure would change when i went to Negros Oriental.

Trips going to the mountains aren't always 100% safe. There's a risk of high-altitude sickness or if you're unlucky - falling debris from soft rocks, landslides and of course, manual error from your driver/guide as you rip those improbable roads. Before, i always ask myself why would people risk their lives for a few hours up there? Maybe, it's all part of the adventure making the trip to the top so much sweeter. Maybe.

I love to commune with my surroundings but i guess it's a totally different experience when you're up there, up above the mountains. As i look back at my trip to Negros, I discovered I was actually cruising most of the time, at about 1000 meters above sea level. I couldn't imagine myself up there, on a motorbike. Others have conquered the best of heights. I actually got inspired by a story from a fellow travel blogger, Claire of Lakwatsera De Primera with her story about Mt.Guiting-Guiting in Romblon, plus another travel blogger/colleague of mine, Patti of Life's My Trip who's just finished a trek at the Taroko gorge in Taiwan. These two are just some of the many amazing people who live to share their experiences. These brave and courageous travelers continue to fuel my passion for traveling, and at greater heights.

This trip in Negros Oriental was an incredible experience that i live to remember forever. With ears popping and cold mist of the wind touching my skin, i will definitely do it again in a heartbeat.

My fondest memory of Negros was when i stopped by at this very spot. As the engine of the motorbike stopped, the hypnotic sounds of nature became more familiar to my ears. The water from the falls. The flock of birds chirping. The soft sound of the wind from the east. I imagined what would it be like if i live here. I thought of sleeping to the lullaby of the angry howls of the mountain winds, and waking up to the warm rays of the eastern sun. It seemed perfect for me, one i never knew i always wanted. I watched as the little kids play amidst it's killer cliffs to the side, and old men sitting by the dilapidated bench a few steps away from falling down the ravine. I signed my guide to wait a little while, I was having such a grand time. This is unlike anything I've ever experienced.

Sometimes, i think about what if i give myself a month to live in the mountains. How will i change? What will my life be? Would i still be fascinated with the ocean, or shall i opt to live together near the clouds?

The irony of it all is whether you're down in the shore or on top of the ridge, your imagination runs free in circles. You start to wander in spectacle. And you end up hoping in the end. You imagine yourself there, curious and eager for realizations to unfold .

"I was high above the mountains and all i could think of is what's waiting for me down there... will always be there... just waiting for me."

Traveling to Boac in Marindue, Philippines During the Moriones Festival

You will not travel far from Gasan to Boac, but this short distance will lead you to big differences in terms of its surroundings. Boac is so much different from the former. The streets are wider, the nightlife is... well, uhm, there's a nightlife. There's an internet shop and high sugar orange drinks by the cup and what have you. For a city boy or a city girl, Boac is your place to go to in Marinduque.

But amidst its modernism, Boac, a first class municipality, is still equipped with the Authentic "Old" local flavor. Imagine, the houses are still standing after about a hundred years and well nothing much changed in terms of the people.

You will be surprised that Boac can accommodate any traveler with any kind of budget. There's bigwigs like Boac Hotel and there's little alleys where you can find spartan rooms - cheap accommodations like pension houses and lodging houses. Restaurants are aplenty in the main streets and choices are varied from the local cuisine to baked macaroni which is really good. No Joke!

Our national Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal in front of the town plaza. It's also the hub of Boac Tourism as the office is here. For travelers roaming around Boac and are lost, find Jose Rizal and from there you can ask, not from him of course, but from the many gentlemen who will assist you of your itinerary.

Chipped off but proud, Dr. Jose Rizal stands still in remembrance of how a Filipino once was regarded a HERO. If there's any province i think that's more Filipino, it has to be here in Marinduque.

Now, it's time to chase the Morions!

Since the parade of the Morions didn't go exactly with my schedule because i was at the beach or i was riding the tricycle, i knew i needed to see for myself up close and personal the Morions so i chased the last remaining costume wearers along the streets of Boac. The story is they were out visiting shops, houses, restaurants like this "caroling" asking for donations.

