Ich hoffe ja immer noch, dass das eine großartige Satire ist. Aber der Mann und sein neues Unternehmen Utopia – Slums 2.0, City Slums Strategies und SLUMLabs – scheinen das ernst zu meinen. Der Neoliberalismus macht vor nichts halt und Design Thinking bietet das passende Vokabular.

No matter how accessible use of the social web’s tools may become, ownership of the underlying infrastructure of these platforms sits not in the hands of its users, but in the hands of companies whose interests lie in extracting value from users’ productivity.

Gilt genauso für andere Plattformen mit vielfältigen Subkulturen (Bsp. Tumblr). Ich frage mich allerdings, ob das nicht eine eher nostalgische Sicht auf diese Themen ist und die (häufig jüngeren) Gruppen nicht sehr bewusst mit dieser Kommerzialisierung ihres persönlichen Ausdrucks umgehen bzw. es einfach Teil dessen ist. So nach der Art „Don’t own the means, infiltrate them.“

Die große Story am Wochenende zum Thema Arbeitskultur kam von der NY Times und beleuchtete die Gepflogenheiten bei Amazon. Mich haben vor allem einmal mehr die Reaktionen fasziniert, weil sich an ihnen gut die unterschiedlichen Ethiken im Umgang mit Angestellten und Mitarbeitern ablesen lassen.

Leider wenig überraschend ist es einmal mehr Silicon Valley, dass sich geradezu wundert, was denn das Problem mit den in den Artikel aufgezeigtem Verhalten wäre.

Auch diese Verteidigung eines Amazonmanagers zeigt eher eine kognitive Dissonanz zwischen seiner eigenen Wahrnehmung und der Möglichkeit, dass andere das ganz anders erleben.

Das Ganze wird von Amazon-Chef Bezos auf die Spitze getrieben, wenn er in einer Mitarbeiter-Memo zu dem Artikel schreibt:

The article doesn’t describe the Amazon I know…

Entweder weiß Bezos nicht, was in seinem Unternehmen vorgeht oder behauptet das zumindest. Für einen Micromanager wie ihn ist das aber eher unwahrscheinlich. Ich glaube eher, dass es wie ein kognitiver Schock für ihn ist, dass die Arbeitskultur, die er geschaffen hat, so interpretiert werden kann, wie es die NY Times macht. Diese Unfähigkeit sich vorzustellen, was ihr Vorgehen für Konsequenzen für Menschen außerhalb ihrer Blase haben könnte, gehört zu den Kernproblemen, die ich mit Silicon Valley und einem Großteil der Startup-Szene habe.

Laurie Penny argumentiert im New Statesman, dass nicht Immigration unser Problem ist, sondern der Faschismus, der mit dem Feindbild ‚Flüchtling‘ bewusst gefördert wird.

Lieber Politiker: Worauf wartest Du heute? Dein Schweigen ist unerträglich laut. Was muss noch passieren, bis Du etwas sagst?

Dementsprechend wütend ist Friedemann Karig und fordert die deutschen Politiker auf, endlich den Mund aufzumachen.

Welche Gefahren stecken für Dich in „On demand“ bzw. „Sharing Economy“?

Die Gefahren dieser „On-Demand-Economy“ erkennt man recht einfach, wenn man schaut, warum z. B. Uber-Fahrer streiken. Fangen wir mal mit dem bereits erwähnten Punkt an, was passiert, wenn der Chef plötzlich kein Mensch sondern eine App bzw. ein Algorithmus ist. Keine Diskussionen oder Erklärungen mehr. Der Algorithmus beauftragt, prüft, belohnt oder bestraft. Das kann schnell kritisch werden, wenn von der Qualität des Algorithmuses das Einkommen abhängt.

Ein zweite Gefahr hat Simon Head in seinem Buch „Mindless. Why Smart Machines are Making Dumber Humans“ als „Corporate Panopticon“ bezeichnet: das konstante Überwachen des Arbeiters durch die App oder andere Sensoren. Dabei liegt das Problem insbesondere in der Einseitigkeit dieser Beziehung. Der Arbeiter wird konstant überwacht, während er keinerlei Einsicht in die Funktionsweise des Algorithmuses und des Verhaltens der Plattformbetreiber hat.

