I don’t listen to hip-hop / funk / soul / R&B / rap that much (or really, at all), but every once a while a few tracks (or really, just two: Hey Ya! and Gold Digger) will pop out and catch my attention. And this one did just that.

The track, with its Kinetic Typography (more about it here) video, has been getting alot of attention on the Internet for the past 2 weeks. It will never get any airplay on the local radio stations, but with the Internet and your iPods and media players these days, I’m sure it will never stop anyone from enjoying this song.

Smashing Pumpkins – Freak

The Smashing Pumpkins have just released the fifth and newest track to the on-going behemoth 44-tracks Teargarden By Kaleidyscope. Titled Freak, it will become the opening track to the 2nd volume, The Solstice Bare. 4 tracks for each volume for a total of 11 volumes, geddit?

As for the song itself, it’s quite a heavy poppy one. But of course, I’m no good in describing songs. You’ll have to listen it for yourself. Also, get the rest of the songs in Teargarden (so far) by going here.

Can’t help but putting a smile while listening to this song. So Long, and Thanks For All The Fish is of course, one of the (book) titles from The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy series.

I believe this version of the song came on during the end credits of the movie (2005). There’s another Broadway-style version of the song out there, but I like this one better. It’s more, classy.

Like the dolphins say, The world’s about to be destroyed. There’s no point getting all annoyed. Lie back and let the planet dissolve…

Brandon Flowers – Crossfire

Brandon Flowers, the lead of The Killers, have just released his debut solo single, Crossfire. The album, Flamingo, will be out sometime in September 2010.

For obvious reason, I will not post the song here. It’s available right now in iTunes, or while the tracks are still there, go take a peek at Hype Machine.

My take on it? If you like The Killers, you’ll probably like this. It’s slowly warming up for me.

I have been on House (M.D.) marathon for the past few days, catching up on all the episodes that I have missed ever since the series went on break last year.

This track came on during Kutner‘s (Kumar, of Harold & Kumar) funeral in one of the episodes in Season 5. Shame that the character died. But the subsequent events lead to a really mind-blowing Season 5 finale.

Beck’s Record Club – Never Tear Us Apart

Classic INXS‘ 80s ballad as covered by Beck and company (members from Liars, Os Mutantes and St. Vincent). St. Vincent (real name Annie Clark) is on vocals.

Record Club is an informal meeting of various musicians to record an album in a day. The album chosen to be reinterpreted is used as a framework. Nothing is rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track is put up here once a week. The songs are rough renditions, often first takes that document what happened over the course of a day as opposed to a polished rendering. There is no intention to ‘add to’ the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens.

Sleigh Bell is a 2-piece band/group that was earmarked by Pitchfork and Stereogum as the band to watch when they released their demos last year. They have just released their debut album, Treats, earlier this month to really good reviews. Album-of-the-year kind of good reviews.

This track, Ring Ring (or Rill Rill in Treats), has been on repeats for the whole weekend. Enjoy.

Decided to watch Adventureland the other night, after months of over-looking it. If you don’t already know, I’m a sucker to movies with really good soundtrack. And this movie has got a really, really good one. It’s quite a good show, by the way.

This track here is one of the more familiar songs to come out from the 1980s. I’m sure you’ve heard it before. But like I’ve always believed, a good song never runs out of style.
