Ever wonder why Heart symbolizes Valentine’s. Okay, there might be a simple explanation to that. It follows as Heart symbolizes love. But there is a deeper history to that to.

The symbol of the heart is a bit more mysterious. Aristotle though the heart was the center of all emotions. Surely, everyone who has been heartbroken feels that heaviness in the center of the chest. Of course, when someone is excited, the heart beats faster. Thus, it is a natural inclination to associate heart with passion.The problem is that the heart shape of a valentine really does not look like a heart. The origin of the heart shape must come from somewhere else. The possibilities are tantalizing. One of the most intriguing suggestions stems from the seventh century B.C. city-state of Cyrene. Cyrene traded the rare, now extinct, plant silphium. It was known as a means for birth control. The seedpod of the silphium looks exactly like a valentine's heart. Moreover, its use in sex is an obvious connection to love.Truthfully, the origins of the valentine heart should end here, but what is a story without a salacious ending?Some claim that the round, soft edges of the heart represent fertility or a female body. Since a Valentine is all about love, it is a reasonable suggestion.

Another thing is that, the human heart is shaped like heart....think so? i do.

60 Minutes' story on gold!
Mr. Pelley missed the real story on conflict gold and instead gave us milk!

Every Sunday I meet with Scott Pelley and the other staff members of the long running CBS news show, 60 Minutes, to review the investigations that the crew has been doing over the past few months. Of course I am one of millions of others who also attend these meetings via our local CBS stations, but for the decades of faithful attendance at these weekly reports I feel as if I am a part of this news team as I am sure other long time viewers do also.

Last Sunday, however, I was disappointed at Scott Pelley’s report on the gold mines of the People’s Republic of the Congo . The main reason is that Scott went all the way to Africa to learn about the mining processes, but he failed to go a few hundred miles to small town America to learn about the impact his report would have on small town, independent retail jewelers. Mr. Pelley did what virtually all of the major network news shows do these days when it comes to jewelry related news stories, he got lazy. He went for the sensationalistic gonzo journalism and failed in the hard hitting 60 Minutes type reporting that those of us of the Vietnam era days remember.

If Mr. Pelley wanted to get to the real nadir of the problem he would have reported on the supply chain of AK-47 ammunition and RPG launchers to the Congolese thugs he just briefly discussed in his story. He failed to present the fact that it is the lack of marketing and distribution control of AK-47 ammo and RPG rounds that is the real problem in the Congo gold fields. That is where a true distribution control is needed….not with home town, independent jewelers regarding gold.

The timing of this story on the first weekend of the Holiday Season is regrettable.

The lack of journalistic acumen by Mr. Pelley is even more regrettable.

Looney Tunes Jewelry Collectibles

They are the fun adorable cartoon characters who just can’t get enough of each other. Who does not know them anyway, they are the Looney Tunes. The classic cartoons that started it all and gave Warner Brother it’s name. If I am to say, no other cartoons could be as famous as them, they are just so gigantic that until now, they are still around.

Who would forget the furious TAZ who is my personal favorite, always looking for something to eat. He is kinda bad but comes out still lovable. And one of the most famous phrase “I tawt I taw a puddy tat, I did! I did!” with that little tweety voice of Tweety Bird. For me, he is so trivial, he is actually a boy and honestly I thought he was a girl. And that bright yellow color he has just makes him so cute. That color makes him so attractive to Sylvester who will never give up until he gets to eat poor Tweety.

And there’s that classic chase by Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, that is fun.Another famous character of Looney Tunes would be Daffy Duck. The one who always aims high, and when he falls, he resets the bar …even higher. Finally, the most famous Bugs Bunny “What’s up doc?”. He is arguably the most popular and recognizable cartoon character of all time. And lets not forget Lola whom he adores.

Tiny Diamond Collection

I read this article of ISG (International School of Gemology) and their collection of Tiny Diamonds or Rough Uncut Diamond Crystals. Very interesting indeed. A lot of people would collect coins, bills, stamps but their collection is one of a kind and I think that only an institution like it can come up with such a collection. One thing that interests me the most is that we all know that Diamonds are lovely (finish product) but I never thought that Diamond in their uncut and unfinished appearance are beautiful as well. ISG has provided some photos of their collection, of course using a one of kind camera showing the beauty of these crystals.

Their collection consists of the string of diamond beads imported from India which I think if worn like that could already be an elegant, fashionable piece.

Then there is what they call the #81, it’s a 0.26 carat diamond crystal which was among the first produced that was both gem quality in clarity and color and is considered to be the great granddaddy of the synthetic diamonds that you see in the market today.

And then comes my favorite which is the Tiny Fancy Colors collection. There are the Yellow Diamonds, the oh so nice Purple ones, champagne, green, brownish pink and even orange diamonds.

