KAT-TUN 1st Single

Since I've been updating all about female singers, I guess it's time to let the guys shine. I'll start with this ever popular idol boy band from Japan, KAT-TUN formed under Johnny's Entertainment.

This single totally rocks. I love every single song they have in this single to bits. 'Real Face' is a really powerful song with strong beat and rock genre. It's a song which has its pace accelerating as it goes by.

'GLORIA' is more towards the pop side with fast tempo. You are sure to like it if you like 'Real Face'. 'Will Be All Right' is my favorite track in this single. It has a combination of pop, rock and hip-hop all in one song! Rock verses, hip-hop pre-chorus, pop chorus. And it really blends well, I'm telling you. Unique song!

Rocking single! You definitely ought to have this single!! High recommendation from me :)

Erika 2nd Single

Despite the exceptionally weird and ugly album cover, 'Destination Nowhere' is quite a nice song actually. I guess this is where you put the saying 'Don't judge a book by its cover' into practice. This song is a medium-paced song with great vocals.

'ESCAPE', like 'Fantasy' in her previous single, is a song which will never be in my playlist. Techno-stylish digitalized voice is a big no-no to me. But if I were to compare this with 'Fantasy', I'd have to say that this is slightly on the better side. It's not as monotonous as the latter.

I usually despise remix versions of songs. So the remixed version of 'FREE' is not an exception. I'd say to go for the studio version.

This single is no better than the previous single but 'Destination Nowhere' is my favorite Erika song in these 2 singles. What say you? :)

Erika 1st Single

Sawajiri Erika's (沢尻エリカ) 1st single under her name, after the success of her previous single under her alias, Kaoru Amane for the Jdrama 'taiyou no uta' (タイヨウのうた). This single actually peaked #1 in the Oricon Singles charts on the day of its release, and it sustained its spot for the weekly charts.

'FREE' is quite a nice song sounding like pop rock. I believe Erika's voice actually improved since her previous single. Must have underwent loads of training since then *chuckles*. It's either that, or the noisy background music actually covered for her mistakes.

I don't quite like 'Fantasy'. Anything which sounds techno style is out of my playlist. And this song is one of them. It's too techno style, Erika's voice was digitalized throughout the whole song. I wonder, is that a tactic to cover for her not-so-professional voice? Another thing is that I can't actually distinguish between the verses and chorus. Monotonous song, if you ask me.

'Time to go home' also is more towards the pop rock genre so it's a green light for me. But I still find 'FREE' a little better than this song, though. Yet again, perhaps it's just a personal preference thing.

Definitely an improvement from Erika so you guys can give it a try if you're a fan of hers or if you liked her previous single :)

Since I mentioned Sawajiri Erika (沢尻エリカ) in my previous posts, I now present to you Erika's debut single under her alias in music industry, Kaoru Amane. I must say, Erika's first step into the music industry was a really huge leap, after starring in the Summer 2006 J-drama under the same title, taiyou no uta (タイヨウのうた). It topped the Oricon singles, positioning #1 for the daily, weekly AND monthly charts. It went into the #10 spot for the yearly Oricon singles chart, which was definitely a good start for a debut single, coming from someone who had no background in music.

Moving on to the review, 'taiyou no uta' is a real good song, I must say. Erika's voice may not be all that good, but since the composition of the song was fabulous, no one was really bothered by the fact that she did not hit the correct notes at times throughout the whole song. It's a song which would definitely make you addicted to it from the very first time you listen to it.

'Stay with me' is not as good as 'taiyou no uta' but it isn't half bad. Yet again, Erika's voice wasn't really that enchanting, but it's fair enough :)

Nothing much to comment on the acoustic and instrumental versions of those songs. Why don't you judge them for yourselves? :)

P/S: In case you didn't know, these songs were used in the drama she acted.

YUI 1st Compilation Album

As mentioned just right above, this is YUI's 1st compilation album, comprising of all B-side tracks from her past singles, as well as one new track, 'I'll be'. With that said, I guess there's nothing much more to comment as I've done so in my previous entries.