The Moriones Festival is known widely as one of the most colorful festivals celebrated on the island of Marinduque and the Philippines. Morion means "mask" or "visor," a part of the medieval Roman armor which covers the face. Moriones, on the other hand, refers to the masked and costumed penitents who march around the town for seven days searching for Longinus. Morions roam the streets in town from Holy Monday to Easter Sunday scaring the kids, or engaging in antics or surprises to draw attention. This is a folk-religious festival that re-enacts the story of Saint Longinus, a Roman centurion who was blind in one eye. The festival is characterized by colorful Roman costumes, painted masks and helmets, and brightly-colored tunics. The towns of Boac, Gasan, Santa Cruz, Buenavista and Mogpog in the island of Marinduque become one gigantic stage. The observances form part of the Lenten celebrations of Marinduque. The various towns also hold the unique tradition of the pabasa or the recitation of Christ's passion in verse.^[2] Then at three o'clock on Good Friday afternoon, the Santo Sepulcro is observed, whereby old women exchange verses based on the Bible as they stand in wake of the dead Christ. One of the highlights of this festival is the Via Crucis. A re-enactment of the suffering of Christ on his way to the calvary. Men inflict suffering upon themselves by whipping their backs, carrying a wooden cross and sometimes even crucifixion. They see this act as their form of atonement for their sins. This weeklong celebration starts on Holy Monday and ends on Easter Sunday. ^[3]

Of course, how can i not end the day in Beautiful Boac without ordering a bottle of ice cold beer. This is one of the many little spots littered on the back streets/alleys of Boac. Surprisingly, there's a crowd of many men and women (mostly Mrinduque born manila based) who drink till the wee hours of the morning and who order grilled food.

I stayed until 5AM. Although this particular stop wasn't exactly pure fun because of some things i would like to forget, i would like to disregard all bad vibes from this trip and focus on the wonders it brought me. Boac is a place i will never forget, true, but its also the place where i will certainly remember because i learned. "You cannot really judge the book by its cover." The people of Boac are warm-hearted. And since i'm not from Marinduque, i would like to be one!

13 Recommended Activities for your Japanese Friend Visiting Manila in the Philippines

This is a very late post but nonetheless a very memorable one. Rewind to July 2009, i met a Japanese traveler in Saigon, Vietnam when i was backpacking there. He was traveling in Saigon for three days and two nights. Flew in straight from Tokyo and back. Wow. Whattafasttraveler!!! We met in one of the Mekong River boat rides. After which, i tagged him with us wandering around the city the next few days. Grabbing dinner, getting lost in the lingeries street of Ho Chih Minh City and losing in translation ordering fried spring rolls and Saigon beer - a very very funny incident. I need to meet up with you to tell the actual story.

A few months later, we got in touch and he told me he was coming to the Philippines. Before i left for Thailand in February he said he is booked and flying to Manila a few days after i arrive from my own backpacking trip. Heck, this was fun. It will feel like i never stopped traveling at all. So here comes Yoshi, my Japanese friend getting lost in the middle of Terminal 2 where international flights arriving in the Philippines are located. If you have a Japanese friend coming over, try to assist them because English is quite a problem with them. Good thing my buddy went to the US for a while just to study conversational English. Me and my friend were waiting for him for close to an hour and a half and still no sign of him. People around know what time JAL flights arrive in Manila so basically, it's either we lost him and he's left already or he didn't make the flight. Of course he did. He just got lost. Getting out on the second floor where the expensive taxis are.

T'was a long time last seeing each other but nothing has changed. We're still same old, same old funny and random people. Yoshi is the kind of guy you know you're rest assured he's not gonna bring you trouble. Little background, my good friend works in the weather station in Tokyo. So it's safe to say he's the Japanese version of Kuya Kim.