Lastly, are the ones with the different shapes. And my favorite among all the shapes is this cube shape which is so clear it looks like ice cube.

This is not all, as they have mentioned that what they are showing is only 10% of their collection. Just imagine, how much more they have.

I had so much fun reading this article, something new for me. It’s just great to see the other side of these what they so call “Girls Best Friend”

Does anybody know how Father’s Day started and everything it went through just to have it made official. I myself think it’s good because of course if we have Mother’s Day then there should be Father’s Day. They too are very important in how we became what we are now. Let me give you an idea of how Father’s Day started.

Father's Day is a day honoring fathers, celebrated on the third Sunday of June in the USA and on various other days in many places around the world. It complements Mother's Day, the celebration honoring mothers.

Father's Day is a celebration inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother's Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting, and to honor and commemorate fathers and forefathers. Father's Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide and typically involves gift-giving, special dinners to fathers, and family-oriented activities.

Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd of Washington thought independently of the holiday one Sunday in 1909 while listening to a Mother's Day sermon at the Central Methodist Episcopal Church at Spokane, and she arranged a tribute for her father on June 19, 1910. She was the first to solicit the idea of having an official Father's Day observance to honor all fathers.

Father's Day was met with laughter. The holiday was gathering attention slowly, but for the wrong reasons. It was the target of much satire, parody and derision, including jokes from the local newspaper. Many people saw it as just the first step in filling the calendar with mindless promotions like "Grandparents' Day", "Professional Secretaries' Day", etc., all the way down to "National Clean Your Desk Day."

A bill was introduced in 1913, US President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea in 1924 and a national committee was formed in the 1930s by trade groups in order to legitimize the holiday. It was made a federal holiday when President Lyndon Johnson issued a proclamation in 1966.

This is the day when we can show our Father how much we love them and appreciate them. We can do that by doing something special like taking them out for dinner or giving them precious gifts like jewelry. Let this be just a day for them.

THROUGH the centuries people have worn jewelry to depict status, wealth and identity. Now there is another reason. Contemporary jewelry, the kind that is fought over by passionate collectors, focuses as much on intellectual inquiry and the telling of stories as it does on the exploration of materials and techniques.

Contemporary jewelry is wearable sculpture, and the wearability of a piece and the way it moves on the body are of critical importance to the artists who create it. This work is a product of head, heart and hand, with the head element uppermost. Pieces can be made of anything: found objects, recycled junk, textiles, plastic—even paper. If they include precious metals and gemstones, these rarely appear in conventional forms. Collectors are mainly professionals.

“Collect”, an international fair for contemporary objects, which opens in London later this month, will show a number of artists who explore concepts of preciousness, value and beauty by subverting traditional materials and techniques. Some are German, Swiss and British, as well as Dutch. Otto Künzli famously made a rubber bracelet concealing a gold ball inside. Karl Fritsch ground gemstones into powder and reassembled them with glue. He is now experimenting with drilling holes in the gems and knotting them together in varying configurations. Gijs Bakker, co-founder of Droog, a design company, combines gemstones with costume pieces. Ulrich Reithofer combines gold and glass shards in a necklace.

This is jewelry offering a very different expression of identity. The wearer of such pieces challenges preconceived notions. It can include a whiff of intellectual snobbery, as the wearer can be seen as “buying a bit of the artist’s brain”.

Some of them might not be wearable but only for expression of art purposes but some of them are and they are very unique and very much modern. Be adventurous and have them, besides, everything is a work of art depending on how art is to each individual.

Blue Diamond Auctioned for Record $9.49 Million

A flawless vivid blue diamond weighing 7.03 carats sold for a record 10.5 million Swiss francs ($9.49 million), the highest price paid per carat for any gemstone at auction, Sotheby's said. The rectangular-shaped blue stone, the rarest to enter the international market this year, went to an anonymous buyer bidding by telephone after hectic bidding see-sawed between two callers for 15 minutes.

According to Petra’s CEO Johan Dippenaar, the price reflects how incredibly rare and collectable such a diamond is to the connoisseur. “The renowned Cullinan mine continues to captivate the world with spectacular diamonds, building on its legacy as the source of some of the world’s most famous gems.”

It was the centerpiece of its semi-annual sale in Geneva, conducted by David Bennett, chairman of Sotheby's jewelry department in Europe and the Middle East, who said the results showed the market's resilience despite the economic downturn.
"This is already a new world record price for a fancy vivid blue diamond and a new world record per carat for any gemstone (at auction)," Bennett told reporters.
The final price includes a commission paid by the buyer to the auction house. The stone sets a record price per carat for any gemstone sold at auction of $1,349,752, Sotheby's said.

The new owner will have the right to name the stone, which is mounted in a platinum ring.

The modern Mother's Day holiday was created by Anna Jarvis as a day for each family to honor its mother and it's now celebrated on various days in many places around the world.