All diese Punkte sind auch nicht verhandelbar, weil in der „On-Demand-Economy“ Nutzungsbedingungen bisherige Arbeitsverträge ersetzen. Es gibt keine Verhandlungen, man kann nur zustimmen oder nicht mitmachen. Es gibt für die Arbeiter keine Absicherung, keine Weiterentwicklung und auch keine Versicherung. Sie fungieren wie Angestellte, haben aber Verpflichtungen wie Selbstständige. Alle Verantwortung wird auf sie abgewälzt.

Keller Easterling, deren Buch Extrastatecraft so etwas wie die Bibel für Stacktivists und Infrastruktur-Hipster ist, hat für die aktuelle Ausgabe des e-flux Journals ein so dichtes Essay geschrieben, dass es mir schwer fällt, bestimmte Highlights und Zitate auszuwählen.

What if there is no one and the many, but only the many? What if there is no quest for an elementary particle or a Turing-complete platform? What if there is no real desire for liberalism but rather a curiosity about maintaining individual rights through counterbalancing obligation—a fascination not with freedom but with friction? What if there is no primitive separation of mind and body?

In IIRS (kurz für information in real space) streift sie eine Fülle von Themen, immer aus der Perspektive von Architektur, Infrastruktur und Informationen im Raum. Ein Text, den ich mit Sicherheit noch einige Mal lesen werde.

The great virtue of the bacon, egg and cheese on a roll, or its variations, is in what it doesn’t do. It doesn’t divide New Yorkers by class, income or neighborhood. It doesn’t seek publicity. It doesn’t convey status or bragging rights. It just conveys nutrition and, if you need it, settles your nerves. It is a secret handshake that New Yorkers exchange, not with one another, but with the city.

Graeber argues (perhaps not explicitly) that space travel was a symbol of the goals and dreams of the Soviet Union, and here I will argue that transhumanism is a symbol of the goals and dreams of the resultant bureaucratic capitalist order that replaced it.

By accepting this narrative of progress uncritically, imagining that technological change equals historic human betterment, many in Silicon Valley excuse themselves from moral reflection.

Ironically, with no common ground left but the tools of disenchantment, we have enchanted those tools.

Dabei zeigt er auf, wie beginnend mit der Aufklärung viele Aspekte verloren gegangen sind, die Identität stiften waren und so häufig der Fortschritt selbst bei vielen Persönlichkeiten insbesondere in Silicon Valley als einziger Kompass übrig geblieben ist.

Lauren Smiley schaut sich den aktuellen Trend der Liefer- und Haushaltshilfen-Startups an und spricht mit Nutzern, Startups und den neuen „Bediensteten“: The Shut-In Economy.

the on-demand world isn’t about sharing at all. It’s about being served. This is an economy of shut-ins.

Mit ihren Beobachtungen greift sie im Prinzip nahtlos in die Kritiken von #5 und #6.

The SherpaVentures report didn’t mention shut-ins. It did, however, point out that grocery delivery has taken off massively in hyper-dense developing countries, where huge income disparities allow upper-middle-class citizens to turn the rest of the workforce into their personal delivery network.

In seinem Essay Honeywell, I’m Home! The Internet of Things and the New Domestic Landscape betrachtet Justin McGuirk IoT aus der Architekturperspektive.

Airbnb is what we have instead of state-subsidized affordable housing, and it is leading to the wholesale commodification of domestic space.

Diesem Punkt begegne ich in Diskussionen um die Sharing Economy (die McGuirk korrekterweise als „digital renting economy“ bezeichnet). Es wird gerne übersehen, dass das zur Verfügung stellen von Dienstleistungen im privaten Sektor gerne als Ausrede für Tatenlosigkeit im öffentlichen Sektor verwendet wird. Das gilt in ähnlicher weise auch für das Wohnen, wo die Architektur ihre Verantwortung vernachlässigt hat und die Technologieunternehmen die Führung übernehmen.

Architecture, it seems, has given up its dreams of imagining how we might live, and so into that void technology is rushing. That tired old trope of “the house of the future” has been replaced by what is now called the “smart home.” The smart home is the network’s great white hope for ubiquitous connectivity.

