The year would be over in a few hours from now. It's always good to look back and reset our inner compass.

Though I was aware about blogging, it was through my eldest niece, about 2 1/2 years back, that I learnt about the possibility of making money through blogging.

I didn't have the knowhow and the resources at that point in time to get my own hosting and domain names.

Then a colleague told me about affiliate marketing. Finally, with my brother's help I was able to purchase hosting space and domain names in the January of this year. Been working full time trying to milk $$$ from the net for the last 11 months.

I realized posting on blogger was a distraction. Usually I jumble things up. I started blogging to make money but really wanted to post about my state in India - Uttarakhand. Long story. Search Engines like blogs and sites focused on a particular topic.

Have to tie up the loose ends and refocus my attempts on making a living writing on the internet. Thanx a lot to all the visitors.

Google to Buy Groupon for $ 6 Billion

According to Bloomberg - Google is about to acquire Groupon for $ 6 Billion.

This would be Google's biggest acquisition so far. According to the story, Google is under pressure to diversify because of Facebook's growing prominence.

Having worked as an affiliate with both Google Affiliate Network , erstwhile DoubleClick Inc. and Google's biggest acquisition so far @ $3.2 billion - and Groupon, I can say that big is not always beautiful.

Though GAN has lots of Merchant's the interface isn't the most intuitive and IIRC last month there was a tracking issue with Sears and Kmart links. I joined Groupon sometime back and wasn't really impressed. Maybe they are stretched for resources and looking for funding as they try and expand.

Groupon's performance has been impressive but according to experts - the model can be easily copied and Google's bid is over priced.

There are lots of discount coupon sites in India, though the market is in a nascent stage. Also saw a news story which said Chinese search giant baidu has launched it's own discount code site.

It would be interesting to watch the developments in this corner of the internet.

Facebook Email Launched!

Well not yet but there are rumours that Facebook will lauch it's email service in a few hours. Apparently Facebook emailed reporters an invitation to a news event in San Francisco on Monday which featured a checkered blue-and-red border similar to classic air mail envelopes. Source - CBC News

Facebook and Google have been involved in a data-mining row. Facebook and Microsoft seem to be pals right now - according to a news report I read in The Times of India earlier in the day.

Facebook has more than 500 million active users and it's email service is bound to be a hit. For more statistics on Facebook users please visit - Facebook Statistics.

Facebook ad revenue is predicted to surpass US $ 1.2 billion this year.

Pfizer to Buy King Pharmaceuticals for $3.6 Billion

According to PR News Wire, Drug Major Pfizer is all set to acquire King Pharmaceuticals - a maker of pain medications. The cash deal is worth $3.6 billion.

Pfizer will pay $14.25 for each share of King Pharmaceuticals. This is 40% above the market price of King Pharma share price on Monday. Major brands promoted by King Pharmaceuticals include Avinza, Skelaxin, Embeda, EpiPen, and Levoxyl.

King Pharma markets its Branded Prescription Pharmaceutical Products primarily through a dedicated sales force of over 700 individuals through out the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. It also has a sales force of around 100 individuals which markets the Animal Health Products in the U.S, Europe, Canada, Latin America and Asia.

For some reason yesterday's linky post on Navratri SMS Scraps Greetings Wallpapers didn't attract thousands of visitors like the one on Happy Ugadi and Gudi Padwa : Greetings SMS and some other posts, which primarily had links and were based on Google Hot Trends.

One of the reasons cud be that I don't update this blog very often now, unlike in the past. Perhaps Google likes blogs/sites which are updated often. Been a bit busy trying to reorganise sites which promote affiliate products. Have decided to focus on a fewer number of them and develop static sites in future, as they don't look stale if there are no updates for a few weeks or even months.

Tomorrow is the 10th and the month is October, the year is 2010 so the date should be 10.10.2010. For some reason a lot of people think it is going to be 10.10.10 Saw an article in the newspaper today that thousands, or hundreds, of couples are planning to get married tomorrow as 10.10.10 comes once in a century and the date is auspicious.

10/10/10 and 10 10 10 are pretty high on Google Hot Trends right now. Fist term is #10 :) right now and the second one #18. Geek Central says Ubuntu 10.10 will be released tomorrow. Herald Sun writes on why 10/10/10 is the perfect day to marry. My view is that Ms Ryan is 2000 years too late. TUAW suspects iOS 4.1 jailbreak is due on 10/10/10 10:10:10AM.

Suzy Welch has authored a book titled 10-10-10 : A Life-Transforming Idea yes that is an affiliate link. Thanx a lot Google for embedding the Amazon Widget right besides the post editor.

Feel a bit blank now. Would try and finish the year with over 100 posts, like in 2008 and 2009. And write something meaningful - rather than just posting links.