We got him a loft type bedroom near my home in Quezon City so it's easier to hang out for us. Also, in case he needs anything, we're fifteen minutes away from him. Dropped his bags. Exchanged gifts and we're off to drink. He is only traveling in the Philippines for about four days. Two days and one night will be spent in Banaue studying the crops and agriculture. His thing. So that leaves little amount of time exploring Manila. The night is young! Off we go!

For those who have foreigner friends visiting Manila, read the following itinerary on traveling around Manila for one whole day. It just took my Japanese friend one day of hanging out with a mad man like me, and in the end he was getting more and more Filipino.

Step 1. The National Sport of the Filipinos is "Gulp"!

So we grabbed a few beers in a favorite bar of mine - where you don't have to get really dressed up to get in, where you don't have to pay P120 (almost $3) for a beer and where you can laugh as loud as you can. The name of the place is 77. I introduced Yoshi to my best friend for life (BFF) San Miguel!

Step 2. Introduce Filipino Food Little by Little

You know what most people say about Filipino food. Weird. Whatever. So we were looking at the menu what to eat. He wanted to eat pizza. Why not Longganisa (Chinese sausage) Pizza? It was great! Mix of West and Filipino. Good choice.

Left the place around 4AM. Whattanight. The next day my friend MM and Yoshi met up and went around Manila while i was still having a really good sleep.

Step 3: Filipino Time (Don't Know if This is a Good Tip)

Got up by noon and immediately set off to meet up with Yoshi at Manila Ocean Park. I am not a big commuter but apparently i was eager to try the hard way going here. MRT, jeepney, taxi when i got there, it felt like i didn't shower at all. But that's another story. I was three hours late. Sorry. Hello Manila Bay!!! Nice to see you again!!!

Step 4: Manila Sunset

When you're in Manila Ocean Park, don't forget to check out White Moon and order a bottle of beer while checking out the gorgeous bay. They say sunsets are killer around the spot here.

Step 5: Introduce Local Transportation

The National Car of the Philippines - the famous Sarao Jeepney. Read the history of the Jeepney below to find out how Jeepneys were invented with so much craftsmanship and genius.

There's no better souvenir for my Japanese friend than a photo of him riding some pimpin' jeepney! Which i tried also... haha

Step 6: Cool Off

If you still didn't know, it's scorching hot in Manila. And what better way to cool off than to order everyone's childhood love,"dirty ice cream". Unfortunately there's none being sold at the park. Although a good substitute is eating the "Halo-Halo", a Filipino dessert made up of milk with crushed ice, coconut, beans, and assorted fruits. We had that in Chowking,a local Chinese fast food, a few hours after.

While Yoshi was getting more Filipino by the hour. We were enjoying Japan's gift to the world. Arcade and Video Games, of course. It's surreal that he was translating everything to us. And this particular text below is not right.

Step 7: Filipinos are Big on Spas

While walking around the Ocean Park, we noticed many people around one miniscule pool. Well, it is the Fish Spa. A growing trend around here in Manila. Where people can dump their feet on the pool and let the fish scrub out dead skin cells. WTF. Just went for a look, i don't really recommend it. Just not interesting to me. But it might be fun to some.

Meanwhile to the right of Spa... we spotted some angry creatures... Hey, Jaws 1 and 2!

Step 8: Make a fool of yourselves.

We Filipinos are one of the happiest people on earth because we don't take ourselves seriously. We love life. We love to laugh. We live to enjoy life. What better way to show Yoshi that attitude than posing in front of a photo booth looking like clowns. FOR FREE!

After the shots were taken. We were all laughing so hard at what we just did. Gave the copy to Yoshi. Good souvenir of the fun times in the Philippines and will make a very nice display in his office too.

