The design and the layout of your resume is important. Most of the time resume readers have a huge stack to go through. They quickly skim through them and only really read the ones that stand out. Don’t just do a cookie cutter resume, using no bold, no spacing and just a bunch of text. This makes them harder to read. So how can you make the design and the layout of your resume stand out, yet still be acceptable? Read on for some helpful advice..

The font. Don’t use a tiny font that makes it hard to read. Don’t use a fancy font either. Keep your resume professional and easy to read at the same time.

The length. Someone once said that a resume should be like a bikini, long enough to cover the topic yet still short enough to keep it interesting.

Make it easy. Your resume can be as long as you want it to be, but at least separate it in sections, with bullet points and paragraphs. Just look at how easy this blog and this post is to read, follow the same principle.

Italic. Bold. Underline. Rarely is it a good idea to use these within the text of your resume. If you feel you must, don’t overuse them, as it will make your resume distracting.

Heading. Put your contact information at the top of your resume. Include your email address as well, but make sure it’s not cutiepie49253@hotmail.com. Keep it professional.

If your dream is to find a job where you can work from home don’t think it’s that great either. If you’re seriously considering embarking on a stay at home job then read these points on why it could be problematic.

It’s hard work. It all depends on you. When you work at home as a freelancer or just self employed running your own business, there is an immense pressure on you. At a regular job it’s not your responsibility to care for the health of the company at all times. Sometimes you can take some time off for a vacation or just slack off at work for hours at a time.

No tech support. Have a computer problem? You’re on your own. Don’t bother asking co-workers or taking the issue up with the IT department. You’ll have to take your computer to a repair shop if you run into a big problem.

Staying physically fit. When you work from home you have the tendency to not dress up, not go out and sit all day. This leads you to become pale and overweight. The lack of social contact is also a concern.

Trouble staying focused. There are constant interruptions at home such as personal phone calls, the television, people knocking on the door and taking care of children or pets.

Just as it has for the past decade, the internet has continued to grow, expand, and evolve at an amazing pace, and this trend only looks to continue in the near future. This means new tech jobs being created in some cases, and more responsibility being placed on those already employed in others. Here are three emerging technologies that are driving job trends.

The Mobile Revolution

With cellphone service providers and phone manufacturers coming out with amazing new devices, and with tablet devices quickly becoming a staple within the mobile digital domain, more and more tech companies are seeking IT professionals, design and development experts, and marketing gurus to help them bridge the gap between internet at home and internet on the go.

Mobile site development is a trend that has received a significant amount of attention lately, as more and more people are using their mobile devices to access the web. Design and development experts are having to find ways to convert web sites into mobile-friendly versions for easier browsing, and marketing professional are finding new ways to promote these mobile sites, as well as track and read analytics.

As well, IT managers are faced with the task of interfacing with telecommunications companies in order to keep users connected, and because the development of apps has become a huge industry, as the open Android platform has given many companies a chance to promote themselves and their products and services through mobile marketing.

Cloud Computing

While some in the technology industry regard cloud computing as a bit over hyped, the fact is, the technology seems to be here to stay, or at least remain as a stepping stone to more networked technologies. As a result, IT professionals, including those involved in security, systems, web, and information engineering, are having to learn a new way of data transfer while balancing their traditional duties.

By using cloud technology, IT employees are also having to manage new hardware, such as servers providing cloud hosting, meaning IT professionals continue to be in great demand. As more companies turn to cloud hosting, many are creating new positions to deal with the management and security of the data being stored within the cloud, and most are also hiring training staff to handle the onslaught of new information.

Social Media

Although social media is still relatively young, more and more tech companies are focusing on the implications it may have for the future. As such, internet marketing firms are continuing to expand as they take on the task of using social media to research and attract customers. Because social media offers so much in the way of gathering data, internet marketers are increasingly able to target demographics in a more focused fashion. In addition, design and development professionals are now focusing more on integrating social media technologies into traditional web pages, allowing for more marketing opportunities.

It’s never too late to start thinking of your continuing education. Perhaps you were not serious about your career when you were younger and skipped college. Perhaps you had to raise a family young and school was not an option. Perhaps you had financial responsibilities at a young age and had to drop out of school. Regardless of the reason you can still go back to school. But is it worth it? That’s a personal decision you’re going to have to make on your own, but here are some reasons why adults should consider going back to school.

Realize a dream. Did you make a promise to your parents that you would complete your education? Did your college life end on bad terms? It could be extremely rewarding if you went back and completed your degree.

If you’re going back to school for a work related reason like upgrading your skills, your tuition and school books could be a tax deduction.

Self esteem. If your friends or colleagues are college graduates perhaps you feel inadequate around them. This degree could give a big boost to your self esteem.

Networking. Going back to school is a great chance at networking. You’re going to meet fellow students who could be interns and could introduce you to the right people.

Invest in your future. How certain are you about your job security? If you’re ever laid off you now have a more impressive resume.

According to a recent study, there appears to be an east-west divide in the capital in relation to how many people are applying for each available position in London, this seems to be comparable to the north-south split on employment across the UK. Depending on the area you live in London, you could be competing with twenty four other people when applying for a job.

On average, there are nine people applying to each job in London, where as for the rest of Britain, this figure drops by one third, to six. The eastern half of London has it the toughest, especially Waltham Forest. This is the most competitive borough with twenty five people applying for one position, closely followed by Hackney, where there are twenty two people competing.

The western areas of London are the least competitive in which Kingston came out on top. If you are lucky enough to live in this borough, on average there are just three people chasing one job and this figure only slightly increases to four when moving across to Hillingdon and Richmond. These are all less than the average across Britain.

Whilst the likes of bankers are sitting happily picking up bonuses, many others are struggling. Although ministers have claimed that there are plenty of jobs out there (454,765 still available across the UK), the fact that high numbers of people are applying for each vacancy means that many areas in London are beginning to struggle. As a result this is causing terrible black spots which are leading to huge economic and social damage to areas.

Figures show that there are 100,000 more people in work now in London than in May 2010, and this figure can keep on rising as there are still 107,473 jobs available in and around London, and more specifically 12,011 jobs in West London and 3,403 jobs East London, ranging from a variety of positions.

Going to a job interview is a stressful situation. Here’s some tips to make your job interviews less stressful.

Research the company. They’re researching you, so why shouldn’t you do the same? Go to their website and see if they have a mission statement. See what their goals are. During the interview cite what you can do to help them reach their business goals.

Wear comfortable clothing. Sure you have to look good, but if you’re not used to wearing a suit you’ll be fidgeting the whole time. Your attire should make you look professional and feel confident at the same time.

Practice makes perfect. The more job interviews you go through the better you’ll become at them. Practice everything from your handshake to your posture to your body language.

Be prepared. Not all job interviews are the same, but be prepared to answer the basic questions that seemingly every job interview consists of.
