Privacy is the flavor of the season! Every one values privacy on the Internet, but no matter how hard to you try to eliminate your browsing and other online history, temporary internet files, cookies, index.dat file, Flash cookies, etc, you will always end up leaving traces behind on your computer. While this may not affect most computer users, if you truly value your privacy and are looking to surf privately on the web, you can check out freeware Browzar.

Browzar is a shell browser for Internet Explorer which lets your browse anonymously without leaving any trace. Being based on Internet Explorer 9, makes it that much more secure. It also offers a Private Search too, but you are free to set any alternative search engine of your choice. It does not support ActiveX downloading and auto-complete too.
I found the .com button to be very handy and useful. No need to type the URL including .com or press Cntrl+Enter. Simply type the URL in the address bar and click on the .com button to add www and .com before and after the domain name.
Browzar comes in the installer version as well as a portable version, thereby letting you carry it on your USB stick. So the next time you are using a public computer like maybe at a cyber-cafe, your school or college library and you want to check out some sensitive information, you can simply plug in the USB stick and start browsing with Browzar. And if you need to close Browzar quickly or don’t want to have the clean up box showing when you exit, simply hit the “Boss Button” or Ctrl + Space keys and Browzar will close instantly.
On exit, Browzar deletes:

Temperory Internet Files
Cookies
Browsing History like list of sites visited
Index.dat file
Media files
Temporary Application data like Flash and Java files.

There is also an option to Secure Delete all your web history. The Secure Delete function can be activated by selecting the function under the Browzar ‘Tools’ menu.

Browzar Windows theme.

Better Explorer: An Explorer replacement with Windows 8 style ribbon toolbar

A program that is integral to Windows operations is ‘Windows Explorer’, better known as file and folder manager. It provides detailed information on your files and folders and we use it to rename, move, manage and organize our files and folder The explorer.exe has been greatly improved upon in Windows 7. But if you are looking to enhance and add more features to your Windows 7 Explorer, you can check out freeware Better Explorer.

Better Explorer, aka BExplorer is an open-source explorer replacement which looks quite similar to Windows’ own in-built explorer.exe, but differs in a way that it features a Windows 8 style ribbon toolbar, tabs and more! The toolbar gives access to many useful tools and options.

As shown in the screen-shot above, the main window of the program includes two more tabs besides ‘File’ tab i.e. ‘Home’ and ‘View’. The ‘Home’ tab gives access to:

Cut
Copy
Paste
Rename
Clone tab
Close tab options

On the other hand, ‘View tab’ provides sorting options to sort items by

At the top of the file-finder window, the program adds options that behave much as the Ribbon at the top of Microsoft Word’s newest layout does. Besides, Better Explorer provides a tabbed interface that makes it extremely convenient to work with several folders without cluttering up the taskbar and speed up the process of copying files between various locations at the same time.

Automate submision of malware or suspicious files to antivirus companies with X-ray

There are many antivirus software available today for Windows, but no one can be really considered to be the perfect solution. There will always be that occasional suspect file which may escape being detected by your anti-virus software. At such times we prefer to submit the files online to scan it with a single antivirus or even scan them using multiple anti virus definations using any of these online Malware Scanners. Sometimes, we even need to submit the files manually to security companies, so that they can carry out a manual analysis, in an attempt to develop antivirus definitions or advanced stand-alone removal tools.

The difficulty however, lies in the procedure for submitting a file which may vary from company to company. It can be either through a web form, email or a special tool. This makes the situation a lot more problematic since every web form is not similar and has different prerequisites. For example, some require the sample file to be sent in raw format whereas others want it to be compressed to ZIP or 7z form. Some require you to use a specific password for the ZIP file, while some don’t.