Step 9: Attack the Mall

If you're a Filipino and not doing anything for the day, there's a 80% chance you're headed to the mall. Right? Right! Some even go to the mall everyday: to eat, to watch a movie, to hang out, to shop, to have a haircut, etc. This is Mall of Asia, not the biggest mall in the Philippines - only second to SM North Edsa and one of the biggest in the world.

This was the view from inside the mall. WOW!

Step 10: Beautiful Girls Hands down!!!

The Globe of "Mall of Asia". The whole time we were there, i was just singing... Mall of Asia... Truly Asia!

Step 11: The Best Place to Go to in Manila is the Baywalk

It is the home to one of the world's most famous sunsets, home to where families gather, lovers express their love and poets like me love to write. The viewing deck to dying sun.

Looks like Yoshi is slowly becoming more at home in Manila. What's nice around Mall of Asia complex and around is that it's slowly now becoming more open to advertising tourism.

I know my Japanese friend really enjoyed his visit in Manila Bay, just wandering around the huge complex, he could see the sights and different colors and he could feel the energy and warmth of the people. This is Manila. I am very proud and happy to be touring him around a city i fuckin' love.

Step 13: Chat up and drink some more

We Filipinos love talking. Conversations last from an hour to a day. So we took Yoshi to one of the last remaining oldie bars/restaurants in Malate and ordered Sisig (don't ask me about its English translation, better left unknown), buttered chicken, garlic rice and three buckets of San Miguel. And started chatting up till the wee hours.

It was fun hanging out with Yoshi here in Manila. He's my first Japanese traveler friend. Wandering around Manila with him felt like i was traveling, too. And as much as i wanted to go with him to Banaue because i haven't been there, i was a good son and obeyed my parents. I think he understood. That's the way it goes around here in the Philippines. Family is important to us Filipinos. And whatever decision we make, we always consult our family.

So off we go to drive Yoshi to the bus station bound for Banaue. When we got to the station, we saw a few passengers seated already, most of them foreigners like him eager to discover the 8th Wonder of the World.

Armed with one whole day of experiencing the Philippines, i bet he has enough confidence to rule Northern Luzon. Cheers!

Falling in Love with the City of Gentle People Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental, Philippines

ALL-TIME FAVORITE POST FROM 2011 RE-BLOGGED: Dumaguete, the capital of Negros Oriental is a beautiful city to travel to. It's one of the most scenic provinces i have been to in Visayas and one of the most relaxing, too. I would often recall passing by the streets and admiring how simple life is there. It's not as commercialized as Cebu, though it's not as quaint as Guimaras or Siquijor. It's just right. There are a lot of expats who consider dumag-we'te their home, and i couldn't agree with their decision more. I would want to live here ttoo, to be honest.

Apart from its rich history and culture, the most i can remember about Dumaguete are its people. I often walk around and observe the charming locals and their seemingly infinite smiles. Sometimes, i would just sit and look around. These images were already enough to make me smile.

Walking along Rizal boulevard anytime of the day, you would feel the intense passion and love overflowing. There's just too much love in the air and it's inspiring everyone. It will touch your core without even knowing it. It seems Roxas boulevard has some competition over there. If you read this blog, you know about my fascination for couples sitting by the bay and how i love to document couples whether it is in Manila or Phnom Penh. Them holding hands and expressing their devotion for one another.

The people of Dumaguete are warm, accommodating and friendly. They are down to earth and respectful. They value the simplest things and they are open to sharing their life even with non-locals. They don't see the facade but they get to know the real you, your heart and soul. They are good friends too.

I don't know any better way to describe the city than to tell you the story of my driver/guide/friend. In my opinion, he surely symbolizes what the city is all about, and what it represents.

Alex is about the same age as mine - late 20's and has been working really, really hard everyday to earn for his family. He is a father of three adorable kids, one of which is sickly. His wife works for a resort/guest house as a waitress. Through the days that he's been there to drive me through the highs and lows of Negros, I've come to know an awesome man. I surely learned a lot of lessons from him, those of which i carry with me now as i write this.