Windows Live To Shut Down Users Shifted To WordPress

Windows Live is shutting down. Microsoft announced that the users will have six months to shift to WordPress. This is how you can Upgrade to WordPress.

Conceivably Tech says Microsoft May Acquire WordPress. That I think would be a big tragedy. I have a few self-domains which use WordPress and won't like to pay for something which is available free of charge and I am sure there are millions of WordPress users like me.

When I started blogging 2 years ago WordPress was a bit behind Blogger in terms of internet tarffic. I am sure now it would be #1. Tried Googling for traffic details of sites based on different platforms but couldn't get any data. It would be a good catch for Microsoft but a big setback for those of us who support Open Source and like free goodies.

If Microsoft does acquire WordPress their primary interest would be to monetize it directly or indirectly. I don't think they would be really interested in keeping the developer community behind WordPress alive.

I came across Text Pattern a few weeks ago and liked it. Didn't install it coz not very comfortable with FTP. Hostgator doesn't provide the option of Fantastico installation for Text Pattern.

Home Goods Christmas Tree Ornaments

Last month I started working on a site dedicated to Christmas Gifts. Checked a few sites on google's first page for different search terms related to Christmas Gifts and decided I'll try and make some money, thru this site, during the holiday season.

Ofcourse the top keywords are very competitive and the sites ranking 1-10 for them must have been around for some years. Displacing them would be a tough task. I'd be happy if I am able to make between 10-20 K from the site, in US $.

Really tired of posting 50-100 posts on different blogs, focussed on health products, and making just $ 150 - 200 each month. Biggest challenge would be to add content during the next few weeks, therez not much time left if you are starting a new site on Christmas Gifts.

While I havn't submitted the site-map to search engines I'm pretty satisfied coz one of the pages has made it to the second page on google for the search term home goods christmas tree ornaments. I know the pages already up are thin on content. My aim would be to have 4-5 vendors listed on each page.

I've also integrated a blog. I guess blogs are good for attracting traffic. The downside is that updating the site gives me little time to write posts for other blogs. It is difficult being a one man army.

Would be great to have feedback on the site and how to improve it. Will post about how the site is developing in a couple of weeks.

Ubuntu Gentoo Linux Support In Dehradun

I support Open Source and was pretty sure that when I purchase my own system it would run on an Open Source Operating System. But I am pretty lazy and like the majority went for Windows. The system had a virus issue due to an infected pen drive and I got the Operating System reinstalled - however, once the Norton trial period expired (30 days) the virus cropped up again. That's when I remembered Open Source Linux Based OS's.

Tried installing Ubuntu from an old Chip disc I had but it didn't work. Went to a bookshop, purchased the latest edition of Linux For You and installed Mandriva, the disc came free alongwith the magazine. Couldn't figure out how to make the Tata Photon Plus wireless modem work on Mandriva. Searched the net for Linux Support in Dehradun but couldn't find much.

Saw an ad for FOSS Technical Support in Dehradun, on Dehradun Classifieds, and gave Devakrit a call. Devakrit is a self taught Linux pro and was really happy to find him. He installed the latest version of Ubuntu - Lucid Lynx 10.04 - on my system and the internet and the printer - HP Deskjet F 2488 - work fine. The look and feel of Ubuntu is much better than windows. Herez what my desktop looks like right now :

Ubuntu has a repository of over 30,000 software programs! and is strongly backed by Canonical.

Devakrit also provides support for Gentoo installation and customization. It's also possible to install Linux alongwith Windows if you are reluctant to bid a final farewell to the popular but not very secure operating system.

Linux based Operating Systems used to be text based and difficult to operate for laymen but not anymore. Ubuntu is just as easy to use as Windows and the performance is much much better. Alternatives are available for all Windows Utilities and they are free!

Twitter Dominates Google Real Time Search

Finally Google has launched its real-time search website which aggregates data from social media and features constantly updated news.

There are many social media search engines but I guess Google has lots more resources than small startups and Google Real Time Search would gobble up the competitors.

Tried out about a dozen keywords and was a bit disappointed to see that Twitter accounts for nearly all the search results. For some keywords there were a couple of results from Facebook.

Only time will tell how popular Google Real Time Search is. In my view Google Blog Search isn't as popular as it ought to be. Most of the search traffic on my blogs comes from plain google search. I guess people like simplicity.

One important thing to note is that Orkut - google's social media site does not allow data to enter from and leave to other sites - unlike Facebook, Twitter and most other Web 2.0 networking and micorblogging platforms. So it is impossible that any results from Orkut would be displayed in Google Real Time Search.

Finally Facebooks has displaced Orkut as the largest social networking site in India. According to a Comscore Press Release -

Facebook grabbed the number one ranking in the category for the first time in July with 20.9 million visitors, up 179 percent versus a year ago.