McGuirk schaut sich dann die aktuellen Muster von IoT für die Entwicklung des „Smart Homes“ an und behandelt dabei Themen wie Privatsphäre, den Verlust des Schutzraums Wohnung, Überwachung und konstante Datenproduktion.

The fact that insurance, rather than advertising, is being touted as “the native business model” for the internet of things suggests that control may happen through financial penalties.

Versicherungen als primäres Geschäftsmodell gilt dabei genauso für das Smart Home wie für die Selbstvermessung (Quantified Self).

Zum Schluss zieht er dann noch den Zoom auf und kommt auf Infrastruktur zu sprechen.

Und auch hier sieht er die Gefahr in dem Transfer von Macht und Kontrolle vom öffentlichen zum privaten Sektor.

Unter dem Titel ‚The Future of Loneliness‘ hat Olivia Laing ein großartiges Essay im Guardian veröffentlicht.

According to research carried out over the past decade at the University of Chicago, the feeling of loneliness triggers what psychologists call hypervigilance for social threat. In this state, which is entered into unknowingly, the individual becomes hyperalert to rejection, growing increasingly inclined to perceive social interactions as tinged with hostility or scorn. The result is a vicious circle of withdrawal, in which the lonely person becomes increasingly suspicious, intensifying their sense of isolation.

Sie beschäftigt sich damit, wie das Internet für sie früher ein probates Gegenmittel gegen Einsamkeit war. Durch Überwachung und eine zunehmend harsche Diskussionskultur hat sich das deutlich geändert.

This growing entanglement of the corporate and social, this creeping sense of being tracked by invisible eyes, demands an increasing sophistication about what is said and where. The possibility of virulent judgment and rejection induces precisely the kind of hypervigilance and withdrawal that increases loneliness.

Sie schaut dann auf die Medienkunst der letzten 20 Jahre, um neue Ansätze und Auslegungen zu finden, wohin wir mit diesem Thema steuern. Dabei geht es aus ihrer Sicht immer mehr um Identität und die Auflösung selbiger.

It is tempting to suggest that this might even be a futuristic solution to loneliness: dissolving identity, erasing the burdensome, boundaried individual altogether.

Kann es sein, dass wir dazu tendieren zu lachen, wenn wir nicht wissen, wie wir sonst reagieren sollen? Wahrscheinlich produziert ein Thema wie die Ethik der Algorithmen besonders viele solcher Momente, weil wir einfach noch keinen Weg gefunden haben, die Erkenntnisse zu verarbeiten.

Tufecki hat kurz die großartige Forschungsarbeit von Natasha Dow Schüll erwähnt, die in Las Vegas untersucht hat, wie Casinos auf den Flow-Zustand der Spieler optimieren. Das Problem der „Vermenschlichung der Maschinen“ habe ich ja neulich schon mal angeschnitten. Gerade im Kontext der technologiebedingten Arbeitslosigkeit begegnet es mir immer wieder. Das Problem ist aber nicht nur, dass wir die Maschinen vermenschlichen und dabei gerne die Menschen hinter den Maschinen übersehen. Vielmehr sorgen Entwicklungen wie Machine Learning dafür, dass wir in der Tat nicht mehr genau verstehen wie Maschinen Entscheidungen fällen. Zumindest soweit ich das gerade verstehe. Deswegen braucht es vielleicht so etwas wie Algorithmus Ethnologie.

p>Es war wirklich faszinierend zu sehen, wie die Qualität der Diskussion schwankte, je nachdem wie konkret oder abstrakt sie sich zu den konkreten technologischen Details von Algorithmen und Machine Learning bewegte. Kein Wunder, dass sich unsere Gesellschaft so schwer damit tut, diese Themen zu greifen. Gleichzeitig gibt es aber keine Alternative. Das hat dieses Symposium gut gezeigt. Zutiefst technologielastige Themen wie Algorithmen gehören von ihrer Relevanz in die Mitte der gesellschaftlichen Diskussion.

Mein Fazit: Als nächstes die Details von Machine Learning deutlich besser verstehen.

It’s the end of fashion as we know it.

Und wenn Li Edelkoort das sagt, dann hört man besser zu. Ich kenne keine Fashion Forecasterin mit einem feineren Gefühl für Trends und Entwicklungen.

