Kodachrome is a brand name for a non-substantive, color reversal film introduced by Eastman Kodak in 1935. It was one of the first successful color materials and was used for both cinematography and still photography. Because of its complex processing requirements, the film was sold process-paid in the United States until 1954 when a legal ruling prohibited this. Elsewhere, this arrangement continued. Kodachrome was the subject of a Paul Simon song and a US state park was named after it. For many years it was used for professional color photography, especially for images intended for publication in print media. Because of the uptake of alternative photographic materials, its complex processing requirements, and the widespread transition to digital photography, Kodachrome lost its market share, its manufacturing was discontinued in 2009 and its processing ended in 2010.(Wikipedia)

LensBaby photography

Lensbaby is a line of camera lenses for SLR cameras that combine a simple lens with a bellows or ball and socket mechanism for use in special-effect photography. A lensbaby can give effects normally associated with view cameras. The lenses are popular with photographers for the creative possibilities of the selective focus and bokeh effects. Lensbabys can be used on cameras that accept interchangeable lenses, mainly of the 35 mm film SLR or digital SLR formats. The focal length of the Lensbaby is approximately 50 mm, making it a normal lens in 35 mm format. Lensbabys have no electronic components, disabling auto-focus when mounted on modern cameras. The use of auto-focus is further undermined by the spherical aberration in the lens. In most cases Lensbabys require aperture priority or fully manual mode. The Lensbaby can also be used for infrared photography, but don’t include an index mark for infrared photography.(Wikipedia)

Getting the correct lens for your camera is extremely important. If you are a professional photographer or an enthusiast, who is very particular about the quality of the photos you take, then you have to do a lot of research before buying a camera lens. Canon has come up with the latest version of one of its lenses, Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM. This new version of the old EF 70-200/2.8L IS USM has faster AF, 5th UD element, closer functioning and improved Image Stabilization. This lens review discusses details of Canon’s new product.

This lens uses both its internal focusing and external zooming, which means that the front side of the lens does need to rotate. The focus limiter switch allows operations to be set from 1.5-2.5m to infinity. This reduces the search time required in focusing by half a second. For professional photographers, this limited time is essential. Canon has stated that the camera is good for 4 stops stabilization.

Like all Canon products, the quality of the lens is superior, using only the best manufacturing materials. The barrel is metallic and movement of the lens is as smooth as can be. The greatest and relatively high priority aspect of this lens is that it is weather resistant. Be it dust or moisture, the gaskets and O-rings prevent them from getting inside the lens. It is not water-proof, but can work well in light to moderate rain.

Specification of Canon EF 70-200/2.8L IS II USM

Weight: 3.28lb (1.49kg)

Dimensions: Approx. 3.5×7.8” (8.89×19.81cm)

Focal Length: 70-200 mm

Compatibility: 35mm/Full-Frame Digital Sensor, Canon (APS-C)

Aperture: Maximum: f/2.8 Minimum: f/32

Angle of View: 34-12

Minimum Focus Distance: 3094ft

Filter thread: 77mm

Camera Mount: Canon EF

Operation of the Lens

The first thing to note is the operation of the lens. Canon EF 70-200/2.8L IS USM is a particularly quiet camera. The focus is great because it is efficient and very accurate. The balance of the camera, with its weight, is well balanced. The IS system works well and allows you to capture at least 70% shots that are just right. It can be called a state of the art lens, because the focus, zoom, accuracy and overall functioning of the lens are up to the mark.

Optical Performance of the Lens

When it comes to the performance of this lens, Canon gives some of the best results imaginable. Even at 35mm frame, the photo is sharp, clear and as crisp as can be expected. Some of the sharpness around the edges is lost when stopping down, but overall edge quality is good. Another advantage is that images remain clear with the lens wide open. Best results can be gained with the lens stopped down to f8 or f11.

There is some full frame distortion that can be corrected with DPP when RAW images are captured. The same is the case with vignetting and CA, so this makes it an almost invisible issue.

The lens is perfect for both indoor and outdoor shots, especially sporting events.