X-Ray is a freeware tool that lets you submit a suspicious file to one or over 30 security companies for manual analysis. To do so simply drag-and-drop the suspect file on to the application, select the companies you want to send the file to and then click on the Send for Analysis button.
You can also if you wish use this tool to get the file checked at VirusTotal with over 40 security software by clicking on the Send to VirusTotal button. Sure, VirusTotal also offers a desktop utility called as VirusTotal Uploader – just like Jotti does with its JottiQ – but X-ray lets you submit files directly to antivirus companies too.

The stand-alone tool does not require installation of any kind of software for it to run. Moreover, it automates the process of submitting suspicious files to 31 antivirus companies. This includes many popular companies like Kaspersky, Eset, McAfee, Avast, Microsoft, Symantec, AVG, Avira, Comodo, Virus Buster and others.

How to use X-Ray and submit a suspicious file

Download X-Ray zip file by clicking on the link provided at the end of the article and extract its contents to get X-Ray folder. The folder contains .exe file
Run .exe file to launch the program
Click on ‘Add Suspicious Files’ tab to add the suspicious file you would like to submit for manual analysis by company professionals
Click on ‘Settings’, create your email account (entering email ID, password) for sending the suspicious file to antivirus vendors. Use Test button to see if the newly created account is functioning properly
Now, choose the ‘analyse’ tab and select the antivirus companies whom the suspicious file needs to be sent and click on ‘Send for Analysis’ button to submit it to selected companies

Retrieves latest scan report from VirusTotal
Two methods of sending files to VirusTotal (Email and API)

P-Apps : Create a portable version of any software

If you have noticed these days, many freeware are now bening made available by developers with installers as well as in portable versions, since many prefer to use the portable versions on their Windows computer. But still there are many software that are available in the installer forms only.

Create portable software

If you want to create portable versions of such installer based software, you can check out P-Apps. P-Apps isolates the application from operating system and enables it to be used from a USB memory stick or flash drive.
The way P-Apps works is that, it first takes a snapshot of your system before you install a program. It then again takes a snapshot of your system after you install the software. It then compares the two and stores the differences, like new files, new registry entries, etc, in the portable package of the installed software.
So after you download it, you have to first run a pre-install scan, then install the desired software and then run the post-install scan. The changes are then stored seperately.
While P-Apps is technically able to work on all such installation based programs, since it is a new program, there may be a possibility that it may not work with some; especially those that perform kernel changes.

FIX: Access is denied error while installing software on Windows 7

If while installing a new software on Windows, you receive an Access is Denied error message, this article may help you in trouble-shooting the issue. This is one of the most common error we get, when we try to install any application on Windows 7. There are a few reasons why we may get to see this error message. In this article we’ll discuss a few tips to resolve this problem.

Access is Denied

Scenario 1:
One of the common reason is lack of administration rights. If you are logged in as Standard user, the installation will give you this error. So make sure you’re logged in as a Local Administrator. When I mean Local administrator, I mean that to say that you need to login as Local administrator - not Domain administrator. Because even if you are a Domain administrator, sometimes Domain policies will restrict access to certain locations. For instance, if you are installing Microsoft SQL Server, it’s highly recommend that you ensure that you are logged into the machine as Local administrator, otherwise you might get a lot of error message including Microsoft SQL Service Fails to start.
Scenario 2:
The other most common reason is User Account Control. Sometimes UAC will restrict you from accessing certain file locations or registry locations. The best practice is to always right-click on the setup and click on “Run as administrator”. By doing so, setup will elevate with full administrator rights. In some cases however, we may need to disable UAC temporarily, until you finish the installation.
To do so, go to Start under search type in “UAC”.

Click on “Change User Account Control settings”.