Edelkoort listed a number of reasons for the crisis in fashion, starting with education, where young designers are taught to emulate the famous names. „We still educate our young people to become catwalk designers; unique individuals,“ she said, „whereas this society is now about exchange and the new economy and working together in teams and groups.“ Other issues affecting the industry include a loss of competence in textile design, the failure to address sweatshop conditions at clothing factories; and the cosy relationships between fashion houses and magazines and bloggers, which ties editorial coverage to advertising budgets.

Sie schneidet die Beziehung zwischen den Modehäusern und der Modepresse/den Modebloggern nur kurz an. Aber mir scheint, dass auch hier Fashion mal wieder ganz vorne dabei ist, was die Weiterentwicklung von Marketingmaßnahmen an geht, und das nicht in eine positive Richtung. Vielmehr scheinen sich die Feedbackschleifen zwischen den Marken und den Medien so schnell zu drehen, dass das ganze System irgendwann aus der Rotation springt. Man kann nicht mehr erkennen, was gekauft, was gesponsert, was irgendwie sonst gedealt und was tatsächlich ehrliche Berichterstattung und Analyse ist. Und ich glaube sogar, dass es die Protagonisten selbst nicht mehr können. Irgendwann wird das ganze Konstrukt kollabieren, weil alles zu weißem Rauschen verschwommen ist. Mode ist da, wie gesagt, nur den anderen Bereichen voraus, in denen sich auch die Marketing- und Kommunikationsmechanismen von Social Media ständig beschleunigen und gegenseitig verstärken. Ich bin gespannt, was nach dem Kollaps kommt.

Bejamin Bratton nimmt in einem großartigen Artikel für den Opinionator Blog der NY Times die Vorstellung auseinander, dass Künstliche Intelligenz als höchstes Ziel haben muss, mehr wie wir Menschen zu werden:

Mich fasziniert seit längerem, wie unsere Diskussion um Roboter und KI vorrangig von Fiktion geprägt zu sein scheint. Bratton formuliert diese Beobachtung eloquent wie immer, geht dann aber deutlich tiefer, indem er sich die Reflexion ansieht, die unser Verhalten auf uns zurück wirft.

Ein Artikel über die Zukunft von autonomen Autos, der das Wiener Übereinkommen nicht erwähnt, ist aus meiner Sicht unglaubwürdig.

Artikel 8, Absatz 1:

Jedes Fahrzeug und miteinander verbundene Fahrzeuge müssen, wenn sie in Bewegung sind, einen Führer haben.

Neue Assistenzsysteme auf dem Weg zu autonomen – d.h. nicht mehr vom Fahrer gesteuerten – Auto werden auch weiterhin stark zunehmen. Aber der Zeitpunkt, an dem der Fahrer eines Autos nicht mehr in der Lage sein muss jederzeit einzugreifen zu können, ist noch sehr, sehr weit weg. Nicht aus technischen, sondern aus rechtlichen Gründen.

Justice for “Data Janitors” hat für mich einige wichtige Aspekte zusammen gefasst, in welche Richtung sich das ganze Thema technologiebedingte Arbeitslosigkeit entwickelt. Wenn mein Sessionvorschlag angenommen wird, werde ich auf der rp15 einen Folgevortrag zu ‚Das Ende der Arbeit‘ halten.

Kernthese:

Maschinen machen uns nicht arbeitslos, sie werden unsere Chefs. Uns werden dann häufig nur noch die Jobs bleiben, für die sich die Maschinen zu schade oder wir einfach günstiger sind. Es wird Zeit für eine neue, digitale Arbeiterbewegung.

Since Amazon Mechanical Turk introduced automated task management on the web in 2005, there has been a rise of jobs controlled by software APIs. These employers include 99designs, Uber, TaskRabbit and HomeJoy. There is a growing disparity between workers who make the software (above the API) and those completing the tasks (below the API). Many jobs that can be parceled out via API will be vulnerable to robot automation, perhaps as soon as 2020.