More than 33 million Internet users age 15 and older in India visited social networking sites in July, representing 84 percent of the total Internet audience. India now ranks as the seventh largest market worldwide for social networking, after the U.S., China, Germany, Russian Federation, Brazil and the U.K. The total Indian social networking audience grew 43 percent in the past year, more than tripling the rate of growth of the total Internet audience in India.

Meeting Old Friends

They say wine tastes better with age; is it the same with friends?

Met an old buddy after many years today. Time changes people. What remians constant are our emotions. There are lots of things to say.

Are our times different than those of people behind us, I've never thought so. But body language teaches us a lot. Not just this mate but an another one too - after having spent some time in an economically developed nation didn't hug front on. Does money make us less sure about those around us. It certainly does.

Is there a middle path as suggested by the Buddha? Personally I think its not possible bcoz we either progress or regress. If we make more money we move away from relationships and emotions and vice versa. Would like to meet the friend who taught me the middle path :

Siach an Innovative School in Israel

School usually is boring. Sure there are friends but nearly all schools have a very defined syllabus and classes have a strict schedule. Most kids are not that excited about rising up in the morning and getting ready to face the monotonous schedule.

This morning I learnt about Siach. It means "dialogue" in Hebrew. Located in Klil, a small village in Israel - Siach is not your regular school.

Acoording to the Siach website :

Siach is not a school in its usual meaning. It is more of a community, an extended family, a village for children; a place where children may live their life fully. Just the same as with adults, the life is experienced through and around the various members in the community, depending on their personalities, abilities and choices. In this aspect Siach provides the stage and setting for the personal life journey of each.

The pressing problems of the society today are not lack of knowledge or professional qualification, but of the internal quality of life. Violence; communication difficulties; self dissatisfaction; loneliness and isolation; lack of belonging; all these are the expressions of the post-modernist society life and of the fact that we are, largely, untaught in the art of living, in social skills. Siach focuses on teaching the art of living. It is about education and not about learning. Learning occurs naturally, when the conditions are right and without disturbance.

Noticed a couple of hours ago that some of my affiliate marketing blogs have got Pagerank. Pretty satisfied though I expected this blog to move upto PR 4.

Read the news in a Hindi National Daily this morning.

According to TVNZ

Facebook had previously taken the top spot on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in 2009, and New Year's Day 2010, but its recent performance marked the first time it had retained this position for an entire week.

Google has been in first place since 2007, when it overtook MySpace, which has been in decline ever since.

Some Inferences :
* It's like comparing apples and oranges. Networking sites and search engines are different animals.
* Neither the newpaper article nor this piece on TVNZ provides the source. Most accurate source for ascertaining web traffic is Alexa which is highly manipulatible.
While I have an Alexa widget installed on this blog, I've never installed the Alexa toolbar on my system or asked my buddies to do so. It's good to know but worthless to spend more time on a thing than its worth. Why - we have a team blog setup by students studying in my hometown which is well inside the Alexa 100,000. I won't bother providing the link.
* One important element missed is time spent per visitor on these sites. Ofcourse Facebook will win hands down. I find it strange why the data has not been made public.
* Social Networks are brittle. That's what I've learnt from a few articles I've read on the net and in Press.
* The real fight is for eyeballs and eventually PPC.

I may be wrong here but received an email from adsense a few days ago ...

We have launched a new capability in AdSense allowing Google-certified ad networks compete directly within AdSense, which means that advertisers from these third-party networks will be able to compete with AdWords advertisers to show on the Google Content Network ... and so it continues ...

Still waiting for google to acknowledge my adwords check so I can begin my first PPC campaign.

Should we really be bothered about traffic details about Facebook and Google in the United States? Maximum number of Internet Users are in China.

Wow. It would take me some time to understand how copyrite, social media, and major media, etc. etc. interact and work. Been trying to setup a network of content based affiliate marketing websites. Wrote to a few major publications asking them permission to rehash their articles without paying a penny ;) Most didn't reply. Those who did - said they want money.

I wake up this morning and see an email from forbes in my inbox. It says they have released their latest list on billionaires and Based on your content and focus we wanted to send you this link personally.

LOL that must be bcoz I've made a few posts on billionaires and they appear on google's first page for different phrases related to billionaires. Thanx a lot Mr. Fulwiler. It would be great if you could send such emails in future too. Billionaires interest me a lot.

So the crux seems to be - if major publications want to use you to create a buzz for their content they'll be happy to send you free alerts and links. But if u want to make some money by using their content they would cite copyrite restrictions.

Now lets learn a bit about Mr. Carlos Slim Helu. He has become the richest person in the world. Last year he was in the third position. Current worth $ 53.50 billion.