He loves to share his childhood story, of how he loves the ocean and how he and his friends would often set to the sea to fish. He free-dives a lot and at one time, he almost lost his life. He would often tell me to hit the beach whenever i feel unwell. For him, the ocean is the best remedy to any illness. As he grows older, he started seeking for greener pasture, taking odd jobs like bar tending in Sumilon Island, instructing foreigners to dive in Panglao Island and even working as a household help in Dumaguete. One thing i noticed about Alex is that he is proud of his accomplishments. He asked me what i do for a living, and of course i mentioned a career unfamiliar to his ears. Never did he feel inferior of his job.

He saved up big bucks for his family. Living in Dumaguete, you don't need millions. Life in the gentle city is simple and cheap. Now, he's been able to provide comfortable living for his kids and a lovely wife. Early last year, he was able to buy his own tricycle. He would also talk about his usual customers, those Japanese living in Siquijor. They would often call up Alex to drive them around town buying supplies to take home with them. On one of our talks over SMB in Rizal boulevard, he told me how proud he is of the province. He lives in a small town called Bacong. Everyday he would take turns with his wife in picking up their little one in school. He is proud to add that his greatest achievement is providing his kids with good education. It was about an hour before midnight when his daughter texted him asking him when is he coming home. His family is that close, and he would often bring home something to his daughter whenever he comes home late at night. That is the only time, little daughter can sleep.

He would often ask me about my life in Manila but i would often cut my answer short. I often tell him, life in Negros is simple and pleasant. Life in Manila is comfortable but busy. I told him how time always seems short in the bustling capital of the Philippines. One day, coming back from Valencia, he wanted me to meet his niece, a child of a Spanish mestizo and a local from Negros. Alex would often worry about his niece's safety. The girl is lovely and just like any other place in the world, she catches so much attention. He is proud of her and that she studies in a international school.

Alex wanted me to see all the sights in Negros but time is running out. He initially wanted to take me far out of town but i needed to fly back to Manila. I had to give it to the guy for driving me all the way to the mountains and spur of the moment trips to little barangays and magnificent cliffs, and for being patient to stop every so often so i could mingle with the people and take decent photos. He always gives a shy face whenever i ask him how much he will charge me for the trip. Never did he put a price.

Before i left Negros Oriental, we chatted for a bit outside the airport over a few bottles of SMB. It was such a good time to spend my last hours in the province. In all of the time that i get to chat at Alex, i could sense his sincerity and honesty.

Looking back now, i come to realize how Alex symbolizes so much the province. He is a man of great dignity and respect. He values family, friendships and God. He is a man who lives for the present and future. Just like the province, he's cautious of the future too. His love for life and the simple things are admirable. He is vulnerable but knows his way around. He's equipped with the values that seems enviable; God-fearing, honest and gentle. And that i think is what makes him and the city so damn special.

The Little Island Cove at Tres Reyes Island in Marinduque, Philippines

About thirty minutes from Katala Beach Resort, you'll get to Gaspar in Tres Reyes Islands. And about fifteen minutes from Gaspar Island, you'll reach P-A-R-A-D-I-S-E. I have done my research of Marinduque before i left fo this trip. But i wasn't informed of the undeniable beauty of Marinduque's little islets and coves. I was surprised that it was that beautiful. I was astounded as hell. I was floored.

From Gaspar island, you'll pass by huge limestone cliffs and huge boulders of rocks that protect the crown from the harsh seas. The boatman tried to point out one islet but sadly there was a group of sun-kissed animals like me lounging there so he said we'll go to another islet. See the glory of island hopping in Marinduque is you can still find an islet or cove all to yourself. We turned back and off we go to the quiet islet within a cove. The boat docked and this is what i saw.

I am a writer but i just couldn't anymore find the words to describe this place. I was just smiling. I wasn't in tears because how can i. It's literally just so beautiful to begin with.

MARINDUQUE is Beautiful...

