Flight Night

After a week of orgasmic pleasure with my baby, I finally decided that it was time to sit down and write Part 2 of my Dell XPS M1530 review after she told me I was turning her on too much and she needed a break.

My XPS M1530 specifications.

Dell used to be known for producing powerful, solid but extremely unexciting gray boxes until 2007, when Dell adopted a design first policy which led to the redesigned versions of their mainstream laptops including the Dell Inspiron and XPS. Dell introduced the 13-inch XPS M1330 which quickly became what was widely regarded the best laptop of 2007 because of its near-perfect combination of powerful performance, stylish design, and go-anywhere mobility.

And now, Dell follows up that gem with the XPS M1530. To put it as simply as possible, the new 15-inch XPS M1530 exudes class and screams sexiness. It isn't often that practicality and fine design meet in the middle, but I only needed to spend a little time with my XPS M1530 to be assured that Dell thought long and hard about every facet of its design. The overall build quality and finishings are top class.

The cover is manufactured using micro satin paint that ensures that the M1530 feels as good as it looks, with a wonderfully tactile, silky-smooth finish

Very sturdy hinges yet flipping the lid feels real smooth

Brushed aluminium chassis. Very classy. The XPS M1530 weighs only 2.6kgs and is light for a 15.4" laptop.

The keyboard is firm with virtually no flex and the keys have excellent travel and cushion. The XPS M1530 is really quite a pleasure to type on.

The speakers. No sound distortion even when turned up to maximum. No subwoofer included though.

The touch-sensitive media buttons are waaaaaaaaaaay cool. When pressed, they emit a bluish neon-like glow which slowly fades away.

The touchpad is highly customisable. It even has a scrollpad which acts like a mouse scroll wheel. And the touchpad extremely accurate as well when tweaked to your preference. I tried a couple of rounds of Unreal Tournament and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare using the touchpad and I could still own noobs. Well its nothing compared to the ownage that can be achieved with a Razer Deathadder but its good enough.

VERY sexy screen. The screen has a native resolution of 1280 x 800. The viewing angles are great but the screen is a bit too glossy so using the laptop in very bright daylight may pose a slight problem. The display is powered by a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics card which uses high performance GDDR3 memory instead of the more common DDR2.

Unfortunately though, there's one rubber pad on the battery pack. This only becomes a problem when you disconnect the battery from the laptop as the laptop will have one less rubber pad supporting it. Very very very slight decrease in stability when the battery is removed.

Very practical cable management system. Like I said, Dell thought of everything.

The fingerprint reader. Disappointing. It takes a couple of tries each time I use it to get it right. Typing my own passwords are faster then trying to get my fingerprint read by the reader
correctly.
Edit: I have finally gotten the hang of using the fingerprint reader. Works like a charm.

Port-wise, the XPS is very well equipped. It even has TWO microphone jacks.

The built-in card reader. Includes a plastic SD-sized card to prevent dust entry when the reader is not in use.

DC power jack, two USB ports, VGA out, Ethernet/LAN, HDMI and Firewire

Lock slot, S-Video out, USB Port and slot loading optical drive

WiFi catcher, WiFi on/off switch and ExpressCard slot

The slot loading dual layer optical drive is way cool. It is slightly noisier than your average tray loading drive however.

Dell even included a media remote control which fits in the ExpressCard slot

The media remote control can be used for a variety of uses including scrolling between folders, browsing the Internet and even operating Windows Media Player

The XPS also comes bundled with a pair of Creative EP-630 Noise Isolation Earphones!

The only major problem the XPS has is that the upper left corner of the laptop tends to get hot when playing games such as Crysis or Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for extended periods of time. I strongly suggest you pick up a good notebook cooler to prolong the lifespan of your hardware.

My pick: The Cooler Master Notepal Infinite

Surface is made of aluminium to aid heat loss from the laptop. Using this notebook cooler actually improves the ergonomics of the laptop as the back of the cooler is thicker than the front so the keyboard is no longer flat but rather tilted towards you at a more comfortable typing angle.

Variable fan speed and an additional USB port

The Start/Stop button. The best thing about this notebook cooler is that it sucks hot air from the laptop instead of blowing air at the laptop. The hot air leaves the cooler via the exhaust below the Start/Stop button which is at the back of the cooler unlike conventional coolers which have their exhausts at the bottom of the coolers. This design allows me to use my laptop on my bed without worrying about excessive heat problems.

Final Verdict

The Dell XPS M1530 is an extremely sexy and compact multimedia notebook with first-class performance but not without its minor weaknesses. Don't let the slim design and relatively light heft fool you. This XPS is one powerful gaming machine with an impressive feature set for work and play.