Regarding 'I'll be', I think it's not really that fantastic of a song till you'll actually splash money to get this whole album if you already have a collection of her singles and studio albums. I'd give it a so-so rating.

Besides liking the CD cover, as a YUI fan, this album was a real letdown to me. I may be wrong. What about you? :)

What about this single? The title says it all. 'SUMMER SONG' sounds really special with it's summer-like genre. I just love the way YUI picked the guitar in the song, especially right before the chorus. This cheerful song really makes one think of summer season :)

'Oh My God' sounds a little ordinary compared to 'SUMMER SONG' but listening to it still does bring back nostalgic summer memories in Japan somehow. Perhaps the influence of the title of the single? I don't know :)

Acoustic version of 'Laugh away' sounds very much like the studio version so there's nothing much to comment about it.

A really special single from YUI released during summer, dedicating happy summer holidays to YUI fans out there!

YUI 3rd Album

This album is so cool, I can hardly name you a song which I don't like. But of course, a review won't be a review without some comments, no? :)

I feel that this whole album is so totally YUI's style, it's her genre. There's basically no slow songs which would put you to sleep, although there is one particular song which I don't find that amazing. That has got to be 'We will go'. I can't really describe why I don't like it, I suppose it's just a personal feeling *chuckles*.

I love the song 'No way' the most, but sadly, it spans only over a minute. If only she had made it longer, I would listen to it everyday till my eardrums burst! :(

Conclusion? What are you waiting for? This album is a definite must-have!!

YUI 11th Single

I usually don't like YUI's compositions for slow songs, but 'Namidairo' totally changed my mind. It's the best slow song I've heard from YUI ever. I just love the whole arrangement, this song in my opinion, is flawless. From the verses, to the chorus and bridge, everything sounds perfect :)

'I wanna be...' is at a slightly faster pace and it's not disappointing as well. I just love YUI's songs which has obvious guitar accompaniments, and this song is one of them.

As for the acoustic version of 'LOVE & TRUTH', I believe it sounds better than the studio version. I guess YUI's voice matched the accompaniments better here than the noisy background music in the previous single.

In a nutshell, 5 stars aren't enough to rate this terrific single! :D

YUI 10th Single

'LOVE & TRUTH' was used in the Japanese movie 'Closed Note' starring Sawajiri Erika, an actress I have mentioned earlier in the post 'Good-bye days'. To be honest, I don't really like this song. I just don't find it YUI's style. But I guess one will get used it after listening to it several times.

I think YUI performed 'Jam' better than the A-side track. It sounds more like her style with the electric and accoustic guitars playing in the background. But it's still not that fantastic as I don't really find anything outstanding about this song.

Accoustic version of 'My Generation' isn't bad but I feel that the background is way too quiet when she sings the verses. It goes all normal again during the pre-chorus and chorus though~

This single is definitely not up to YUI's usual standard but oh well, everyone has their ups and downs :)

YUI 9th Single

Double-A single by YUI! 'My Generation' is fantastic. It totally rocks out of this world with YUI's guitar skills. 'Understand' despite being a slow song, it isn't half bad, really. As I have mentioned earlier, I suppose YUI must have started picking up some good sense for composing slow songs.

The accoustic version of CHE.R.RY sounds really cute with accoustic guitar. YUI's solo voice is clearer in this version of this song as there are lesser backup vocalists. Definitely not disappointing at all.

In conclusion, two thumbs up with your hands flying in the air for this superb single!

The song 'ORION' is a ballad song which was used as an insert song for the drama Ryūsei no Kizuna currently airing in Japan in which Mika Nakashima have a small role in. The music video features Toda Erika. 'FOCUS' was used for Canon IXY DIGITAL 920IS commercial.

I personally prefer 'ORION', one of her best ballad song. The lyrics are great and touching as well. 'FOCUS' is more of a dancy and energetic song. I highly recommend 'ORION' for Ryūsei no Kizuna's fans.

YUI 2nd Album

A better studio album compared to the 1st album 'From Me to You' in my opinion. Once again, I'll just touch on a few specific ones.