God loves the Philippines so much!

No wonder a few foreign tourists never left the island province and decided to stay for good here. Now, they are the proud owners of most beach resorts and restaurants in Marinduque. I couldn't complain a bit because they've given my fellowmen work which is always good. From the friendly German guy i met, he said not more than ten foreigners call Gasan their home.

What must be like the scene from the Blue Lagoon is the very same islet i chilled in when i was in Marinduque.

I couldn't contain my emotions, really. Happiness. Feat. High spirits.

I sat like i always do and found a shade under a rock. Gee, thankful i went here. I could write so much here. Poetry, Music, Arts. But i want to leave the island untouched.

Life's a beach and it is definitely good in the Philippines!!!

There were some fisherman who passed by and shared the little cove with me. It was lunch time and they needed a break from all the fishing. Stopped by the island. Grilled fish. Played Chess and drank rhum. Oh, whattalife for them.

The tricky part with Marinduque is that just when you thought you've been to or seen the best, chances are you have been only to the second best. Get me. It's like this - almost everywhere i've been to in Marinduque, it's always astounding but i knew i couldn't afford to miss out what the rest of Marinduque has to offer. And i am proud that my instincts were right.

Like all Real travelers around the world, we don't stop at seeing one beautiful place.

I was off to Boac, Sta. Cruz and Torrijos next. Day by day, Marinduque surprises me with its wonders.

Travel Diary: The Last Minute Trip to Bohol in the Philippines with French People

This trip wasn't planned. I have been day dreaming and night dreaming of my South East Asian trip when i was asked if i wanted to join some new friends of mine. I thought, why not. As they say, never refuse an invitation.

But the case was different this time around. There will be four of us traveling and i'm the only Filipino. These French people were going on a trip. I was suppose to go to Bohol alone, a week before because nobody wanted to join me. So when they asked if i wanted to go to Bohol, i said yes right away.

I met up with them two days before the scheduled flight to pay for our plane ticket going to Tagbilaran in Bohol. I've been to some of the island provinces in Visayas, namely Aklan, Ilo-Ilo, Antique, Guimaras but i found Bohol quite different. I was expecting more: quiet town, calm waters, very friendly locals, white sand beaches and mesmerizing marine life. Bohol showed me there's more to discover than expect just the average Bohol. This province is captivating. No wonder, i've fallen in love with the province all over again. We flew via Philippine Airlines. The fare was pretty reasonable as compared to the low cost airline - Cebu Pacific. The seats were better, more comfortable and the flight schedules were better. We left Manila first flight at around 5AM and flew from Tagbilaran after 4 days at around 5PM. We pretty much used up our 4 days stay. When we arrived, we negotiated for a van that would take us to Panglao Island. After a few minutes we were dropped of at the back of the beach. A few walks up, we already saw the shore. The shore wasn't that big, maybe it's because of the high tide, but this is what i'm talking about. The air is different and the sea is just crazily beautiful.

We stayed at Bohol Divers Resort - the cheapest we've scouted amongst the beach front resorts. But it was a plain, small fan room. It has no television and the bathroom is only defined by the blue hawaiian print curtains. But i guess it was okay since it gets pretty cold at night and most of the time we go back to the room we're already pretty drunk anyway.

We availed of a tour package. i know, touristy right? But we wanted to get a great deal (sharing the cost among four people was practical) and see as many places in one morning. We rode a car, and it was cheaper than getting a van. The road trip to Carmen, the town of Chocolate Hills was pretty scary. Imagine winding roads, high edged cliffs, massive mountains with tall trees enclosing the road to get there.

Honestly, they didn't enjoy Chocolate Hills because it took us a long time to go there and the weather wasn't cooperating. But the picture will say it all, how amazing the hills were. They're actually almost equally distant from each other. You might think twice believing this wasn't man made. It's gorgeous. But as we climbed the stairs going to the top, the rains started pouring. Whatever. We still got there and took pictures of us jumping instead of holding a broom stick all the way to your crotch.

