The jewellery designer who turns profits into aid for the poor

Instead of using bows and arrows to take from the rich and give to the poor, she uses the money spent by wealthy people on her expensive handmade pieces to help some of the world's most disadvantaged communities.

With her jewellery selling for as much as £70,000 per item, London-based Pippa is in demand with fashion houses like Gucci, Chloe and Nicole Farhi.

Her designs are worn by celebrities including actress Nicole Kidman, and Pippa attends fashion weeks around the world. Yet in stark contrast to such glitz and glamour, she also inhabits a completely different world.

Flawless diamond sells for record $26.7m

A flawless diamond has set a world auction record, selling for $26.7m (£17.5m).

The rare Botswana-mined 101-carat diamond was sold at a Christie's auction in Geneva.

It was bought by the Harry Winston firm and beat the previous record set by the 76-carat Archduke Joseph diamond, which sold for £21m (£13.8m) in November 2012.

Arrests over $50m Belgium airport diamond heist

Police in Belgium, Switzerland and France have arrested 31 people in connection with one of the world's largest robberies of diamonds.

Belgian prosecutors say they have recovered large sums of money and some of the diamonds that were taken in a raid at Brussels airport in February.

A gang cut through the airport's perimeter fence and broke into the cargo hold of a Swiss aeroplane as it waited for take off.

They took $50m (£32m) of diamonds.

How New Technology is Transforming Jewelry Industry

A 3D printing technology will be a "shape changer" for the jewellery industry, according to the leading UK supplier of precious metals to the trade.

The technology, called laser sintering, is being employed by Cookson Precious Metals to produce jewellery from computer designs.

Stella Leyton, chief executive of the firm, said as a result, high-street shoppers could expect to see more personalised jewellery offered by retailers.

But others say the approach is relatively expensive, and the pieces produced still require significant work before sale.

Industrial heritage

Inside the highly secure Cookson factory in Birmingham's jewellery quarter many machines hark back to the firm's long heritage.

Large mechanical rollers shape pool-cue sized rods of silver, there's the sound of metal being worked, and the smell of gas in the air.

Laser sintering is different. The machine that Cookson currently use looks like a large piece of office equipment and sounds like a photocopier.

Behind a tinted glass panel 18-carat gold powder, laid down by a robot arm, sparkles as a laser fuses the metal into complex three-dimensional shapes, layer by layer.

Titanic jewels to go on display

Most of the jewelry recovered from the wreckage of the Titanic will go on public display for the first time with a three-city tour. The collection includes diamond and sapphire rings, brooches, necklaces, cuff links and a gold pocket watch and will be on display in the existing 'Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition' in Atlanta at Atlantic Station from Nov. 16 – Jan. 6.

Move over, Hope Diamond. The most famous gems on Earth have new competition in the form of a planet made largely of diamond, astronomers say.

The alien planet, a so-called "super-Earth," is called 55 Cancri e and was discovered in 2004 around a nearby star in our Milky Way galaxy. After estimating the planet's mass and radius, and studying its host star's composition, scientists now say the rocky world is composed mainly of carbon (in the form of diamond and graphite), as well as iron, silicon carbide, and potentially silicates.

The US has the largest gold reserves in the world but if the gold exchange standard was implemented, the US would need to ensure that it was more attractive to hold dollars than gold. This could be done by raising interest rates. But the latter would risk dragging the US in to recession. However, if like Congressman Paul you are concerned about the amount the US government is spending and borrowing, downward pressure on the country's debt would be welcome.

Meanwhile, the US has run a large balance of payments deficit for years and the mountain of US public debt grows ever higher. Both of these problems would continually put pressure on any fixed link to gold. Foreign governments would look at American debt and worry about the country's ability and willingness to maintain the dollar's link to gold.

Given how opposed most economists are to a return to gold, what is behind the desire to explore the issue?

The worldwide retail market for diamond jewelry was $60 billion in 2010. Like the gold business, the diamond business is segmented into several groups:

Miners and producers, who mine rough diamonds, then sort and sell them.
Cutters and polishers: those who buy rough diamonds from the producers, then cut and polish.
Jewelry manufacturers who create finished pieces.
Retailers who sell the finished jewelry to consumers.

That's also true for emerging market countries like India and China. And currency fluctuations are also an issue. The declining value of the Indian rupee, for example, is a major reason why diamond sales in that country declined in the second quarter of 2012 compared to the same period last year.

What's hot in diamonds right now? Big ones. The biggest increase in pricing has been for larger stones of two carats and above. For example, between 2006 and 2010, prices for a polished one-carat diamond went up 5 percent a year, but prices for a three-carat diamond went up 10 percent, while prices for a five-carat diamond increased 17 percent.

Auctioneers Christie's say that the diamond - the biggest of its kind ever to be sold - was bought by an anonymous telephone bidder.

The Martian Pink diamond is extremely rare. Its owner believed it would fetch the best price in Hong Kong.

The diamond had been expected to sell for between $8m and $12m (£5m - £7.6m).

"The bids were very competitive... there was a lot of excitement... when it finally did come up for sale the buzz in the room was sensational," said Christie's auctioneer Rahul Kadakia.

The 12-carat gem got its name in 1976 when it was sold by US jeweller Harry Winston. It was the same year the US sent a satellite to Mars, and the gem was named for the colour of the planet.

"It comes from Harry Winston, who was so impressed that the Americans had landed on Mars in 1976 that he looked at his inventory and he found a rough diamond which probably could come out as pink," said Francois Curiel, from Christie's jewellery department.

It is mostly common to the Mediterranean region but there are a few found in Asia and China.

The Narcissus has a trumpet shaped corona that is surrounded by a ring of petals. They are also poisonous and can be fatal if eaten so no parts of the flower should be ingested.