Wenn also der Punkt, an dem ein Auto keinen „Fahrer“ mehr benötigen muss, noch in weiter Zukunft liegt (#1) und gleichzeitig mit den „jobs below the api“ (unfreiwillig) günstige menschliche Arbeitskraft verfügbar gemacht wird, könnte man spekulieren, dass Unternehmen wie Uber noch sehr, sehr lange auf menschliche Fahrer setzen werden. Einfach weil sie im Vergleich günstiger sind.

Varousfakis’ Essay How I became an erratic Marxist im Guardian ist aus vielen Gesichtspunkten bemerkenswert. Als jemand, der in seinem Leben bisher wenig Berührungspunkte mit Marx hatte, wird mir immer klarer, dass es diese Lücke zu füllen gilt, gerade auch aus meinem aktuellen Blickwinkel der Beschäftigung mit dem Thema ‚technologiebedingte Arbeitslosigkeit‘:

Capital can never win in its struggle to turn labour into an infinitely elastic, mechanised input, without destroying itself. That is what neither the neoliberals nor the Keynesians will ever grasp. “If the whole class of the wage-labourer were to be annihilated by machinery”, wrote Marx “how terrible that would be for capital, which, without wage-labour, ceases to be capital!”

Unter dem Begriff ‚Gig Economy‘ beschäftigt sich Sarah Kessler mit den „jobs below the api“ und hat dazu letztes Jahr sogar ein Eigenexperiment durchgeführt.

Nun hat sie sich die Probleme angesehen, die Arbeiter in diesem Bereich haben, die sich gegenüber den Plattformen und Auftraggebern Rechte erkämpfen wollen. Uber-Fahrer beginnen sich zu organisieren. Auftragnehmer bei Amazon’s Mechanical Turk starten Kampagnen usw.

Ich denke, dass eine neue Arbeitsform auch neue Konzepte von Arbeiterrechten braucht und die können wahrscheinlich auch nur mit neuen Wegen des Arbeitskampfes durchgesetzt werden. Ich bin nicht sicher, inwiefern die klassischen Gewerkschaften hier in der Lage sein werden, ihre Tradition beiseite zu lassen.

Noch weiter weg scheinen alternative Unternehmensmodelle für die Gig Economy. Aber deswegen nicht weniger spannend.

The only way for independent workers to really benefit from the platforms that use their labor, argues Janelle Orsi, a lawyer who specializes in sharing economy issues, is for them to own the platforms themselves, in what she calls a „freelancer-owned cooperative.“ Since these platforms would by definition treat workers better, she thinks they could challenge companies like Uber, Airbnb, and Homejoy by essentially stealing their workforces. „The companies themselves have very few assets,“ she says. „They don’t own cars, and they don’t own infrastructure, they don’t own hotels. They just own a software platform and a lot of clout. And if that clout goes away, then they just have software. And lots of people can create software.“

Etwas sehr vereinfacht. Aber wie gesagt: ein interessantes Szenario, weil eine Alternative zum aktuellen Zustand.

Als die Nachricht kam, dass Berlin über eine Bewerbung für die olympischen Spiele nachdenkt, hielt ich das für einen schlechten Scherz. Gerade erst hatte die Bevölkerung mit dem Votum zum Tempelhofer Feld klar gemacht, dass sie mit dem Kurs des Ausverkaufs öffentlichen Raums nicht einverstanden waren. In so einem Moment olympische Spiele ins Gespräch zu bringen – so zynisch kann doch keine Regierung sein. Ich habe mich getäuscht.

In diesen Tagen läuft die Kampagne „Wir wollen die Spiele“ für die Bewerbung Berlins an und man merkt direkt, dass die Regierung aus dem Tempelhof-Votum „gelernt“ hat. Gegen Olympia sein ist in ihren „Bürgerbeteiligungsformaten“ nicht vorgesehen. Für den Volksentscheid, zu der die Regierung gezwungen wurde, wurden die Bestimmungen für die Wahlberechtigten so eng wie nur irgend möglich (über 18, deutscher Pass) gesetzt. Allein, wenn man sich das Verhalten der Stadtregierung zum Thema Olympia ansieht, sollte man selbst als zum Thema neutral eingestellte Person misstrauisch werden. ¹

Für mich persönlich ist das Thema Olympia schon seit den Spielen in London 2012 durch. Damals habe ich zum ersten Mal im Detail verfolgt, was die Ausrichtung von olympischen Spielen für den öffentlichen Raum einer Stadt bedeutet.