Gulping liters of water, we went to Loboc Hanging Bridge where we have to cross a poorly built bridge made out of bamboo sticks. I wouldn't be surprised if in a few weeks it'll fall. There was a part on the bridge, where i could already swear seeing my foot down.

Then it was time for the Loboc River Cruise. It was great to go upstream. But i think the next time i will go there will be when i'm with someone special. You enjoy the breeze and ride to the river with a girlfriend, not with loud buddies. This same place, you could see the tiny tarsier. My French friends were playing with it. But it was too small for me, too fragile. And at that time, their huge eyes were almost closing, almost falling asleep. I guess the tarsiers, small monkies are having a siesta.

We went to Baclayon church but since we were all tired and wanted to go to the beach already, we went back to the car because it was pretty boring.

Alona Beach was the perfect choice for us because we didn't wanna be bored with the same location, same people, same food every single day. We needed to explore, find something to do and do things we've never done before. Alona Beach has that. If you walk down south, the sand there is softer - almost like Boracay fine white sands. The water is clear but it had a lot of plants. But it was still okay for us. There were numerous restaurants and bars lined up if you want to grab something to eat, like a clubhouse sandwich for me. Some bars serve average priced beers and cocktails. But it wasn't cheap. I guess their prices are for westerners. My friends loved table soccer. The French loves football so much. I tried to play it, but they were pretty intense with the game. They want to beat the hell out of their opponents. I just wanted to grab a beer and enjoy happy hour.

Note: Bohol bars don't follow the happy hour-50% off on drinks.

You can just go to a dive center anywhere and ask for their special price for diving and snorkeling. They wanted to go diving as they had their first one in White Beach in Puerto Galera. I just wanted to snorkel. The pictures you see of the underwater world of Bohol is superb. Pure majesty! Probably the best thing Bohol has to offer to her tourists is its amazing underwater world. The boat ride to Balicasag Island was pretty sleepy, but on our way back was a different thing, probably the roughest boat ride I've ever ridden. But the truth is, i enjoyed it a lot. I feel pretty safe. And Spanish men who were also on the same boat were singing "Ole, Ole, Ole!!!". That made me smile, and forget less about the possibility of a sinking ship. Just negotiate the price for the boat ride and snorkeling gears. I think the price i paid was pretty cheap. We went to Balicasag Island twice.

I know a lot of people say that Bohol is a sleepy town. It is! But it's how you party that's different. Everyday, i'd go to the bar and have a San Mig Light. I talked with the very friendly waitresses. They're lovely and charming. They smile a lot and joke a lot. As i order my beer and down it after a few minutes, my Marlboro Lights lit up, they would talk to you. I've lost count how many Camparis and Rhum shots i was given for free by them. My French friends were asking me if it's okay to drink the shots. I told them, we're lucky boys. The waitresses liked us. We're a pretty young group as compared to most European farangs who're family men leaving their wives and children back at home to get a score and taste of Filipina women.

We went to a 24-hour bar, as Jinky would like to call it. I was telling her we would go with you wherever you will go. It's our last night in Bohol and we wanna have fun. We want it memorable. So off we go, me with an average of 8 beers that night, we walked towards the city to the bar. We're like love teams in Filipino movies. One tourist, one local girl. And as my French friend says - "Too much competition!" Because our competition now were the Australian boys and that California dude who strutted to Michael Jackson and gave a head stand up that would kill any street boy stunt.

I guess Pinoys are still the best. We, Pinoys, know how to make a move on a girl. We know how to make them laugh in a good way. We know how to dance accordingly. We are gentle and charming, and we know when to say what. Well, i took care of my French friends. I told them, i'm a tourist in here as well but i'm a Filipino. "I promise you guys will have the best time in Bohol." And i think, they did. So my girl Strawberry (Don't judge me, this was in 2008) and i was ahead of the pack. And Mona and the California dude were dancing reggaeton. Strawberry was with me. But she is "Kapuy na!" that is the only Boholano word i know - meaning she is tired.

