I’m happy to release jMemorize 1.3.0! Thanks a lot to everybody that has downloaded the beta and provided bug reports. The most severe bug caused the user interface to be incorrectly painted on certain Linux systems (those that used the Java Metal look’n'feel, if you want to know exactly). This bug among with some others annoyances has been fixed. You can see the exact changelog for more details.

Please keep in mind that the lesson format has slightly changed. You won’t be able to load compressed files that you have saved with the new version in old jMemorize versions and you need to have at least Java 1.5 to run jMemorize now. This version still features some slightly out dated translations. I hope to fix those for the next version.

You can download the new version from our download page and if you like jMemorize, please consider a donation using the paypal button.

I’m proud to announce that the beta for jMemorize 1.3.0 is out! To me this easily is the most important release yet. This version finally features image support - probably the single most requested feature from the beginning. It also adds a lot more font customization options, redefined learning behavior, usability improvements and much more. Please see the changelog for all details. Obviously I’ve been working with this version for a couple a weeks already and honestly I couldn’t imagine going back to version 1.2.3 anymore.

Although jMemorize automatically makes backups of your lesson files when saving, I recommend you to make a backup of your lesson yourself, before playing around with the new version. Of course I’ve made my best effort not to introduce any new bugs, but there have been a lot of internal changes, so you never know. This version also has some outdated translations, which I hope to fix for the final release. Please note that the lesson compression has slightly changed. You won’t be able to load compressed files that you have saved with the new version in old jMemorize versions and you need to have at least Java 1.5 to run jMemorize now.

Thanks a lot to all contributors, being it by providing translations, donations or simply feedback! Go and grab your copy at the download page and let me know what you think!

Happy (late) new year everybody! Since jMemorize 1.3.0 is almost done, I thought I’d fill you in one some of the new features. In this post I’m going to present you the new card side options.

First of all, you can now specify the horizontal alignment of fonts (left, right, centered) and also vertically center text. For cards with little amount of text this greatly improves readability.

The brand new side selection bar allows you to select the currently visible card sides. You can choose from the following modes: front side + flip side (the way previous jMemorize versions always displayed the card), only front side and only flip side. In the second screen shot you can see how only the flip side is shown.

Probably most importantly you can now attach an arbitrary number of images to every card side. When adding an image a small image tool bar appears at the bottom of the card side and allows you to switch the image and choose between the three display modes: text + image, only text and only image. You can see the text + image mode in the first screen shot. The second screen shot shows the image only mode.

Of course all of these feature also work during learning. For example you can now see the answer side in full size if you prefer that to the current shared question/answer layout.

These are just some of the bigger new features of jMemorize 1.3.0. I hope you like them. By the way, the awesome Eifel tower image was shot by Michel Kuik.

Cheers,
Riad

Just by today and yesterday I’ve received three Spanish translations for jMemorize. Our little application was downloaded over 2000 times over the last three days. On one hand I obviously feel happy about this boost of popularity in Spain. On the other hand I feel bad for everybody that invested work in a translation that I won’t be able to use. So I thought it would be a good time to announce all translations that will be available in the upcoming jMemorize 1.3.0 version:

Simplified Chinese (by Tianyi Cui)

Turkish (by Ali Baser and Mert Nuhoglu)

Swedish (by Magnus Bodin)

Portuguese (by Ney)

Polish (by Tomek Pedzimaz and Radek Ostrowski)

Norwegian (by Haakon Meland Eriksen)

Dutch (by Filip Tack and Sander van Rijnswou)

Japanese (by Eberhard Herzog)

French (by MILLE.ca)

Español (by René Maya)

Esperanto (by Kristjan Schmidt)

English (by Riad Djemili)

German (by Riad Djemili)

Danish (by Adam Ehlers Nyholm Thomsen)

Czech (by Lukas Rypl)

Feel free to fill the gaps and provide translations for languages that we don’t have so far!

You can finally change the category of a card, directly from inside the edit window.. and yes, even while being in a learn session.

The card text now supports simple text formatting like bold, italic, underlined, superscript (vertically raised) and subscript (vertically lowered) text.

The unhandy properties tab is replaced by a new collapsible header bar at the top of the edit window. In collapsed form you can check the current deck and expiration date with a quick glance. Expanded it shows you all the detailed information that you’re used to.

Every card now also stores it’s modification date, which can be seen in the card header bar or be used as a column in the card table.

I hope you like the new features. We’re aiming for an release by the end of this month.
