I suggest you follow the guidance of the 9 main points found on the last page (226) of the reading, "7.3 - Was the New Deal a Success?"

I suggest writing your outline in a Word document or Google document and then COPYING and PASTING into your blog. It is due by 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 8. Title: New Deal Essay Outline Labels: New_Deal, FDR, Great_Depression

Your essay prompt is: How, and with what success, did the United States government try to solve the problems caused by the Great Depression?

Your outline should include the following: (Do NOT write an essay. Outline only.)

A strong, well-developed thesis statement that provides a structured framework for an argument.

The nature and scale of the problem facing Roosevelt

The action he took through the 1930s (the "Hows")

The impact of the New Deal on Americans (Successes / Failures / In-betweens)

The reasons for opposition to the New Deal (Counter-argument)

Your own judgement on its success. (To what extent... / with what success...)

Make sure you include specific evidence to support all of the above.

Use the information contained in all of the readings, the notes you took with your partner, the textbook, and class notes.

Thurs., Feb. 4 Homework

Homework listed below your quiz study guide.
Evidence that the New Deal was a success (Labor, Banking, Farmers, Tennessee Valley region, etc.)

It is in your GDoc account. Please use this reading and the other readings in the folder I've shared with you named, "Great Depression," to complete the outline for the Paper 2 essay question. The question is: How, and with what success, did the United States government try to solve the problems caused by the Great Depression?
The question and the suggested structure for the essay is contained in the document, "GD Effects P2 Question."
This is to be completed by 8:20 a.m. Thursday morning. Don't forget, there is a quiz on the effects of the Great Depression and the programs aimed at attempting to solve it. Completing this homework will go a long way toward studying for this.
As I've stated in class, it will most likely be one of your most difficult exams. Don't take it lightly. You need to know specific names, events, and use explicit examples that demonstrate your understanding of the topic. This knowledge will only come from study.

Use your answers to the readings that you've posted to your blog. Look at your Paper 1 and Paper 2 exams and review my comments. If you have questions, e-mail me or ask me at school.

Your Paper 1 topic is U.S. Imperialism. Your Paper 2 topics are listed below.

You will have to answer ONE essay question out of a choice of FIVE. The five broad topics are:

Industrial Revolution

Progressive Era

1920s

U.S. and World War I

Immigration

Rubric for Paper 2 Essay Outline

9-10: The outline clearly shows evidence of a structured argument, which includes key people and events. There are at least three major main points with supporting evidence.

6-8: The outline shows some evidence of a structured argument, which includes some key people and events. There is less than three major main points with supporting evidence.

1-5: There is little evidence of an argument or demonstration of any structure for the essay. It resembles a collection of notes. Any main points and / or supporting evidence is not well linked.

0: There is no outline OR there it is simply a collection of notes / words / phrases.

After thoughtful consideration and my concern for your learning I have decided to postpone the historical investigation process. This means that the only section that is due is the final draft of Section A, the plan of investigation, which is due at the end of today. The reasons for the postponement is the close proximity of the mid-term exams and I want to ensure that you have a better understanding of the collection of evidence. More practice will occur at the beginning of second semester.

THE FINE PRINT: Those that have failed to submit a draft of their Section A, still must do so by the end of this week. It will be graded as if it is your final draft. Those that have failed to submit 20 pieces of evidence for Section B, still must do so by the end of this week. No exceptions.

Do NOT continue working on your IA. This means do NOT attempt Sections C, D, E or finish F.

Homework: Due at the beginning of class Thursday

Welcome back. I hope you've had a relaxing break. There are two weeks left before mid-term exams begin and there is a lot of work to do.

Reminder: The final draft of your Section A is due on Tuesday and the final draft of Section B is due on Thursday. (Both at the end of the school day.)

Read Chapter 20-1 beginning on page 618 and answer the following questions. They are to be posted to your blog on Tuesday prior to the beginning of class.

Title: Americans Struggle with Postwar Issues Labels: Palmer_raids, KKK, Labor_Unions, Coolidge

After World War I, many Americans feared that Communists would take over the country.

1. How did the Justice Department under A. Mitchell Palmer respond to this fear?
2. Why did Palmer eventually lose his standing with the American public?
3. How did the Ku Klux Klan respond to this fear?
4. Why did the Klan eventually lose popularity and membership?
5. Briefly describe how Sacco and Vanzetti became victims of the Red Scare.

Public opinion turned against labor unions as many Americans came to believe that unions encouraged communism.

6. Why was the strike by Boston police unpopular with the public?
7. Why did Massachusetts governor Calvin Coolidge become so popular?
8. Why was the strike at U.S. Steel unpopular?
9. How did President Wilson respond to the steel strike?

Holiday Break Homework Suggestions

First of all, enjoy your extended break.