In 1912, Anna Jarvis trademarked the phrases "second Sunday in May" and "Mother's Day", and created the Mother's Day International Association. "She was specific about the location of the apostrophe; it was to be a singular possessive, for each family to honour their mother, not a plural possessive commemorating all mothers in the world."

Mother's Day is celebrated on different days throughout the world.The extent of the celebrations varies greatly. In some countries, it is potentially offensive to one's mother not to mark Mother's Day. In others, it is a little-known festival celebrated mainly by immigrants, or covered by the media as a taste of foreign culture (compare the celebrations of Diwali in the UK and the United States.

Wherever we may be, we all have something in common and that is our mother who loved us unconditionally. Let us make this day a very special one for her.

The 2009 Miss USA Pageant debuted Tiara's and jewelries made of synthetic diamonds portrayed as conflict free. It is very unfortunate that participants who spend so many years preparing for such a platform are given cheap substitutes for the real diamonds in the name of going green & Conflict Free.

If the pageant owners (one of them is Mr. Donald Trump) are so concerned about 'CONFLICT FREE' then they should have considered sourcing diamonds from counrties like Australia, Canada or a dozen other countries or sources which are confirmed 100% Conflict Free.

So, what's the story behind Easter Sunday? This is a day that is very important for Christian and somehow most people celebrate it regardless of their religion because it has become a worldwide tradition.

Christians celebrate Easter Sunday because Jesus rose from death. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is one of the fundamental principles and beliefs of Christianity and a well documented historical fact. Christians celebrate Easter Sunday because they believe, Jesus died for their sin on the Cross on Good Friday. Jesus was buried on Friday and rose from death on Sunday. Christians believe only Jesus can give eternal life, because He overcame death.

On Easter Sunday, you will see people celebrate it by having the Easter Egg Hunt, fun for kids and somehow for all ages. Finding those egg is as fun as playing a game with prices when you win. Some eggs are empty and some has prices. So, goodluck to all the Easter Egg Hunters out there!

Oscar's Night 2009 Glitz and Glamour

Most of America was tuned into the 81st Academy Awards on Sunday night and watching E!'s red carpet coverage to get a thorough review of everyone's outfits! Since the Oscars are the pinnacle of the award show season, we expected the usual overflow of jaw-dropping ensembles. But surprisingly, a lot of artists decided to come out conservative with the Jewelries they wear. But ofcourse, there were some also that was a standout. Here is to name a few:

Sometimes all it takes to truly make waves on the red carpet is the perfect black dress. Angelina Jolie reminded us of this fashion fact in her floor-length raven Elie Saab Couture Dress. To finish, the actress punched up her already-untouchable status with a pair of 115-carat Lorraine Schwartz emerald teardrop earrings (plus a matching 65-carat ring) and a Lana Marks Cleopatra Clutch. In short: she looked super luxurious and very villainess chic.

Jewelry was big at the Oscars this year, but nothing was as big as the 19th Century Diamond Flower Necklaces from Fred Leighton, seen above on Taraji P. Henson.

We know Heidi Klum was wearing "very expensive" bracelets from Heart Truth for charity, but she's also wearing 3 Diamond Bangle Bracelets and 1 Diamond and Coral Bracelets by Lorraine Schwartz. We don't know how she can lift her arm, but this stacking look is 80's-made-modern with the use of vintage-esque pieces.

One of the loveliest necklaces of the night; this 19th Century Diamond Flower Necklace is from Fred Leighton, too.

The lovely Diane Lane's sexy, almost dangerous-looking choker is by Neil Lane (no relation).

So, seeing the Oscar's 2009 jewelry fabs, it seems like Vintage is really back. It's a classic, will never go away, just here to stay.

Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Scientists are reporting that diamonds could have created chemical reactions billions of years ago that were believed to have caused life on Earth.

Diamonds may have been life's best friend. Billions of years ago, the surface of these gems may have provided just the right conditions to foster the chemical reactions believed to have given rise to life on Earth, researchers in Germany reports.

In the new study conducted, Andrei Sommer, Dan Zhu, and Hans-Joerg Fecht point out that scientists have theorized for years that the chemical precursors of life gradually evolved from a so-called "primordial soup" of simpler molecules. But the details of how these simpler amino acid molecules, the building blocks of life, were assembled into complex polymers, remains one of science's long standing mysteries.

To find out, the research team studied diamonds, crystallized forms of carbon which are older than the earliest forms of life on Earth. In a series of laboratory experiments, the scientists showed that after treatment with hydrogen, natural diamond forms crystalline layers of water on its surface, essential for the development of life, and involved in electrical conductivity.

When primitive molecules landed on the surface of these hydrogenated diamonds in the atmosphere of early Earth, the resulting reaction may have been sufficient enough to generate more complex organic molecules that eventually gave rise to life, researchers say.