Make sure you drag the bar all the way to “Never Notify” then click OK and reboot the system and try to install it again. Do remember to change back the UAC settings, after you have completed the installation.
Scenario 3:
If it does not help, you may next try to disable your security software - because these software can be very tricky sometimes. It may restrict access to a specific path or specific registry location. Unfortunately there is no easy way to find it out. So it’s better to disable the security software completely and then try to install the software. Again, do remember to re-enable your security software, once your installation completes successfully.
Scenario 4:
There are some common location which sometime we are denied permissions. So far, the locations I have seen are Temp and Installer folder. So go to C:\Windows\Installer and %temp% and Take Ownership to these folders. Then try again.
Scenario 5:
The last steps you could try is to Enable Build-in administrator account:
To do so:
1) Click the Windows Start button and type in CMD.
2) Right-click on CMD and click on Run as administrator.
3) Command prompt will open up then type in

net user administrator /active:yes

Hit Enter. You will get a message “Command ran successfully”.
Type net user administrator , and then press ENTER.
Please replace the tag with your passwords, which you want to set to administrator account.
To disable the administrator account net user administrator /active:no
If nothing works try to re-download the application to make sure the download file is not corrupted. If you need further help, please post in our Windows forums. We’ll be more than happy to help you out.

Whilst you can of course access Facebook chat using the webs favorite social networking site Facebook.com directly, it’s not your only option. There are many reasons as to why you could be interested in using a third-party web tool to access Facebook chat. For example: you may be interested in a richer messaging experience, prefer something IM focused or need to be able to connect to other chat networks at the same time within the same browser window.

This article will discuss and offer 5 options.

1. Chit Chat for Facebook (Web)

This web-based Facebook messaging tool is developed by Athena IT Limited, the firm behind the Facebook chat app for PC Chit Chat for Facebook. You’ll find their web-based solution at its core to be a more inspired and advanced version of their desktop offering. Chit Chat for Facebook (web), as a web Facebook chat app unlike the software version, doesn’t require installation on your computer.

It is designed with a tabbed instant message window with different colored speech bubbles for each conversation participant. Its use of status icons (green =online, red = offline, orange = away) makes it easy to understand at a glance, which of your friends are online. At the top of the instant messenger, you are able to filter through your friend list by typing in their name.

2. Plus.IM

IM+ or, plus.im – depending on whether one is referring to product identity or the domain on which the solution is hosted is a popular multi-network connectivity tool.

For those who like minimalistic tools, this one is for you. Whilst I like the intuitiveness of the solution, it does feel lacking round the edges a bit – for example, the smiley icon codes do not match up to the Facebook ones and only one conversation can be open at a time in the conversation window.
Like Chit Chat, IM+ also offers a contact search tool. In my opinion, whilst Chit Chat (web) is clearly the better Facebook chat solution – for users who wish to use multiple networks at one time, IM+ is clearly superior.

Allows you to connect to several chat networks at once – including AIM, MSN, Google Talk, Yahoo, ICQ and of course Facebook.

3. Meebo

Like IM+, Meebo is a tool designed for connecting to multiple networks at once. However, the list of networks that you can connect to, are less in number, as compared to IM+.

Meebo seems to have focused on the most popular networks – so networks such as Facebook, MySpace, AIM, MSN, ICQ, etc, are all included in its supported list. In comparison to IM+ the technological production of Meebo feels more “solid” and less static – the look and feel of the product is somewhat similar to that of a desktop instant messenger.
Each conversation is launched in a separate pop over or pop-up window, which I didn’t like as I tend to prefer a tabbed solution for ease of use and to minimize clicks. Like IM+, Meebo supports emoticons and text formatting that is unsupported on Facebook.com.

Within this instant messenger, you’ll find Microsoft’s MSN emoticons, and support for functionality that only Windows Live Messenger supports – such as the customization of text size, font, color, style and nudging.
The integration of Facebook chat is convincing and stable.
You may notice that the web-based messaging service does not display your Facebook buddy images. The ILove.IM platform feels very similar to the Meebo design, in that the conversations are not tabbed.

5. LiveGo

LiveGo seems to go the extra mile in terms of Facebook integration. It supports the display of your messages, feeds, friend list, album and ofcourse chat. It’s a nice solution, if you don’t mind the ads.

