I drive a Volvo. Do you know who works on Volvos? Nobody but Volvo dealerships. Do you know why? Because they are complicated, confusing and simply not the same as a 1975 Ford truck. 

Granted a 2026 Ford truck more resembles my Volvo under the hood than it does a 1975!Ford truck, but the basics of combustion engines haven’t changed in 200 plus years. 

This element of nuanced enhancement and evolution are expected and even appreciated in industrial, automotive, manufacturing, engineering and electronics not so much in the pillars and principles of character and leadership. One’s opinion should evolve - that’s called personal growth. The foundational principles of good leadership must remain steadfast. Otherwise, they are not principles.

Mistakes are made. Wrong choices have consequences. Bad ideas seem to multiply like bunny rabbits and spread faster than dandelions. When a little mercy, understanding, grace and forgiveness would go a long way, most people see the faltering of a leader as their opportunity to get ahead.

Trolls and Trojans both look for weaknesses to exploit. Can they sneak in through an open window to expose your vulnerability? Can they poke you in an emotional space and provoke an inappropriate response? Can they instigate or threaten harm to someone or something you are deeply invested in and then film you ‘overreacting’?

Often times, that’s all a troll needs. One opening, one unguarded moment, one slip of the tongue, one chance to tell a story, true or not which puts you in a bad light.

I hate that it’s true but it is. A leader must be constantly on guard. Be wise. There’s more than your reputation at stake.

One of the saddest things I see in society is the number of people suffering from their own comfort. Gary Brecka says “Aging is the relentless pursuit of comfort.” I coach leaders, trainers, speakers and many other coaches who are baffled by this human phenomena.

 In case you haven’t heard, each new iteration of artificial intelligence seems to suffer from more hallucinations. Ironically, the faster and more data inundated it gets, the more errors, omissions and gaslighting we humans experience. 

Funny thing to me is this - whilst some of the conjecture of old books has been debunked, theories disproven and methods reconsidered, much of it is not. In fact it seems many details and understandings were better founded, better researched and better articulated before computer scientists inserted their ease of access to information. 

I know there are entire books of manipulation and pseudoscience - that’s why we must read more than one book, author or point of view to support accuracy and foundational truth.

As a leader, I believe your greatest advantage in the coming decade is the value of your humanity.

Coaching a team of people can be difficult. It’s more difficult to coach a team of people when the leader of that team is not coachable. Perhaps they have it all figured out.  Perhaps they are unwilling to be lead by new ideas, new feelings, new beliefs. Perhaps they have blind spots, blame shifting and a bad attitude as common practice in their daily execution.

Too often leaders fail because they do not realize they are drifting into the deep end. Generally speaking these are leaders young in age. However, it can happen to leaders new to an industry, a role or a process. Changes in policies internally or laws externally can become a veritable quagmire. 

All the money expended, team members deployed and strategies employed are not enough. The solution still requires something of the leader themselves.

On occasion all the effort one can muster, all the learning one can pursue, all the attention one can give to a problem just won’t satisfy the hounds of change. 

Something personal, something sacrificial, something not yet written in the text books must be considered. It’s time to think outside the box and do the unimaginable. You’re gonna need thinking time for this and a brainstorm collaboration off the regular path.

Like attracts like except in magnetic fields. Ironically it is the magnetism in a person born with natural abilities which allows and affords for them to become leaders even if they never planned too. 

Leadership tends to fall to those who are busy pursuing something they are deeply passionate about. For some that passion is the skill, art and motivation of leadership itself. For others, they never desired to be a role model. They never longed to have others trust in them or follow their advice but their success in their own passionate pursuits created a wake of sorts.

Every directive of policy, procedure and process begins in the imagination of those responsible for the results. Many times a polos process sounds great around the conference table, looks good to the liability protection squad, (risk mitigation) and feels like a reasonable thinking those who must execute said policy. Unfortunately, like Napoleon said, “A battle plan will not survive more than 15 minutes once you engage the enemy.” Similarly, Mike Tyson reminded us: “Everyone’s a tough guy until he gets punched in the face.”  

The one place where the imagination of the leader is a must win battle, is the culture war. This war is fought one well articulated idea at a time. The attitude expressed, impressed and imposed on the team by the recognized influencers will become the culture. Things true in a family, in a company, in a community and in a nation. 

Choose the culture you wish to live in. Then get busy with the inception of the language of that culture.

The level of influence garnered by bots is unfathomable. When 50%+ of all social media accounts are NPC or non human entities we must ask some serious questions. 

Who is actually leading us? Where are we being lead?  By “we” I mean society at large, more specifically humankind, more specifically people susceptible to coercion, manipulation and crude persuasion. As the rhetoric heats up and the propaganda continues, the crowds of under informed, emotionally motivated, politically provoked bipeds represent a genuine threat to survival. 

At risk is civil society. Hanging in the balance is accountability. Weighing on the minds of the everyday parent is the wellbeing of their offspring, their financial goals and their version of the American dream. 

It’s one thing to consider bot farms driven by human interaction, influencers who can be held accountable or responsible. It’s a whole other threat level to consider AI bots proselytizing their own inventions of civilization. Or as the bugs bunny meme articulates “You are the carbon they seek to eliminate.”

As leaders we must guard and defend the authority and integrity of human wisdom beyond the accumulation and exploitation of data.

TEXANS UNITING FOR REFORM & FREEDOM (TURF)
Defending citizens’ concerns about toll roads & eminent domain abuse

What is TURF?
Texans Uniting for Reform and Freedom (TURF) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to educate the public on our government’s new shift to tolling using controversial financing methods called public-private partnerships (called Comprehensive Development Agreements or CDAs in Texas), the tolling of existing corridors, and the eminent domain abuse inherent in these plans (confiscating private land to give to a private company for commercial gain). TURF also educated the public about the Trans Texas Corridor (TTC), the first of the planned NAFTA Superhighways, and eventually helped pass a complete repeal of the TTC from state statute in 2011. TURF also helped secure a moratorium & sunset of controversial public private partnership road contracts in 2007 and was also the first grassroots group to oppose the use of stimulus money for toll roads in 2009, which garnered national coverage by the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Fox News.
TURF is a grassroots group of Texans asking for reforms through accountability and good public policy as well as promoting non-toll, sensible transportation solutions. TURF remains committed to ending eminent domain abuse and works tirelessly to secure a pro-freedom, pro-taxpayer, fiscally solvent, freely-accessible public road policy for all Texans.

ADVANCE CAMP TEXAS

Advance Camp is a day camp held every month for fatherless young men (6th – 12th grade) to come and learn practical skills that dad could have, would have, should have taught him if he was involved in his life. In addition to building a strong foundation through these practical skills, the dedicated mentors help teach them how to be rooted and established in Christ. The mentors build solid and lasting relationships with these young men, and in many ways are a father figure that they are looking for. Advance Camp is completely free to the young men that attend and their families thanks to generous donors. It is a truly incredible experience for everyone involved.