Mit dem Erwerb einer Lizenz zur Ausrichtung der Spiele vom IOC tritt eine Stadtregierung gleichzeitig zahlreiche Rechte an das IOC und dessen Sponsoren ab. Öffentlicher Raum und persönliche Freiheitsrechte sind in der austragenden Stadt während der Spiele massiv eingeschränkt.

Diese beiden Artikel beschreiben das exemplarisch am Beispiel London 2012:

Brand Exclusion Zones sind Zonen um olympische Sportanlagen, in denen die Rechte von Menschen und Unternehmen zu Gunsten des IOC und der Sponsoren eingeschränkt werden.

The Brand Exclusion Zone is the newest form of urban demarcation, and can be used not only to affect signage and advertising, but also restrict personal freedom of choice. Within this context, the London 2012 Olympics represents one of the most radical restructuring of the rights of the city in London. The ‚canvas‘ of London will belong exclusively to the Olympic marquee brands.

In diesen Zonen bestimmt das IOC die Regeln. Polizei und Justiz des Landes werden zum exekutiven Organ des Komitees. Wer Kleidung mit dem Logo des Wettbewerbers des Sponsors trägt, muss diese abdecken oder die Zone verlassen. Wer Essen oder Getränke gekauft hat, die nicht von einem der Sponsoren sind, darf diese nicht mit in die Zone bringen usw. Und das sind nur die einfachen Unannehmlichkeiten, die mit einem Abtreten des öffentlichen Raums und der persönlichen Rechte einher gehen.

Für London 2012 gab es eine Liste von Begriffen (u.a. „London“, „2012“, „Spiele“), die niemals in Kombination z.B. in der Kommunikation von Unternehmen verwendet werden durften.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games does not stop there. To cover all eventualities, it warns the unwary that they can create an ‘unwarranted association’ without using forbidden words. They threaten anyone who infringes the exclusive deals of Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Adidas, Dow, Samsung, Visa and the games’ other multi-million-dollar sponsors in however oblique a manner. And not just with the normal damages in the civil courts. The state has granted the police powers under the criminal law to enter ‘land or premises’ and to ‘remove, destroy, conceal or erase any infringing article’.

Für mich ist die Entwicklung der olympischen Spiele ein gutes Beispiel, wie der Kapitalismus Organisation und Unternehmen dazu führt, diktatorische Tendenzen anzunehmen, (wahrscheinlich) ohne dass die Manager und Funktionäre das explizit vor hatten. Das IOC versucht die Interessen seiner Kunden, der Sponsoren, zu schützen und wird dabei immer totalitärer.

Sponsors should be able to garner good publicity from an event, and protect their investment, of course. But a free society should not allow them to occupy every possible avenue of commercial advantage as if they were dictators in a totalitarian state, rather than merchants in a democracy.

Das IOC ist mir relativ egal. Aber ich habe ein großes Problem mit einer Stadtregierung, der die Interessen von internationalen Konzernen und Organisationen, die keinen Cent in der Stadt lassen, wichtiger sind als die Rechte und Möglichkeiten der Bürger und Unternehmen, für die sie verantwortlich ist.

Ich möchte nicht, dass es in meiner Stadt öffentlichen Raum gibt, in dem, wenn auch nur für kurze Zeit, das Recht des IOC gilt und nicht mehr das Grundgesetz. Ich möchte, dass in meiner Stadt der einzige Maßstab für die Rechtmäßigkeit meiner Aussagen das Grundgesetz ist und nicht das IOC.

Ende Februar findet in Manchester wieder das FutureEverything Festival statt, zu dem auch ein großartiges Konferenzprogramm am 26. und 27.2. gehört. Die Liste der Sprecher enthält zahlreiche Namen, die Besuchern dieses Blogs oder Lesern meiner Empfehlungen auf Twitter keine unbekannten sein sollten. Insbesondere der Themenbereich Haunted Machines sieht vielversprechend aus. Deswegen haben Igor und ich uns nach längerer Zeit mal wieder dazu entschlossen, eine Firmenexkursion nach England zu machen.