It supports inserting emoticons, but the icons are ASCII rather than graphics which is disappointing. You’ll notice that it shows the buddy image for the individual you are talking too.
For me, LiveGo feels more like a workaround to access Facebook from office or school where Facebook is blocked rather than a solution in itself. LiveGo is trying to be an all encompassing social communicator – and it succeeds in doing that. However, with the lack of focus it doesn’t really add anything you can’t find anywhere else.
Advantages of LiveGo over Facebook.com

Connect to other social networks – MSN, Twitter, Gmail, AOL etc
Will likely bypass restrictions that your work or school filter has on Facebook.com feeds
Tidy interface

Smart Folders : Create Folders Quickly Just By Drag & Drop

Smart Folders is a free tool for Windows that allows users to create a folder just by dragging files/file over another file. It provides the same folder creation functionality that is present in iOS and Android 4.0 for saving time.

How To Use:

Run the installer and click the Install button. The app will now install and register itself for all extensions. But Windows and some other apps have already registered themselves for specific file extensions like .exe, .bat, .lnk etc. To register the app for specific file extensions, type the extension in the text box near File Extension and click Register. The in-built Disk Defragmenter in Windows 7 now runs as a low priority task in the background without affecting the performance of the computer. It uses the Task Scheduler to automatically keep the hard disk defragmented, by running when the machine is idle, and therefore does not affect the performance of the Windows. Windows 7 will disable disk defragmentation on SSD system drives, as you do not need to defrag a Solid State Drive.
The Windows Defragmentor, defragments files which are smaller than 64 MB only, for according to Microsoft’s benchmarks, fragments of this size, which already consist of at least 16000 contiguous clusters, have a negligible impact on performance. This means that games and large media files are effectively left as they are ! Microsoft feels that to defrag to combine fragments that are 64MB or larger requires significant amounts of disk I/O, which is against the principle of minimizing I/O, and puts more pressure on the system to find large, contiguous blocks of free space.
If you still want to defrag files larger than 64 MB too, you need to use certain other defrag parameters to be able to defragment files of all sizes.
For most, the best practices for using defragmentation in Windows 7 are simple – you do not need to do anything. But if you feel that you need to have a 3rd party defrag tools to better defrag and/or even defrag very large files easily and quickly, or if inspite of doing your best to troubleshoot the in-built disk defrag utility, you are unable to get the in-built defrag tool working, you might want to check out these 5 free defragmenting software.

Simply select the volume you want to analyze, click on the the volume name displayed on the interface and then click the ‘Analyze’ button. The program will analyze the disk volume and display results in seconds. Next step is to click the ‘Defrag’ button to initiate the defragmentation process.

Transact-SQL : Introduction and Overview

T-SQL or Transact-SQL is a proprietary extension to SQL (Sequential Query Language). The extended features includes: Improved performance, increased functionality and enhanced globalization support.
Transact-SQL is Microsoft SQL Server’s implementation of the language. It is largely SQL-92 compliant, so if you’re familiar with another vendor’s flavor of SQL, you’ll probably feel right at home with Transact-SQL. Transact-SQL uses stored procedures to retrieve data or to execute a query on to a database.

Stored procedures in Transact-SQL

Stored procedures are executable server-side routines. They give you great power and performance benefits if used wisely. Unlike user-defined functions (UDFs), stored procedures are allowed to have side effects. The reason for this is you cannot have transaction within function, whereas, in a procedure, they are allowed to change data in tables, and even alter object definitions. Stored procedures can be used as a security layer. You can control access to objects by granting execution permissions on stored procedures and not to underlying objects.
SQL Server 2008 supports different types of stored procedures: User-defined, system, and extended. You can develop user-defined stored procedures with T-SQL or with the CLR.
The following are some applications that can generate Transact-SQL:

General office productivity applications.
Applications that use a graphical user interface (GUI) to let users select the tables and columns from which they want to see data..
Distributed database systems from which data from SQL Server is replicated to various databases, or distributed queries are executed.
Data warehouses in which data is extracted from online transaction processing (OLTP) systems and summarized for decision-support analysis.