We left the bar at almost 6AM. The sun was already rising. We couldn't anymore think and see clearly. But i told them an American phrase if you want to urinate. "I will take a leak"... I took a leak at the beach, when all of a sudden we saw Korean tourists going for the dolphin watching already and some ladies preparing for their fish selling. So embarassing!

P.S. More stories to come when i think about them. Fuck, i think i got the hang of speaking this way. Easy english because of my friends so they could understand me more. But i think this way, i speak more universal, don't you think?

Travel Diary: Exploring the Capital of the Queen City of the South - Cebu, Philippines

Walking in Cebu is hectic. Hectic in a sense that there's so much to see, and with so little time, everything becomes too overwhelming. Cebu city is located in the eastern coast of mainland Cebu in Southern Philippines. With a rich Spanish influence and a laid back charm of province life, Cebu is a prime choice for tropical living in the country. Dubbed as the commercial hot spot of the south, boasting an international airport, progressive trade and industry business and scenery that will fickle all the senses.

The trip to Cebu was planned, months actually before the flight. I mean, I've been around Guimaras and Antique but i haven't been to Cebu. It's about time! I wanted to go to this island north of the province (watch out for this post) and it's inevitable that i make a quick stop to the city first.

Lonely Planet says i had to walk about five hundred meters from the Arrival doors of Cebu International Airport. I got myself a taxi which i paid for about P350 or roughly $7, very expensive i know. Immediately, i got myself my first chat with a local. With relatively no Cebuano blood and having no knowledge of Bisaya, surprisingly, it was a good conversation.

The taxi driver asked me if i was from Manila. I said yes. He asked me if i was a movie star? Huh? It must be the sunglasses and the three page white bond paper i was holding (It's part of work). He must be thinking i was in Cebu for a shoot.

I love this province already. Hellsyeah!

Cebu city was scorching hot when i was arrived. I felt every drop of perspiration. It was hot, humid and polluted. I didn't care. I actually wanted to ride public transportation but i think it was impractical, and i was running late.

For about few days in the city, i found myself wandering around and finding myself at the end of the road. I walked some more and it was dead end. I walked around Osmena Boulevard and the outskirts, and i found myself staring at a dilapidated building. How could this be? Where's that Cebu charm everyone's raving about. Maybe, i was in a totally different place? Or maybe i am just clueless!

Cebu City is comparable to Manila but i didn't want to compare the two because each city has its own charm. Manila is like a man. Cebu City is like a woman. Men are from Mars, women are from Venus. Totally different!

Cebu city boasts of high rise building and super malls. There's tons where to waste your money. Progression is part of the city's growth. With thousands of businessmen flying to the city day and night everyday, for the rest of the year, it's right about time Cebu city keeps up.

As a traveler, i found myself sometimes sitting in some unknown sari-sari store and ordering a bottle of "Coke sakto", as i puff a smoke, i looked around and slowly see the real charm of the city. I gaze upon the locals while i was riding the jeepneys transfering to and from, with number signs i couldn't understand and the sweltering midday sun spiking up. Imagine.

With absolutely nowhere to go and with enough time to wander some more, my days were spent cruising through the streets at the back of a motorcycle. Being the loner that i am, i go eat alone at one of the food courts in the largest mall in Cebu and just taking it all in.

If you're single guy and foreign looking, chances are you will find the city a disneyland of beautiful people. Gorgeous and tanned - Cebuanas strutting along the boulevard like a runway model. You will know where to go when you want to, what you were thinking.

Indeed, i came here searching to find answers why everyone's raving about Cebu, instead i got myself asking so many questions. I couldn't tell if i liked it or i hated it. The hell you might care what i maybe thinking, right?

And i have no regrets visiting the city, at least it's a place new to me.