Ende März findet dann die I-A-M Konferenz (kurz für Internet Age Media) in Barcelona statt. Die Organisatoren Lucy Rojas und Andres Colmenares kenne ich seit längerem. Ich bin sehr beeindruckt, was sie da am auf die Beine stellen sind und freue mich, dass ich ein bisschen unterstützen darf. Und Barcelona Ende März ist auf jeden Fall besser als Berlin Ende März.

Wie geht man mit der eigenen Unsicherheit vor dem Unbekannten um? Man kann sie verteufeln und gegen sie auf die Straße gehen. Oder man kann sich ihr bewusst stellen und dadurch das Unbekannte ein bisschen vertrauter und persönlicher machen.

Martin Gommel ist der Betreiber des Fotografie-Magazins Kwerfeldein und ein alter Freund. Als die Diskussion um Migration und Flüchtlinge in den letzten Wochen immer heftiger wurde, hat er sich ein Herz gefasst, seine Kamera gepackt und ist zum Flüchtlingscamp in Karlsruhe gegangen.

I wanted to see the faces to all that stuff that is in the news every day. I wanted to talk to actual people and wasn’t any longer satisfied with numbers that are thrown around so very often. 

Auf seinem Tumblr hält Martin seine Begegnungen mit den Flüchtlingen mit Porträts und sehr persönlichen Eindrücken fest. Das Ganze ist mehr Tagebuch als Aktivismus. Aber vielleicht macht gerade das die Aktion so stark.

Martin schließt jedes Porträt mit den Worten „Welcome to Germany“ ab. Dem kann ich mich nur anschließen.

1. I’ve learned the hard way that situations are always more complex than they may seem at first. It’s just so easy to get worked up by a tweet or a quick blog post. But like in this case, it helps to wait a bit and do some more research on the situation. Just like Helen Killer from regretsy did who found out that the artist complaining about getting ripped off by Urban Outfitters is definitely not the first one to “have the idea” for this kind of jewelry. And that might be something you want to know before you add to the retweet storm.

2. Do you think this shitstorm will hurt Urban Outfitters sale? Will it even make a small dent in their revenue? Do you think GAP felt the backlash against their logo relaunch in their registers? Or what about Nestlé and their Kitkat shitstorm? Did the sales drop?
   From everything I know, not from one of the companies that had to endure a social media shitstorm I have ever heard that it had substantially hurt their sales. I mean, I have a Kyptonite bike lock laying beside me while I write this. And they have been part of every social media deck as the bad example for years.

What I mean is, is what my buddy Matt talked about at Next11: what we mostly focus on with social media is in a lot of cases not what really matters for bigger brands. So before we all add the “Urban Outfitters”-case to our decks, let’s think twice and come up with something more relevant for our clients that talks about the difference between something hurting a brand and something hurting their sales and how to handle and plan for that.

In my opinion, Russell Davies’ talk about Buttons, Behavior, Robots and Toys was the best presentation of the whole conference. I follow the man’s output closely. But even I heard something new.

Andrew Zolty is co-founder of Breakfast NY, an agency in Brooklyn which is basically a tinkering shop but has received a huge amount of praise lately. Watch the video to see why.

Kevin Slavin is the founder of area/code, which he has sold to Zynga recently. His talk about algorithms will blow your mind. I’ve seen the talk before, but even hearing it for the second time took nothing away from the effect.

While we try to get a better understanding and a finer definition of what we do at Third Wave throughout the last weeks and months, I developed this growing fascination with change and our (as in humans) abbility to cope with it…or lack there of. So I’ve recently written out part of a presentation that dealt with the change we’re facing. So here’s how we (as in Third Wave) cope with change.

The open-data folks need to be speaking with the data-visualization people, the architects need to be listening to the mobility planners, the regulators need to understand the implications of new technical potentials…and all of them need to ground their work in the everyday urban experience of getting around and getting by.

I think, Adam nailed my vision for CoCities right there. My fascination about the future/networked/smart/whatever city right from the beginning, has always been the amount of possibly involved disciplins. Architects, sociologists, designers, city planners, politicians, all kind of developers (software, hardware), social workers, landscapers, retail etc.

