Favorite BlackBerry Storm Apps

I've had my BlackBerry Storm now since early December. I can say I am quite happy with it. Over the last few weeks I have found some apps that are free and great to use.

GMail Mobile [ OTA Download ]
The mobile gmail app is great. Works flawless.
TwitterBerry [ OTA Download ]
BlackBerry + Twitter = Fantastic. This app is at the top of my list. It is lighweight and full of features. It also has twitpic support.
YouTube [ OTA Download ]
Great for killing time! The app is real clean and makes it very easy to watch and search YouTube videos.
FaceBook [ OTA Download ]
Not much in the way of features, but the basics are there. I also like the ability to post photos directly to facebook. Comes in handy.
Viigo [ OTA Download ]
RSS, Sports Scores, Weather and much more! This is a must download.
Google Maps [ OTA Download ]
Not much needs to be said about this one. The only feature missing is the ability to use the built-in GPS for turn-by-turn directions.

How To Search Twitter with FireFox

I did a quick search for different Twitter FireFox add-ons. Initially I was looking for a slick way to search Twitter. I didn't find a great selection, then I remembered that you can add custom searches to FireFox. Here's what I did:

Go to http://search.twitter.com
Click the dropdown menu next to the upper right search box
Click "Add Twitter Search"
Thats it!

Now, I took it one step further and added a keyword shortcut for the search. I used the keyword "t". You can find this by selecting "Manage Search Engines" then click "edit keyword". With this, you can now just type "t jerryjr" in the address bar and you will be on your way to quickly searching twitter.

I've had my Sharp LCD TV for over a year now and I never really thought about a more intense calibration. After seeing a TV that has been professionally calibrated, I'm starting to think that I should invest in that myself.

I did a bit of research and found that there is a Blu-Ray DVD which may help me to it on my own. It's called Digital Video Essentials and is just $16.99 at Amazon.com. I will be ordering mine shortly and will have a follow up post about how well it worked.

Happy Thanksgiving and stuff(ing)

Happy thanksgiving and stuff(ing). For those of you not in the US.. Happy Thursday! Those not in the US, I must tell you, boy, you're really missing out!

I'm writing this on my 45min journey to my parents place. My wife and I were reluctant to leave our puppy at home but decided it should be ok. He recently had a bout with parvo and so far its looking great. I can add that to the 'what I'm thankful for' list.

I also realized that I have not attempted to post via my blackberry after the upgrade to drupal 6 and my new template. I guess if anyone is reading this, then it worked! (I'm keeping my fingers crossed)

So here are a few things we (my wife and I) are thankful for:

- having great jobs, especially in todays economy
- our first house

World... Meet Luke the Boxer

Shortly after we got married. We decided to get a dog. After weeks of searching, we finally found boxer puppies in our area.

Luke was just 7 weeks old when we picked him up. In just 3 weeks he went from 7lbs to 14lbs and has turned into a lean mean biting machine.

Just for the record, I wanted to name him Drupal or Linux.... evidently I didn't win.

Taxonomy Error after Drupal 5 to 6 Upgrade

In my previous post regarding my Drupal 5 to Drupal 6 upgrade I stated that the upgrade went smooth. Well, unfortunately that was not 100% correct. After making a second post, I noticed an odd error occurring with the taxonomy entries:

Duplicate entry '0' for key 1 query: INSERT INTO term_data (vid, name, description, weight)

After a bit of searching, I wasn't able to easily fix the issue. However, after comparing the term_data table with a clean drupal 6 install I noticed that the 'tid' field was not set to auto_increment. I then changed that field to auto_increment and edited my last post. And the result.... it worked!

It appears there was a small glitch on my upgrade. Not 100% sure if it was something on my end or a bug on Drupal's end (most likely not). I hope this post will help anyone who runs accross the same issue.

Mobile Web Surfing - iPhone, BlackBerry, Etc

Almost everyone I know has a phone allowing mobile web surfing. One of my best friends, Justin, just picked up an iPhone. To be honest, I have never actually touched or played with the iPhone before now. Sitting at dinner, Justin and I pulled up my Flickr account to check out some photos of my new Boxer puppy.

Now, I can honestly say I'm not a huge Mac fan (don't flame me yet!), the only Apple product I have is an iPod. But, the iPhone is pretty slick! However, I still won't pickup the iPhone for myself since it is still limited to AT&T. I've been with Verizon now for about 4 years and have been happy ever since.

At the moment I currently carry 2 BlackBerry Curves (don't ask). The BlackBerry Curve is a pretty solid phone. Before the Curve I was a lucky owner of the Motorola Q (terrible), so the Curve was a major positive change. For the last few months I have been following the news and release info for the BlackBerry Storm. I'm really curious as to how that phone will perform. Unfortunately, I'm only 6 months into my 2 year contract at the moment... but then again it will only be $250 to cancel the contract.

So, why am I rambling about these phones?? Well the meaning of all this madness is the realization that many consumers are moving (quickly) to web enabled phones. This means that anyone who develops websites, online systems and intranets need to be actively thinking about how to build their project "mobile friendly".