To explain more fully, programming in Transact-SQL is a blend of several distinct, yet integrated, components. Let us assume you want to build an application and you start with design and analysis of database as you wanted. And that you’ve built your development database using declarative SQL statements or perhaps a visual data modeling tool. You might later want to implement a set of complex business rules on your database tables through triggers coded in Transact-SQL. From there, you might create reports and business processing modules that support the user interface through stored procedures coded in Transact-SQL.
As mentioned earlier, SQL Server 2008 offers a wide variety of Transact-SQL features that enables developers to create new applications that can store and consume any type of data on any device, and enables all your users to make informed decisions with relevant insights. TORCS: An Open Source Car Racing Simulator Game

Those of you who like car racing simulator games may want to check out an open source game called TORCS. TORCS features more than 50 different cars, more than 20 tracks, and 50 opponents to race against.

The gameplay allows different types of races from the simple practice session, up to the championship and features a simple damage model, collisions, wheel properties, aerodynamics, etc.
You can steer using a steering wheel or a joystick, if the device is supported by your computer. But you can also use the mouse or the keyboard, to drive the cars.
The simulation features a simple damage model, collisions, tyre and wheel properties, aerodynamics and lets you race against upto 3 other friends of yours – in the split screen mode too!
This free, multi-platform Open Racing Car Simulator can be used as an ordinary car racing game, as a AI racing game and as a research platform too. It runs on Windows, Mac OS X, FreeBSD and Linux.

As users worldwide got the public availability of Windows Developer Preview, users started exploring it step by step. Here one of the member of DeivantArt named fediafedia has created one excellent Windows 8 theme based on Windows Developer Preview for Windows 7. This gives the look of Windows 8 in Windows 7.
Windows 8 theme BETA update:

Removed stripes and fade stuff, looks much sharper and nicer now.
Also removed glow from titlebar buttons and made some slight adjustments
Startmenu is no longer rounded
Glitch in the frames is almost invisible now (though still here)

Windows 8 theme Known bugs:
Edges are bugged a little, if anyone can help me fix this, I’d appreciate it.

We’ve previously posted about the new features in Microsoft Office Web Apps, but the other day on Twitter, a friend mentioned something that really sunk in that I thought would be worth sharing.

What if you don’t own a copy of Microsoft Office or like so many being hit with the bad economy, you just can’t afford to shell out the money to buy a copy, but in some instances having at least Microsoft Word is a necessity?

Create, View, Edit, Share Office documents free with Office Web Apps

If you have a Windows Live ID (Free), using your SkyDrive folder you still have access to the most widely used features of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, using Office Web Apps. Microsoft Office Web Apps will allow you to view, edit, and share Office documents from anywhere with a browser and an internet connection, for free.

Another plus to this is the ability to open documents saved in Office. So if your employee or friend sends you a document that you really need to open, you can simply open it from within your SkyDrive folder as well as other options such as Edit or Print just the same as if you were using Microsoft Office! This also eliminates the need to locate third-party alternatives if the need arises. You could even use Microsoft Office Web Apps on Microsoft SharePoint 2010.

Want to give it a try, it’s easy!

First you’ll need a Windows Live ID if you don’t already have one. Once you have a Windows Live ID simply visit the following link http://office.microsoft.com/web-apps/
Click the button to Get Started Free. This will open your SkyDrive folder that is included with your Windows Live ID.

Once SkyDrive loads simply click the button for the Office Web App you would like to use and begin creating Office Documents for Free!

Using Office Web Apps, you will be able to access Files From Any Location, with any web browser of your choice including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc. You will be able to download and save the Office documents to your computer and then view them with your Office software (if you have one) and vice versa. You can co-author and auto-sync files and even restrict access to them.