There’s a mind-blowing potential to gain new perspective from people on the same topic but from a different discipline. I’ve always been fascinated by the possibilities of one disciplin having a problem or new challenge and another disciplin providing a unique solution by offering its own pattern for solving things. Like city planners adapting agile development and rapid prototyping to test new neighbourhood developments like, someone told me, it is happening in Copenhagen, for example.  

My hope for CoCities is that we can provide a platform for all these disciplines to come together, share their challenges and insights and create new and sustainable approaches/remixes/mashups that improve cities and living in them. Silo thinking kills kittens!

It was a much needed break after two super intense months. While the first three months of our business, starting in October, have been rather focussed on setting up the whole thing and organizing our CoCities conference, the business has been going crazy as of January 3rd. Agencies and clients have been calling almost non-stop and we already are turning down requests because we just can’t do it all. We expected February to be all about CoCities. But it was actually our most successful month with tons of paid client work. Nevertheless CoCities has been an great success with raving reviews wherever we look. We’re super happy with how it turned out. We had 320 guests (45% from outside Germany), 12 top-notch, international speakers for day 1, a great mix of events for day 2 (a screening of Utopia Lonndon, the first public showing of Immaterials, workshops on topics like design thinking) and an overall request to do it again next year.

So after 5 months of intense work with the new company and a great but exhausting conference, we needed a little time-out to digest. My head feels like it’s about to burst with impressions, inspiration and new trains of thoughts. So the annual global gathering of geeks at the SXSW Interactive festival in Austin seemed like the right kind of place to flee to from Berlin for a couple of days. And if you’re on route to the US, a stop in New York is a no-brainer for us. So we rented an apartment via AirBnB in the East Village, set up some low-key meetings and made sure we bring a well edited list of third wave coffee shops in NYC.

We been really fortunate with the people who have been willing so sit down with us. Most of them are right off the list of people who inspire me. Like our CoCities-keynote-speaker Adam Greenfield from Urbanscale who took some extra time to give us feedback about the conference and discussed its possible future with us. Like Kyle from PSFK, Mike and Sam from Undercurrent, Maria from Brain Pickings, people who have influenced me and the company I’m building.

People like these are also the reason why I’m really looking forward to SXSW. I don’t really care about the sessions. But SXSW is first and foremost a get-together of the digital world. Everybody is there. So I hopefully will be able to enhance the avatars in my Twitter timeline with a lot of personal encounters.

Visiting SXSW is also a special company thing for us. Igor and Peter have been there last year and this was were the thought of building something new was first born. So we’re going back one year later to celebrate what has come to life since then. This all feels darn good!

That Hammersley guy… Give him a stage or sit him in front of a camera or just buy him a beer, ask a question and get your mind blown. So this video was a no-brainer for Gabriel who has been on fire recently with his Future of Art conversation. 

You can’t help bu realise, that the next 10-to-40 years are going to be really strange. Totally strange. And… that rate of strangeness seems is going to get exponentially more strange. And the problem we have right now is the people that are in charge of this stuff don’t understand a) how strange it’s going to be, or b) the form of the strangeness itself.

Sami Niemelä has similar thoughts about the future of cities:

I was on a hunt for a fine “Full English” breakfast. This was a pretty decent contender at Graphic.

The one at the Hospital Club was tasty but nowhere near a “Full”.

Talking about the Hospital Club, I really like this version of a members club.

I sort of have a built in hopper, or I’ve acquired one, into which I toss every bit of novelty that I encounter when I’m not writing. It goes into the hopper, and then it just sort of cooks — it composts, or something. I pay absolutely no attention to it, until the day which, for some reason, it pops back out. When it pops back out, it’s been transfigured by somehow having melded itself with something that happened to be adjacent to it, and so  it’s kind of a made-up novelty.

For me, writing seems to be a muscle. Without doing it regularly, I feel I’ve lost my ability to express cogently complex ideas in interesting ways.
And, because I haven’t been regularly talking about the ideas that interest me, I’ve not given myself the time to reduce down those ideas into pithy, understandable statements.
Writing seems to be associated with my sense of pattern recognition. I’m missing the structures of abstraction it gives me, and the room for wiggly play I get while I do it.
