Pumpkins?!

I LOVE AUTUMN - even if Florida refuses to recognize it. Stupid 80+ degree weather.
I've been waiting to carve pumpkins because they will rot in 2 minutes in this heat! So, this weekend I'll be venturing out on the pumpkin carving path. I typically stick to the traditional cut-out style (note last year's pirate pumpkin below).

But I'm thinking this year I may *attempt* to do more of a 3D sculptural look. I can guarantee it won't be as awesome as these dudes, but who knows. It'll be fun to try at least.

Despite the fact that I've put off carving til the end of the month, pumpkins have been popping up all over our house! I've been making these too-cute-to-handle fabric pumpkins using this tutorial (originally found on designsponge). It's SUPER easy and they come out so damn cute!

Spectrum Video Wins Horror Film Contest!

My good friends over at Spectrum Video just WON the Chiller Channel's best short horror film contest for their movie "Outhouse" !! I am beyond excited for them. The short film will be aired nationwide on the Chiller Channel on Halloween night. It is all that is right with B-movie horror films - Disgustingly awesome. Congrats, Spectrum Video!

I will be going back to my homeland this weekend - good ol' Jersey! It'll be nice to see and feel some pretty fall weather at last!

Among the random adventures I will be having, I'm going to be.. a model? That's right ladies and gents. My best friend David Ayllon and I will be stepping out from behind our computers to in front of the camera to pose in all our lovestruck BFF glory. We'll be meeting up with the talented Natalia Pokrovskaya this weekend for a fun outdoor shoot. I could not be more excited!

Preview: The Social Network Series

After hearing the sampler EP from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for The Social Network soundtrack, I was immediately in the mood to start creating. The music is intoxicating - sounds that will drift your mind miles and miles away. So I decided to start a little personal project (because lately design/digital art has been strictly equated with "work," and I needed something that was just for me). I decided to pair a visual with each song, just creating as I played the song on loop. First up was "Pieces Form the Whole."

This piece definitely started in one place and then just grew a mind of its own and evolved as I worked on it. I'm really digging how this series is coming out, and can't wait to keep going (originally I was just going to tackle the 5 track EP, but let's see if I'm up to the full soundtrack challenge - 19 songs!). This is definitely one of those projects where the process means as much as the product.

Back to School Motivation?

Every store I went in this weekend was loaded up on back-to-school supplies. Confession: I used to LOVE back-to-school shopping - picking out all my geek supplies, bouquets of sharpened pencils... ('You've got Mail'... anyone? no? come on...)

Anyways, I decided to pick myself up 1 particular back-to-school item in hopes of motivating myself to get more creative. I've had countless sketchbooks throughout my life - all of them ending up half-filled, with tons of pages torn out for writing down addresses.

So I decided that I'd get myself a brand-spanking-new book. Clean slate. And I am going to fill every page - front and back. NO tearing out pages for useless information or destroying bad artwork.

Can I do it? I'd hope so - it's not exactly the most difficult task in the world.

Instead of a typical sketchbook, I opted for the classic marble composition notebook. (Traditional sketchbooks always intimidate me. I feel like I need to create these grand works of art, and when I don't, that's when half of my book ends up in the trash bin.)

So here's to completing a FULL sketchbook - possibly filled with crap, but hopefully some good ideas get mixed in at some point.

P.S. As much fun as back-to-school shopping was, I cannot even express the immense joy I feel in NEVER having to go back to school again. :-)

Stepping away from the computer

This past weekend was filled with crafty goodness. I always like stepping away from the computer and using my creativity elsewhere (and sprucing up our house in the process doesn't hurt!) I'm always looking for fun new projects I can do to add a little more interest to my surroundings.

Here's a little taste of what I was up to this weekend.

1. Kitty area - I love love love our cats, but hate hate HATE cat litter. So I decided to make a litter area for them so that it was out of site. Take a cheap tv stand from target, a couple of cushions, a pillow case, a small curtain rod, some string, and some construction paper and presto! Kitty area :-)

Toby seems to love it! He lays on the cushions and stares out into our backyard looking at tasty birds.

2. Silhouettes! - I've been wanting to hang up silhouettes around the house for a while now. I just love their simple look. And they look great in any room! So I searched around for some interesting ones, cleaned them up, printed them out, and painted them onto some thick paper. They seem to have invaded every room, so it's a good thing the Mr. likes them too. :-)

(Side note: I recreated these half empty/half full prints after finding them online and discovering that they had quickly sold out. When in doubt, make it yourself!)

3. Free art - I have a lot of paper sample books lying around my creative room (psst, they're free!), and a good amount of them have great pictures printed on the sample paper as an intro to each booklet. So, I just cut them right out of there and mounted them on some spare mat board I had. Simple, cheap, and quick art.

4. Pattern wall art - Another very simple project. For this, I just printed out some patterns that I liked and decoupaged them onto blank canvases with water and glue.

5. Tin lanterns! - Last, but certainly not least! This was my favorite project of the weekend. I got this idea from designsponge -->bookmark it! (originally from maggiemakes). I just used coffee and soup cans, froze water inside, and punched holes with a nail and hammer. I originally started with some of the templates off maggiemakes, but then I just ended up doing my own patterns on most of them. I LOVE how they came out! I think I'll just start saving cans from whatever we happen to buy so I can keep making more.