'RUIDO' is a really short track spanning less than a minute but I think it sounds really cute in a way. If you were to ask me to name a track which I don't like most in this album, it would definitely be 'Umbrella'. No, it's not that chart-topping 'Umbrella' by Rihanna which most people oh-so-love, it's YUI's version of it which sounds peculiarly Spanish-like, it lost it's Japanese music touch to the song.

'Why' is the slowest track in this album but I believe YUI's touch for slow songs has improved a little. The verses are still a bit boring and monotonous, but the chorus made up for it.

Others are pretty cool as usual, with special attention to 'How crazy'. That has gotta be my favorite track in this album.

Another cool single from my all-time favorite YUI! 'CHE.R.RY' is a fast-paced song with great vocals. Despite having a simple melody, I found that the instruments blended well with the song. Definitely a song which would be in my everyday playlist.

'Driving today' is a medium-paced song. Don't really like this song though as I find the melody kinda monotonous. Yet again, like a lullaby.

The accoustic version of 'Rolling star' wasn't disappointing! Lovely song without the electric guitars playing in the background. What more with YUI's enchanting voice~ It's just as good as the studio version with a quieter background :)

I highly recommend especially 'CHE.R.RY' to you guys! :D

YUI 7th Single

Whether you're a fan of the anime 'Bleach' or not, I'm pretty sure you'd get addicted to 'Rolling star' somehow or other. It's more towards the genre of J-rock which is why I likey :D. This song was used as the 5th opening song of the anime in accordance to 'LIFE' which was used as the 5th ending.

'Winter Hot Music' is a fairly short track spanning only slightly over 3 minutes. A not-so-good B-side track from YUI. Really simple melody with slow tempo, it's totally contrasting if you were to compare it with 'Rolling star'. While 'Rolling star' makes people jump and dance to the tune, 'Winter Hot Music' puts people to sleep as it sounds like a lullaby (well to me, at least).

The accoustic version of 'I remember you' sounds very similar to the studio version. I can barely distinguish the difference.

All in all, superb A-side track. Disappointing B-side track.

YUI 6th Single

'I remember you' is another slow song brought to you by YUI. Although I don't really have a thing for slow songs, I believe this is slightly better than 'TOKYO'. Can't say that one will go crazy over this song though.

'Cloudy' has a faster tempo compared to 'I remember you' and it sounds nicer in my opinion. But it still can't be compared with the previous singles B-side tracks like 'crossroad', 'Last Train' and 'HELP' which were definitely much better than this.

Accoustic version of 'Good-bye days' is not disappointing, but it doesn't have as much impact as it does in comparison to the studio version.

Overall, a little bit of a letdown to YUI fans.

YUI 5th Single

Yet another favorite from YUI's discography! Heck, this was when I started listening to YUI. From the film adaptation 'Midnight Sun (タイヨウのうた)' where she played the leading role of Kaoru Amane.

I so totally heart 'Good-bye days'. In terms of the melody, I think it's just as good as Sawajiri Erika's version of 'Taiyou no Uta' for the drama with the exact same name, about a month after YUI's debut in filming. But as for the voice... Needless to say, YUI is way off better than Erika.

Both 'Skyline' and 'It's Happy Line' were used as insert songs in the movie. Cheerful and lively, I especially loved 'Skyline' which matched the scenes in the movie superbly.

Highly recommended! And do take a peek at her movie to see her talents in acting as well! :)

YUI 1st Album

Won't comment on the songs which have appeared in her first 5 singles. It's a cool album with great songs but I'll just touch on a few.

Tracks 1, 3 and 7 are my favorites in this album, particularly track 3, loving especially the guitar strums. A song with a fairly simple flowing melody suitable for leisure listening.

Track 4 is one which I kinda dislike in this album. In my opinion, the chorus doesn't really go well with the verses. The bridge sounds as if she's singing a whole new different song for a moment. Track 13 has a really unique melody to it worth listening.

