Michelle and Jose joined me on a rather windy evening. Ok, it was quite windy. So windy, at one point my chair blew over. This spring has been so windy, it’s almost unbelievable!! Well, Michelle and Jose were good sports and put up with all my requests. Walking half a mile while 36 wks pregnant… wardrobe changes… pose here, pose there…. and my favorite: the “Wait! One more!” after I’ve already put my camera away. Occasionally, ok maybe 50% of the time, I will see/think of one more shot, but I’ve already said “we’re done” and packed away my camera. A few times, in my early days, I have brushed the thought aside and gone on home, only to wish I had taken that last shot, because I knew it was perfect and I was missing out on one of the best shots of the session. Now, I’ve learned and if I ever get that Wait! One more! feeling, I absolutely listen to it and do it! Otherwise, I go home to regret it.

Anyways, on to Michelle and Jose. I quite like how the wind adds a soft playful and romantic feel as it blows Michelle’s hair. These two are expecting their first baby and the gender is a surprise! Yay! So fun! I can’t wait to see the little cutie that will fill those tiny shoes. Stay tuned for a newborn session in a few weeks.

Parenthood

I’ve known Brian & Susan for a few years now, from before the oldest was born. They were 19 or so when they ran off to the courthouse and eloped. I asked them during this session, Did you ever imagine THIS was what you would be doing a few years later? “This” as is, raising the two boisterous older kiddos and the surprise twins (the pregnancy was planned, the fact that it was twins was a surprise). The answer was a laugh and a resounding no!

Being a parent definitely has its ups and downs, its crazy moments and its sweet moments. No matter how hard it is, it is worth it. It is a special opportunity to be a parent.

You know, my one wish is that my photos help you strengthen your relationships. If I photograph your family, I hope those images help you fell more love for your family. If I photograph a single individual (i.e. senior portrait), I hope those images help boost your self-confidence and help you realize your individual worth. I love these first three photos that I am posted, specifically this very first one. I hope that this Mom and Daughter can look at themselves laughing and having a good time and that this will be a favorite, cherished photo for the rest of their lives. I just love the expressions and I feel it with all my heart! Ok, I know part of what they are laughing at is that their knees were tired from squatting so long, but it is still a very special photo to me. :)

I often get the “we haven’t taken family pictures in a l-o-n-g time” or “we’re not really picture-people” comments almost as if people are trying to warn me of something. So when I asked Tracy if I could take a few shots of just her, she kind of gave me the “well…. if you insist….” response. Moms, it is so important to have pictures of yourself (and you with your family) for your children. I recently talked to the daughter of a client who has since passed away. The daughter repeatedly thanked me for the photos of her mother, expressing how much they mean to her & her siblings, and how much it means to her to have a beautiful portrait of her mother. Not mom in pajamas playing with the kids, not mom after a hard day at work/housework, not mom watching brother’s t-ball game, but a portrait of a beautiful mother that is just “her.” Thanks so much for obliging, Tracy! Meet Miss Chloe. Chloe is the much-anticipated little sister of two dashing big brothers. Sometimes she makes faces that look like her brothers, sometimes she looks like her mom. She’s looking nice and plump in these photos and she was only 7 days old! And she has more hair than my 20 month old daughter.

Am I allowed to tease a little bit? This is Brooke at my wedding (purple sweater checking out my ring) and may I say I am so blessed to have had her be a part of my life all these years. I am so happy that she could’ve been a part of my wedding day, and I could be a part of hers! I love you Brooke!!!

Brooke & Tyler were married for time and all eternity in the Las Vegas LDS Temple. Brooke is the oldest of seven, with these handsome fellows as her younger brothers. Check out an awesome story at the end of the post!

I love the splash of color of a fun pair of shoes and personal details to the wedding outfits/decor. Brooke’s hair accessory was her grandmother’s.

The reception was a backyard garden party and was just gorgeous! From the strung lights, paper lanterns over the dance floor, ribbons in the trees, flowers & candles everywhere, gazebo especially built for this occasion, cheesecake bar, a photo sign-in book, and engagement and wedding photos displayed, this reception was beautiful!!! And thankfully, the weather was perfect too. Photos of the reception details are below. Flowers were provided by the talented Susan Wise.

Brooke & Tyler officially got engaged just a few days before her grandmother passed away suddenly in a car accident. They originally had picked a day in April for their wedding date, but then moved it back to March. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I was told they unknowingly picked her grandparent’s anniversary. On his own wedding anniversary, her grandfather performed the ceremony of marrying and sealing Brooke & Tyler to each other for time and all eternity. It was a very sweet feeling to know that Brooke’s lovely grandmother was there in spirit enjoying this day with her family. We are so blessed to know that “life” continues after we die and our families can continue after we die. Congratulations to Brooke & Tyler and your families and thank you for letting me celebrate this fabulous day with you!

Violin Girl | Las Vegas Childrens Photographer

My daughter received a violin for her birthday last year. She was ecstatic when she opened it. After a few months of lessons, I convinced her we needed to get some violin portraits done. Finally, she agreed. And let me curl her hair. And dress her. And take her to a fun location. And then…. The uncooperativeness comes out. I even bribed her with a shake from In-n-Out, which she still got even though she didn’t smile for me. Anyways, many thanks to Grandma Geri for the violin and to Samantha, the best teacher ever!

You know, if you think photographing one newborn is hard… imagine trying to photograph TWO NEWBORNS!!! Yeah, you guessed it: When one was sleepy, the other was grumpy, and vice versa. And if by chance, we got them both asleep, it didn’t last long! These guys were slightly past the 2 week mark, and I think for twins, the age limit is now ONE WEEK OLD! lol

Steampunk | Las Vegas Portrait Photographer

What is Steampunk?? Steampunk is a mix of science fiction, fantasy, Victorian, and Wild West. Think H.G. Wells and Jules Verne. Think petticoats, corsets, vests and top hats mixed with telescopes, trains, clock gears, and ray guns. Think The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (and I always think of the new Sherlock Holmes movies.)

When a group of photographer friends wanted to get together and have a shoot-out and they picked the Clark County Heritage Museum as the location, I said “we need some steampunk-ers!” Having been to the museum many times and knowing what it has to offer, I knew the “ghost town” area of the museum would be perfect for some steampunk models. The lovely Heather contacted the Las Vegas Steampunk Tea Society, whose members were more than happy to oblige. Many of our models expressed their gratitude for us giving them the opportunity to get dressed up for the afternoon. They put a lot of time and effort into gathering just the right prop or piece for their outfits, and usually don’t dress steampunk everyday, so they were happy to have an occasion to dress for. And we were so happy to have them model for us!! Thank you!!!

Yes, can you imaging getting laced into this corset??? I don’t think you’d want to wear something like that every day Mimi is totally smashing in it though, and in her hip pocket there, that’s her iPhone!! Ken made her a custom steampunk phone case! If you can’t find a special addition to complete your outfit, you make it yourself!

Meet Mandy Magpie and her Sherriff. I asked Amanda if she felt like she became a character when she dress in her steampunk style. She replied “Oh yes!” and proceeded to tell me about Mandy Magpie, the bubbly socialite who is always hosting parties.

One thing I noticed is the details. Like Mimi’s phone. And the clock spindles in Amanda’s hat. And Gabriel (aka the Sherriff) wearing his grandfather’s pocket watch. It is the little things like that that really complete an outfit (this applies to regular outfits too, not just steampunk-wear.)

This photos are from the same day I did Laundry Day with Katie and the family of little cowboys. It was a busy but FUN day.