I don't find 'TOKYO' that amazing as like I have said earlier, I just don't have a spot for slow tempo songs. To be frank, this song bores me a little as we don't really get to hear YUI's forte.

'HELP' brightens the atmosphere a little with a slightly faster tempo and a catchy tune. In my opinion, I prefer this B-side track compared to 'TOKYO'.

As for Track 3, I have to say, I love this accoustic version just as much as the original version. Previous singles having accoustic versions of the other songs are usually not as nice as the original version, but this is different. It's really unique, you should give it a try.

Nice single altogether, but the A-side track is a teeny weeny bit of a letdown.

YUI 3rd Single

This is one of my favorite YUI singles so far. I just love the opening for 'LIFE' which was used as the 5th ending theme for the famous anime 'Bleach'. The melody for 'LIFE' is really unique and it really captivated me from the very first time I heard it. This was in fact the song which made YUI recognized internationally.

As for the 2nd track 'crossroad', it's one of the best B-side tracks in all her singles up till now. The tempo is almost similar to 'LIFE', keeping the song upbeat and her voice was really perfect for songs like those.

Again, nothing much to comment on the accoustic version, the original version is much better in my opinion as I never really particularly took this song to my liking.

All in all, a fantastic single which is by far one of YUI's best!

I'd give Track 1 a so-so rating. Wouldn't say it's really nice yet it's not bad. I suppose it was partly due to YUI's pitch being a little too high (during the chorus). On the other hand, I very much prefer Track 2. I believe it stands out better compared to Track 1. But I think that the drums overdid a little in the song. I could hear drums more than anything in that song! Nothing much to comment on Track 3 as it's almost the same as her previous single, just that it's accompanied with guitar and nothing else.

I'd still give this album a thumbs up. Better choice of songs than her previous single :).

Track 1 sounds wonderful with YUI's talent in guitar. Love her strumming in this song. As for Tracks 2 and 3, I'm not really impressed with them as I find that the chords chosen to be played with the songs aren't that nice. It sounds a little weird. Lol. The tempo of Track 3 is kinda slow for my liking too. A little too flat, in my opinion.

Oh well, I'm sure YUI fans would still go for this single for collection purposes anyway. I did.

YUI Indie Single

My all-time favorite Japanese singer! YUI was one of the first Japanese singers I've listened to before I started gaining interest in Japanese music. I was captivated by her guitar strumming and singing from her movie 'Taiyou no Uta (タイヨウのうた) where she took the leading role.

This is her debut single. She sang these 2 songs out of the 3 songs she performed for her audition hosted by Sony Music Japan. During the audition, 'I Know' was incomplete at that time, so she hummed nonsensical English to the tune while accompanying with her guitar.

This single was actually limited to 2,000 copies only but the songs were later on included in her 6th single 'Good-bye Days' and debut album 'From Me to You' respectively.

My opinion? I've always liked YUI's compositions and her unique voice when singing. So I'd definitely recommend this single to you! Enjoy!

The final installment of the 1 Liter of Tears OST series! Track 1 is the best in this single, without a doubt. If compared to 3gatsu 9ka (3月9日), I'd have to say I'd prefer this song anytime as it has more beat.

Track 2 is not half bad as well as it's a fast-beat cheerful song. Track 3 is 3gatsu 9ka (3月9日) with strings orchestra and piano. Song's nice but I found the tone a little dull without drums. The song would be really suitable for peaceful moments though.

In my opinion, this whole single is great!

Yet another album from 1 Liter of Tears, but this time with Remioromen (レミオロメン) as the artiste! This song was used as the choir song for Ikeuchi Aya's class in the drama.

It's more of J-rock genre although it's not really that noisy. Some people even commented that they sound more like reciting a poem than singing. Sorta like Jay Chou style when he used to be mumbling instead of singing?

Another album from the drama '1 Liter of Tears'. I fell in love with this song ever since I first heard it from the drama. However, in contrast to such a lovely sentimental song, the accompanying tracks are not really my type of music.

In a nutshell, I'd recommend only Track 1 to 1 Liter of Tears drama fans!
